There's a new genre rising from the underground. Its name: BIZARRO. For years, readers have been asking for a category of fiction dedicated to the weird, crazy, cult side of storytelling that has become a staple in the film industry (with directors such as David Lynch, Takashi Miike, Tim Burton, and Lloyd Kaufman) but has been largely ignored in the literary world, until now. The Bizarro Starter Kit features short novels and story collections by ten of the leading authors in the bizarro genre: Brian Allen Carr, Violet LeVoit, David W. Barbee, Shane McKenzie, J. David Osborne, Kirsten Alene, Robert Devereaux, Douglas Hackle, Eric Hendrixson, and Nick Antosca.

This Red collection gives a wide range of what Bizarro is capable of. Some of it is weird, some of it is psycho, and some of it is sexy. Bizarro is unafraid to be creative. I'm sure anyone reading this book with find an author they will like. Personally, I'm in love with Douglas Hackle (Terror Sardines In Terror Sauce was hilarious!) and Shane Mckenzie (loved the Kaiju Kid). There are some classics in here that I'm proud to have on my new and growing Bizarro shelf. :)

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A General Synopsis of a Rare Star Wars-Related Book By Cameron B. Clark I'm giving this book three stars as a neutral rating to only provide information about it, not a critique. This now-rare paperback was published by Quest Publications in 1983, the same year that Return of the Jedi came out, and was co-authored by Norman L. Geisler and J. Yutaka Amano. Both later co-authored The Reincarnation Sensation [1987] and The Infiltration of the New Age [1989]. The book is 4.25 x 7 inches in size with a black "outer space with stars" front cover and the title in silver caps; an attractive little book, 61 pages long. The Table of Contents is as follows: 1) Is There a Religion of the Force?, 2) What is the Religion of the Force?, 3) What is George Lucas's Religion?, 4) Is Star Wars a Christian Allegory?, 5) What is the Source of the Force?, 6) What is the Gospel According to Lucas?, 7) What Makes the Difference?, 8) What Difference Does it Make?, and Notes. The Notes section at the back provides the bibliography, showing a reliance on the Ballantine Books novelizations of the films by George Lucas (Star Wars [1976]), Donald Glut (The Empire Strikes Back [1980]), and James Kahn (Return of the Jedi [1983]). Interviews in Time, Dallas Times Herald, Newsweek, Dallas Morning News, and Rolling Stone are used for quotes and information along with the following books: Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas [1983] by Dale Pollock, The Gospel from Outer Space [1983] by Robert Short, The Teachings of Don Juan [1968] and Tales of Power [1974] by Carlos Castaneda, The Don Juan Papers [1980] edited by Richard de Mille, History and Christianity [1983] by John W. Montgomery, and Death of a Guru [1977] by Rabindranath R. Majaraj, with Dave Hunt.Chapter 1 establishes that there is a religion of the Force, albeit fictional, the term "religion" being used three times in the first Star Wars film (Episode IV: A New Hope). It is then shown with examples that "the Jedi beliefs have all the characteristics of a religion" (pg. 8). Chapter 2 looks at the nature of the force, the importance of faith in it [with deep commitment and concentration] for tapping into its extraordinary power, the temptations of the dark side, and the role of immortality. Chapter 3 looks at Lucas's religious beliefs based on quotes from him. It basically shows that Lucas believes in some sort of supreme being he has called "God" and that he believes in the importance of moral values. He is quoted as saying he was trying to express in Star Wars "that there is a God and there is both a good side and a bad side. You have a choice between them, but the world works better if you're on the good side" (pg. 20, quoted from Time magazine [May 23, 1983, pg. 68]). Chapter 4 responds to Robert Short's book The Gospel from Outer Space which sees a Christian allegory in Star Wars. The authors show some obvious similarities "between the religion of the Jedi and the religion of Jesus," listing seven, but then give a longer list of ten crucial differences, ending the chapter with the following: "The Force is an 'eastern' pantheistic view, and God is a 'western' theistic concept. And, as Kipling put it, 'East is east and west is west, and never the twain shall meet.'"Chapter 5 points to Carlos Castaneda's Tales of Power as the source that heavily influenced Lucas's concept of the Force, referring to a quote from Dale Pollock's book which makes this point. The similarities between Star Wars and Castaneda's book are given before Castaneda's similarities with Eastern religious traditions are stated along with his similarities with the Occult (both sections using Richard de Mille's book). Chapter 6 seems to tie into the topic of Chapter 3, showing the moral and religious messages in Star Wars. Chapter 7 basically contrasts Christianity with the religion of the Force, reemphasizing some of the crucial differences pointed out in Chapter 4, each section title showing a contrast: Force vs. Father, Feeling vs. Thinking, Self Effort vs. Divine Help, and All Winners vs. Some Losers. Chapter 8, the last one, quotes from Maharaji's book to answer the question "What difference does it make?"This small book will find favor with some Christians who find little to no compatibility between the spiritual ideas in Star Wars and those in Christianity. However, for those Christians who may acknowledge many of the points made in this book but who still believe that the films can be used to teach spiritual and moral themes that are compatible with Christianity, it is recommended that one look to some of the newer books by Christians who share this perspective (and take into consideration all six films) such as Star Wars Jesus by Caleb Grimes and The Gospel According to Star Wars by John C. McDowell.

This is a contemporary novel set in a small town, a funny, heart-warming story. The small town comes alive in this amusing tale of small scale conflict. Charlie Callahan is a retired baseball player living in Hunters Crossing, Ohio with his wife, Lorena and two boys, Rob, a college student, and Drew, a senior in high school. Charlie, a coach for the local high school football team, is quite happy with his life until things start to change; an old girlfriend comes to town, the adult daughter he’d never met wants to get to know him, and a silly argument with the Mayor’s wife after a football game turns into a more serious power play. When what he thought to be only a minor incident threatens to turn his life upside down, Charlie is forced to change his passive attitude. When the small town is taken by storm, sides are taken. Some people who knew him for years desert him, while new friends come to support him. In the end, as Shakespeare said, ’All’s well that ends well’.

Great read By Rebba I like to read women's fiction and this is the story of a small town, with original, interesting characters and a dynamic flow of events. Surprisingly it follows the story of a man, not a woman. Charlie Callahan and through him the small town and a lot of colorful characters create the entire picture

It's Christmas again, and Melanie Travis barely has time to pencil in some holiday festivities. Especially once she finds herself making a list of murder suspects - and checking it twice... This year, all Melanie wants for Christmas is a dull moment. Between her son Davey, her teaching job, and showing her Standard Poodle puppy, Eve, there just aren't enough hours in the day. But when Davey's usual bus driver, Henry Pruitt, disappears and is replaced by a surly, pierced, twentysomething, Melanie is concerned. The elderly, amiable Henry was a friend to all in the neighborhood, so she decides to check on him.... only to find that he died two days earlier, under suspicious circumstances. As if that weren't bad enough, Henry's two Golden Retrievers are now bereft of both master and home. Melanie can't just abandon them, so she brings them to her Aunt Peg, the most stubborn woman on the planet, who's now determined to find out the truth about Henry's death, no matter what it takes. Soon, the indomitable Aunt Peg has Melanie leashed to another murder investigation. And unless she sniffs out this Scrooge of a killer fast, a lump of coal in her stocking may not be the worst thing Melanie gets this Christmas...

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Strong writing, great character By booksforabuck Melanie Travis has enough to do over the holiday season without worrying about murder. She has a son to shop for, an expecting sister-in-law, a poodle to prepare for all-important showings, a girlfriend to straighten out on buying a respectable dog, and a relationship to get right. When the favorite schoolbus driver is found dead, all Melanie intends to do is make sure his dogs get a proper home. But getting the dogs the right home gets complicated when the driver's daughters roll into town--intent on putting the dogs up for auction (because one of their parents' was a champion, the daughters assumes that the dogs must be highly valuable). The only way Melanie's Aunt Peg figures to get rid of the daughters is to solve the mystery herself. Of course, Aunt Peg's way of solving mysteries turns out to involve a lot of sending Melanie out to do the work.Author Laurien Berenson does an excellent job combining an interesting character with humor and mystery. Melanie, with her relationship issues, and her obsession with her standard poodles draws the reader in largely because she is a typical suburban mom--caught between a job, her child, and a hobby that demands so much of her time. In Berenson books, the mystery plays second fiddle--it isn't that it isn't being worked on, it's just that the mystery has to come after Melanie takes care of her son and her poodles. In JINGLE BELL BARK, Berenson makes the combination click. I've enjoyed a number of other novels in this series, but BARK seems to put togther the combination of character, humor, and strong writing even better than the earlier novels. Berenson's writing hooks the reader early and keeps us involved with the story.I have no hesitation in recommending JINGLE BELL BARK to anyone looking for a light mystery.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. delightful amateur sleuth By A Customer In Greenwich, Connecticut, Melanie Travis is a special needs tutor at the posh private Howard Academy. She enjoys her work there, but her passion is showing and breeding French Poodles. Her son Davy enthusiastically helps her with the canines when he can. When she takes her son to the school bus, Melanie is surprised that Henry the long time driver has been replaced by Annie. She visits Henry to see if he is okay only to learn that he recently died from a heart attack.Melanie sees Golden Retrievers inside of Henry's home so feeling compassion and not wanting the dogs to mourn alone, she takes them to her Aunt Peg, a professional breeder and canine lover. The two female relatives learn through the grapevine that Henry was poisoned. His two daughters arrive planning to sell their father's animal companions on E-bay. They also refuse to leave town until their father's killer is caught. Peg wants these coldhearted adult children be gone so she investigates the homicide to expedite their departure, not realizing the danger her decision poses to her and her niece.JINGLE BELL BARK is a delightful tale that amateur sleuth fans will enjoy especially the canine caper crowd. Laurien Berenson enables readers to glimpse inside the world of dogs through the loving way aunt and niece nurture their beloved barking family members. The audience, like Peg, will find it impossible to determine who the killer is because suspects abound with motives and opportunities. This leads to a surprising climax as Peg and Melanie try to take a bite out of crime before they are nipped permanently.Harriet Klausner

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Best Yet! By Poodleland I have read all of the Melanie Travis mysteries, and this is definitely the best one yet! It's written with Ms Berenson's usual humor and knowledge of her subject matter. Those who love showing dogs, especially Poodles, and a good light-hearted mystery will enjoy this book immensely. Can't wait for the next addition to the series.

It was a delightful read following Luke, a single dad with a delightful little daughter named Lisa, and Kim, his girlfriend from high school, in their journey to seeing if they could put their pasts behind them and find a future together. It is a heartwarming story showing how God can change lives and that He a God of second chances. This is another one from this author that I certainly recommend.

Honestly, this is the first romance centered novels I read, and let me tell you, it will not be the last! At times while reading this book, I has to put it down and start fangirling for a good few minutes.Writing:I absolutely love Cecilia Dowdy's writing style. It flows onto the page and is so complex, and easily understandable.Characters:I truly loved the main characters; Kim and Luke. The one thing I noticed, is that Luke spoke his mind. You didn't have to wait half the book for him to speak his mind to Kim, and I really liked that. Another thing, sometimes Luke spoke his mind a wee bit to much. I'm really surprised some of the things he said didn't infuriate Kim; it would have me. Thankfully, this was rare and didn't bother me at all.Overall:Wow! This was an incredible book! I'm really glad this is what I started out with in the romance genre. I completely devoured this book. I really wish there was a physical copy of this book; I would totally buy it.Recommendations:I would recommend this to girls that are mature, and 12+. It has minor content, only memories though. It is purely Christian, so nothing to worry about. If you're looking for a warm, cozy, love able, adorable story, look no further.*I received a free, digital copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion at all.

Kim has moved back to her hometown, and so has her high school boyfriend, Luke. This is a great story about second chances. I felt like I got to know the characters and see into their relationships and their motivations. I don't always feel that way when reading a novella. I liked the way faith was brought into their relationship and decisions. The setting -- how could I not like a bakery setting and a heroine that bakes incredible cookies?! And the recipe for her famous vanilla cookies is given at the end of the story. Gotta love that! There are just a few places where the wrong name was used (editing misses), but I knew who they were talking about and it didn't bother me.This is the first story I've read by this author. It definitely won't be the last, because since reading this story, I've already bought another of her books! So, clearly, I would recommend this novella!I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Upside-Down Joy: An Inverted Look at Sin, Sickness, Struggle, and Death, by Andrew Mann

About the Author Andrew Mann had a small-town Missouri upbringing and then . . . God moved him. He now calls the Mott Haven neighborhood in the South Bronx home. His journey from farm to city introduced him to a greater spiritual journey―from 'religious life' to 'real life'. He recognizes how God used so many experiences and individuals to open his eyes to truths about himself as well as his Creator. Personal experiences with sin, cancer, relationships, and death have turned his world upside down and in the process taught him how to live with inverted thinking. He is currently a pastor and ministry leader with the Graffiti 2 Baptist Church and Community Ministries that serves more than 10,000 people a year and empowers children, youth, and adults.

He shares what he has learned as he labors in the South Bronx as a church and community worker. From his experiences with teenagers there to his own journey of faith through cancer, he shows deep insight into how we live. He also conveys how joy comes in upside down ways. It is a book about God, but also about being a human being. It has been said that all stories are about your father. For me, this one certainly is. I highly recommend it. Taylor Field

Jonas Jonasson's picaresque tale of how one person's actions can have far-reaching—even global—consequences, written with the same light-hearted satirical voice as his bestselling debut novel, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.

On June 14th, 2007, the King and Prime Minister of Sweden went missing from a gala banquet at the Royal Castle. Later it was said that both had fallen ill: the truth is different. The real story starts much earlier, in 1961, with the birth of Nombeko Mayeki in a shack in Soweto. Nombeko was fated to grow up fast and die early in her poverty-stricken township. But Nombeko takes a different path. She finds work as a housecleaner and eventually makes her way up to the position of chief advisor, at the helm of one of the world's most secret projects.

Here is where the story merges with, then diverges from reality. South Africa developed six nuclear missiles in the 1980s, then voluntarily dismantled them in 1994. This is a story about the seventh missile . . . the one that was never supposed to have existed. Nombeko Mayeki knows too much about it, and now she's on the run from both the South African justice and the most terrifying secret service in the world. She ends up in Sweden, which has transformed into a nuclear nation, and the fate of the world now lies in Nombeko's hands.

The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden, by Jonas Jonasson, Rachel Willson-Broyles

Review “A funny and completely implausible farce about a woman, a bomb and a man’s frustrated ambition to overthrow the king of Sweden… The rest of the world will chuckle all the way through it.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“In The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden, Jonas Jonasson unfurls a wide, whimsical net that readers will relish being caught up in.” (BookPage)“A funny and improbable tale with characters from South Africa to Sweden demonstrates how even the most seemingly insignificant people can change the fate of the world.” (Denver Post)

From the Back Cover

A wildly picaresque new novel from Jonas Jonasson, the author of the internationally bestselling The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

In a tiny shack in the largest township in South Africa, Nombeko Mayeki is born. Put to work at five years old and orphaned at ten, she quickly learns that the world expects nothing more from her than to die young, be it from drugs, alcohol, or just plain despair. But Nombeko has grander plans. She learns to read and write, and at just fifteen, using her cunning and fearlessness, she makes it out of Soweto with millions of smuggled diamonds in her possession. Then things take a turn for the worse....

Nombeko ends up the prisoner of an incompetent engineer in a research facility working on South Africa's secret nuclear arsenal. Yet the unstoppable Nombeko pulls off a daring escape to Sweden, where she meets twins named Holger One and Holger Two, who are carrying out a mission to bring down the Swedish monarchy...by any means necessary.

Nombeko's life ends up hopelessly intertwined with the lives of the twins, and when the twins arrange to kidnap the Swedish king and prime minister, it is up to our unlikely heroine to save the day—and possibly the world. In this wild romp, Jonasson tackles issues ranging from the pervasiveness of racism to the dangers of absolute power while telling a charming and hilarious story along the way. In the satirical voice that has earned him legions of fans the world over, Jonasson gives us another rollicking tale of how even the smallest of decisions can have sweeping—even global—consequences.

43 of 44 people found the following review helpful. A Tall Tale By Roger Brunyate In place of an epigraph, the novel has a little teaser:"The statistical probability that an illiterate in 1970s Soweto will grow up and one day find herself confined in a potato truck with the Swedish King and prime minister is 1 in 45,766,212,810. [This, according to the calculations of the aforementioned illiterate herself.]"The said illiterate and protagonist of the book is a black girl named Nombeko, 14 when we first meet her. For the past nine years, she has been an employee of the City of Johannesburg Sanitation Department as a latrine emptier, but things are about to change for her. For one thing, she has a genius for calculations, and once given a chance to get rid of that illiteracy, she will reveal a genius for most other things as well. Indeed, she is a thousand times smarter the head of the South African nuclear weapons program, an alcoholic appointed through nepotism for whom she finds herself working as an indentured employee. Until the weapons program is ended, and she finds herself in virtual possession of a working atomic bomb that never got entered in the official registry….Alternate chapters take us to Sweden, where a fanatical republican brings up his twin sons, both called Holger (don't ask!), to carry on his mission to destroy the monarchy. He dies, and Holger One follows in his father's footsteps while Holger Two, saner and smarter, has other ideas. Roughly a third of the way into the book, the two stories will connect, and after the passage of several decades and many, many, many twists and turns, they will culminate in the back of that potato truck with the King of Sweden. This is not really my thing at all; I prefer a bit more reality in my novels. But I enjoyed it for several reasons. First, Nombeko is such an attractive heroine, and there is always pleasure in seeing the underdog use her wits to get the better of those who have all the advantages. Second, Jonasson (as translated by Rachel Willson-Broyles) has a most engaging style, seldom laugh-aloud funny, but always amusing. Thirdly, his plotting is so darned good. Unlike many tall tales, it is not simply a matter of tacking on one episode after another like a weekly serial. There is clearly an intricate geometer at work here, introducing vectors on page 80 or 100 that will not click into place until page 300 or 320.And finally, the novel is not so disconnected from reality after all. Although the doings of the main characters are improbable, they are shown against an international background that is essentially factual. The oppression in 1970s South Africa is real, as is the end of Apartheid. Events in Sweden are probably less well known to outsiders, but as far as I can see, these are real too, and the book gets in some sly questions about its political self-image. And on the world stage, its viewpoint extends to Israel, Russia, America, and the increasing role of China in Africa. The action of this political satire may be whimsical, but its world-view is as clear eyed as they come.

35 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Jonasson combines the anarchistic tendencies of Thomas Pynchon with the broad, complicated but loving world of John Irving. By Bookreporter The story of THE GIRL WHO SAVED THE KING OF SWEDEN begins in June 2007. The King and Prime Minister of Sweden have disappeared without a trace from a fancy banquet at the Royal Castle. Because Jonas Jonasson is known around the world for satire and complex stories filled with wit and a large cast of characters, their being missing causes all sorts of other waves in the universe that affect a whole bunch of other people. Like a little girl in Soweto a long time ago.In 1961, the girl who saved the King of Sweden is born into poverty in Soweto. Her name is Nombeko, and she ends up with a childhood filled with hard labor; she is a sewage worker and suffers the requisite horrors that come from growing up in Johannesburg slums in those days. When she finally escapes, running away at the age of 15, she goes directly to the National Library in Pretoria. She ends up never getting there, instead being put to work for an engineer who is working on the nukes program for South Africa. She realizes that seven bombs have been made, one more than the six that were originally ordered.Nombeko’s journey as a fugitive with secret knowledge sends her to Sweden, where she meets unlikely twins who offer her an opportunity to do something to help get the King of Sweden off his throne. The story continues with Mossad agents, Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela and other dignitaries who step up the action, ensuring that Nombeko and her friends will take you on a trip you won’t forget.Jonasson is crazy. The things that he puts together should not work, but they do because his sense of both the absurd and the possible are so finely honed. Of the many conceits in the book that are far-fetched and test readers’ ability to suspend their disbelief, the idea of a set of identical twins in which one of them was never registered and so doesn’t officially exist in this world in which everyone has a target on them is the most insane. But somehow it works. Jonasson combines the anarchistic tendencies of Thomas Pynchon with the broad, complicated but loving world of John Irving. It’s a real accomplishment to take a readers on a trip like this and give them what I can only describe as a fantastic journey outside of the realm of our real worlds.Nombeko is one of my favorite characters in recent literature. She is strong, kind and, like South Africa itself, resilient and hopeful in the face of pure nastiness. Jonasson rests this entire volume on her shoulders, and they are able to withstand the narrative weight without any problem. She is a heroine not necessarily for a modern age but for all ages. In my mind, she grows up to look like the ultimate Earth Mother.THE GIRL WHO SAVED THE KING OF SWEDEN is unexpected, crazy and exuberant. Take it on vacation and you won’t be able to put it down. If you are on staycation this summer, you will feel like you’ve been to the Moon and back by the time you are done. It is trippy and gripping and all the things that good original art should be.Reviewed by Jana Siciliano.

The best of picaresque novels By "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn What a festival of adventure, rogue behavior, a non-existent twin who exists, and a fugitive atomic bomb that also doesn't exist--but weighs several megatons and is very difficult to hide. The plucky and delightful protagonist is Nombeko, who at the start of the novel is fourteen and cleaning latrines in Soweto, her hometown. It is the seventies, and apartheid is the social/political/economic cloud Nombeko lives under, and yet she makes the best of her situation, and eventually saves the world. The novel takes us from 1970's South Africa to 21st century Sweden. In a picaresque novel, it is paramount to have a captivating group of characters, and nimble writing that compels the reader forward. Jonasson's talent is magnificent, and his largesse and wily wit, as well as his ability to create a thrilling plot, kept me in suspense until the very end. Nombeko is both humble and noble, a mathematical genius who lives by her wits and her virtuous cunning. Then there are the twins in Sweden, Holger One and Holger Two. But only one of them exists on paper. The Holgers' father is a fanatical republican who is determined to depose the monarchy. When his wife gives birth to twins, he decides that he can keep one hidden at home, while one goes off to school. Unfortunately, the one in school is none too bright, but is a fanatic like his father, while the non-existent Holger Two is both intelligent and principled. Inevitably, the Holgers and Nombeko cross paths."All these people found themselves in nuclear-weapons-free Sweden. Right next door to a three-megaton bomb."As it says in the intro, "The statistical probability that an illiterate in 1970's Soweto will grow up and one day find herself confined in a potato truck with the Swedish king and prime minister is 1 in 45,766,212,810. This, according to the calculations of the aforementioned illiterate herself."One of my favorite sections of the novel is when Nombeko is forced into indentured servitude. She is run over by moronic engineer, Westhuizen, in Johannesburg after a long journey on foot from her shantytown (her goal is to make it to the National Library of Pretoria). The judge decided in favor of the alcoholic engineer, who made it through engineering school through nepotism and cheating. He is now in charge of a secret nuclear weapons program in South Africa. Because of his stupidity and constant inebriation, and because of Nombeko's mathematical brilliance, she becomes his "right hand man." Officially, she is the cleaning woman. This episode in Nombeko's life puts her in contact with Mossad Agent A, Mossad Agent B, and three Chinese woman skilled at making ancient, fraudulent pottery and in the poisoning of dogs--also in forced servitude to Engineer Westhuizen."Nombeko imagined that the engineer might soon be able to devote himself to his brandy full-time; he could sit and dream his way back to the years when it was possible to convince those around him that he had a clue."As zany as this novel may sound in description, Jonasson's finesse in making this believably unbelievable story engrossing is because of the characters, particularly Nombeko and the Holgers. His moral compass is a ticking time bomb, and he connects with the reader rather than condescending, so that I was in on his humor, and charmed by his narrative. The translation from Swedish by Rachel Willson-Broyles is luminous and lyrical. I can't believe that the original text wasn't in English.Holger Two's problem of non-existence, as well as the lack of birth certificate/paperless Nombeko, provide for a deep and provocative philosophical theme in this novel about identity and permanence, as well as some fascinating real-world questions.I can't recommend this unforgettable, supple, radiant novel enough!

Well here I am again with my step brother Bobby's story. Imagine if you will, that you had the misfortune to be born from incest by a father and daughter. Also imagine if you will, being born allergic to daylight, that's daylight, not sunlight, there's a huge difference between the two, further imagine as a parent being told that your child would not see five years old alive. You have imagined all that, now imagine being told that you could not take your child outside unless it was pitch black, how would you cope? Then be told that your child has cerebral palsy which was possibly caused by a brain.injury by his mother. In this book, come with me on Bobby's journey, I will take you through from Bobby being the child of his grandfather ,to Bobby being hospitalised with blisters, to the fight to get him an education and more. Sit back, relax and come on our journey as to how my family, bobby, the education board and doctors coped with this very rare condition that only six people in the world have PLEASE NOTE. As with my last book I have written this book under the name of kate mofatt and it is written from my own personal memories.

Desperately needs editing, but a heartbreaking story By Amazon Customer For purposes of my review to readers, I'm willing to let the editing go due to the bravery of this persons willingness to share her life, despite her lack of education from being raised in the gypsy lifestyle, so my review of the story is from that perspective. My star rating is overall. This book is a terribly heartbreaking account of a little boy with a very rare condition which does not allow him to be touched by any sun's rays whatsoever, even slight ones coming into the home thru the window curtains. His mother fights desperately for his rights to attend the local nursery school, and to have special shoes made to help him walk. He suffers other disabilities as well, such as not learning things like potty training and speaking as early or as easily as other children, and deformities of the hands and feet. This may or may not be the result of the fact that his father is also his grandfather (his adoptive mother is his grandmother, and his adoptive father is his bio father/grandfather).I'm looking forward to book two, but unfortunately cannot "follow" this author like I can others, s there is no option to do so. I hope by the time book two comes out it will be available in Kindle Unlimited also, As that's the first place I check, and I want to know what happens to little Bobby.I couldn't, in good faith, give more than three stars, because of the desperate need for an editor. The author uses the word "to" even when she should use "too" and never indicates a conversation is taking place by using quotes. Commas are not used correctly, making it difficult to read, so it's kind of a "puzzle" to read. But if you can get past that the story is very good.NOTE TO AUTHOR: I DO understand some people don't have the knack for punctuation, spelling or the intricacies of the English language. But from this one book, you were able to make me care about this child, so you DO have that talent. Enlist the aid of someone who has the skills you lack (a lot of people do) to edit as you write each chapter and your ratings will go up. Then, as your ratings go up, you'll be able to earn money off of your hard work. That's how all writers get started. You have great life experience as subject matter. I've already downloaded some of your other books, and noticed others have already read those also, and I'll be reading those as well, so you have a good venue for having an audience of your first attempts at writing.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Smart and Approachable- Highly Recommended By Mary Widdicks Dr. Rodman takes a very difficult topic and makes it approachable and relatable in this easy-to-read guild to talking to children of all ages about divorce. She has a wonderful writing style that is equally likely to teach you something as it is to make you laugh out loud. Sometimes both at the same time. Her step-by-step guide to healthy parenting is worth reading even if you're not going through a divorce. I'd recommend this book to anyone who feels like they struggle to talk to their kids about uncomfortable subjects.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Rodman gives great advice on a number of difficult subjects By Meg Sanity The impact of divorce on children (anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, etc.) has been well documented. So how to alleviate these issues and maintain a safe "home base" for children to thrive even in the midst of changing environments? Dr. Rodman gives great advice on a number of difficult subjects, all in easy to read and apply language. I will definitely be recommending this book to clients and friends.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fellow clinical psychologist strongly recommends By PJazzNYC I am a clinical psychologist who plans to recommend Dr. Rodman's book to my clients who are struggling to help their children cope in the face of divorce. This book is a gem for divorcing parents who are looking for practical, sound guidance as to how to help their children navigate these muddy (and often treacherous) waters. This book is chock-full of sound strategies to help promote children's resilience in the aftermath of divorce. Dr. Rodman is careful to ground her theory in relatable real-life clinical examples so that her book remains reader-friendly and accessible throughout. Parents who are looking to find better ways to communicate with their co-parent (read the book and you will learn why Rodman eschews the term "ex") and their children (and/or stepchildren) post-divorce will not be disappointed. Also, rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, Rodman offers ways for the reader to tailor his or her approach depending upon the age/developmental level of the child in question (ranging all the way from toddlerhood to adolescence), the level of conflict between the former spouses, and the agreed-upon custody/visitation arrangement. Best of all, Dr. Rodman's compassion for her intended audience is evident throughout -- she comes across as a wisdom-dispensing ally who is there to offer sage advice regardless of where the reader is in his or her divorce/separation process. In a time when more and more marriages are dissolving, there appears to be a curious dearth of up-to-date literature that effectively addresses the common challenges faced by children from broken homes. Thankfully, Dr. Rodman answers the call of duty by providing us with this invaluable guide that can be referenced again and again as various divorce-related issues inevitably crop up over time. I understand that this is Dr. Rodman's first book (though she maintains a regular blog at www.drpsychmom.com) and I am looking forward to reading her future contributions.
