If you are going through a rocky relationship and on the brink of divorce, this book will be a life-saver for you. I know that is a tall promise, because you may have read other best-selling relationship books in the past that never improved your life. Or you may have tried counseling and failed. This is not surprising, as most couples go for marriage counseling when it is way too late to save their marriages, and most marriage counselors are the kiss of death for marriages. By the time couples get to a counselor, it is usually to receive last rites for the marriage. According to the New York Times, two years after ending marital counselling 25% of couples are worse off than they were when they started, and after four years 38% percent are divorced. I know this first hand, because my neighbor John was a certified Marriage Therapist and two years ago his marriage was in total tatters. I spent a lot of time with John trying to make him understand that Gossip is the secret weapon of all happy couples and how by mastering the Art of Gossip, he could turn his life around. Initially, John dismissed my theory. Why should an Senior Therapist with an MFT from the University of Washington listen to a person with absolutely no Counseling credentials? At the same time John was intrigued by the fact that I was living a beautiful married life using the power of Gossip. John was almost jealous of the fact that I and my wife Suvarna, behaved like newly-weds even after 15 years of marriage. John couldn’t believe that we had never had a serious fight, nor visited a Marriage Counselor in our life. All of this began to affect John and slowly he began to listen to my words. John realized that I was not sharing conventional counselling stuff like ‘improve your communication’ or ‘practice active listening’, but an unheard off ‘Art of Gossiping’ that he hadn’t read in any book or learned in any University. Finally, John gave into my process, simply because he could not argue with the beautiful married life that I was living, right in front of his face. John realised that while he and Clara were shouting their lungs off in one flat, I and Suvarna were enjoying the bliss of togetherness, right next door. John left his logic behind, embraced the new journey, and slowly, but surely John’s life began to change before my eyes. Six months later, I saw the most beautiful sight in my life. John and Clara were walking hand in hand in the small park in front of our apartment. They had put their differences behind them and were in love, all over again. It was at that moment I realized that I had been holding the key to happy relationships for the last 15 years, but I had never shared it with anyone. I felt ashamed. If I had been bold enough to share these ideas with others, I could have saved countless lives of misery and anguish. At that moment, I felt that it was my duty to bring this revelation to the world. It was my mission to disclose the ultimate principle of intimacy. The moment has come for me to shed my shyness and reveal to you the real truth about relationships. Come with me on this exciting journey. Kishore Dharma

Sadly (But Not Entirely Shockingly) Disappointed By Music & Reading Before buying this book, I was already worried because it's free, and it's very short. I was hoping that maybe the author just got to the point and didn't bother with all the mumbo-jumbo some other authors might put up. However, after reading this I can honestly wrap up this book in two words: An ad. All that is in here are vague stories about how the author has implemented his Gossip Therapy, and only very vague references as to what this sort of therapy is. Want to know what exactly you need to do to implement said therapy, how it works and how it can help you save your marriage? No problem, just fork up $47 for the DVD, and it's all good! (He literally puts up a link to the Amazon page at the end of almost every chapter, for he claims that he can't put up a "30 minute session through an eBook.") Add this point to the fact that it's poorly written and seemingly rushed when putting it together, and you get a horrible ad in the shape of a book for a DVD that's overly priced and hopefully not as vague and ill-put together as this book. Definitely not a good deal, in my opinion. Want to try something that could work better and is better put together? Try Dr. Gary Chapman's novels. He seems to have it more put together and useful.

There are 4 short stories about couples, and lots of links to go to the writer's website, I guess to buy more books, I didn't click on them. My marriage DOES need saving, unfortunately, and I thought I was getting a book that would give me some kind of guidance, reassurance, pointers, Something! I've looked at other self help type ebooks on the Kindle library, and thought this would be similar. You know, chapters with clearly outlined sections you can refer back to or skip if it doesn't pertain to your situation. This one I just found odd. It might be entertaining or interesting, maybe even helpful, to others, but it wasn't for me. I'm currently separated from my husband by my choice, because we went through an extremely tough time that I didn't see an easy way out of, and he wasn't doing anything to help it, so I decided to take a break. What really broke were both of our hearts. I want us to get back to the way we used to be when we met, and managed to maintain for almost seven years before life threw us a huge curveball that left us both beyond depressed. However, I managed to make myself take the steps to repair our life..we lost EVERYTHING..and his reaction was to avoid it all. Never thought I'd see the day, but now devouring every book I can find that sounds like it MIGHT help, even a little. This wasn't it.I received this product at a discounted rate for my honest review. If this helped anyone out there please check yes. Thanks.

Could be better By Kimi & Scotty I did enjoy reading this but I feel as if it should have been proof read better because it calls a female "his" instead of the statement needing "hers" some of the sentences don't make sense and I don't like the fact it does not go into more detail . I gave her 3 steps , well what are those 3 steps. Not asking for the whole thing but a jist of what it was. That is why I chose the rating , I may reccomend it but I'm not too sure as it was too quick a read. Every story has another link on how to get this marriage but yet it's suppose to be a book for a reason, right? I am reviewing this product for free for a honest and unbiased opinion. If you found this post helpful please say so, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask :)

Renewal is the eighteenth book of the I Found My Heart in San Francisco series. Degrees in hand, Jamie and Ryan are set to spend the summer doing nothing but relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. Or maybe that’s just Jamie’s plan. Ryan’s idea of relaxing includes taking a full load of summer school courses and tutoring Jennie nearly every day—nothing like Jamie’s ideal of reading, hanging out with friends and taking a few trips. They both thought being finished with school would give them so much free time they’d never be able to fill it. But that hasn’t been the case. The days just seem to fade away— another thing Ryan hates. But as much as she hates having time slip away, her bigger irritation is the marriage preparedness class she and Jamie are involved in. For someone who loves learning, she could hardly be less interested in sharing her own feelings, and hearing about other people’s relationships. That has Jamie stumped, but she’s finding that loving Ryan O’Flaherty requires a near constant shifting of expectations. Every day brings new challenges and joys. A continual renewal of their commitment to love one another to the best of their ability.

I'm always eager to get to the next one to "drop back into" the lives of the characters whom I feel so familiar with. They seem like friends and family. This one was great, but short compared to the others. I was disappointed it had to end. Looking forward to see what happens next to my "friends".

" There are many wonderful characters, including the two principal protagonists By admatt This series is second or third only to such titles as "Tipping the Velvet,"and "Patience & Sarah." There are many wonderful characters, including the two principal protagonists, Ryan and Jamie, whose adventures, over time, are worth reading about. I recommend reading all 18 of the installments completed thus far, as well as those still to be written.

Best Ebook Foreplay, by Mike Taylor

Based on the author's own experiences as a youth, this quirky and hilarious treatment of sexual awakening will keep you in stitches and raise your eyebrows through the roof. It is 1959/1960 and eleven/twelve year old Mathew Tyler's mixed up world revolves around rock'n roll and making out. But his quest for the treasures that young girls keep hidden beneath their clothes is constantly being thwarted by his youthful inexperience, personal demons, and the ever-present threat of intervention by the Old Ones. You know, those wrinkled-up meanies (ADULTS!) who just can't stand to let a kid have some fun. But underlying this ribald and irreverent look at childhood sexuality is a sobering message: the need for sex education for our youth in an era of Aids, sexually transmitted diseases, and untimely pregnancies. The naked reality is that twelve year old girls can and do become pregnant.

His first book The Truth About Immigration pushed the bounds of political correctness. Foreplay , which explores the equally sensitive issue of pre-teen sexuality, is his first work of fiction.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. PROLOGUE

This story is an offbeat account of some wild shenanigans and childhood sexcapades -- as poignant as they were comedic -- that happened to me and some of my friends in 1959 and 1960, at the delicate threshold of puberty. Those zany, pre-adolescent years between eleven and twelve when I bounced from one experience and erotic adventure to the next with no predictability or control, like being shot into a pinball machine.

Why am I telling it? Because it happened. And I believe anything that happens in life is worth knowing about, because it is part of life. But you won't read about it in any library book or hear about it from any teacher, preacher, or parent.

They lie, all of them. The lies are for your own good, they say, but that's what all despots of goodwill say. The Old Ones, those wrinkled-up meanies, those robotic programmers of Adulthood, just want to keep all the fun for themselves.

      That much is clear.

Their hypocritical morals and authoritarian ways are designed to keep kids in fear and ignorance, fighting against the feelings that surge through their bodies naturally by instinct. Sex must be suppressed, at least until kids, those lovable almost-people, are trained to perform their predetermined roles in society as producers, consumers, taxpayers, and parents.

The message is clear. First finish school, then find a job so you can support your own brats (don't stick US! with the bills), THEN you can have sex!

The relentless male sperm that penetrates the female egg can throw the whole upbringing process into chaos, an Old One's worst nightmare. That's the problem. But grownups know full well there are plenty of ways to outfox the predatory army of sperm, they just want to keep that knowledge to themselves.

So sex is reserved for ADULTS ONLY! For children it is taboo. In fact, many Old Ones think that childhood sexuality is an oxymoron, so why talk about it at all? But of course, thinking it so doesn't make it so.

Kids aren't stupid. Neither is nature. Eleven year old boys aren't the innocents they appear, sitting primly at their school desks wearing angelic faces, or watching TV at home munching on mom's cookies, or daydreaming in church (neither are eleven year old girls, for that matter). If you could see into their mischievous minds, or look deeply into their devious eyes, you would know. Little boys are just midget pirates in search of the treasure chests that little girls keep hidden beneath their dresses. Oh yeah, I know what you're thinking, tacky-tacky, but you know exactly what I mean!

But on another level, this story is about more than childhood sexperiences or a fun trip down nostalgia lane, visiting friends come and gone. It is also a journey of self-discovery, offering insights into closet skeletons (forgive me, but it is my book!). The more I think about it the more I'm convinced, and maybe you'll agree, that the past is the place to begin if you have any knots that need unraveling. It is the sum of what you are and will tell more about yourself than reading any tarot cards, palms, stars, or chromosomes.

      But where do I begin?

These events took place over forty years ago. I'm old now, and the mind plays tricks. Since time does not stamp a date on memories, all I can do is dig down and try to unearth the highlights one at a time and, like faded snapshots in a dusty photo album, try to keep them in some sort of order. To be truthful, I don't really know where to start other than to just begin.

EPILOGUE

Children inhabit a world where the immutable laws of nature constantly duke it out with the whims of social convention -- in this case, a battle between sexual biology on the one hand and the combined forces of parents, teachers, and religion on the other. The result is often a mixture of calamity and chuckles round the clock, where kids change chameleon-like from "little angels" into "little devils", and back again, every day.

As the puerile antics of Mathew Tyler and his rascal friends illustrate, raging sex hormones do not respect the wishes of society. They do not wait for school to end, careers to begin, or the age of consent. The simple fact is, in an era of AIDS, children need to be educated about sex for their own protection. Knowledge about sex and contraception is the first line of defense against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted or untimely pregnancies.

A moral crusade based on abstinence alone is playing ostrich. Even in a sexually repressive environment, where the subject is taboo for children, a child of eleven is sexually inquisitive, and a child of twelve in many cases is already sexually active. Arguments about sexual morality and religious values notwithstanding, if it comes down to your child contracting AIDS or becoming pregnant at twelve or thirteen, there is only one maxim worth remembering. That is, when it comes to a squabble between nature and society, nature will always have the last word.

If you pick a fight with Shroud, Lord of the Dead, you had better ensure your victory, else death will mark only the beginning of your suffering.

A book giving its wielder power over the dead has been stolen from a fellowship of mages that has kept the powerful relic dormant for centuries. The thief, a crafty, power-hungry necromancer, intends to use the Book of Lost Souls to resurrect an ancient race and challenge Shroud for dominion of the underworld. Shroud counters by sending his most formidable servants to seize the artifact at all cost.

However, the god is not the only one interested in the Book, and a host of other forces converge, drawn by the powerful magic that has been unleashed. Among them is a reluctant Guardian who is commissioned by the Emperor to find the stolen Book, a troubled prince who battles enemies both personal and political, and a young girl of great power, whose past uniquely prepares her for an encounter with Shroud. The greatest threat to each of their quests lies not in the horror of an undead army but in the risk of betrayal from those closest to them. Each of their decisions comes at a personal cost and will not only affect them, but also determine the fate of their entire empire. The first of an epic swords & sorcery fantasy trilogy, Marc Turner's When the Heavens Fall features gritty characters, deadly magic, and meddlesome gods

When the Heavens Fall: The Chronicles of the Exile, Book One, by Marc Turner

Review

“A splendid launch. Turner's unquestionably a newcomer to watch.” ―Kirkus Review, starred review

“Turner has taken many familiar and popular fantasy elements and made them his own.... As a result, it's a pretty dark, gothic tale and world. I have a feeling this is going to be a hit with fantasy fans of all types. Definitely recommended.” ―Civilian Reader

“Quite gripping.... Promises more thrills and chills to come.” ―Critical Mass

“Mark Turner wrote a damn fine book.” ―Fantasy Review Barn

“It's increasingly rare that an epic fantasy can manage to sustain my interest through the climax, and keep me reading closely, enjoying the details and nuances, as opposed to skimming ahead to find out how it all ends. The darkness, the magic, and the very idea of power really appealed to me here, and I felt Turner did a masterful job of building the story towards that climax. It's a story that just got bigger, deeper, and more intriguing with each new revelation.” ―Beauty in Ruins

“This is a very large and intricate web that Marc Turner has spun... The ending is truly superb.... New and refreshing.” ―The BiblioSanctum

“One of the go-to books of the genre.” ―Starburst Magazine

Fun stuff - has a very late-80s/early-90s feel to it By Bob Milne While I hesitate to call this a throwback or reactionary fantasy, there's no question that When the Heavens Fall has a very late-80s/early-90s feel to it. From the characters, to the world-building, to the story, to the narration, Marc Turner's debut just feels like something I'd almost swear I read 25 years ago. That's not necessarily a bad thing - many of my favorite epics are from that era - but it will certainly present a challenge to readers who've become accustomed to something more polished and more complex.I've already seen some readers complain about the world-building, but I appreciated both the world itself and the way it's built. What you have to understand is that Turner's style is about as far away from info-dumping as you can get. He throws us head-first us into the story, drags us along, and simply expects us to catch up. The politics, mythology, and magic are revealed in sporadic dribs and drabs, often through conversation or internal monologues. You have to pay attention, and you have to make some connections on your own to have the story come together, and I liked that.As for the characters, I liked them, and was certainly invested in their fates, but I'll be the first to admit they could have benefited from a little more emotional depth. The Lurker and Jenna were an interesting pair, playing off one another nicely, but neither one grabbed me and screamed HERO! Ebon was a legitimate hero, but a little too good to be interesting - he really needed a just a few darker, selfish aspects to round him out. Romany was pretty much his polar opposite, a legitimate villain, but a little too bad to be truly interesting, although I loved her interactions with Spider. Parolla, on the other hand, was a character about whom I constantly wanted to see, hear, and know more. I loved her as much as I loved her story arc, and I actually got frustrated when the story moved away from her. Had Turner invested as much effort in building out the other characters as he did her, I think this would have been a much stronger tale. The narration itself was serviceable, but nothing special. Again, like I said, it has that feel of a late-80s/early-90s epic fantasy, when plot came before characters, and characters came before storytelling. It flows well, is nicely paced, and doesn't fall into any of the debut author traps of overused words or phrases, but the switch between POVs is a little harsh at times. There were times I felt like Turner was simply changing POV to give himself time to think, time to figure out what to do with a character next, without advancing too far towards the climactic convergence of magical forces and supernatural powers. With all of that said, I really enjoyed the story. It not only developed well, but it resolved itself nicely. It's increasingly rare that an epic fantasy can manage to sustain my interest through the climax, and keep me reading closely, enjoying the details and nuances, as opposed to skimming ahead to find out how it all ends. The darkness, the magic, and the very idea of power really appealed to me here, and I felt Turner did a masterful job of building the story towards that climax. It's a story that just got bigger, deeper, and more intriguing with each new revelation.I'm really curious to see how fans of the genre respond to When the Heavens Fall. I suspect that will largely depend on how long they've been fans, and how wide their reading experience has been. If it comes across like nothing they've ever read before, that might be a challenge. If it seems at all familiar, however, and evokes any feelings of nostalgia, then I think it's those readers who will be clamoring the loudest for a sequel. Either way, I enjoyed it, and I'm anxious to see what Turner does next.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Turner's debut is perfect for fans of Erikson's Malazan By Patremagne @ 'A Bitter Draft' - Speculative Fiction reviews and things The Book of Lost Souls, an ancient relic guarded closely by a circle of mages for centuries, has been stolen by the rogue mage Mayot Mencada through the subtle directive of the goddess Spider. The Book gives its wielder immense necromantic power, and Mayot’s ambition knows no bounds as he openly challenges the god Shroud’s rule over the underworld by raising the ancient dead and lashing out at any settlement near the Forest of Sighs, the cursed forest he has made his base of operations. The Book emits massively powerful rays of death magic, attracting all manner of other beings. Luker, a Guardian of Erin Elal and a man forced to take on the quest by the very people who betrayed him; Ebon, a prince of Galitia deeply haunted by spirits following a foolhardy expedition into the Forest of Sighs; Romany, a high priestess of the Spider commanded to play the game by her goddess; Parolla, a powerful necromancer with an incredibly mysterious past with an unstoppable drive to confront Shroud for deeds past. Of the four, Parolla easily took the cake for the most interesting and the one whose chapters I was always chomping at the bit for. Ebon followed closely behind Parolla in interest level, as he consistently struggles on the brink of insanity in both his own eyes and those around him. Luker is the stereotypical grizzled war veteran, and it felt like Romany got the least face time, though the things that she did were of import. Each character was developed deftly, but Parolla and Ebon overshadowed Luker and Romany in my interest level.Alongside these protagonists, the disciples of Shroud and the followers of the Hunt are at the fore, the former at the bidding of their lord and the latter in pursuit of one who has angered their god. Shroud’s disciples each make spectacular entrances. I felt the way I did while reading parts of Malazan, when Anomander Rake or any of the awesomely powerful characters did something. They simply leave you thinking holy s***, that was awesome.Comparisons are a curious thing. There’s no surprise that When the Heavens Fall has been compared to Erikson’s Malazan, since Turner cites Erikson as a major influence. Whenever you find people looking for recommendations, you’ll see the same books repeated over and over so many times that it’s hard not to imagine the recommender giving a deep sigh, pulling a scroll from their pocket, and rattling off the go-to genre names. More often yet, these insta-recommendations often don’t have anything more than the basic fantasy tenets in common with the book in question. Turner’s debut is one of the very few books that I can safely and wholly recommend to fans of Erikson. In fact, it’s common in so many ways that it’s probably easier to point out its differences (the only glaring one being that there are fewer main characters in Turner’s). The most prominent similarities are probably the magic and the richness, or even over-richness of the world. I say over-richness because while reading both Malazan and When the Heavens Fall, there are a ton of names of people, races both ancient and modern, events, and objects that it’s staggeringly difficult to keep track of at times. It’s only fitting that both authors’ works have detailed maps and dramatis personae to help out the overwhelmed reader (though a list of terms would have been nice). The magic is the highlight of both series for me. Sometimes it’s very descriptive and visceral like Turner’s death magic, and other times both series simply describe it as sorcery a la “waves of sorcery stripped the flesh from his bones.” The only clear, black-and-white difference between the two is that Mayot Mencada is without a doubt the bad guy, whereas Malazan doesn’t necessarily have one so clearly defined. While When the Heavens Fall is a bit slow to get going, Turner’s writing will have you hook, line, and sinker the way he builds up the story and the sense of foreboding as the Book of Lost Souls pulses greater and greater power from its pages. It’s a tale of convergence no doubt, and the further I read, the more I could tell s*** was going down real soon, and when it all hit the fan there was no stopping. Seriously, I tried to stop three separate times toward the end so that I could do mundane things like eat or go out, and each time I closed the book and stood up, I sat right back down and kept on going, straight through to the thrilling conclusion.

Bean I have been a huge fan of epic fantasy novels since first discovering Lloyd Alexander's books as a child. It is so exciting to discover a new world with adventures to follow, so when I first read this description of a mysterious book being opened drawing the attention of an entire land of both mortals and non-mortals and the living and the dead it sounded so promising. And ultimately became so disappointing. I understand that world-building is complex and difficult and can really lead to a slower read. To combat this, Turner chooses to throw the reader right in with plenty of references that will confuse the reader and to not hesitate to keep the characters moving forward - and towards this convergence point - at all costs. Even patiently giving it a hundred pages, I still felt lost and not connected to any of the characters. They are so shallowly drawn with little insight into their own pasts and motivations that it's hard to muster up the caring. On top of this, every time there is a hint of connection to a character, the scene shifts to another set of characters. Though Turner includes a cast list, what I really wanted was just more exposition into these characters - and maybe a glossary instead of a character list, as they were all relatively interchangeable in motivation. By the time more of their pasts emerge, it is too little too late. I wish that I hadn't slogged through the five hundred plus pages... I wish that I had put it aside when I first wanted to.The plot does keep moving - physically with all of the journeying - but with murky motivations in an unclear landscape, it is just hard to muster up any caring about the outcomes for any of the characters. A successful epic fantasy relies on not only the unique details, but also on realistic characters - people or creatures that you can care about. Some of the supporting characters like Mottle or the ghost of the four-armed demon are more sympathetic, but offer such a small portion of the book that they aren't enough to redeem it. Really, nothing redeemed this one for me... it may not be poorly written on a technical scale, but it does feel heartlessly written. Needless to say, I won't be continuing on with this trilogy.

Three Men on the Bummel, by Jerome K. Jerome

Three Men On The Bummel, By Jerome K. Jerome. Learning to have reading habit is like learning to try for eating something that you really don't want. It will certainly need even more times to help. In addition, it will certainly also bit pressure to offer the food to your mouth and also ingest it. Well, as reviewing a publication Three Men On The Bummel, By Jerome K. Jerome, occasionally, if you must check out something for your new jobs, you will really feel so lightheaded of it. Also it is a publication like Three Men On The Bummel, By Jerome K. Jerome; it will make you really feel so bad.

“What we want,” said Harris, “is a change.” At this moment the door opened, and Mrs. Harris put her head in to say that Ethelbertha had sent her to remind me that we must not be late getting home because of Clarence. Ethelbertha, I am inclined to think, is unnecessarily nervous about the children.

About the Author JEROME K. JEROME (1859-1927), English humorist, novelist, and playwright, was born in Staffordshire and brought up in London. Successively a clerk, schoolmaster, reporter, actor, and journalist, he became joint editor of The Idler in 1892 and launched his own twopenny weekly, To-Day. His magnificently ridiculous Three Men in a Boat (1889) established itself as a humorous classic of the whimsical.

Humorous tales of cycling the Black Forest By K Scheffler I read this book--which I assume is a fictionalized account of an actual journay--after having spent a year in Germany and I bemused by the fact that the Germans that Jerome K. Jerome characterizes in this book (published in 1900) are very similar to those of the present day. Added to this, is the fact that the book is mainly set in the Black Forest region of Germany, which is where I stayed. So not only was this book humorous and entertaining, it rekindled fond memories as well. The writing I fear will disillusion the more casual reader, but for those who have the inclination, this book is a very worthwhile read.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. delightful, if not quite at the level of Three Men in a Boat By Neurasthenic I read this book both because I, like so many, was delighted with Jerome K. Jerome's earlier book, Three Men In A Boat (To Say Nothing Of The Dog...), and because this sequel has the reputation of being a "bicycle book," a genre I often enjoy. In both regards I was slightly disappointed. Though entertaining, Bummel is not as funny as Three Men in a Boat, and though the protagonists in Bummel do travel in part by bicycle, the book is mostly a discussion of the process of planning a trip, and of the German cities they visited. As with Three Men in a Boat, this book seems thoroughly modern in tone and style of humor. Jerome K. Jerome is particularly fond of comical exaggeration of the sort that would seem totally natural on a television sitcom today. After a mistake involving somebody else's bicycle, and a run-in with the authorities, he summarizes "My going scot free is regarded in police circles there to this day as a grave miscarriage of justice."Portions read much like Douglas Adams ("I wish no one to read this book under a misapprehension. There will be no useful information in this book.") and others like John Cleese in Fawlty Towers (a discussion of an English shopkeeper frustrated when the protagonists, as a prank, pretend not to be able to speak English). The material near the start of the book about the friends and their wives is all quite funny, and thoroughly modern in the way the women effortlessly outsmart the men. The discussions of stereotypical German behavior are remarkable mostly for how little such stereotypes have changed. Germans were, 120 years ago and today, thought to be officious and compulsive in following rules. Fans of old bicycle books will find much here to like, with description of the hazards of amateur bike-tuning, and lies in bike advertisements, and the observation that uphills always seem to last longer than downhills. The book is in some regards dated. These passages are in some cases fascinating -- the discussion of how beautiful Dresden is (in 1895), and other German cities that were burned out in World War II. Others are merely confusing (what is the significance of the hats owned by "Mrs Hemans"?). One brief section, told in stereotypical black dialect, will offend some modern readers.

Since I read Three Men in a Boat, I have become addicted to the witty nature & hilarious narrative of Jerome K. Jerome. Three Men on the Bummel is equally funny as it depicts the "three amigos" traveling through Germany with the hysterical commentary of Jerome. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good laugh.

Ellie, by Mike Wu

From Publishers Weekly 'Wu, an animator who has worked on many Pixar hits, makes his literary debut with a story ever-so-gently ripped from the headlines: the artwork-producing elephant...Wu is a literal writer, but his visual storytelling, rendered in sweet, throwback-style watercolors, shows creativity and poise. Ellie, who looks like she’s a branch of Dumbo’s family tree, leads a cast of equally endearing animal characters, and every vignette is expertly framed for a chuckle, an “Awww,” or both: when Ellie paints a portrait of Lucy the giraffe, her subject’s head extends beyond the top edge of the page."- Publishers Weekly

From School Library Journal "Wu's dynamic watercolor illustrations enliven the story, their retro/classic feel possessing a distinctive animation quality that is unsurprising, given Wu's background as a Pixar animator. The effective use of color emphasizes Ellie's transformation, subdued greens and grays becoming a veritable chromatic explosion, "before" and "after" looks of the zoo cleverly highlighted in the endpapers. - School Library Journal

From Kirkus Reviews 'Wu, an animator who has worked on many Pixar hits, makes his literary debut with a story ever-so-gently ripped from the headlines: the artwork-producing elephant...Wu is a literal writer, but his visual storytelling, rendered in sweet, throwback-style watercolors, shows creativity and poise. Like Dorothy arriving in Oz, the world changes when the paint hits the walls. In his first picture book, Pixar animator Wu creates watercolor illustrations that are reminiscent of classics like Harry the Dirty Dog and Curious George. Round Gerard, tall Lucy, and impossibly thin Walt are distinct personalities beyond their physical attributes. There is a timelessness that draws attention to these gentle figures." - Kirkus

Since then I feel so supported by this energy field, we travel a lot together to integrate and remember potential. This book helped me a lot to find out more about my personal dragon, to feel other dragons (the meditations in the book are great) and to learn about somebody else's path - Arana's - with her dragons.I would recommend this book to all that always felt a connection to dragons and/or liked the film and books "Eragon" to remember a relationship that is as old as your soul and such a treasure.

Hear the call of your dragon and be the dragon rider you've always been By Kerstin I read the German version of the dragon guide some time ago and I wanna share my experience for the English speaking interests. With my dragon my whole life has changed completely. It came into my life unexpected and I didn't know, what this means. I felt the immense force and transformation in my life and I started to remember myself through this. And through this book, the workshops and meditations of Christine Arana I realized what this all is meaning, what is happening and how I can handle with it. It brought me back a deep forgotten part of myself. The dragon is a symbol for a field of energy that is within us and part of us. When you are connected to this field, to your dragon, then this energy will act for you. And you can't find your dragon, your dragon will come to you, when the time is right. It carries a really strong force with it. The force for transformation and change in life. It challenges you, to get over your limitations and to unfold your deep inner being. With this book you can immerse into this world of dragons and be deeply moved by it. And you can find again a part of yourself, remembering something that has been part of you for a very long time and refresh this old bond of deep love. Find your personal dragon and let it be a part of your life again. It will teach you and challenge you. And it will force you to change your life and yourself. It will let you feel his deep love to yourself and it will guide you to your own heart, power and magic. The dragon is pure love and magic and it will bring this to you. You will overcome your dark parts, your limitations and light up in your true being. With this book you will first get to know some general things about dragons, Arana’s way to and with her dragon, followed by a meditation to meet your dragon and to refresh the old heart bond. Then the different dragons are described, the color and what it stands for. That helps you to realize your own potential, skills and your own being.Hear the call of your dragon and let the old bond be awaken alife again. It reminds you of what you are. Be the dragon rider that you've always been and bring the change within you and in the world.

At first I thought: "Dragons?! And how to ride them?!" Weired?! Or may be an intriging idea?! Surprised I recognized, I enjoyed reading the book. If you’ve worked with aninaml spirit guides before, why not connect to a dragon as well? The book says on p. 8 „ It is the guardian of the entire knowledge of the universe. I bought this at a book fair after skimming all the five-star reviews on Amazon for my emergent reader and1. The text is NOT 'great for a beginning reader', as other reviews have stated, the words themselves are neither simple phonetically nor high frequency word laden, and developmentally-speaking, kids may enjoy this being read to them with a lot of infection but they aren't going to 'get' the attitude/sarcasm/etc while they are reading themselves until they are a little older.2. Troubling themes!! The movie Inside Out is fantastic and full of great talking points regardinggn emotions and empathy - these books are what happen when the source material is too pimped out to merch: the characters are not even just flat Distilled versions of themselves, they also bring new negative conversations/concepts. Has your child recently experienced a death in the family? Fear's "I consider every day we don't die a success." might give you pause. Does your child eat vegetables or value food? You won't find that concept applauded here, just Anger & Disgust at broccoli on pizza ("Ew, that isn't even a food!"). And lastly, do you like camping, nature, road trips and/or letting your kids get dirty? Because BTW, it's disgusting-central. Disgust's lead in to why she hates camping includes this culturally ignorant gem of things that are the most disgusting, "not having any running water. I don't do smelly." Wow. Precious. If you have or would like to teach your kids about what emotions might parallel with the experience of not having access to running water, toss that book out.Joy & Saddness are the only two books without much issue but alas don't really capture the movie's spirit either - maybe the emotions are just better working together dynamically as they do in the film, and not independently. My kids like looking at the covers and pictures, and pulling the books out and back in to the unique cut-out case. So close to a really great set! - I wish my expectations where not so high! Had I been able to flip through the pages I would not have purchased, these are .50 books printed with much nicer paper and binding.

IN UNDERTAKING to describe the recent and strange incidents in our town, till lately wrapped in uneventful obscurity, I find myself forced in absence of literary skill to begin my story rather far back, that is to say, with certain biographical details concerning that talented and highly-esteemed gentleman, Stepan Trofimovitch Verhovensky. I trust that these details may at least serve as an introduction, while my projected story itself will come later.

The Possessed (The Devils), by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

About the Author Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist, short story writer and essayist whose literary works explored human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual context of nineteenth-century Russia. A student of the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute, Dostoyevsky initially worked as an engineer, but began translating books to earn extra money. The publication of his first novel, Poor Folk, allowed him to join St. Petersburg s literary circles. A prolific writer, Dostoyevsky is best known for work from the latter part of his career, including the classic novels Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov. Dostoyevsky s influence extends to authors as diverse as Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and Jean-Paul Sartre, among many others. He died in 1881.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. political comedy of manners By frumiousb The Possessed (otherwise known as The Devils) the third book that I have read by Dostoevsky. The mandatory Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov were the first two. As usual, I seem to have read the translation which is controversial, largely for being dated. My book is the 1930 Modern Library edition, translated by Constance Garnett. This was the first translation, and the translation is also the reason for the variance in titles with the book. Apparently scholars find The Devils or Demons to be closer to the author's original edition.Issues with the translation aside, it is a timely read. I actually enjoyed it the most of the three Dostoevsky novels. Although far from intended as primarily humorous, I found it often very funny. If you think of it as a kind of political comedy of manners, then you won't be very far from the truth. (I'm sure that comparison is horrifying somebody, somewhere. Apologies.)The political sensibilities of the different characters swirl in a palette of nearly slapstick ineffectiveness except in the ability of all to foster discussion. It's as though the writer's stint in Siberia left him with a general distaste for religion of every stripe. The uncomfortable sternness of Nikolai Vsevolodovich Stavrogin dominates the novel as the only possible choice of morality. And it doesn't seem to be the most pleasant choice, if I look at the various critical text about the book that uses words like "sociopath" to describe him. I actually felt enormous sympathy with Stavrogin. With the exception of Shatov, he seemed to me the only character in the novel whose treatment by Dostoevsky wasn't ruthlessly satirical. Positioned as he is between his sympathies, his upbringing and his influences the distorted actions seem much more understandable. Sometimes perhaps a bitten ear is the only reasonable explanation. I'm not sure what that says about my mood or personality that I found Stavrogin understandable, but there you go.The Wikipedia-fueled Internets tell me that The Possessed was originally two novels-- the story of a real political murder combined with a religious book with Stavrogin as the main character. Given the source and the lack of citations, I am not actually sure if it is true. However, I have to say that if it is true than it was a stroke of genius on the part of the author. Stavrogin's struggles with conventional morality would have risked being self-indulgent and dull without the backdrop of the inane political wrangling. On the other hand, without him, the book would have been a dated satire on contemporary Russian politics-- of interest to scholars and academics. Married, the two aspects feed each other. It seems to me to function very well as a novel. There is undoubtedly much to say about many of the characters. It is a mistake to see only Stavrogin, or even Stavrogin and Shatov. I'm still in the process of chewing through what I feel/think about characters like Kirilov and Maria Timofeevna Lebyadkin. I may need to re-read to say anything smart about the rest.As I said, I like this the best of the Dostoevsky that I have read. I found Crime and Punishment terribly lugubrious and too much drama. I must say that I read The Brothers Karamazov when I was far too young to really appreciate the book and it lost me fairly effectively. I am thinking that it might be a good idea to circle around and reread it sometime soon. I kept having distant echoes of that work as I read this one. I have the feeling that I might understand it better now.

Nothing like the movie...and for once I'm glad to say that By A reader Since it was originally written in the early 1900s, I don't imagine too many people nowadays have read this book without having heard of it through the 1985 Richard Pryor movie adaptation. But if you enjoy the film, as I do, then I'd recommend the novel if you can find it.About all I'll say in comparing the 2 versions is this: the one and only similarity is they both center around a man named Montgomery Brewster having to dispose of a certain sum of willed money within a specified time period, without telling anyone why, in order to be eligible for a larger fortune. That's it. The novel's amounts are different, Mr. Brewster's profession and friends are different, and even the reason for the whole game is totally different - more complex and interesting in the novel, I thought. So it follows that Monty's methods of spending his money and the adventures, setbacks, and romances he experiences along the way make the novel a completely different story. Without giving away the book's ending, I will say that's different too, but equally satisfying.Basically, if you're hesitant about tackling the novel because you're afraid it's just an outdated version of a story you already know, don't be. Read the book and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Better than the movie By goosefish The 1985 movie was great, but Brewster's methods are far more diverse and humorous in the book. Notable highlights:-Brewster befriends a pair of muggers by insisting they steal everything, even the $300 they overlooked in his right pocket.-He hosts a luxury cruise for 50 to Europe, and the guests stage a mutiny to curb Brewster's inexplicable generosity.-An Arab sheik tries to steal Brewster's fiance in Egypt, but is shot in the head while absconding.A possible detractor: the book has far more dramatic content than the movie. This is not simply a comedic vehicle. It is thoroughly absorbing, nevertheless.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Brewster Millions, the book By Liz (pansyliz) Toombs George Barr McCutcheon wrote a book called Brewster's Million in 1902 under the name of Richard Greaves. It has been made into a movie multiple times. There is a 1985 movie with Richard Pryor as Brewster and his side kick was played by John Candy. The book is a 306 page story of how a person in the 1900's spends a million dollar inheritance so that he might receive an inheritance of multiple millions. The twist of families in disagreement with each other spurs this quagmire. The friends play the role of restraint due to the fact that part of the spending required Brewster to share that fact with no one. The other twist in the story is that Brewster must spend this money in a manner in which he will be a pauper, a man with no material wealth except the clothes on his back.If you like to dream of how you could spend that million so you can inherit more, this is your book to read. If you have friends who do and those who do not stand by you no matter what, this is a book to read to find how loyalty can pay off. If you have a Kindle and want a fun, though time period influenced read then this is a great book since it is free. This book is recommended.

He is a huge fan and was able to sound out the Viking names, since he already knew them. His little brothers, 3 and 4 years old, always ask him to read this to them. I had to help him through it his first time reading it, but he was on his own after that.
