Wife Material tells a story of religious abuse and sexual repression in the modern Church of Christ denomination, an American sect that forbids women speaking in services. Elizabeth Campbell's parents are violinists. Her father seems gay. Their church disallows musical instruments and homosexuality. Elizabeth succumbs to the twisted violence in her family and the pressure for early marriage at conservative Waltham University, the flagship Church-of-Christ college where suicides abound. Then, she escapes fundamentalism through a series of liberating sins.

An insider's look into patriarchy By Carolyn Bailey In Wife Material, Dr. Deborah Cox explores the world of mainstream religious legalism and patriarchy. Although the setting of her story is not as extreme as that experienced by members of the Quiverfull movement (the teachings associated most readily with Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar), narrator Elizabeth experiences the same push toward early marriage as the ultimate goal of a woman's life. When she leaves her closed community and begins to experience life beyond its bubble, she struggles to find her voice and honor her authentic, God-given self. By interspersing early life events and Elizabeth's experiences in her later life, Cox shows the impact of environment on impressionable children. Wife Material is a worthy read for anyone attempting to deal with controlling systems or voices from childhood. For those raised in a similar environment, many scenes will seem familiar. For those who were not, Wife Material will provide an excellent education into the world of legalistic fundamentalism and the slanted perspective that often accompanies its teachings.

Wife Material book review By Rosellen Mientkiewicz Living authentically requires the ability to discern truth from lies, for which Elizabeth Campbell was shown no favor. Born into a family that thrived on appearances, hers is a world fraught with mixed messages and riddled with blatant contradictions. Lacking stability, predictability and connectivity, her parents exhist in their own strange and polarized bubbles, unable to nurture or hear the children. Bewilderment accompanied Lizzie during the formative years, creating a bleak and frightening backdrop where endless chaos reigned. From her thoughts to fears, confusion and realizations, and from her sinking to her swimming "Lizzie" ducks and weaves through life, attempting to make sense of the senseless. Then slowly and deliberately she begins to trust her own thoughts and before long, Elizabeth grows up - and into - herself. From one emotion to the next, Deborah Cox pens a raw, brave and startling story that captivates and compels the reader to contemplate their very own truth. Fasten your seat belt and prepare for a riveting read!

UFiles #2: Alexander's Army, by Chris d'Lacey

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—The second installment in the series, Alexander's Army picks up where A Dark Inheritance (Scholastic, 2014) left off. At the end of the first book, Michael is visiting the grave of his dead girlfriend Freya—or is she really dead? In the beginning of book two, Michael becomes convinced that Freya has returned from the dead as a crow and is following him around. His suspicions are confirmed when there is a bizarre attack by a murder of crows when he and his mother are at a local garden center. Michael, a rather unwilling agent for the clandestine organization Unicorne, is taxed with another mission. This time he must find out why there are comic books in a local store with Freya's image on the cover and no story inside. A set of collector cards from the school library book fair are the key to what creepiness is happening on the second floor of the comic book store. Michael visits the undersea craft that houses Unicorne and discovers Freya in a tank being converted from crow to girl. What he finds later in another tank stuns him and his sister Josie, who is pulled unwittingly into the plot. More clues about his missing father's whereabouts are revealed to Michael, but can he trust the source? Everyone seems to be lying to him, including Freya, returned to her girl form but still a member of the undead. Although action, mystery, bad guys, and scariness abound, this second book in the series seems disjointed. Readers may be confused by the long list of characters that appear and disappear as quickly as the incoming tides. Staunch fans of D'Lacey's "Last Dragon Chronicles" may be willing to sit through this book to find out if Michael ever finds his father, but chances are high they'll lose interest by the end. VERDICT Only purchase if the first book in the series has found loyal readers.—Kathy Kirchoefer, Henderson County Public Library, NC

It will leave you unable to wait for the final book which I feel will answer all of the questions presented in the first and second books in a spectacular way!

But be warned, you MUST read the first book, The Dark Inheritance before you read this one. Also if you are a little skittish about creepy stuff you should not read this book or the book before. It deals with some pretty creepy stuff so be warned. Other than that is is amazing. It will hook you from beginning to end, especially near the end. The cliffhanger ending isn't as big as the last book, but it is still good. Hope you enjoy this book just as much as I did.

Standouts and Stinkers By DCH1400 Conversion, by William Shick, was an excellent and deeply disturbing story that he admits to be one of his own favorites. It is the story of a convert to the Convergence of the Cyriss. It truly illustrates the power of faith and of a cult's brainwashing over all else. Without offering spoilers, the ending was horrifying, and left me wondering if there is really anything unchangeable in the human heart. 5 stars. This one has me thinking.Patriot's Crucible, by Aeryn Rudel, was a fairly standard combat and adventure story. I enjoyed it. It was a fun romp through Llael's occupied zone, an area I feel I don't get to see often enough in this fiction, but it wasn't nearly as good as the first story's character driven drama. The action and blocking were good of course. Mr. Rudel is a professional, whose writing was very good throughout (just not exceptional in this case). 4 stars. Not Every One Dies, by Douglas Seacat, was a wonderful story driven by the character of a mute serving woman in an Ordic castle that also stars the brutal Khadoran general The Butcher. This story showed the Butcher's softer side in a rare moment, and allowed us to see him in one of his less invincible moments. 5 stars.Warrior's Telos, by William Shick, is a chaotic "story" that illustrates the horror of battle quite well but lacks any real characterization or conflict, which left me quite disappointed in it, especially having seen what else Shick is capable of under other circumstances earlier in the collection. 2 stars.Swamped, by Aeryn Rudel, was generally not interesting to me. Something about the character just didn't grab me. But the writing was steady, and the action was definitely alright. 3 stars. The King's Own, by Douglas Seacat, was probably the novella that I enjoyed the most. It was definitely the longest story contained within this collection, and the one that combined character drama and combat the best. And in the end, without both, the Iron Kingdoms setting isn't one hundred percent complete, is it? 5 stars. Excellent action and a great heaping amount of great character.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 Stars - Quick fun, fun read! By Em & M Books When Cupid heads to Vegas to teach his cousin Vinnie the ropes…well you can bet things are going to get a bit crazy – especially since you know the odds are stacked against Vinnie being able to shoot his arrow straight! This was such a fun read that had me laughing, but also touched on some emotional issues as well.So we have Nikki, the bride to be who is in Vegas with her sister and BFF to celebrate her upcoming wedding. When she inadvertently steps in front of Vinnie’s arrow that was supposed to hit her sister she literally doesn’t know what hits her. And then there’s Josh, intent on climbing the corporate ladder and years from settling down…that is until Vinnie tries to fix things by launching another arrow at him. Of course once you are hit by Cupid’s (or Vinnie’s) arrow, it’s hard to fight the attraction, and Nikki and Josh can’t seem to help themselves.I really liked both Nikki and Josh and enjoyed seeing both of them grow as they come to terms with the feelings they have for each other. I liked the fact that they were both pretty open about their feelings and were honest about what they wanted. I was a bit disappointed in Nikki towards the end – I felt she had made such strides in understanding who she was, but fell back in to her safe zone. I got it, but it was still disappointing (and I really did not like her fiancé one bit!)I really liked Nikki’s BFF Jennifer. She kept it real while still giving Nikki the support you would expect from a BFF. Nikki’s sister Melanie was not my favorite – she kept it real, but seemed more concerned at times about Nikki’s fiancé David then she was about Nikki…hmmm, what was going on there?!!! David, now there was a man I just wanted to smack – he was such a jerk! All in all, this was a quick, fun read that I devoured in one sitting. As I said, there was some emotional parts to the story, but it definitely left me smiling and gave me some good laughs – especially watching Cupid and Vinnie work their Vegas love magic!I was gifted a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved this cute funny read where Cupid made a mistake or did he By Cyn This was a very cute, humorous, charming read. I love Cupid and his cousin who seemed to always get in trouble. I found this story believable and would not be surprised if this has happen in real life. Josh is such a wonderful sweet bachelor who has no plans to give up his single life anytime soon. Nikki is about to be married when you BFF and sister take her to Vegas for a wild weekend which just happens to get a little wilder than they meant it to. What happens when Cupids arrow strikes and life as they know it will never be the same?Ms. Wilton gives a wonderful plot with an easy to follow story which will keep you laughing and thinking OMG. Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse they sure do. The supporting characters are outstanding you have got to love the sister and the BFF. They told it like it is with wonderful honesty but stood beside the friend. Somehow I thought the sister had a little more going on with the Groom than the book shows. As this series goes on I wouldn’t be surprised to see the groom show up again with more trouble on his plate than he can handle. That is just my thoughts….. Nikki was great in the fact she stood up for what she did knowing she was part to blame. I just love how honest she was. This is one emotional read there is no doubt it will touch you in some way. I loved the open and honesty that the characters have. They talk things out knowing how the other feels. Things are said and over heard that puts Cupids plan on a different road. The author does keep a few things close to her chest and keeps you guessing as she gives a wonderful story of hope, love and misunderstandings. She even throws in a few surprises along the way. I can’t say I was to crazy about the groom to be he has a lot to learn about love. The author shows how different men and women think about the same wording or issues. I could relate to Nikki with family pressure and doing things you might not really want to do. I thought the story her mother gave her was touching…bad advice but it was nice to see how times have not changed and they haven’t. The ending was great the only issue I had was how fast Nikki took his words of love after the big deal she made of them when he was talking to his co worker. I thought that was a little over the top when she gave in to easy I know I wouldn’t. Even with that it still was a great read which was very entertaining. It was a book I didn’t want to put down that kept me smiling. This is the first I have read from this author and as I take a look of her other books there are a few that do interest me. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Wilton. If you are looking for a book that will keep you smiling that are entertaining which is a page turn than I suggest you pick this one up.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It 's a simple story, light but really fun By Veronica Marzini I thoroughly enjoyed Trouble in Vegas from beginning to end: is so funny, sweet, addictive that I could not put it down, I have read it in one afternoonCupid is trying to teach the basics of his "job" to his clumsy cousin Vinnie but combines a mess: his arrow hits the future bride Nikki. In order to repair Vinnie shoots an arrow even to the boy with whom she is talking. Their lives change forever. But not all evil comes to harm ......Nikki is a simple person, a good girl who never made mistakes or combined woes. Stressed by the preparations of her wedding decides to organize a short holiday in Las Vegas with her sister and a good friend. During their night out, she meets Josh and, accomplice wrong Cupid's arrows, she is strangely attracted to him. There is a very special chemistry between them: when their eyes meet they are lost. Nikki ends up doing something foolish that would never have thought to do: she spends the night with a complete stranger. Nikki is very confused, she feels guilty and expecially understands that it is not just sex. She doesn't know what to do: doesn't want to hurt her future husband, can't annul the marriage, her parents have spent so much money but can't even marry a man she does not love. Even Josh doesn't know what to do: for him now counts only his career, marriage is not a priority but now he can't live without Nikki. It 's a simple story, light but really fun and very addictive, with lovely characters and great dialogue.I am happy that it is the first book in the series Looking For Trouble?", can not wait to read the next one.Highly recommended, ideal as beach reading

Set in a small industrial town at the start of the 20th century, this is the humorous story of Edward “Denry” Machin. Denry is an impulsive, opportunistic, and occasionally lucky entrepreneur with few scruples where money-making is concerned. Not especially likeable yet not entirely loathsome, Denry makes for a very entertaining character to both the fictional townsfolk and readers of this tale alike. A story full of hilarity and sure to entertain any reader, this book is an ideal addition to any bookshelf and a veritable must-read for fans of Bennett’s work. Enoch Arnold Bennett was an English writer, most renowned as a novelist but also working in other fields such as journalism, film, and propaganda. Originally written in 1911, we are proud to republish this classic book now with a new introductory biography of the author.

The Card - A Story of Adventure in the Five Towns, by Arnold Bennett

About the Author Arnold Bennett is famous for his realistic novels about the Five Towns - the 'Five Towns' being the pottery towns of his youth. His virtuosity as a writer was his manner of depicting simple things and ordinary people in an intriguing way for the readers. He has a warm and kind understanding for his characters, particularly when describing the intricate details of their dreary routine lives. (Enoch) Arnold Bennett was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, in 1867. Arnold followed his father into the legal profession but at the age of 21, he decided to leave his father's firm and moved to London and worked as a solicitor's clerk. He won a literary competition in ""Tit Bits"" magazine in 1889 and in 1893 became assistant editor of the journal, Woman. He published his first essentially autobiographical novel The Man from the North in 1898. His best work is contained in his novels of the 'Five Towns' which include Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908), Clayhanger (1910), The Card (1911), Hilda Lessways (1911) and These Twain (1916). During the First World War, he became Director of Propaganda at the War Ministry. He refused a knighthood in 1918. In 1926, he began writing an influential weekly article on books for the Evening Standard newspaper.

A story of a man's quest for a better life for himself. Amusing and informative. A glimpse into a different time and the way things were for people back then. Worth the read.

Yes I tend to agree - its an earlier-day Ferris Bueller; the guy can do no wrong - his life just gets better & better, no matter how many mistakes he makes. And, its free - enjoy!

Picking up on lessons learned from The Library of Time, Zadeekee returns to earth. This time Zadeekee takes Alex on a Halloween adventure into the deepest, darkest recesses of the unconscious mind. It's a ghoulish, ghastly journey full of insights pertaining to the dark side of the universe. (See alexandermarchand.com for information on getting a paperback version of this book.)

In this third installation of the Undreaming Chronicles, Alex Marchand brilliantly combined "A Course in Miracles" and Halloween themes to explore the unconscious mind and how the ego permeates perception of a universe. It's dark, fun, and ultimately enlightening. I'd say it's not for the faint of heart, but it made me remember I have no heart; only Spirit.

Like the previous two installments, it takes a journey, ala Dante’s Inferno, through the subconscious. As in previous works, Professor M draws from his formidable knowledge of many diverse disciplines to demonstrate how the ego is at work in all aspects of our existence. Once again he uses his uncanny ability to connect what otherwise would seem to be unrelated subjects in order to reflect how the ego is keeping us trapped in the illusion. It is fascinating to me how he is able to see how the dots connect. One of the primary reasons I read his work is to see what he has come up with.Like the previous two UC books, there is process weaved into the storyline in volume 3. (As opposed, in my option, to the textbook approach in The Universe is a Dream and The Universe is Virtual). I like the process approach as it has a beginning, middle and end, it helps me to comprehend the concepts Professor M is presenting. What is unique about this installment is that Professor M demonstrates how the ego impacts the socio-economic aspect of our culture. His approach is gutsy and provocative (and reminiscent of two earlier works: Dissolving Dollars: Exposing The Debt-Based Insanity Behind Modern Money and Beyond the Government-Haunted World: A Comic Guide to Voluntaryism, Free Markets, and the Non-Aggression Principle). The trip isn’t necessary pretty either, but nothing involving the ego is pretty. There is some shock value here, but it is contextual and non-gratuitous. He is fearless in his approach, and doesn’t hesitate to show the reader his vulnerabilities in his own anecdotal battle with the ego, even if means going without his manhood. (You will have to read the book if you want to know what it meant by that.) There is an irony here that Professor M is obviously very intelligent and talented, but isn’t pretentious in an attempt to leave the reader feeling stupid. Ironically enough, he doesn’t use his ego to explain the ego.Even though this book has a Halloween-theme, we are reminded that we don’t need scary costumes or horror stories/movies. The scariest thing in existence is the ego, and that is an illusion.I purchased the .mobi version of this book.

By kiwi_chick_2882 Pretty sure that Dog Tags just muscled its way into top spot and is now my favourtie Brazen Boys novel.A new brazen boy just hit my kindle and this time hes got dog tags. This is a m/m romances with a military flare. Jessie notices that Brandon, the boy next door who he went to high school with, is back home from the army for a few weeks over summer. And all that time hes been enlisted has made him in to one fine specimen. Brandon was alway the silent broody scary guy and school and now Jessie's brother wants him to go next door and get him to mow their lawn. Naturally Jessie is a bit apprehensive, its no easy thing to ask your hunky next door neighbour to mow your lawn.Daryl always manages to make me laugh, this time with lines like this "Please, listen to the tune and don't mind the Spear Of Destiny in my pants."I always have a soft spot for characters that tend to ramble internally as you read.I had a big grin on my face as I read this, its so much sweeter than some of the other stories and my romantic heart likes that. Dog tags has a wee bit more of a story entwined in to it and honestly I can't find a single fault. To be it was just perfect.I read this in one sitting and regretfully it didn't take me long at all to finish it. I'm excited to see what the next brazen boy has in store for us.

I just love Daryl Banner's writing!!! Once again when I got to the last page of this story, I kept jabbing at my kindle hoping for at least another page or two .. I'm not demanding lol! I will say that I hope Daryl is busy writing the next Brazen Boys book! Each is a standalone and I'm enjoying them! Jesse and Brandon have been neighors most of their lives. Jesse was the kid picked on in school and a music nerd. Brandon was the loner reject everyone made rumors about and was afraid of. Jesse and Brandon were never friends, never spoke, and only did now because Brandon came home on leave from the Army. Jesse's stepbrother brought them together by wanting Brandon to mow their lawn, and in exchange, he asked Jesse to give him piano lessons. It's really a keyboard! Well, the lessons led to so much more .... three weeks of passionate, steamy, raw sex! I just lived and felt their relationship. This book had the best lines in it. The humping the couch scene while looking out the window still has me laughing!!!! I absolutely loved this book and its what I needed to read to make me laugh and smile. A BIG 5 star for me!!!!.
