A delightful and pointed look at the rising upper middle class in England, this book picks up where the interlude "Indian Summer of a Forsyte" left off and continues the story of Young Jolyon and the man of property himself, Soames. This installation continues the theme of musing on the nature of possession and freedom as they relate to love and marriage as Soames wishes to remarry so that he can have a son who can help keep the family property intact. Usually bound together with "Awakening", the interlude that binds this book generationally to _To Let_.Discovering the world of the Forsytes has been one of my delights of the year. I have no idea why these books have been forgiven, but they're really wonderful. Discover them yourself!

Fewer have read the Galsworthy book, and that's a shame, because it's fascinating on so many levels. "In Chancery" is the story of the divorce of the two main characters, Soames and Irene. But without what came before, you'll lose the significance of what happens. On the surface it's the story of Soames Forsyte, the quintessential icon of the growth of the upper middle classes and the decline of the nobility during the Victorian era. Descended from a farmer in Dorset in the not-too-distant past, Soames is a lawyer and a man of property. He buys wisely, sells more wisely, and husbands his wealth and that of the family. He is in control of everything that affects him, except one thing--his wife. Desiring to possess the sensitive, beautiful, genteel but poor Irene, and with the help of a callous mother, Soames pressures Irene into becoming his wife. From this single mistake, the one time Soames let passion rule, his life and the lives of his family and their descendants are changed in unpredictable and frightening ways. Galsworthy's theme is the constant tussle in life between property and art, love and possession, freedom and convention. In the fine tradition of family sagas, these themes play themselves out over and over with each generation. On another level, this is the story of an age, the story of the British Empire at its peak. Galsworthy packs his book with allusions to the great crises of the time, the Boer War and WWI, the rise of Labour, the death of the Queen, the spread of "democracy." The Forsyte homes are meticulously detailed, from the French reproduction furniture to the dusty sofas to the heavy drapes, to the fireplace grate, to the electric lights in the old chandeliers. Soames collects art, and Galsworthy showers us with the opinions of a British gentleman of the great and not so great art of the day.The saga was written over a period of many years, and on yet another level I found the the changes in Galsworthy's style from the rather clipped, detailed recitations of events and commentary typical of the 19th century to the more expressive style of the 20th. Especially in the first volume of the three, family relationships are painstakingly laid out, the rounds of dinners and family gatherings carefully chronicled. By the third volume, To Let, Galsworthy reveals the love of the countryside and the pain of repressed emotions that the family members a generation ago would have hidden. The writing is very beautiful--as in this sentence: "Fleur raised her eyelids--the restless glint of those clear whites remained on Holly's vision as might the flutter of a caged bird's wings."It took me a good six weeks to plow through The Forsyte Saga, but it was worth it.

More family affairs By Alysson Oliveira In the second installment of "The Forsyte Saga", writer John Galsworthy reassumes the life of the Forsyte family. "In Chancery" is situated a few years after the events told in "The Man of Property", in a few pages recaps some of the most important facts of the first book and their aftermath. After that he is able to move on.And on he moves -- but the narrative still concerns on young Jolyon, Soames and Irene that forms a love triangle. While the remaining Jolyon become a close friend to Irene, her ex-husband --from whom she hasn't divorced in all those years -- fells jealous and considers claiming his wife back.Needless to say that this is not the only plot in the novel. Galsworthy develops more family plots. It is impossible not to have the feeling that while he is sometimes depicting the shallowness of the elite from his time, at the same time he has an indulgent look upon the rich and wealthy -- which is not a bad thing as a matter of fact. Those who like "The Man of Property" will certainly find more pleasure in "In Chancery". He finishes the book with the perfect hook what will come next.

Giovanni Roma was jilted at the altar. Twice. Meeting Natalie is an enchanting distraction - too bad she's engaged to another man. To top it off, Giovanni's mother has a mouth with no filter and is obsessed with finding her son a suitable baby-maker.

Natalie DeMarco is a good cop with one problem. Cold feet. Her fiancé is a decent man, but she's starting to wonder if decent is good enough. Maybe the doubts could be blamed on Giovanni, that guitar-making Italian hunk next door.

Giovanni knows he must do something, but things get out of hand when he learns he's not the only one who objects to the wedding.

Dog Day Wedding is a fast, fun romantic comedy that gives new meaning to the term, "Shotgun Wedding".

32 of 32 people found the following review helpful. hilarious! By mandy This book was seriously laugh-out-loud hilarious. Giovanni is left at the alter for the second time in his life. Giovanni's mom is really upset, she can't wait for grand children and has no problem telling Giovanni (and anyone else) exactly what is on her mind. Natalie is a cop who lets Giovanni out of a ticket on the worst day of his life. She's engaged to be married but is starting to get a bit of cold feet. When Giovanni and Natalie meet, there is an instant connection but with Giovanni just having been left at the alter and Natalie set to get married in two weeks, they know that nothing can happen between them. I loved this book, it was light and sweet and combined three of my favorite things: romance, comedy and dogs. This was fast paced and a pretty quick read. This isn't a steamy book but the comedy more than made up for the lack of sexy time. I really loved this story and can't wait to read more by this author! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a sweet, funny romance!

With a capital F.The story opens with Giovanni being stood up at the altar. As he drives away from the church, he stops to help an elderly woman catch her runaway dog, and almost gets a ticket for leaving his car parked in the middle of the street, but the officer takes pity on him and lets him off with a warning. Later he meets that officer again – turns out she's his neighbor's granddaughter.Natalie is about to marry Jacks, despite the fact that he seems more interested in his car than in her. He doesn't even know her favorite color or flavor of ice cream. After not giving Giovanni a ticket, she sees him again while at her grandfather's house – outside, in his yard, in his underwear. He certainly gets her attention.I loved the banter between Giovanni and Natalie, and they seemed to click together right away. Most of the characters in the book were pretty memorable, with their own distinct personalities. Giovanni’s mother isn't very likable, calling her son rude names while obsessively trying to match him up with someone who will quickly produce grandchildren. But his friends Stevie and Danny were welcome additions who I enjoyed. There's also Precious, the runaway dog who Giovanni finds himself dog sitting, and who was the catalyst in putting Natalie and Giovanni into each other's company.A new character was introduced towards the end of the book, and his appearance came out of left field. His involvement and the direction the story took disconcerted me a bit. I felt like the plot almost went over the top at that point. However it was all resolved very satisfactorily. It's not a deep character study, but rather a light, frothy, funny story that made me laugh out loud several times. It's refreshing to find a cute romantic comedy written by a man, and I've already bought, and look forward to reading, Mr. Amooi's previous book, FIVE MINUTES LATE.(I received this book from NetGalley for review. My review was first posted on my blog, OctoberWoman.)

By LifeWithJoy Review originally posted on my blog www.livinglifewithjoy.comRich Amooi is at it again with another fabulously entertaining romantic comedy! I love reading his work, not only because it’s absolutely hilarious [which it is], but I’ve come to enjoy reading fun romance novels written from the male perspective. I don’t see too many men writing funny romantic comedies but if they could all write like Rich, there would be way more men on the scene!Dog Day Wedding is written with Amooi’s signature male humor and is anything but crass. This novel is about a man named Giovanni Roma who gets dumped at the altar on his wedding day, twice! Talk about some bad luck, or maybe just some bad taste in women? The story follows Giovanni in the events that follow his unfortunate wedding day. Throughout the novel he meets some seriously funny people and gets into some interesting situations that will leave you holding your stomach from laughing too hard and flipping the page to find out what happens next.Following the non-wedding, Giovanni has a hilarious chance meeting with a woman named Beatrice and her adorable little dog. In a twist of fate he then meets Natalie, a gorgeous cop that’s [unfortunately and surprisingly] engaged to the least passionate man on the planet. I enjoyed seeing their friendship grow throughout the novel and I found myself completely engaged in their story. The main topic of this novel is love and the idea that you can’t force things when it comes to love. The point of love should be about making one another happy, not about putting up a pretense of a happy relationship. It shouldn’t be about materialistic things in life like a big diamond or a fancy car. It should be about spending time together and being happy with one another. You should want to spend every waking minute with this person that you have so much passion and feelings for. Love isn’t about having a big rock for others to notice and admire and ultimately, you have to let love happen naturally.Filled with funny and heart-felt scenes, Dog Day Wedding is an absolute must-read, as was Amooi’s first novel Five Minutes Late [and likely anything else that he writes in the future]. Check out my review of his first novel Five Minutes Late for more insight on his writing. I recently introduced a close friend to Rich’s novel Dog Day Wedding and she absolutely loved it! I can tell you that anyone that enjoys romantic comedies will love this story. 5 stars for this hilarious novel!

Nice comedy By Humberto Lucero though you may expect some slap stick situations in a comedy that light all the same it meant an agreeable time to learn about a single young woman trying to placate her anxious parents regarding her matrimonial status compared to her successful brother. The author's style is easy to follow and I found many an expression 21st century-like. The fact that the author is a man adds to the fun, I spent a good afternoon with his characters.

Such a fascinating character deserves an equally fascinating story By Karl Janssen Originally published in 1830, Gobseck is among the earliest handful of works to be included in Balzac's magnum opus La Comédie Humaine, a collection of over 90 novels and stories in which he attempts to depict all the myriad aspects of French society. This novella contains many of the same characters that feature in his novel Père Goriot. Though that masterpiece was published five years later than Gobseck, the two works must have been conceived somewhat simultaneously, as their stories are intricately interwoven. That said, one need not have read one in order to enjoy the other, and even those with no knowledge of Père Goriot can still appreciate Gobseck.Late one evening in the salon of the Vicomtesse de Grandlieu, the conversation turns to the discussion of a young man, Ernest de Restaud, for whom the Vicomtesse's niece Camille bears some romantic feelings. A guest and friend of the family, the attorney Monsieur Derville, shares a story from his past which he claims relates to the young man. The connection is not readily apparent, however, as the story he tells is primarily concerned with a former neighbor of his, the moneylender Jean-Esther van Gobseck. "Daddy Gobseck," as he is sometimes affectionately called, is an aged man of action with a mysterious past whose entire existence and personal philosophy revolves around the acquisition of wealth. He craves money not for the things it will buy him, but for the effect it gives him over people's lives. He considers himself and a small group of his professional colleagues to be the ten most powerful men in Paris. As people of all walks of life come crawling to him, begging for loans at usurious rates, their personal dramas become to Gobseck what the theatre is for art lovers. He is a connoisseur of desperation. Derville develops a social relationship with his neighbor, but eventually must consult the moneylender on a matter of business. From that point on he becomes Gobseck's legal advisor and bears witness to many of the old man's dealings. When Anastasie de Restaud, the daughter of Père Goriot, consults the usurer in hopes of concealing from her husband the fortune that she has wasted on her lover, the real drama of the story begins. The novella starts out auspiciously enough. Balzac's character sketch of Gobseck is remarkably vivid and absolutely fascinating. The book takes a turn for the worse, however, the deeper it delves into the affairs of Madame de Restaud. The dramatic events that lead the characters to seek out the moneylender are riveting. The mathematics of their business transactions, on the other hand, often dull the emotional impact of the plot. In Gobseck, as in other of his works, Balzac demonstrates his fascination with legal proceedings. He delights in the mechanics of wills, deeds, writs, and contracts--a proclivity that this reader, for one, does not share. Were it not for the tedium and confusion inspired by so much clerical detail, Gobseck would likely be every bit as strong as Père Goriot. If you haven't already read Père Goriot I would strongly suggest you do so, not because it's a prerequisite for reading this book, but simply because it's Balzac's greatest work. If you enjoyed that excellent novel, then you will probably find much to appreciate in Gobseck as well. Despite the preoccupation with legal matters in its latter half, Gobseck is still a very good story overall, and Balzac has endowed it with a few truly unforgettable scenes. The singular title character alone makes it well worth the reading.

Seeing Shylock win, and almost cheering him on By Vincent Poirier Shakespeare's Shylock utters few words and by this writer's trick, we are made to feel the economy, the careful greed, of the money lender. Balzac makes use of the same device for his money lender, Jean-Esther van Gobseck, known as Papa Gobseck. When asked direct questions, the prodigeously verbose Honoré de Balzac has Gobseck answer in short phrases or even monosyllables.-You hold the trust?-Possibly.-Will you then take undue advantage of the crime the lady has just committed?-Just so!The main difference between Shylock and Gobseck is that Shylock loses everything in the end and we can think of him as a tragic hero complete with a tragic flaw. Gobseck on the other hand wins, so there is no reason for us to feel empathy. He goes for the pound of flesh, albeit figuratively, and ruins many clients. We should hate him, I am sure many readers do, but instead we cheer him on partly because because he is so clever, partly because he simply profits from the mistakes of others. Gobseck's gains may be excessive but they aren't entirely unfair. For all that, Gobseck is unlovable. He isn't actually malevolant, he isn't even dishonest. He deeply respects the world. "Life is a craft, a profession, that one must take the trouble to learn" says he about about a man dying for being too sensitive and for not knowing how to overcome the adversities of life. But while understanding how the man got beaten, one of the few men form whom he held some esteem, Gobseck has no empathy for him. He simply doesn't love anything, so how can we love him?A wonderful character to encounter in Balzac's Monde.Vincent Poirier, Quebec City

First, I must explain that I make the world's best brownies, so I have been told. Before I was a widow, everyone loved my brownies. I gave them to anyone who helped me in exchange for their service. I also gave them as a gift for most occasions. If I needed a birthday, a “get well”, a “thank you” or any other gift, I gave brownies. Everyone loved my brownies. Becoming a widow was an entire new world. The men I dated did not want brownies for dessert. They had other ideas. To start dating at 65 was an experience I can't wait to share with you. . . so read The Widow's Brownies and come into my new world just for a little while. Hopefully, when you see a plate of brownies you will just laugh and think of me.

Together, Poppy and Simon realize that movement makes them feel better--but that alone isn't enough for the strip of colored lights on their shirts (signifying their energy levels) to change from red to green. So they try eating different types of foods--first snack foods and soda, then fruits and vegetables--before figuring out that healthful food makes them feel great. But something's missing, and they quickly realize it's sleep. Once they put together the equation--"Eat right, move more, and sleep well for energy"--the kids, along with their parents, set off to re-energize the whole village by sharing the lessons they've learned.Rath writes in clear prose and asks lots of questions so that kids can work through the problems themselves--"When Poppy and Simon wake up the next morning, they feel even better than they did the day before. Simon looks at Poppy and asks her, 'Do you think sleeping gave us more energy?' " The story's lesson is straightforward but important, as it teaches kids that taking small steps in their lives can makes them feel better physically and think more clearly. Aón's (The Lonely Existence of Asteroids and Comets, 2012, etc.) detailed, colorful illustrations, in which the people resemble Pixar characters, will help draw readers in. The book also doubles as a workbook, as Rath lists discussion questions at the end that may help kids talk to parents or teachers about living healthier lives. It also includes stickers to help motivate younger readers, including one with an illustration of a colored-lights strip and one that reads, "I am fully charged!" A children's book that imparts key lessons about health without forfeiting an entertaining story.

Great story - Great message By kowrite1 Like many of the most popular children's movies, this book offers an entertaining story for children as well as a great reminder for adults. The kids in the book find a way to change the people around them in a positive way, one person at a time. And for many along the journey toward health and happiness, that's how it happens, one connection at a time. The idea of using simple steps to recharge your batteries is easy for kids to understand and relate to and the stickers are a way to make it real. It doesn't hurt to be reminded that movement, sleep and eating right are things we can all do everyday to make our world a little better and it's a great lesson for kids of all ages to learn.

As a physician there is no better book for an adult to read than Eat Move Sleep to learn about how make the small choices that add up to an energetic health filled life. The Rechargeable is very well done to bring this same message to children. We've got great evidence that demonstrates that teaching children about making healthy choices ultimately changes a family even without the family ever being otherwise involved. My children have enjoyed reading the book over and over again. They have heard the message from Mom and Dad but they really liked the characters in the book and somehow the characters resonate in a magical cartoon type of way. The bottom line is the message is getting through. This is a book that should be in every home and most certainly every pediatricians office.

By Ms. Kardin's 4th Grade I tried this book out with my 4th graders and it rated an overwhelming 5! This was a fun book to read aloud and share the beautiful pictures that added so much to the story. Here are some of the comments my students had…“I liked this book because it has a lot of detail and it’s funny when they rolled their parents down the hill.”“I loved it so much I wanted my teacher to read it again!”“It teaches you to stay healthy and keep moving, sleeping, and eating healthy.”“I like your books because they have a life lesson.”“It teaches you to eat the right foods and stay active and get a good night sleep.”With a few suggestions thrown in…“This is a great book for younger kids and is probably more appealing to a younger audience.”“What I think would go in well is that the whole village starts out with energy but then lose it due to junk food and being lazy so that the readers know how they lost their energy.”

Melanie is a lovable, caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all—with a special ability to see and hear spirits, travel out of her body, and affect electronics around her when she gets emotional. All of her life she’s been called a witch and told she is going to hell, until one day she meets Kevin, a Bible teacher and deacon who tells her “Melanie, you are not a witch. God made you a medium for a special purpose"--and an unlikely but close friendship begins. After Kevin shows her from the Bible how God actually supports her gifts, Melanie and Kevin’s wife, Stanna, inspire him to write a book to help all psychically-gifted persons. With the help of a psychic and book publisher, Dyan, they are initiated into the world of book publishing. When the book is finally published, Melanie is ready to take on the world—from having group readings in her home town to taking “under her wing” younger mediums from around the world. Kevin, meanwhile, is invited to be a guest on several spiritual talk shows. Just as two filmmakers in the UK and New Zealand make plans to do a documentary on Melanie, she suddenly passes away. Without Melanie, Kevin feels lost—until the younger mediums she mentored bring messages to Kevin from her, and point out the signs that Melanie is still very close to him—encouraging him to continue their very unique message of love to psychics and mediums around the world. It’s not only a true story—it is a factual one, with most of its dialogue taken directly from audio and video files, Facebook chats and messages, and emails over a four-year period. Metaphysical celebrities such as David M. Baker, Mark Ireland, Tania Thomas, Peggy Imm-Anesi, the Psychic Twins, and others share the adventure with Melanie and Kevin to support their message. And Melanie herself shares with you her feelings and stories of what it is like to be her, and to have her abilities. Melanie: A Christian Medium’s Life and her Gifts of Spirit is unlike any other book you have ever read!

Melanie: A Christian Medium's Life and her Gifts of Spirit, by Kevin Schoeppel

About the Author Kevin Schoeppel was raised in in Southern Baptist churches, and began teaching the Bible in 1992. In 1999 he was ordained as a deacon by Pima Street Baptist Church of Tucson and in 2006 was elected Adult Education Director of the church. His interest in psychics began in 1975 with a girlfriend who could predict the future. This relationship sparked his interest in social attitudes towards psychics, and in how psychic ability actually worked. He married his wife Stanna—also a psychic—in 1978. In the mid-2000’s, as paranormal-themed TV shows appeared, Kevin’s students had questions about what the Bible really said about psychics and mediums. Upon joining Facebook in 2009, Kevin friended several mediums who were happy to share their experiences with him upon realizing that he accepted them and their gifts. In 2010 he met Melanie Runyan, a medium in Kingman, AZ. She, along with Stanna, encouraged Kevin to write his first book, "The Bible: The Truth about Psychics & Spiritual Gifts," which was published in 2013. He and Melanie remained close friends until her passing in March 2014. As a result of the book, which teaches how the Bible supports psychic and mediumship abilities as true spiritual gifts, Kevin has been the featured guest on several Internet talk shows, such as David M. Baker’s Beyond The Gate Radio, Christina George’s Paranormal Connections, and Peggy S. Imm-Anesi’s Signs Our Loved Ones Send Us. His second book, "Melanie: A Christian Medium’s Life and her Gifts of Spirit," to honor Melanie’s memory, was published in late 2015. Kevin lives near Tucson, Arizona with his wife Stanna.

Being a Christian I use to have concerns about my gift , but I don't anymore thanks to him. I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin who is now a friend of mine ,as well has been a inspiration to me and who by his writings and his knowledge of the Bible has helped me to continue my journey helping others who have lost loved ones, especially those like myself that have lost their children as I have lost 2 of mine to Cystic Fibrosis. I truly believe, though I never knew Melanie in this life she has guided both Kevin and myself to meet, for us as Christians, to help many. Kevin has also co/hosted with me on my blogtalkradio.com/peggysimmanesi show "SIGNS OUR LOVED ONE'S SEND US" on several occasions as we work together quite well letting others know there is truly a Heaven and life after death and that the Lord gave us this gift . I would like to thank Melanie for putting us in each others paths to continue the work she was doing while she was here on Earth and continues in Heaven. I am also a author of a bestselling book called "RAINBOWS, BUTTERFLIES & ONE LAST HUG" and am now in the process of writing 4 other books including a poetry book . My books are filled with many signs that I and others have received from the other side from my late children and others that I have lost from this life . I highly recommend reading Kevin's books as they are like no other ones I have ever read and within his pages you will learn what life is about and how we all come here with a job to do . His books are amazing !!!! Once again thanks to both Kevin and Melanie who now makes me comfortable in what I am doing and understanding my gift .God Bless Peggy S Imm Anesi

What a blessing Kevin was to her to have her realize that she was doing Gods work and was not strange! Appreciate how Kevin works in scripture and common sense (hello!) to explain that Medium and other psychic gifts can be from God. Amazing how a term is outdated and misinterpreted that can cause fear. Some of us are born this way... the way God made us... like Melanie who use this gift to lift others up and help heal. Well laid out book, lots of great info, lots of great stories. thank you Kevin.. can't wait for the next one. You have inspired me to step into my gift and start on my book again.

I just wish there would have been more "Melanie" stories, but know she left us before she shared all of them. I grew up with Melanie (when she was still Sherill) and "reconnected" with her several years ago. Think of her often and pray that she keeps up with all of us!

We already had Raising Peaceful Kids and my wife got this book right when it came out. The tips and suggestions are simple enough to remember to do - which is the whole point! They are small, but meaningful, habits to incorporate into your daily routine that will shape the types of memories your child makes as they grow up. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants happy children!!

By DabOfDarkness Gary is a programmer and has been hired by zombies to create a zombie dating website for them. Gary is not too enthused at first, but then begins to see the monetary advantages to such a website. Meanwhile, Greg and Amy have met through the website and are trying to meet in real zombie life. This was a fun audiobook with a fun cast. There are basically only 5 characters – Gary (evil programmer), Amy (hottie zombie), Greg (another hottie zombie), Stef (Amy’s BFF who would like to be more), and Zed (Greg’s wingman). Being zombiefied is just a new way of life that the young generation has gotten use to. Zombies hold jobs, go to college, and date. Hence, the need for a zombies-only dating site. The story is told in a humorous fashion, often breaking that fourth wall and talking directly to the listener. Occasionally, the humor was a little overdone, a little over accentuated. But for the most part I was found it amusing and engaging. My favorite character was Stef (with Gary being a close second). Stef chose to go zombie in order to stay friends with Amy. And I do believe Stef wouldn’t mind if things became more than friendly. Alas, I think she is in for heartache in the future as Amy seems completely oblivious.Gary was fun partly because he is still human and partly because he is an ass. He really doesn’t like zombies and thinks of them as subhuman. Yet he will take their money to go start a website. He continues to be a jerk throughout the story, but his jerkscapades grow proportionately throughout this short tale. I loved the anticipation of watching him fall!I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost from one of the narrators (via the GoodReads Audiobooks group) in exchange for an honest review.Narration: The narration was tip top on this book. The full cast, not something you usually see for such a short story, really made this book work. Obviously, each character had their own distinct voice and each narrator did a great job of giving them attitude and emotions (even the zombie characters).

Professionalizing Early Childhood Education as a Field of Practice: A Guide to the Next Era, by Stacie Goffin

Review If the world were ideal, what conditions would need to be in place to structure ECE as a profession?" This question posed in chapter 3 caught my attention and crystalized for me the essence of Professionalizing Early Childhood Education as a Field of Practice. We all know the world is not ideal, but we can and should have the courage to improve it with this book by Stacie Goffin. She leads us to think deeply and to take responsibility for the quality of education for young children. The book's practical suggestions for organizing Conversations with Intent (C/I) give us exactly the guidance needed to move forward and establish ECE as a field of practice. I am optimistic that we will achieve the goal. Read the book, reflect, invite early educators in your area, follow Stacie's model, facilitate a group, stay connected, and together we will make it happen.—Angèle Sancho Passe, author of Evaluating and Supporting Early Childhood TeachersAs Stacie Goffin points out, this is a defining moment for early childhood education. Public need and demand for high quality early childhood programs continue to grow. States and the federal government are considering and increasing licensing standards for centers, education requirements for teachers, and accountability systems for programs serving children birth-to-school entry. Will the field lead defining what is needed for systems of preparation, practice, and accountability or not? Will the early childhood field, as Goffin aptly questions, "realize its potential and fulfill its promise to children, families, and to society, "or will it "continue accommodating the status quo?" Local, state, and federal policy certainly plays an important role in education, including early childhood education. But that role should be supportive, not directive or field defining, but this will only happen with a unified voice from the early childhood education field that articulates how best educators should be prepared and educators and programs should be supported, compensated, and held accountable to meet the needs of the children and families they serve. Goffin has put forth a compelling case and framework for moving forward. The field should embrace it and begin the work to "change from inside out" and become a true profession.—Laura Bornfreund, Early Education Initiative New America Education Policy ProgramIn this book, Goffin taps the essence of leadership - the unwillingness to live with the status quo. She continues to compel us to face the reality of the ECE profession. She helps us accept that there are no "sidelines" in this work so not to bother looking for those seats. We must be "all in" and thoughtfully engaged in "conversations with intent" if our intention to professionalize ECE is to become a reality. Her strategies and recommended practices give us the courage to begin the journey, the tools to look inward to identify the challenges, and the belief that, if we embrace our fear and the uncertainty in this work, we can make this happen. We must be brave enough to leave the shore and trust the journey. Only we can make the journey, but the children are worth it.—Margaret KreischerStacie Goffin makes a strong case to confront the hard questions that divide the early childhood field of practice. She's right. The time has come to unify and professionalize the field—not just rhetorically but as evidenced by the caliber of interactions with children and their families. We all need to reflect on our roles and rethink our positions if together we are going reengineer an early care and education system which offers infants, toddlers and young children the early learning experiences they so richly need and deserve.—Matthew Melmed, Zero to ThreeFew can any longer deny that ECE's fragmentation is hurtful to children and to ECE as a field of practice. Few can now deny that inclusive early learning settings for young children are beneficial to all involved - whether children with typical trajectories of development or those whose development pathways diverge from this trajectory. Fulfilling these aspirations, though, requires we enter into the conversations Stacie proposes. Kudos to her for preparing this guide for our journey.—Pamela Winton, Frank Porter Graham Child Development InstituteGoffin's book provocatively and insightfully sets the stage for "conversations with intent" about what should define and unite early childhood education as a field of practice. The inclusion of early intervention and early childhood special education in these conversations is critical to ensure all children and each child as well as their families benefit from a competent and unified workforce. The conversations will not be easy and the questions to be addressed are challenging. The guidebook Goffin has artfully crafted will help stimulate the forms of conversation as well as the collective actions needed to propel us from our present state to a new era$mdash;and a unified field of practice.—Patricia Snyder, University of FloridaFor over a decade Stacie Goffin has persuasively argued that leadership is needed within the field to transform it into a coherent, competent, and accountable profession. In this guidebook she defines the hard questions and provides the tools for structuring conversations that will make that vision a reality.—Paula Jorde Bloom, National Louis UniversityProfessionalizing Early Childhood Education as a Field of Practice: A Guide to the Next Era is a pick for any early childhood education collection strong in professional development and offers the invitation to participate in a process that helps define ECE as a professional field of practice. Chapters focus on professional development processes and discuss many of he major issues that remain in early childhood education. From how a facilitator can handle professional conversations defining the field to workbook pages that lend to meaningful dialogue, Professionalizing Early Childhood Education as a Field of Practice: A Guide to the Next Era is a ‘must’ for any working in early childhood education. “—James Cox, The Education Shelf: CA BookwatchIn this small but power packed volume, veteran Early Educator and Child Advocate, Stacie Goffin takes on the ambiguous and challenging dilemmas of defining ECE as a profession. She accurately outlines the way the field has spent decades reacting to our problems professionally rather than proactively defining and implementing necessary changes to accommodate the new research of the scientific community that demands new approaches to the care and education of the next generation. With courage and a balanced knowledge of the "pushback" bound to occur as these changes are advanced, she insists that the field recognize the urgency of the situation and rise to the necessity of "accepting responsibility for its practitioners' competency and their contributions to children's learning and development."This book provides a timely call to action for all of us who recognize how typical care and education all too often "...are contrary to our beliefs and knowledge about how best to support children's learning and development." It is clearly written, concise, and coherent. Ms. Goffin extends a level of understanding and empathy about the effects of these necessary changes on many currently employed practitioners whose training fall short of suggested expectations for minimal requirements, academically. Yet she takes the stand, without flinching, that this must be viewed as the moral task of our field. It is truly a must read for all who care about children!—Carol Garhart Mooney, Early Childhood Educator and author of Theories of Practice: Raising the Standards of Early Childhood Education

About the Author Stacie Goffin is a widely recognized authority in early childhood education with a passion for raising the competence of ECE as a field of practice. "A great choice for beginning chapter-book readers." —SLJ

The morning bell has rung at Watertower Elementary School, and it’s time for Mrs. Pidgeon’s class to turn to page 52 in their science books to learn about one of the most spectacular scientific subjects of all—the human body! As usual, Gooney Bird has a special plan to make learning more fun. But what on earth is in that scary-looking box that her uncle, Dr. Oglethorpe, has brought to the second grade? And what does it have to do with the charms on Gooney’s jingling silver bracelet? It looks as if another special story is in the works!

Gooney Bird and All Her Charms (Gooney Bird Greene), by Lois Lowry

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—Gooney Bird and her second-grade classmates are studying the human body. The students are in for a surprise when her uncle, Dr. Walter Oglethorpe, an anatomy professor, loans them a skeleton to help them with their research. They use it as an opportunity to teach the whole school about the human body as they label where different parts would be, such as the brain, muscles, digestive system, etc. The skeleton, on display outside the school to show the location of the respiratory system, goes missing, and Gooney Bird becomes head detective, leading her class on an investigation to solve the mystery. The youngsters are enthusiastic, outgoing, and funny. The running joke throughout the story is, "Mrs. Pidgeon's second grade finds this humerus." Readers will discover important facts about anatomy as they follow along with this remarkable class. Line drawings bring to life the unique scenarios the students create for the skeleton. A great choice for beginning chapter-book readers.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH

From Booklist When Mrs. Pidgeon’s second-grade class studies the human body, Gooney Bird arranges for her uncle to lend them Napoleon, the skeleton he uses as a professor teaching anatomy. Gooney Bird and her classmates find novel, amusing ways to involve the whole school in their learning experience, right up until Napoleon is stolen. His disappearance adds an unexpected element of mystery to the narrative, which conveys a certain amount of information along with a vibrant attitude toward learning, an appreciation for the children’s varied personalities, and a wry sense of humor. Pencil drawings illustrate this appealing chapter book from the Gooney Bird series. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Review "[Napoleon's] disappearance adds an unexpected element of mystery to the narrative, which conveys a certain amount of information along with a vibrant attitude toward learning, an appreciation for the children's varied personalities, and a wry sense of humor."—Booklist"As always, the story is full of spot-on dialogue that captures every enthusiastic remark or bashful comment added by these winning second graders. It combines with a compelling story structure that is not only highly readable, but entertainingly informative."—Kirkus"A great choice for beginning chapter-book readers."—School Library Journal

"With apt jokes, recognizable classroom curriculum, and comfortably familiar characters, not to mention sly jabs at censorship, Lowry's Gooney Bird and her skeletal adventures will satisfy readers who appreciate a humerus tale."—Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

Hibbard My ten-year-old was so excited when she saw a new Gooney Bird Greene book come in, that I decided to ask her to give me her likes and dislikes! She loved the storyline and the writing style. Of course, as an avid reader there isn't much she doesn't like! She enjoyed the creativity of this storyline."I liked the part where the class tried to make up stories about Gooney Bird's charm bracelet. Overall, I liked the way they used the charms on Gooney Bird's bracelet to describe what they learned about the human body with Napoleon Bony-parte."Being a book lover, she also loved the fact that Napoleon was sent to the library for some book time! There were a few parts of the book that did not appeal to her greatly - primarily things that just did not fit with her personality. But, she said she would definitely recommend it, especially to Gooney Bird Greene fans!

Probably Gooney Bird does particularly well in elementary school settings.I liked the fact that this story helps kids explore the human anatomy. Kids seem to do so well at learning when things are funny to them, as they are in this story.

Glad to have met Gooney Bird - spirited, funny, and engaging young girl By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog I'd ordered Gooney Bird and All Her Charms with my 6 year old niece in mind. I've been collecting books to send her and I expect that this will go over well. It's my first time to read a Lois Lowry Gooney Bird adventure and it's an easy series to enjoy.Gooney Bird loves hats, glasses, dressing up, but in a way that reminded me a bit of Pippi Longstocking because she chooses her accessories with a sense of fun and purpose. She has a serious hat that she wears for important meetings - such as her meetings with the librarian, the school principal, etc. She's not shy but she's not pushy either. She speaks her mind but listens to her classmates. She's comfortable with the limelight but doesn't have to always be the star. She's the active, self assured, funny girl that I imagine young girls would love to spend time with, befriend, emulate. In this particular story, Gooney Bird's second grade class is studying the human body. Gooney Bird's great uncle lends the class a skeleton as a teaching aid and the students gradually adjust to having a skeleton and are excited to share what they learn about the different systems of the body. The book mixes the biology lessons with humor - and does this very well. The second grade class covers the nervous system, the digestive system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system, skeletal system, and muscular system with humor and a way that kids would understand. The new teaching tool does have a strong opponent and a disaster of sorts that requires teamwork from all the classmates to resolve. The one thing that I didn't enjoy was how the Keiko, the young Japanese American girl, was always scared, worried, easily upset. I'd much rather have a Japanese girl with a samurai spirit instead of a scared nervous and hyper feminine type.I look forward to reading the other books in the series and sharing this with my niece Sofia.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved the first two books in the series By Misti Thuro Wow...Just WOW!!!Thank you, Karlie Mavre for keeping me up all night! Once I started, I could not put it down. Seriously, blown away by this one. I loved the first two books in the series, but I really, really LOVED this one! The pacing of this book was nice and steady. There was a lot going on with all of our characters, and Karlie Mavre did an awesome job of keeping it all straight. I really enjoyed getting to know my favorite "new" character from Winter's Frost even more. This would be Lazryn. I like when an author takes a character that should have no redeeming qualities whatsoever and turns him into someone you root for. And I do! I am rooting for Lazryn all the way. I think there is something special about him that we have yet to find out, and I can't wait for book four to find out what it could be!I've read some reviewers who find Taryn to be too perfect, and it irritates them. In this book, her perfect facade crumbles and we get to see that she has inner demons that she can't always keep at bay. I've liked Taryn from the beginning. She's a strong female character who can take care of herself. I don't think every heroine should be saved by the knight in shining armor. It's refreshing to see a female lead that doesn't need her man to stand in front of her with the proverbial sword. But, I do like that Larkin serves to keep her grounded. He doesn't have the super crazy abilities that she does, but his calming presence is what helps keep her in balance. Seeing her struggle to keep herself from caving in to her emotions was well written and helped humanize her a little more. The last few chapters were just insane! This story has a lot of depth and there are a lot of questions that I have been wanting answered. I was prepared to wait until the very end of book four, though it was secretly driving me mad with speculation! I don't want to spoil it for any other fans of the series, so I will just say that those last couple of chapters will leave you very satisfied. Some of your burning questions will be answered! True to form, the very last paragraph will leave you looking forward to the next installment! I am such a big fan of what the authors have done. Keep up the great work ladies!

This author is one of not the best I have ever read and I read ALOT. No words can describe this series except if you have not read these books you have not read true grateness. I have read other authors who have been awarded so much prestige however none truly compare. The amount of detail and creativity in this series is incredible! Counting down the days until the last installment!!!!

I found only informational text until I saw Magnet Max on Amazon. My kids really love this book! They all sit in silence while I read it. I think it really relates to a child's first interaction with magnets. They think it is magic! I would highly recommend this book, especially if you are doing lessons on magnets. Good, colorful illustrations as well. Just right for 3-5 year olds.
