The windows of the Beckett Café were frosted, so he couldn't see if it had closed for the night. As hungry as he was, he was far more interested in finding a bed. Highway patrol troopers had closed the roads, and he couldn't even get back to the tiny airport to sleep on a cold hangar floor or inside his plane. He glanced at the cab's clock: a few minutes past ten. He felt as if it should be around 1:00 a.m.The taxi left the two blocks of one-story buildings, shops and neon behind as the main street of Beckett, Texas, was swallowed in a white world of howling wind and blowing snow. In spite of the warmth of the cab, Josh shivered. He pulled his jacket collar up while he peered outside at the uninviting storm. In minutes he spotted a sign swinging in the wind, a spotlight on the ground throwing a strong beam over the announcement of the Donovan Bed and Breakfast Inn. Glumly he stared at the bright red No Vacancy part of the sign.Even wind-whipped snow could not hide the three-story Victorian-style house that loomed into view. A light glowed over the wraparound porch. Dark shutters flanked the wide windows spilling warm yellow light outside into the stormy night. The driver pulled to the curb."Ask for Abby Donovan. She runs the place," the driver said."Will do. I'll be right back.""I'll wait. Abby's a nice person. I don't think she'll turn you out in the cold. You'll see."Placing a broad-brimmed Stetson on his head, Josh stepped out of the warmth of the cab into the driving wind and streaming snow. Holding his hat against the battering wind, he trudged to the house to ring the bell. Through a window he could see a big living room with people inside and an inviting roaring fire in the fireplace. When the door swung open, he momentarily forgot why he was there. A slender woman with huge, thickly lashed cornflower-blue eyes faced him. She wore a powder-blue sweater and jeans. He forgot the time, the howling storm and even his plight. Too captivated by eyes that widened and held him, Josh stood immobilized and silent until he realized how he stared at her."Abby Donovan?" His voice was husky, and he still was lost in her gaze. She blinked as if as captured as he had been. "I'm Abby.""I'm Josh Calhoun. I flew in to see someone about buying a horse, and then I couldn't get back to the airport. I was told to see you about a place to stay. I know you have a No Vacancy sign out, but at this point, I'm willing to sleep on the floor just to get in out of this blizzard.""I'm so sorry, but we're overbooked. I already have people sleeping on the floor.""My cabdriver can't get back to the airport. They've closed the roads.""I'm sorry, but even the overflow space is taken here. I've let two people come in tonight who will sleep on sofas, and we have two on pallets on the floor. That's the most I can possibly accommodate. I have eighteen adults in rooms, plus nine children. Four other people live here at least part of the time. I don't have extra blankets or pillows now—""I stopped and bought blankets and a pillow at the only store open in this town just as they closed. I'm desperate.""Oh, my," she said, staring at him with a slight frown. Her rosy lips were full, enticing. He tried to focus on getting a bed for the night and stop thinking about the possibility of kissing her. He couldn't recall ever having this type of reaction to a total stranger, much less under his present circumstances. His gaze roamed over her, and he was even more surprised by his attraction to her, because her sandy-blond hair was caught up behind her head in a ponytail, giving her a plain look that shouldn't have done anything to his pulse. All he had to do was gaze into her eyes, though, and a physical response strummed in him. Her riveting blue eyes were unique."Abby, I'm desperate. I have bedding. I can sit in a chair. My cabdriver has little kids and wants to get home to them. Just any corner will do. Even a kitchen floor, and I'll get out of your way in the morning. I'll pay you double what you charge for a room."Her frown deepened. "Come in while we talk. The air is cold.""Yes, it is," he said as he stepped inside a wide hallway dominated by winding stairs to the second floor. Warmth enveloped him, and his spirits lifted a fraction. A floor mat was close, and he stamped his booted feet. "I can provide payment in advance, an extra fee—whatever you would like. I can't tell you how much I would appreciate this. I really am desperate. I was up until three last night working on a business deal in Arizona and flew in here today on the way home to see about the horse. I didn't have dinner. I'm tired and cold. I can't get home. It's a miserable night and even more miserable without a place to stay. What can I do to help if I stay here? Order in breakfast for everyone?"Shaking her head, her frown vanished. "There's nowhere in Beckett you could order breakfast. I cook, and it'll be better than trying to order in at this time of night or in the morning. If this snow doesn't stop, no restaurants will be open.""I'm sure you're right. You're highly praised in town, and I also heard you're softhearted, generous, kind—""Stop," she said, a faint smile appearing. "Tell me more about yourself. We're going to be in close quarters, more so than if you just called at an ordinary time and checked in for a room."Josh was amused by being asked to give a reference, because he was well-known in Texas. "I'm Josh Calhoun from Verity, Texas, and I own a business, Cal-houn Hotels."Her gaze swept over him from his wide-brimmed Stetson to his hand-tooled boots. "You're buying a horse, but you're in the hotel business?""I'm a rancher, too. The hotel headquarters are in Dallas, where I have another home, so you can check that out easily by calling the hotel's front desk. The sheriff of Verity can tell you about me because we've known each other all our lives," Josh said as he withdrew his wallet and flipped it open to show her his driver's license and fishing license. He was turning to the next license when she placed her fingers over his.The contact sizzled, startling him and causing him to look up. She had stepped closer, and he could detect an old-fashioned lilac perfume. Again, he was caught and held by her stare. She shook her head slightly. "You don't have to show more identification," she said, stepping away. "All right, you can stay tonight. You can sleep on the sofa in my suite, but I will not share my bathroom, so you'll have to go across the hall to a central one.""That sounds like paradise," he said, smiling at her. "Thanks, Abby. This means a lot to me, because it's a deplorable night." He wondered if he could talk her into going to dinner with him some night. The cold and relief of acquiring a room must have affected his judgment, because she definitely didn't look like his type of woman. He didn't know her, either, and he didn't ask strangers to go out with him. "I'll get my bedding and pay the cabbie. I'll be back in a minute.""The front door will be unlocked. I'll lock it after you're back inside."He stepped closer to her. "You're not going to regret this."She blinked as if startled. "I certainly hope I don't," she replied breathlessly. He turned and left, pulling the door closed behind him. Holding his hat squarely on his head again, he sprinted to the taxi and climbed inside. "I got the room. Thanks for the ride," he said, drawing bills out of his wallet. "Thanks for getting me back into town after seeing about the horse. And thanks for your encouragement and for stopping so I could buy a pillow and blanket.""Glad you found a place. Sorry I couldn't help more, but with the kids plus my in-laws staying, my two-bedroom duplex is not the best place, although you could have come if nothing else had turned up. Good luck to you. When the roads open and you're ready to go back to the airport, call—you have my card. I'll come get you.""Thanks, Benny," Josh said, glancing at the man's identification card attached to the visor, knowing he would have stayed anywhere he could find before imposing on the cabbie and his family with four little ones plus in-laws in a tiny place. "I won't forget all you've done." Josh tucked an extra-large tip in with the other bills he gave the cabdriver."Mister, you made a mistake," the driver said, seeing how much money he had in his hand."No, I didn't. That's a thank-you. Take care of yourself and your family," Josh said. The man smiled. "Thanks. That's a generous tip."Josh started to step outside but stopped and looked back. "Does Ms. Donovan have a husband who helps her run the inn?""No. She's single—from a big family. Her grandmother used to run the place. Now Abby does, and Grandma Donovan lives up on the top floor with some other elderly relatives or over at her daughter's house, which is next door.""I see," Josh said, deciding the town was small enough that everyone knew everyone else. "Thanks again." He stepped out into the snow to dash back to the inn.Abby appeared instantly to lock the front door and switch off the porch light. Wind whistled and howled around the house."I'll show you where to put your things," she said, walking down the hall and turning as it branched off. "This is my suite." She stepped into a room and turned on a ceiling light. The room had a polished oak floor with a hand-woven area rug, antique mahogany furniture and bookshelves filled with books and family pictures. Green plants gave it an old-fashioned, cozy appearance that made him think of his grandparents' house. A stone fireplace had a smoldering fire with a screen in front of it."I started the fire a while ago so my room would be warm after I told everyone good-night," she said. "Most of the guests are in the big living room, and they go to their own rooms about eleven, when I shut everything down. Tonight is a little different because no one can get up and leave in the morning, so I think some will watch a movie. Suit yourself about what you do. You can leave your things and join us, or if you prefer, you can stay in here. There is a door from my bedroom into the hall, so I can come and go that way and not disturb you. You'll have this room to yourself. As soon as I get towels for you and get you registered, I'll go join them again.""I'll go with you," he said, placing his pillow and blanket on the sofa before shedding his coat. He wore a thick brown sweater over a white dress shirt, jeans and boots and was glad he had dressed warmly."You'll be too long for that old-fashioned sofa. Would you rather sleep on the floor?""I'll be fine. Just to have a roof over my head is paradise. I don't mind my feet hanging off the sofa," he said, smiling at her. Once again he received a riveting look that momentarily immobilized him until she turned away."I'll get your towels," she said and left. He watched her cross the hall and disappear into a room. She returned to hand him clean towels and washcloths."If you'll come with me, you can register."Josh followed her to the front desk of polished dark wood with scratches from what must have been years of use. He glanced around at the decorative staircase rails. "This place looks Victorian.""It is. It's been in my family for five generations now." She turned a ledger toward him. "Please sign your name. I'll need a credit card. Since you'll be on the sofa, I'll just charge you a discounted rate. Here are the rates and details about staying here," she added, handing a paper to him. "And here's a map of the inn and a map of the town of Beckett, although you won't be leaving tomorrow, because we're supposed to get a lot more snow and possibly sleet.""No, I'm stuck probably through tomorrow at least.""Everything has shut down—highways, roads and businesses will be closed tomorrow. They've already had the announcements on television and said schools will be closed Monday." She reached under the desk and produced a small flashlight. "We heard on the radio that half the town is without power because of ice on electric lines. I'm giving all the guests flashlights. This is an old house, and candles are dangerous.""Thanks." Pocketing the flashlight, Josh barely glanced at the papers she handed him as he studied her instead. Her smooth, flawless skin and rosy cheeks added to her appeal. What was it about her that fueled this tingling awareness of her? It wasn't her personality, because he barely knew her and had spoken with her only briefly. Her fuzzy sweater came to her thighs and hid her figure, so that wasn't the electrifying draw. She was a nice person who was being helpful. That should be all. Instead, he had a scalding awareness of her that made him think about asking her out, fantasize about dancing with her and holding her, and wonder what it would be like to kiss her and make love with her. She was providing shelter and comfort; maybe it was his long hours of work over the past few days and now the storm that caused his reaction to her. He had slept little for over a week. When she turned the register around, she read what he had signed. "This gives a Dallas address. Do you consider Dallas home instead of Verity?""I live and work in Dallas most of the time. I also have a ranch in west Texas. The closest town is Verity," he replied. She nodded as she gathered more papers to hand to him."So you're a hobby rancher," she said."Yes, at least for now. Someday I'll move to the ranch and do that full-time and let someone else run the hotel business for me. I go to the ranch when I get a chance, but that rarely happens," he admitted, thinking there weren't many people who knew he missed ranching and wondering why he was telling a stranger."Here's the schedule for tomorrow," she said. "Normally breakfast runs from seven-thirty until 9:00 a.m. Since no one can get out tomorrow, we'll start at 8:00 a.m. and go until nine-thirty.""Thanks. The breakfast time is fine.""I'll be going back to join the others now unless you have anything else you want to ask me about," she said, looking up, those wide eyes capturing his full attention again."Thanks, no. I'll follow you.""We've been singing. I play the piano or leave it to a guest."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good book By S. Frank Sweet story. When Josh is caught in a freak blizzard he takes refuge in a local B&B. The inn is full, but Abby makes room for him in her own set of rooms. There's something about her that draws him in and he can't figure out what it is. Attraction, yes, but it's more than that. Over the next couple days, Josh hangs with Abby, helping around the inn and just spending time with her. Once the roads are clear, he doesn't want to say goodbye.Abby is wary of Josh at the beginning. He's wealthy and used to getting what he wants. He's also handsome and charming, which adds to her wariness. Her father had also been a handsome, charming man who traveled a lot for business, and ended up walking out on his family, so she doesn't trust that type of man.I loved seeing them get to know each other. Josh is a nice guy at heart. He sees how busy Abby is with the inn overflowing and steps in to help. He shovels, carries wood, washes dishes, all kinds of things that surprise her. She doesn't expect someone so wealthy to know how to do these things, much less actually want to do them. They spend a lot of time together doing things around the inn and talking while they do it. Abby sees the huge differences in their lifestyles and knows that there's no way there would ever be a future between them. She's a homebody, never been out of Texas, devoted to her family. She's a great listener, and hears the longing in Josh's voice when he talks about how his business keeps him from spending the time he wants to on his ranch. She encourages him to not waste his life on doing what he doesn't want to do.Josh was attracted to Abby, but listened when she told him that she wouldn't sleep with him. The entire time he's at the inn, he can't get enough of being with her, even without the prospect of sex. He doesn't understand why he's so taken with her, as she's nothing like the women he usually dates. He assumes that the fascination will wear off quickly, but it doesn't. When he learns that she's never been out of Texas, he's suddenly determined to take her to New York with him and show her a different side of life.I loved the trip and the enjoyment they both got from it. I really liked the way that Josh did everything he could to make sure Abby had a good time. He also discovered that the fascination still wasn't fading, which really confused him. Abby was equally determined to enjoy every minute, as she knew that it would be her only time with him. She admitted to herself that she has fallen in love with him, but feels that love isn't enough when the differences are so great. The added days at his ranch show her another side of him that only makes her feelings even stronger. At the end of the trip, Josh doesn't want it to end, but makes a proposition that angers Abby. She feels it shows that he really doesn't know her after all. She goes back to her life at the inn, determined to try to forget him, but can't. However, she can't go on the way they were, so she avoids his phone calls. Meanwhile, Josh is miserable. He can't stop thinking about Abby. He knows he messed up, but doesn't know what to do about it. It takes dinner out with an old friend, who shows Josh what his problem really is. Now all he has to do is convince Abby that they can have it all. I loved seeing the way that Josh approached figuring out just how to do it, and the solution he came up with was perfect. I also liked that Abby was able, with the help of her mom, to realize that Josh and her dad were two different types of people, let go of her fears and allow herself to be happy.

By ChickeyAZ From the very first chapter, one of the main characters makes a statement that told me everything I needed to know about the plot. However, that didn't make one bit of difference for me. I enjoyed every dark delicious minute. I simply could not put it down. Fantastic thrill ride with a romantic ending! These characters are your friends and loved ones. You care for them, cry for them, and cheer them on. Edge of your seat suspense!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More than a "cozy" mystery By Bonnie Engstrom Hickey's plots are always fun. Although her books are called cozies, this one is more than cozy. That statement is meant positively. Unfortunately, since I read it on Kindle, and I'm not good at going back to it there, I can't remember character names. I loved the dog, though. I just remember how much fun it was to read, and how I could hardly put it down. I highly recommend Cynthia Hickey's books.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another great book By Pat Peregrin Stormi and family set off to save Cherokee and Matt. Yes, I said Matt. Another great Nosy Neighbor mystery. While I said no violence. There was some but it is always brief and mostly off in the background. Sexual content is more innuendo than anything. This was a fast paced book and I really enjoyed it. While I figured out who the big boss was before Stormi did, I did not have all the distractions she did. Oh by the way, the writer may have found a better proofreader but she is not there yet. Getting better though.....

Ideal for introducing basic shapes to preschoolers, containing 2 books - one geared to appeal to boys and one to appeal to girls By Bookworm Gang I love the vibrant and colourful Cutes family illustrations by Vincent Noot, and in this little book about shapes they are used to introduce little ones to basic shape types. Ideal for preschoolers, the book introduces a shape, then gets the kids to look for that shape in the following pictures.Although each is only short, this book really includes 2 different books - one introducing the shapes using girl characters, and pictures with colours and subjects geared more to appeal to girls, then a 2nd book introducing the shapes using boy characters, with pictures geared more to appeal to boys. So great for reinforcing the learning experience, while allowing both girls and boys to choose their preferred pictures to study.

This is a great book for preschoolers. As parents help them read, they can look at the pictures and find the hidden shapes. The learning is an essential part to children's school work and making it fun means that they will learn without knowing that they are. The author did a great job with the fun pictures of the kids in the book and in the hidden shapes that kids are going to love looking for.

On the next page, you have a picture with the shape to find. It looks like it would be prettier easy for toddlers to figure out. My dogs and I enjoyed finding the shapes. One extra note, I liked that the book didn't have a "babyish" like most shape books do. Great job, Vincent and Celestial!

Captain Color and the Color Factory!

The world was once a dull place without color. Everything was black and white and boring!!! One day Mrs. Luminosity Sinclair decided to use magic and joy to create the COLOR FACTORY! It pumped beautiful and vibrant colors into the world.

The world now had color, but some did not like this change. The Xenophobe Society (a group of old men that despised change) decided to take action to prevent it. They created evil robots to destroy the Color Factory.

Can Captain Color prevent their attack and save the Color Factory? Read the book to find out!

By Mindy I read this book as a bedtime story to my 3 year old son and we loved it so much I made a collection on my kindle app titled Arnie Lightning. Someone else commented about the pictures needing work but I disagree. I loved how a picture was included with each page on the kindle app. Many of the longer Ebooks are not organized as well as this one. I also loved the fact that I didn't find any grammatical errors. You wouldn't believe how many errors are packed in other children's stories.

It's got some very beautiful illustrations as well. I lived at this time too whenI was in jr. high my dad brought home our first black and white TV. I recommend this especially for a great short bedtime story for the very young to us older ones. And for these reasons here this is why I am giving it five stars. Super work Arnie! By Angela

A mixture of photographs and illustrations complement the text well. This would be a helpful resource for student research projects, or a good leveled reader for middle-elementary nonfiction lovers. Although it's not particularly graphic, very young children may find the scene where the hammerhead eats the stingray and the one where a stingray stings a swimmer a little scary.

Award-winning author Felicia Mason introduces us to a respectable Southern family turned upside-down by grief…and a hilarious and sometimes undignified search for a huge inheritance…   After a lifetime spent scrubbing and mending for others, Ana Mae Futrell has passed away. Her siblings have reluctantly returned to their North Carolina hometown to bury the older sister they never really bothered to know. For instance, they didn’t know she’d won big on a lottery ticket. Or that she had a son. But back to the money—Ana Mae’s millions will go only to the person who can interpret the clues she’s left behind in a quilt. If they all fail, the fortune goes to Ana Mae’s cats—and a Reverend with whom she shared a “special” relationship…   Ana Mae’s two sisters and brother hadn’t really thought about her in years, but now she’s all they can think about. And as the race to win begins, everyone finds there’s more to gain than money. Because they’re each going to learn a little something about Ana Mae—and a whole lot more about themselves…    “Fabulous family drama.” —Midwest Book Review   “Mason presents a family in transition whom all can identify with. Throw in a hidden fortune and a good dose of humor, and readers will laugh through their tears.” —RT Book Reviews

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. fabulous family drama By A Customer Hidden RichesFelicia MasonKensington, Jan 28 2014, $15.00ISBN: 9780758205735Employed as a domestic and known for her quality quilts (and fried chicken) Ana Mae Futrell recently died from an aneurism while cleaning a toilet. The Ahoskie Times & Union Report mentions in the obit that she is survived by a son Howard who neither the townsfolk nor her family knew existed. Her three younger siblings (Mary Josephine Coston of Las Vegas, Marguerite Delcine Foster of Maryland and Dr. Clayton Futrell of San Francisco) and their significant others arrive in their hometown of Drapersville, North Carolina for the funeral.Ana Mae's will surprisingly include a lot of money which she initially had won at the lottery but immensely grew with sound investments. It also stipulates her siblings and their mates, her pastor Reverend Toussaint and her BFF Rosalee search for the meaning of a quilt she left behind.Hidden Riches is an engaging contemporary as the deceased prayed when she was alive that one day she succeeds in her mission. Character driven by a fully developed cast and containing a stunning twist that explains much of the dysfunction, readers will appreciate Felicia Mason's fabulous family drama.Harriet Klausner

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Terrific story of families and love By LeahDee “Hidden Riches” is the story of three adult siblings who travel to their (fictional) hometown of Drapersville, NC, for the funeral of their older sister. While Ana Mae had remained a home-town girl, working menial jobs, going to church and living her simple country life, the three had fled the area years earlier to make lives for themselves in bigger, more exciting, locales. Grudgingly, they return home for the funeral, dragging their problems with them.Delcine, the oldest, arrives as Marguerite, a name befitting the glamorous lifestyle she’s built in the D.C. suburbs with her powerful husband Winslow, a high-ranking government official. Despite their trappings of wealth, the two are having financial problems, and the trip south couldn’t come at a worse time. For middle child JoJo, who works as an exotic dancer on the Las Vegas strip, the homecoming shines a spotlight on her unhappiness with husband Lester who wastes no time in demonstrating his lack of grace, or common sense. The baby of the family, Clayton, possibly has the most at stake with the trip home. He must relive the shame of homosexuality he’d shed when he escaped Drapersville years before and settled in San Francisco where’s he’s built a prosperous career as a doctor. He’s also built a loving family with his loyal partner Archer, a successful attorney. Lately there have been rumblings of discontent between them, and this time together could make or break their relationship.Expecting a quick in-and-out trip to lay their older sister to rest, they quickly discover Ana Mae had other plans. She might have spent her life simply, but not meagerly. She’s been active with her church family, and she even dipped her toes into some financial investments. When the siblings discover that Ana Mae had money—big money—they start jockeying for position to make a claim. But Ana Mae hasn’t made it easy. A skilled quilter, she devised a test for her family in the form of clues embedded in her life quilt. In order to solve the puzzle, and claim the money, the siblings must learn who Ana Mae really was. From the first meeting with the attorney, the siblings’ lives, and their impressions of their deceased older sister, are turned upside down. The book is a fast read but rich in emotion. Mason draws her characters, including a secondary cast of friends and townspeople, with flaws but with sympathy, skillfully pulling the reader into the everyday life of this small southern town.Terrific book.(I received this book as an ARC for review.)

If you've ever wondered why small-town life is intoxicating yet stifling, pick up this gem of a book.Ana Mae Futrell is the sibling who stayed behind in North Carolina as the others sought wealth in larger cities. Ana Mae's sudden death brings her sisters and brother home again. Mary, Marguerite, and Clayton return to pay respects to their underachieving sister--a domestic--and soon discover her business savvy and a possible inheritance. Shattered is the myth that their toilet-cleaning, quilt-making sister with no love life of which to speak was a dull bore; instead, the siblings learn of Ana Mae's strengths through all the hobbies she enjoyed: gardening, quilting, and cooking. (Yes, Ana Mae, not Annie Mae!)I laughed, cried, and thought about these characters long after I closed the last page. This is my first Felicia Mason read, but it won't be my last. What an excellent novel!

"Mesmeric, sensuous ... [Smith] deftly allows us to discern grubbing desires, and, in doing so, our own prejudices. Epiphanies tend to fly past the characters themselves, but they hit us head-on." —Lisa Moore, The Walrus

"Smith, a long-time Globe and Mail columnist, is a gifted anthropologist of the urbane. Those gifts are on full display throughout Confidence." —The Globe and Mail

"[Confidence] may to the uninitiated seem otherworldly in its lasciviousness; to the initiated, it seems merely accurate."—Rebecca Tucker, The National Post

"Darkly hilarious … Russell Smith continues his assault on what he sees as the tame sensibility of Canadian literary fiction … Confidence finds Smith at the top of his game."—Morley Walker, The Winnipeg Free Press

“Thankfully, Russell Smith has no interest in the prevailing wheat germ ethos of CanLit. Here, finally, is fiction we can swallow for taste, not nutrition … Here, finally, is a Canadian fiction writer who admits that humans, even Canadians, have sex hard-wired into the DNA …”—The Toronto Star

“We know gentrification, prescription drugs, absorption in handheld screens and the psychic drain of continually comparing ourselves with others, and it does us good to see these phenomena so deftly satirized … but what gives Confidence its emotional power is the isolation of the characters amid all their connectivity. A sad and funny and vivid portrait [of contemporary life] that we hope isn’t as true as we know it is.”—The Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Russell Smith’s brilliant new short story collection, Confidence, makes Toronto people on the prowl look like withered malign elves out to do harm. It’s an extraordinary book, but imagine its eight stories turn into 37 million, withdrawing silently like a wave and then driving towards us with spare room couches, legal bills, slaps, bruises, For Sale signs and shattered windshields in a tsunami of hurt and sorrow."—Heather Mallick, The Toronto Star

"In the world of these stories, love is a game, secrets pile up, needs go unmet, compromises and negotiations are constantly being made … [Yet the final pieces] soften the book’s unflinching tone and deliver, finally, emotional resonance by hinting at vulnerable humanity and the truest, simplest desires behind the exhaustive chase of pleasure."—Carla Gillis, Quill & Quire

"Smith...demonstrates his singular ability to write about shallow people and still make a deep impact. This is the writer whose craft made the biggest leap this year.”—NOW (NNNN)

“When I pick up a book by Russell Smith I’ve come to expect to read about sex, and ambition, and a city that can be exciting and superficial, and glitters with the promise that it doesn’t always deliver. There is all that in his new collection of short stories.” —Shelagh Rogers, CBC Radio One's The Next Chapter

“Darkly funny, Confidence skewers modern relationships with just enough hope and romance left at the bottom of Pandora's box to remind us why we suffer through the tribulations of love…This is not the stodgy CanLit you were assigned in school – Russell Smith's writing is sharp and sultry …” —W Dish

“It’s a delicious darkness that pervades Russell Smith’s latest short store collection, Confidence… Unflinchingly honest reading.” —THIS Magazine

“[Confidence] is a satirical portrait of Toronto’s hip (or not-so-cool) urbanites, and his targets will probably be recognizable to most readers living in Canada’s wonderlands, our diverse cities. You don’t have to own a condo in Hogtown to appreciate the author’s ability to observe and then poke fun at the pampered and privileged, these trend-loving, squash-playing, blog-writing, vegan-living prima donnas.” —The Chronicle Herald

Praise for Russell Smith

"Smith writes some of the most luminous prose in Canadian fiction … He mines and refines the best of what has come before on the way to making it his own. Also, Smith is entirely credible when writing female characters … One catches quiet echoes of Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf." —The Montreal Gazette

“[Russell Smith is] something of a literary heir to Margaret Atwood."—The Toronto Star

From the Back Cover In Russell Smith?s darkly brilliant new collection of short stories Confidence, the reader will be introduced to ecstasy-taking PhD students; financial traders desperate for husbands; owners of failing sex stores; violent and unremovable tenants; aggressive raccoons; seedy massage parlours; experimental filmmakers who record every second of their day; wives who blog insults directed at their husbands. There are cheating husbands. There are private clubs, crowded restaurants, psychiatric wards. Every character has a secret of some kind.

About the Author Russell Smith is one of Canada’s funniest and nastiest writers. His previous novels, including How Insensitive and Girl Crazy, are records of urban frenzy and exciting underworlds. He writes a provocative weekly column on the arts in the national Globe and Mail, and teaches in the MFA program at the University of Guelph. He hates folk music.

It describes overheard conversations in Toronto restaurants. People portrayed seem vapid, empty and without convictions. Maybe that is who we've become. Kind of scary.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Michael Vey 4 My best friend, Ostin Liss, told me that there is an ancient Chinese curse that says: MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES My name is Michael Vey, and I’m definitely living in interesting times. Just a year ago that wasn’t true. In fact, my life was about as exciting as one of Ostin’s clogging recitals. I was just an average, no-name freshman at Meridian High School in Meridian, Idaho—a small town where the only thing above average is the cow-to-human ratio. Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of Meridian, Idaho. Neither has anyone else. I lived with my mother, who worked as a checker at the grocery store, in a tiny apartment with eggshell-white walls and green shag carpet. I walked to school every day; avoided bullies, the principal, most types of math, and organized sports; and played video games with my best (and only) friend, Ostin, six out of seven days of the week. And I watched Shark Week twice a year. That pretty much summed up my life. I suppose the only thing vaguely interesting about me was my Tourette’s syndrome, which isn’t really that interesting because I don’t do any of the fascinating things that some people with Tourette’s do, like shout out swear words in public or make animal noises. I mostly just blink or gulp a lot. I know, boring. Actually, what I just said about Tourette’s being the only interesting thing about me isn’t really true. There’s something about me that has always been very interesting—I’m just not allowed to tell anyone. I’m electric. Which is what’s led to my new and very interesting life. For those keeping score, in the last year I’ve done the following: • Made friends with a group of kids with electric powers like mine. • Been locked up in a cell and tortured. • Shut down a private school. • Scored a really hot girlfriend. (Still can’t believe that one.) • Flown to Peru and rescued my mother. • Been tied up and almost fed to rats. • Blown up a major power plant. • Made Peru’s list of most wanted criminals. • Been chased through the jungle by helicopters with flamethrowers. • Lived with the Amacarra tribe in the Amazon jungle. • Attacked the Peruvian army and rescued my friends before they could be executed for terrorism. • Blew up the Ampere, a billion-dollar superyacht, before the Elgen could take over and enslave the entire island nation of Tuvalu (which, like Meridian, Idaho, you’ve also never heard of). Now we’re preparing to fly to Taiwan to rescue a nine-year-old Chinese girl from the Taiwanese army and a group of Elgen superninjas called the Lung Li. I have a feeling things are about to get a whole lot more interesting.

By Zazzy Once again the energy soars to full on the voltage meter in the 4th installment of Richard Paul Evans capitvating series Michael Vey 4: Hunt for Jade Dragon.Michael Vey and his friends have returned to the states. The trauma and triumph of Peru have taken their toll on all of them. Some have come back to happy reunions while others still mourn what they have lost. The group is informed about their next mission: to save the one called Jade Dragon. She holds valuable information and if it falls in the wrong hands could be globally catastrophic. The girl is an autistic savant with an incredible IQ. She is also deaf and mute which makes retrieving the information next to impossible. Or is it? The Electroclan must travel to Taiwan, and much to their dismay, have to bring along a surprising old acquaintance. Dr. Hatch and The Elgen have become more formidable than anyone could have imagined. Tensions are at all-time high as these teens face their toughest challenge yet.Kids and adults will enjoy the spark filled action in this book. It is well written and the attention to details is amazing. One of the things I really appreciate about this series is that it uses the right amount of challenging vocabulary and engaging geography to keep readers of any age riveted. The positive role models are refreshing and serve to show that anyone can be a hero by the choices they make. I totally recommend this book and the entire series. Well done RPE! Zappy Reading!!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great story By Patricia B. You know...I read book one and liked it but felt it was often too wordy and that sometimes the Christian conversation went on and on. Despite that, I had really liked the characters Cassie and Jake and I wanted to see where their story went so I bought this book. Consequently, I came at this with somewhat low expectations. The problems of book one were not evident here at all. This story was really great--lots of action, suspense and romance. Ah, romance. :). The writing and story just flowed so well. I can heartily recommend this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stunning Suspense! By Rebecca Maney An absolutely stunning suspense, with no weaknesses and many, many strengths!FBI Special Agents Jake Tucker and Cass McKenna have a unique partnership; together they have lived through tremendous loss and have survived extreme circumstances; both professionally and personally. When assigned to solve a shooting incident involving a fellow federal agent, Jake and Cass undercover fragile threads of criminal activity which implicate a powerful state senator, who just happens to be married to Jake's ex-wife. Gambling, domestic violence, attempted assaults, custody disputes, drug infested street gangs, and ultimately murder all converge; giving this story the five star rating that it richly deserves.Thankfully, hints of impending romance offer "Battered Justice" a softer edge, but the lasting strength of this book lies in the author's ability to challenge the faith of her characters simultaneous with her readers. Ask yourself; Is there a God? Does He love you? Does he know what is going on with you? Could He save you? Will he? Deep questions which require deep faith and a fathomless dose of humility; especially for a highly trained, physically strong FBI agent. Fortunately or unfortunately, Jake and Cass will need every ounce of God's strength, rather than their own, when the unthinkable happens and Jake's very life and liberty begin to disappear.Enjoy every minute of "Battered Justice" with its brilliant story line and wonderfully developed characters; it's a page turner until the very end!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved Battered Justice By Margot B Linda White has done it again with another great book. So glad I read (and purchased) this. I came to like her characters and really worried about their fates as I read. But I wouldn't look ahead. :) One aspect I really appreciated was her characters' search for faith; they asked good questions often without easy answers. Linda doesn't give easy answers. Also, while I know that "real" FBI agents will use salty language, I have to say I appreciated that Linda didn't have her characters use the harsher language. Another strength was Jake learning how to be a good father to his children while holding down a tough job and facing a trial. Linda is not afraid to tackle tough topics in her books. So, Linda, wonderful work, and I really can't wait to read another.

A Malcolm & Suzanne Rannoch Mystery In the elegant environs of Mayfair, Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch live a seemingly charmed life. Malcolm, a former diplomatic attaché and intelligence agent, is a rising Member of Parliament. Suzanne is fast becoming one of London’s most sought hostesses. But even their closest friends don’t know that the Rannoch’s marriage is still reeling from the revelation that Suzanne was a French spy when she met British agent Malcolm and that she married him to gather information on British plans. Malcolm and Suzanne are hoping for private time to repair their marriage. But their peace is shattered by a late night visit from a Bow Street runner. The powerful Duke of Trenchard has been found murdered in the study of his St. James’s Square house. And Laura Dudley, governess to the Rannoch children, was standing over the dying duke. Malcolm and Suzanne are convinced the woman they trusted with their children is not a killer. To prove Laura’s innocence, they are drawn into an investigation that will test their wits and the fragile truce between them. But whether or not she murdered the Duke of Trenchard, Laura Dudley is certainly not what she seemed. Revelations about her identity cut dangerously close to Suzanne’s own past. Malcolm and Suzanne realize more is at stake than Laura’s life and liberty. The investigation into the Duke of Trenchard’s murder will either prove the resilience of their bond–or snap it in two. "Shimmers like the finest salons in Vienna." —Deborah Crombie "Meticulous, delightful, and full of surprises." —Tasha Alexander "Glittering balls, deadly intrigue, sexual scandals. . .the next best thing to actually being there!"—Lauren Willig "A superb storyteller."—Deanna Raybourn

By phh A disappointment - OK at best - Recommend new readers concentrate on the earlier books. This series is running out of steam, the author devoting pages to discussions of obstacles in relationships for the sake of adding yet another book and more pages, thus avoiding working with the plot. The result consists of pages filled with glances, introspection and hurt feelings with a hurried letter at the end summarizing the solution to the actual crimes. Editing? No attempt to use accurate speech and idioms. Content? A victim was shot to death at the beginning of the book; later on there is a discussion of his being stabbed (which covering more than a page should have caught any editor's attention). Formatting? Kindle version is a disaster: double spacing is for drafts/proofs - not for reading.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another great mystery from Grant. By OLT A nicely convoluted, complex mystery in the Malcolm/Suzanne series, this begins three months after The Berkeley Square Affair (Malcolm & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mysteries Book 7) ended. Malcolm and Suzanne's personal relationship is, of course, still strained after the revelation in the last book that Suzanne has been working as a French spy before and throughout their marriage, unbeknownst to Malcolm, who is still feeling the betrayal, and Suzanne is feeling major guilt. The mystery here begins with the death of the Duke of Trenchard, found murdered in his study. Laura Dudley, the governess for Malcolm and Suzanne's children, is arrested for the crime and so Suzanne and Malcolm, hoping she is innocent, feel the need to work with Bow Street agent Roth to find the real killer. It's quite an involved story with a murder victim so unsympathetic, ruthless, devious and amoral that the list of possible killers is almost endless. All the usual characters are here. Malcolm's family and friends, numerous members of the Upper Ten Thousand, Carfax, Malcolm's spymaster, and O'Roarke, Suzanne's spymaster and Malcolm's biological father. (It's complicated and that info is not a spoiler.) And we have all the trademark sexual intrigues and peccadilloes that Grant's books are known for. You almost need to make a spreadsheet for this one to keep track of who has slept with whom and who has fathered whom.As Malcolm and Suzanne investigate, the can of worms opens up more and more. Spying, past and present political intrigue in England and in India, the Carfax tie-in because he's Trenchard's father-in-law, the years-ago death of Trenchard's eldest son in India, and then to add to the puzzle a second member of Carfax's family is murdered soon after the first murder. What's going on? Is Carfax somehow involved? And who is Laura Dudley really and what does she have to do with all this? Well, just read to find out. This mystery was quite enjoyable, what with all the possible suspects and the twists and turns of the various political and romantic/sexual intrigues. I'm not super good at solving mysteries beforehand in a book but I think that even if I were I wouldn't have been successful in this case. The murderer here wasn't even on my radar. So for me this was a 5-star mystery. Why I don't give the book 5 stars is because of the couple's personal problem and its treatment. They're trying to work things out but they are so phlegmatic and cool and almost passionless in their conversations and their treatment of each other. I suppose we are to think that in those three months between this book and the previous one is when they had their major blowup but it feels as if they hadn't really scratched the surface of this deceit and betrayal. They still tread very lightly around each other and there's some passive-aggressiveness in occasional comments by Malcolm which makes me feel they need way more work. So, in summary, I loved the mystery but felt somewhat unsatisfied by how personal relationship is developing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The wait has been worth it. By S. G. Shoemake I just re-read "Mayfair" - and it was just as magical as the first time. It drew me in and I chafed at life's annoyances [showering, eating, grocery shopping, etc.] until I could get back. "Mayfair" meets my hallmark of "keepers" because there are new avenues and new hidden "rooms" to find upon each re-reading.Congratulations Tracy on another home run.
