When I say this I don't just mean Minecraft books in general because there is a lot of spam and pamphlets out there parading around as books. He only has three authors he will read books by in the Minecraft category, which is the only category he will read from anyway. "Diary" is at the top of that list because "Diary" is his favorite author. This entire series of books has been a godsend because it has my nephew enjoying reading. This book about an Ender Dragon named Ember is what we have grown to expect from this author. It was entertaining and well put together.

UNBUTTONING THE BRIT…

In the business world, Brodie Fortune Hayes is known as a man of no mercy. The all-work, no-play PR consultant is sure he'll have no trouble correcting the image problems plaguing the Cowboy Country theme park. There's just one complication: the green-eyed beauty sitting behind the boss's desk who makes his pulse race like a roller coaster!

Caitlyn Moore never imagined working side by side with Brodie after sharing a most out-of-character night of passion with him a few months before! And now, thanks to her dad's absence-by-illness, she's his boss? Brodie's bottom-line mentality is as infuriating as his blue bedroom eyes are intoxicating—but Cait is convinced that there's a heart lurking beneath his designer armor. Perhaps she can prove to him that love is the greatest Fortune of all…

He had a British accent.Caitlyn Moore had locked eyes with the tall hunk of gorgeousness only a moment before he'd moved across the room to stand next to her. The accent was the icing on top of an already delicious-looking bit of eye candy.Too bad eye candy wasn't on her diet."I beg your pardon?" she said."Are you here in support of a friend or relative of one of the brides or one of the grooms? Or, perhaps, you're acquainted with all of them?"When he'd said all of them, he wasn't kidding. There were four of each—this was the soon-to-be-famous Grand Fortune wedding—and Caitlyn didn't know a single one of them personally. From what she'd heard, the Fortunes always did everything in a big way."None of the above," she said."So you're a wedding crasher, then?" Twin dimples winked at her when he smiled."No, of course not."Dressed in an expensive-looking dark suit and crisp white shirt, the Brit had a cocksure James Bond air about him. He probably didn't have to work very hard at getting women to engage. Still, Caitlyn didn't feel like explaining that she hated weddings and wouldn't be here unless it was absolutely necessary. She'd come in place of her parents, who had received the invitation to Horseback Hollow's social event of the decade…in a town this small, it might even be the wedding of the century.Tonight not one, but four Fortunes had gotten married on their parents' sprawling ranch. They'd exchanged vows on a huge outdoor stage that had been constructed for the ceremony. She'd overheard someone talking about how the large red barn on the property had been renovated especially for tonight's reception. The place looked like a magical wonderland lit by thousands of candles and twinkle lights. There were so many flowers she shuddered to think of the bottom line on the florist's bill. It might even surpass the catering bill for the sumptuous-looking buffet dinner, which she was going to miss because her objective was to sign the guest book and leave. No one would miss her if she left a little early, especially since she was there on a mission that might best be described as keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer. In this case, the Fortunes—all fifty jillion of them—were the enemy. It still baffled her that the Fortunes, who had gone to such lengths to get the locals all riled up, making everyone believe that her family's venture, Cowboy Country USA, a Western-themed amusement park, was the root of all evil and would be the demise of Horseback Hollow, would invite her family to the wedding. Her parents had regretted missing out, but her father had fallen ill this morning, and her mother had stayed home to care for him. Caitlyn had come to the wedding on their behalf, to represent the Moore family and Cowboy Country. She wasn't here to glad-hand and win people over, of course. She'd simply signed the guest book Alden Moore and family, a subtle reminder that Moore Entertainment was not the enemy. On the contrary. They wanted to be the good neighbor, getting along with the residents of Horseback Hollow, every one of whom, it seemed, had been invited to the wedding. She looked at the Brit, who wasn't acting shy about eyeing her.And that part of the saying that talked about keeping your friends close? Yeah. It definitely applied to this new friend.A moment ago, she was sure her work here was done, and all she needed to do was wait for the brides and grooms to finish their first dance before she made a discreet exit; except now the hot guy with the cool accent was smiling at her like he found her utterly fascinating."All right, then, love," he purred. "What is your story?"He pinned her with the most spectacular pair of blue eyes she'd ever seen before arching his right brow a fraction of an inch in a manner that suggested he was waiting for her to elaborate. And then there was that accent. Why had she always been a sucker for an accent? It was her libido's Achilles' heel."What?" she said. "Are you the bouncer here to throw me out?"He crossed his arms and appraised her in a less than subtle way that had her insides going all warm and melty. She needed to stop that right now. Mirroring his stance, she crossed her arms and tilted her chin up, hoping for some self-preservation, but her warm and melty insides offered no structure. Her resolve started to slowly crumble under the heat."If you must know," she said. "I'm here by proxy.""I didn't realize wedding invitations were transferable," he said. "Don't worry, I won't land you in it, because—" he leaned in and whispered in her ear "—really, I don't belong here, either."I won't land you in it. He was so maddeningly, adorably British it was almost too much, and he was standing so close that she could smell his cologne—something that was probably expensive. Something vaguely green and woodsy—maybe sandalwood…and some cedar—and oh, so manly and delicious."So you're the one who doesn't belong here?" she countered. "How do you know I'm not the wedding police, ready to bounce you?"His eyes glistened as his gaze made an even bolder perusal of her body, meandering down the length of her and back up again. Her heart beat with the pulse of the music, and she reveled in this irresistible, magnetic physical awareness."Not in that dress, love."His breath held a faint hint of peppermint."What's wrong with my dress?""Not a bloody thing."He flashed a smile that showcased perfect white teeth, and there were those dimples again.Oh, God, just take me now.A thrill the likes of which Caitlyn had never experienced skittered down her spine, waking up places that had been sleeping for far too long. This was…fun. A lot more fun than she'd dreamed she'd have tonight. As a waiter passed by with a tray of champagne, he grabbed two flutes and handed one to her."Thank you." She raised her glass to him, and he followed suit, clinking his to hers before they sipped. She'd purchased the red dress and strappy heels on the fly this morning. Since she'd only planned on visiting her parents for a few days, she'd packed light and casual. She hadn't brought along anything that was appropriate for an elaborate Valentine's Day wedding. She'd been pleasantly surprised to find the flirty little dress in a boutique in Lubbock. With his eyes on her, it felt a whole lot sexier than it had when she'd tried it on and decided it would do. She hadn't really been excited about the dress or the thought of attending the wedding of four couples she didn't know. It had barely been a year since she'd called off her own engagement. The only reason she'd agreed to come tonight was because it had seemed so important to her father. He'd asked her to represent the family because he thought it would be a sign of solidarity for the good folks of Horseback Hollow, or possibly considered a slight if no one from the Moore family bothered to attend. As if anyone would even notice in such a crowd.Who knew she'd meet someone so fun to play with. Maybe she wasn't in quite as big a hurry to leave after all. Then again, if she knew what was good for her, she'd leave right now before she gave this Brit a chance to charm her new red dress right off her."What's your name?" he asked."Cait—" She always went by Caitlyn, but tonight it felt more fun to simply be Cait."Ah, as in Kiss Me, Kate?""Oh, are you a fan of musical theater?""Not particularly. I simply wanted to say that." Their gazes locked. "Kiss me…Cait."For the life of her, she didn't know what came over her, because the next thing she knew, she was leaning in and claiming his lips. She didn't even know his name, but she adored the taste of him—champagne and mint…and something else she couldn't name, something that made her lose herself a little bit and lean in a little closer. His kiss sang through her veins, sent spirals of longing coursing through her, causing the fire deep in her most personal places to rage.It had been a long time since she'd kissed a man. Since Eric— No, she wouldn't think about him. Eric would not ruin this moment…or this night, which was becoming better and better with each passing second. The sound of the bandleader inviting the wedding guests to join the happy couples on the dance floor edged out the interloping thoughts of her ex. When she pulled back, the reality of what she'd just done washed away any lingering residue of Eric. She'd kissed a man she'd known for less than ten minutes. And she wanted to kiss him again.Bloody hell. Those were the only words echoing in Brodie Fortune Hayes's mind as he locked lips with Cait. And he meant those words in the best, most reverent way possible. Just when he thought he'd seen everything, life threw him a curvy surprise wrapped in a sexy red dress. He was obviously finding it difficult to express exactly how much he liked this shapely little package. All he knew was what had started out as a night of familial obligation was turning out to be rather mind-blowing.Cait pulled back just enough to gaze up at him through thick, dark lashes. She had the loveliest green eyes he'd ever seen. "By the way, what's your name?""Brodie," he heard himself murmur."Brodie the Brit," she said. "Nice to meet you. I'm Cait from Chicago. I'd shake your hand, but…" She leaned in and dusted his lips with a featherlight kiss. Then she smiled up at him, looking rather pleased with herself."Charming to meet you, Cait from Chicago."The band shifted from an up-tempo tune into a slow, sultry number just as he decided to lean in for another taste of those lips, but Cait pulled away."Listen," she said. "This has been fun, but I really should go now.""What? But we just got here. Well, we just got here."He reached out and ran the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip. "I'm quite eager to see where we'll go next."She opened her mouth as if she were about to say something, hesitated then pressed her lips together, drawing her bottom lip between her teeth in a way that nearly drove him mad."Dance with me?" he said.Of course, he wouldn't force her to do anything she didn't want to do, but he'd try his best to convince her."Just one dance," he said. "If you want to go after that, I won't argue."He took her hand, fully prepared to let go if she protested. But she didn't.As he led her onto the dance floor, he noticed his brother Oliver dancing with Shannon Singleton, the pretty brunette they'd sat with during the ceremony. Oliver seemed to be lost in the moment as he gazed into Shannon's eyes. But when Cait sank into Brodie's arms and he pulled her closer, his body responded, and then it was as if they were the only two people in the entire world. They swayed to the strains of "Unforgettable" and kept dancing close through a couple of fast songs, until the band decided to mix things up with a country-rock medley, and an overzealous guest, who was dancing with a beer in his hand, tried to demonstrate his John Travolta moves and upended it on the dance floor."Okay, what do you say we take a break?" Brodie suggested. "How about if I get us something to drink?""Actually, I could use some fresh air," Cait said. "It's a little stuffy in here."With the number of people dancing and drinking in the confines of the renovated barn, it was a bit close. It was unseasonably warm for February. In fact, he'd heard his mum and aunt Jeanne Marie say it was as if spring had graced them with an early visit, which was undoubtedly fortuitous for the four couples who had said their vows."That sounds like a great idea," he said. "Wait right here. I'll get us some refreshments to go."He tipped the bartender fifty dollars and was rewarded with a chilled, unopened bottle of champagne and two flutes. On his way back to Cait, he plucked a long-stemmed red rose out of one of the many freestanding floral arrangements. He took the bounty back to where he'd left her, but she wasn't there. As he made a three-hundred-sixty-degree turn, it dawned on him that it probably hadn't been a brilliant move to leave her alone. He hadn't been gone that long, but if she really had wanted to leave, this would've presented the perfect opportunity for her to make her getaway. His gut tightened at the thought, but then he sobered. Really, if she had decided to go, it was for the best. He was set to return to London in two days. True. Cait of the magical lips had an unnerving ability to knock him void of all common sense, but really, what would they do two days from now when he boarded the plane to go home? The likelihood of him traveling to Chicago anytime soon was slim. Business was booming at his company, Hayes Consulting, the management consulting firm for which he'd sacrificed everything. It had been a struggle even to find time to come for the wedding. If truth be told, he wasn't happy about taking time off for four cousins he barely knew. It had only been a couple of years since his mother had discovered that she was adopted and had three siblings who had so many grown children that it seemed to be necessary to marry them off in bulk. Still, it had been important to his mother that he attend this affair. She was the one woman in the world for whom he'd drop everything. Plus, it was a chance to catch up with his brother Oliver. All the negativity drained away when he turned and saw Cait with her wrap and handbag, making her way toward him in the crowd. She was still here, and suddenly nothing else mattered. He handed her the rose."This is beautiful," she said, bringing the flower to her nose. "How romantic, sir."Her eyes glinted and at that moment, Brodie was sure she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever had the privilege to set eyes on."And what else do you have there?""A spot of champagne. What do you say we get out of here? There's something I'd like to show you."

By Alexia Janie Evans "My Fair Fortune" by Nancy Robards Thompson is a part of the series 'The Fortunes of Texans - Cowboy Country.' Even though this is part of a series it is a book that can be read alone, but like most of my reads that are series I recommend reading the series. LOVE them. This book is Brodie Fortune Hayes and Caitlyn Moore's story. Problems happen with the Cowboy Country theme park, and Caitlyn's father is hospitalized. She comes to town to help her father and get this business off the ground. They meet at one of the Grand Fortune Weddings and Caitlyn doesn't trust any of the fortunes. She knows Brodie as a Hayes. What happens when she finds out he's a Fortune is complete distrust. They both must learn to trust so that they can move forward to love that is waiting in the wings.

The author is on point when talking about the Power of love. The way he said the power for blonde hair and blue eyes or for a fabricated god, well that is extremely spot on and even though he manages to say it in a funny way you can't really miss the message. Brilliantly executed.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and this was another one that didn't disappoint. Again outside of my normal "comfort zone" but ... By Jen Moore Way too short! I'm still waiting for Anglin's full length novel :) I am always intrigued by his titles, and this was another one that didn't disappoint. Again outside of my normal "comfort zone" but well worth straying over to the Dark Side for!

She has her life all mapped out for success. College was a blast but "Amy" learns some life lessions during the summer before graduate school. Being an adult is not as easy as it appears. Decisions become harder, especially if there is a handsome young man involved.

I am familiar with the "Shelby County Lifestyle" and Ms. Kramer does a GREAT job sharing that with us. She tells her story in a page turner fashion that keeps you into the book. It goes quick, so take it on vacation, or any a business plane ride. I can't wait to read her next book!

Mom retelling her kids the story of how she met and fell in love with her dad. I enjoyed the setting as it is set in Iowa and Omaha, where I love. Sweet little story of a woman finding herself and figuring out what matters to her in life. Wondering if it is autobiographical...

About the Author Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on 7 February 1812 in Portsea Island (Portsmouth). He was the second child of his parents, John Dickens and Elizabeth Dickens. His father worked as a clerk in Navy Pay Office. In 1815, John Dickens was transferred to London, the whole family moved with him and settled in Kent, where Charles spent the early days of his life to the age of 11. Charles had a few years of private education in Chatham, Kent. By the end of 1822, the Dickens family was heavily indebted as they lived beyond their means. According to the laws of the day, John Dickens’ creditors forced him into the Marshalsea debtors’ prison in Southwark, London in 1824. The wife and youngest children joined him in the prison, according to the norms of the society. Charles was 12 years of age at that time. He moved with Elizabeth Roylance, a family friend, in Camden Town. Later, he lived in the house of an agent for the Insolvent Court, Archibald Russell. On Sundays, Charles used to spend his time at the Marshalsea with his sister Frances, who was studying at the Royal Academy of Music. To pay for his board and to help his family, Charles had no other choice but to leave school and work at Warren’s Blacking Warehouse located on Hungerford Stairs, near the present Chairing Cross Railway Station. He earned 6 Shillings a week for a 10-hour day work. The working conditions for labor class were very harsh in those days, Charles had to go through the hardest period of his life during these days. These hardships left a lasting impression on Charles’ intellect, most of his works revolve around the reform of socio-economic and labor conditions.

Entertaining but not Dickens' best satire By Suzanne C Few readers seem to realize that the venerated Charles Dickens also wrote puerile satire pieces for his own entertainment. The Sketches books (young gentlemen, young ladies, young couples) are in this vein, with some more entertaining than others.Sketches of Young Gentlemen is probably accurate to a fault, but that jokes are a little lost on modern readers. Best enjoyed by BBC Classics fans, historians, and anyone who likes social commentary of yore, this book is a short read and generally entertaining. The formatting of this free ebook is quite good and should pose no problems.

Supposedly, Dickens describes the attributes of various types of young men, for the edification of young women. It's very, very dated in the descriptions, and some of it simply doesn't pertain to our times. But as a period piece, it's priceless. Quite an insight into former values of a bygone age.

A Bonfire of the Vanities for contemporary London

From A. N. Wilson, the renowned historian and novelist, comes a stunningly bold new work of fiction set in the darkly glamorous media world. Wilson's London is a bleak, if occasionally hilarious, place: murderous, lustful, money-obsessed, and haunted by strange gods.

The Daily Legion is a rag that peddles celebrity gossip and denounces asylum seekers. The secret is that its financial survival depends on the support of a brutal African government. Recklessly defending this corrupt dictatorship, the newspaper faces off against Father Vivyan Chell, an Anglican monk and missionary who is working to overthrow the corrupt regime. They wage a smear campaign against the priest. Freedom fighters join the battle. Violence escalates.

Called "a big, broad, sweeping book, as disturbing as it is funny" by The Guardian, My Name Is Legion is a savage satire on the morality of contemporary Britain-its press, its politics, its church, its rich, its underclass. At times shocking, at times tragic, it is a provocative take on present-day England, delivering both delicious fun and acid social commentary.

My Name Is Legion: A Novel, by A. N. Wilson

From Publishers Weekly Wilson's latest novel is like a medieval gargoyle set on an outhouse—the elegance and elaboration of its malignancy is in dramatic disproportion to the value of the object it graces. Said object is the Daily Legion, a British tabloid run by a magnate of exemplary wickedness, Lennox Mark, who hails from a former African colony now run by a General Bindiga. Mark's wealth derives from his "silent partnership" with Bindiga in slave-labor copper mines and cocoa plantations. If Mark is the Mark of the Beast in this novel, goodness is represented by Father Vivyan Chell, a Thomas Merton–ish character whose mission in Bindiga's Zinariya acquainted him with Bindiga's grievous misrule. Now back in London, Chell is planning some possibly violent protest upon Bindiga's upcoming visit to England. To disable Chell, Mark employs a boy named Peter d'Abo to accuse him of pederasty. Unbeknownst to Chell and Mark is that Peter is a link between the two of them: both had flings with his mother, and either could be his father. Peter's mind is a cacophony of voices, a parody of English pop culture: he is literally possessed. Wilson triangulates between the poisonous office politics of the Legion, the trail of Peter's madness and Chell's frustration with an England that has become "a pointless, amoral cauldron of putrescence." The dreadful, scheming vitality of Wilson's characters richly rewards the persistent reader. Agent, Gillon Aitken. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist *Starred Review* Loathsome media mogul Lennox Mark owns the fictional British tabloid The Daily Legion, a bastion of celebrity gossip and gratuitous sleaze. The paper has its own dirty little secret: it's funded by the corrupt African government of Zinariya, whose ruthless leader employs slave labor in his cocoa plantations and copper mines. Enter Vivyan Chell, a British-born monk whose missionary work in Zinariya exposed him to the country's nefarious ways. When Father Chell, now a parish priest in England, voices his objections to the paper and its backers, Lennox Mark enlists a boy named Peter to disparage the Father's name. Alas, the reader knows something neither the monk nor the magnate do: both men had affairs with Peter's mother, and either might be Peter's father. Wilson, a Brit whose more than 30 books include nonfiction on Jesus and C. S. Lewis, serves up multiple plots and blistering barbs that bore holes in every page. The novel's most compelling character is Peter, who grapples with multiple personalities (including Jeeves and Bertie Wooster) that play like a satirical soundtrack of British popular culture. Tom Wolfe meets Evelyn Waugh in this portrayal of modern-day England as a place of shame and blame, where even the pious have a penchant for the perverse. Review "Profoundly sobering, yet side-splittingly funny . . . brave and satisfying."--The Boston Globe"A. N. Wilson's career has followed several paths . . . and he puts them all to good use in this sprawling comedy of ideas that gleefully skewers the newspaper business and just about everything else."--The New York Times Book Review "Wilson never misses the mark. . . . It's a testament to the multivalent nature of Wilson's talent that he can portray this frightening family so tenderly in a novel that usually flashes with steely wit."--The Washington Post Book World "Precise and piercing satire . . . It's Wilson's characters, though, that give the book its depth, all fully drawn, none escaping his sharp sword."--Richmond Times-Dispatch

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Maddened among the Gadarene swine, in modern London By John L Murphy Wilson, a biographer of Jesus and Paul, an historian of the Victorians and the loss of faith in God, and a veteran novelist, is also a journalist. His authorial breadth serves him and the reader well in this sprawling blend of social commentary, Fleet Street satire, and theologically tinged thriller set in today's London. Imagine Evelyn Waugh's "Scoop" updated to a stand-in for Robert Mugabe, insert Lugardia for Rhodesia and Zinariya for Zimbabwe, and place as the protagonist a British colonial, first a soldier there, then a celebrity monk preaching liberation theology against General Bendiga's corrupt regime. The regime, supported by and supporting Lennox Marx's "red-top" tabloid "The Daily Legion," finds itself clashing by a psychomachia within a teenager who carries many secrets and scandals inside his fevered consciousness. We hear the multiple personas of a teenaged boy, Peter, who takes on the fearsome voices of one possessed, perhaps by demons as much as by schizophrenia. He's a modern version of the man who lived among the tombs that was cured by Jesus, who drove out the devils into the Gadarene swine in that eerie Gospel episode. It's an ambitious novel. The fates of a few characters, such as blackmailed Ed Hartley, the conceptual artist Hans Busch, or counselor Kevin Currey, appear too muddled. This may be intentional, to show the cruelty of their predicaments, but I wondered what roles they served; the Happy Band's ultimate goals also remained shadowed. Still, these are minor shortcomings that do not detract much from the cumulative interest that accrues as, once you're into the novel a couple of hundred of its five-hundred pages, the novel begins linking its many subplots.Wilson, better than Nicola Barker's experimental novel "Darklands" (also reviewed by me here and on Amazon US recently), evokes how many characters inhabit a young man's mind. In demon-haunted Peter, we hear an array of stock figures from stereotypical England, stolid then and multicultural now. Wilson wittily, but with compassion and justice, enters Peter and many other figures with intelligence, energy, and tact. This novel, although about sensationalism, by its balance of tell-all gossip and elegant restraint, manages to convince you of the reality of even the exaggerated figures he-- especially at the "Legion"-- delights in parading. The novel captures a grimy, rainy, weary capital, especially its southern bank and inner suburban districts, those less chronicled. The chav, the Coldstream Guard, the campaigning padre, the frightened child, the Bahamian immigrant, the social climbing Eurotrash, the careful spy, the frustrated mistress, the overeducated scribbler, the sashaying hack: all sound as they should. The city, too, enters, seen from a decaying urban park: "From afar, beyond the neglected graves of ten thousand south Londoners," Catford's "high-rise blocks" and Bromley's "endless streets" sulk. "Today they suggested a limitless waste of life, a humanity which stretched sadly as far as the eye could see, indulging in its youth in the activities which so obsessed the graffiti-artists in the bandstand; scurrying, in middle age, to the bus stops and railway stations which, even in the heavy rain, the eye could discern, to go to work in London, to pay for the mean residences which stretched in endless terraces; lying, eventually, in the cemetery whose identical headstones made their cruel commentary on the rows of houses of those who were buried there." (360)God seems absent from here, often if not always. Wilson gives Father Chell two magnificent sermons, one a rant on liberation theology, one a eulogy about the death of the "God of the Philosophers" on Calvary replaced by a post-resurrection deity who "had looked very much like the gardener sweeping the path" in the Garden. (300) Father Chell speculates later about the departure of God from humanity as symbolized by the Ascension-- the human construct rises into the sky that we populate with gods. Meanwhile, in the city where some still pray, the voles and dogs and cats "breathed and moved and fed without the need to project their mentalities into the indifferent surroundings, or to look for personality in the vast impersonal processes of the natural world." (426)Wilson's omniscient narrator holds back, rarely directly editorializing, but when the craft justifies such an entrance, the effect's moving. While not a showy writer, Wilson takes care on every page. In the indirect first-person voice that eases in and out of his main characters, he makes comparisons to Bonhoeffer, Homer, Marx, Dostoevsky, Christ, or Shakespeare that reflect the level of a character's own knowledge. One journalist, having compromised on early promise for a steady income: "Now he sounded like a man who was so used to mixing with, and writing for, people stupider than himself that he was in a world where just to know the names of great writers was something for which you expected applause." (214)Such allusions, occasionally deployed, work well. "On the TV news, when the idiocy or wickedness of politicians had forced another great section of humanity into a position where home was a place of dread, one saw them queuing at borders, streaming down dusty roads or railway tracks, many an Aeneas with old Anchises on his shoulders, refugees, old women bundled in prams, fly-blown babies. And always such bedraggled figures in flight had grabbed, quite arbitrarily perhaps, their 'things'. But why in such circumstances of despair had they bothered to take anything at all, unless that was merely clutching at an object, as a child clutched a comfort-blanket, offered in inconsolable circumstances a faint alternative to consolation?" (295)England here has little pride left. The parks once meant for adults now find their cafeterias, playgrounds, and benches coated with trash and scrawls. "The Queen, no longer a radiant young woman, now looked like an old frump made out of pastry, grumpy and about to crack into floury powder." (476) The ceremony of welcoming Lennox Marks as a Lord shows to such as Chell how primitive, beneath the Americanized fast-food, muggings, petty crime, and fumes and endless swearing of a dumbed-down populace, ritual endures in "the tribal hierarchy which still persisted here. This man, for all his dependence on modern techniques of communications to make his millions, on plate-glass towers and computerized newspaper production, wanted nothing more than to drape himself with dead animal skins and, mumbling imprecations to the spirits, make obesiance to his tribal chieftains." (490)The loss of national will-- as a Brigadier explains with the IRA battling for a compromise so as to make the Ulster statelet "seem implausible," and so come to power-- dominates a cowed yet cock-headed Britain. Wilson may find hope in a few individuals that as always refuse to serve their prostituted masters. But, these by the end of this story seem few. The position of the kingdom, dependent on oppression to keep its post-colonial power, manacled to capitalism that presents both the only workable situation at present and the method by which billions suffer to serve a billion, deepens the ideas that the characters fumble with, as journalists, readers, and perpetrators in a society with little belief and lots of junk. Wilson reports in an often much funnier (if rather scattershot in its many easy if deserving targets!) prose than my serious excerpts may have indicated, but his moral analysis can be scathing.

About the Author Dr. Sonali Ruder is a physician, chef, recipe developer, and food blogger. Her passion for food started several years ago when she was doing her residency training in New York City. In 2007 she entered a recipe contest on a whim and ended up being selected from thousands of entrants to compete on a cooking competition on the Food Network. After a few years of competitive cooking, Sonali decided to take her passion for cooking one step further by enrolling in culinary school at the Institute of Culinary Education. While she was a student, she started her popular food blog The Foodie Physician where she uses her medical and culinary backgrounds to help readers create meals that are nutritious and full of flavor. In addition to practicing medicine, Sonali also develops recipes and is a contributing writer for several national magazines, cookbooks, and websites. She recently moved to sunny Fort Lauderdale where she lives with her husband and daughter.

This is one of the most exciting times in your life and over the next nine months you will be filled with anticipation about meeting the little person that’s growing inside of you.Pregnancy is truly a life-changing experience. Your body will be going through profound changes, and you need the proper nutrients to fuel those changes. You probably have lots of questions about what you should be eating to optimize your health and provide the best start for your baby. You may get a lot of advice from family and friends who want to share their own experiences. You’ll likely hear conflicting information about what kinds of foods you should and shouldn’t be eating and how much weight gain is normal. The truth is that recommendations about diet and nutrition during pregnancy are constantly changing as more research becomes available. This can be confusing and frustrating. Don’t worry, you are not alone! Studies actually show that many pregnant women don’t receive any advice from their healthcare providers on nutrition and proper weight gain in pregnancy. It’s not surprising considering the fact that most doctors get minimal education on nutrition in medical school. In fact, the average medical student gets only about 20 hours of nutrition instruction. This is really quite unfortunate considering how important diet is in preventing many medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The good news is, by reading this book, you’ve already taken a step in the right direction.I developed an interest in food and nutrition when I was doing my residency training in Emergency Medicine. After seeing patients day after day with diet-related medical conditions, I became inspired to learn more about the role a healthy diet could play in preventing those diseases. At the same time, I started experimenting a lot in the kitchen. Ten years after starting my medical training, I decided to further pursue my passion for cooking by enrolling in culinary school. That’s where I learned the fundamentals of combining flavors and using different cooking techniques to create dishes that are nutritious and full of flavor. Healthy food can and should be delicious! Now my goal is to share both my medical and culinary knowledge with others, to empower them so that they can make smart diet and lifestyle choices. In pregnancy, this is even more important because what you eat not only affects your health but also the health of your baby.Eating well during pregnancy means overcoming different challenges as your body goes through a myriad of changes over the nine months. In the first trimester, if you’re in the majority of women, you will probably experience some degree of morning sickness. During these weeks, you may be less focused on a proper diet and more focused on keeping anything down. This is a critical time when many major developments are occurring in your baby. This book will give you practical tips on how to overcome your symptoms to ensure that you’re getting the proper nutrition you need. Once the first trimester has passed, you’ll enter what is often called the “honeymoon period” of pregnancy, the second trimester. After months of nausea, many women get their appetites back with a vengeance. All of those food aversions that drove you crazy may suddenly be replaced by intense food cravings. Hopefully you’re one of those people who crave fresh fruits and vegetables but if you’re not, then you may be prone to overeating. During this time, it’s important to maintain a healthy diet while also not depriving yourself. We’ll discuss what kinds of foods you should be eating and how much weight you should be gaining. Finally, in the third trimester when you’re in the homestretch, your uterus is growing bigger and bigger and putting increasing pressure on your stomach and digestive tract. At this point, you’ll probably have a difficult time eating large meals and will benefit from eating smaller meals that are nutritionally dense and satisfying. This cookbook combines the science of nutrition with the art of cooking to give you the necessary tools to cook your way through a healthy and fulfilling pregnancy. It includes a wide variety of recipes intended to appeal to the novice or the seasoned chef. Not too confident in the kitchen? Many of the dishes in this book are easy to prepare and can be made in the same amount of time it would take to get food delivered to your door. One of the best ways to follow a nutritious pregnancy diet is to cook at home. When you make your own meals, you can control the ingredients as well as the cooking techniques. Cooking at home also creates lasting memories and brings families together. Getting into the habit now will set a good example for your baby and will instill healthy eating habits from an early age.Drawing on my background as a physician, I’ve included information about the amazing physical changes your body goes through during pregnancy—some desirable and some not so desirable. This book also will provide you with the most important nutrition facts—the nuts and bolts about what you should be eating in pregnancy to nourish both you and your growing baby. As a chef, I wanted to be sure to provide a variety of delicious, nutritious recipes to suit a wide range of tastes. Your diet should be exciting and satisfying in pregnancy, so don’t be afraid to try new recipes and explore new flavors. Studies show that what you eat in pregnancy actually influences your baby’s tastes, so start developing your little foodie’s palate now! There’s something for everyone in this book, including quick and easy meals, slow cooker dishes, freezer-friendly meals and plenty of vegetarian options. There are milder dishes for the days when you’re feeling a little queasy, and full-flavored dishes for the days when you’re loving food. As a mom, I know how busy life can be, especially in the months after the baby is born. So I’ve also included lots of practical tips about how to plan your meals and stock your kitchen. With the right tools and ingredients, you’ll always be prepared to make a delicious, healthy meal even when you’re pressed for time. Hopefully this book will be one you’ll refer to for recipes long after your little bundle of joy arrives.—Excerpt from the Introduction by Dr. Sonali Ruder

The search for rest is one the author was forced upon through chronic illness and the discovery that Christ has made us free not to have to be successful or moral. He has made us free to be.

By Linda Bradshaw I am one of the VERY lucky people to have been one of the first to have read this AMAZING book at Pastor Petes "It Is Finished" retreat and I can tell you that Peter-John Courson has been especially anointed by the Lord to teach His message of Grace. Pure and simple. This book impacted my life in a fresh new way....read it yourself and you WILL find rest for your soul!!

By kurt bennett Why Courson wrote the book: The first sentence of the book reads: "When I was twenty years old I lost my life." Peter goes on to describe how, when he was twenty years old, he contracted malaria while on a mission trip to Vanuatu. That bout of malaria somehow compromised his immune system in such a way that he developed Crohn's disease. Crohn's comes in varying degrees of intensity but Peter's Crohn's has been particularly diabolical. He's been forty pounds underweight and then forty pounds overweight within a just few months. He's had a section of his intestine removed. He's spent August afternoons inside his car with the heat on its highest setting just to keep warm. (Courson)So yes, he did lose his life, the life of health he had before that mosquito-borne disease entered his system. He's waged a war against Crohn's for the better part of two decades. As a result he's fatigued. And along with that fatigue a question came to Peter. And it's a question that comes to every one of us.The question is, "Am I doing enough?"If you've ever asked yourself that question, if you ever lay awake at night wondering if you're doing enough, as a mom, or as a dad, or at work, or, in the eyes of God Himself, then this book is for you.7 Stops: Peter takes us on a journey through scripture exploring seven places where we learn about "God's Finished work of the Cross," and how that helps us to live life from a place of rest. Courson writes, "This mission to justify ourselves through what we do and who we are will inevitably become a matter of comparison and, a universal beauty pageant of sorts." He points out how the world we live in is all about proving oneself. But Jesus didn't live that way. When the Devil tempted him to make bread from stones, Jesus refused. However, later we see Jesus create bread supernaturally to feed the five thousand. But not to prove himself in anyway, his reason was to meet the need of the people. Every time we see anyone ask Jesus for a sign, or to jump through one hoop or another to prove himself, Jesus declines. (Courson)Courson writes, "The Gospel preaches that there is nothing left for you to prove! The sign that Jesus gave for validation of both His and, as a result ours, was His rising from the dead." And of course that was the only sign.Paradoxically, a focus on the Finished work of the Cross results in more fruit and more work produced than if we focus on the work itself. "By focusing on the Finished work of the Cross, we become more like Jesus by surprise. It is holiness by accident, in a certain sense." (Courson)We see examples of God's grace, God's rest, and God's finished work throughout the book. Among these seven stops we see the Finished work on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, inside Noah's ark, at the Lord's table, and in heaven. The cult of busy-ness: Courson's book is the answer to the cult of busy-ness that so many of us get sucked into today. Focusing and resting in the "Finished work of the Cross gets us off the treadmill of trying to make our own name and forge our own identity" in our own energy. This book resonated strongly with me because for too long I was chronically overcommitted and overscheduled, trying to prove myself, trying to do enough. But it was never enough.Read this book if you've ever struggled with the internal feeling that you're not doing enough. Read this book if you're like me, and you're fighting that "Am I doing enough?" battle within your mind and heart. If you're fighting that battle, It Is Finished provides 7 stops where you can find rest in Jesus.Matthew 11:29

This cookbook has a wonderful layout and bright, colorful photos of the food.I've read through the whole book and I appreciate the variety in foods as well as ease of preparation. The longest recipe has 8 simple steps, with the vast majority of recipes having 4-5. There are a handful that even have just 2 steps! This would be a fantastic first cookbook for a child who is curious about what their parents do in the kitchen. Special kid-friendly steps are highlighted so adult and child can prepare a meal together.I have a toddler who will eat anything, but I see this cookbook possibly helping those children who are a bit pickier. There are no super fancy recipes or offensive ingredients. All the ingredients are ones most families keep in their pantry or are easily accessible at any grocery store. No weird ingredients that are only found in specialty stores!I gave this cookbook 5 stars because I very much appreciate when cookbook authors make note of good alternatives for a recipe, such as substituting one fruit for another. I feel like I'm getting twice the amount of recipes and I get more ideas on how to change up a recipe just slightly.

I bought this for my almost 4 year old who LOVES Elmo. The book is like a story with recipes. It will provide you with many options for breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks! Everything is pretty simple and most recipes have simple ingredients that you may already have in the fridge or pantry. Also, the book encourages the child to help participate in the cooking process. Letting my toddler help has made him want to try new food. This may be the case since he was the one who 'made' the meal. Either way I love this book!

Ingredients list is written in order of usage so you can concentrate on helping your little helper help! Instructions are written in a clear way, easily grouped so when in action, it's done simply. End products are appealing to eat for the average toddler. Great tips on cooking with little ones. Healthy foods representing alphabet. Highly recommended. My only complaint is that the paper is a bit thin. The cover and ring binding are great, though.

From the Author It was such a joy writing Crossing Boarders.  Although it is not solely about horses, I wanted to share a bit of my passion through the unique characters and their not-far-from-the-truth personalities.  I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I enjoyed writing about Dana and her adventures.

About the Author Debra Sue Brice has been writing since she was a little girl.  Besides writing, she enjoys spending most of her time with her two horses and hanging out with her family.

Fun and informative By KB If you have read and enjoyed A Spool of Blue Thread and are a fan of quizzes, or if you like Anne Tyler's work and are interested to know more about her then this fun little book could be just the thing for you. It is separated into three sections: Section 1 tests your knowledge and understanding of the book with 10 questions about the setting, plot and characters. Section 2 is about the author and again has 10 questions about her life and works. The third section digs a bit deeper and unless you're a lucky guesser, you'll only really know the answers to these 10 questions if you truly are an avid fan, but for everyone else you will learn some interesting facts and trivia about the author, the book and how it has been received.
