A sensational, unexplained, 'miracle' occurs in full view of the crowd and television cameras at the Olympic swimming pool arena in London, while the following morning, a bemused, self-employed, entrepreneur arrives at work in Beirut to be confronted by the world's press concerning an incident he has no connection with and one he has never even heard of. The two actions combine to trigger a roller coaster series of events, which quickly threatens to bring down the British government and carries major implications for the world at large. The primary aim of this book is to make you laugh out loud, at least once, and in the process, inspire feelings of genuine sympathy for the protagonist's predicament. If you do find yourself laughing, there is a genuine chance you will really enjoy what happens and might even wish to recommend it to your friends. However, no laughing, and I will have failed – for which, I apologise, in advance, sincerely. Although, on the off chance you do not find it funny, there is still the possibility you will recommend it to your enemies. Seriously, I hope you enjoy it.

Very clever, witty and hilarious, with farcical chaotic moments akin to Tom Sharpe's Blot on the Landscape. My first fiction book for quite a few years and thoroughly enjoyed it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful, intriguing; and great for adults as well as older children. By SiberianIce This is a great addition to Survivors. I've been wondering more about Moon, and what Sweet did when she just up and gone for a pack in the first book. I was also curious what made Alpha so evil. Overall, if you are a fan of any/all of the characters or are just interested in their stories, this is a great buy. Both Alpha and Sweet were bullied, and I shouldn't say more. This is well-written and it was very interesting to learn more about these characters. I can't wait for the next Survivors book.

There were some words that were above his reading level, but I like that this challenged him yet he was still able to read the book. He's already reading it for the second time. If you liked the movie, you'll like the book.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Before seeing the movie, or after, read the book and have a nice conversation with your kids about emotions and how they work. By Jessica Higgins Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out takes you to a place that everyone knows but no one has ever seen, inside the human mind. All the emotions that run wild inside all of us and what happens when each different one takes control.I read this with my almost five year old. He is very advanced with reading and it was great for the two of us to enjoy together. We went back and forth, I would read some and then he would read. Overall it was not a problem for him to read, a few words here and there he needed help with but it was well written and not above his head. We read it before going to see the movie so he would have an idea what it was about. The story did a great job setting everything up and relaying the information in an appropriate way for the young audience. The chapters were short and not overwhelming. Each chapter was accompanied by illustrations of the emotions and characters along with pictures from the movie halfway through the book.Overall it was a great book and I enjoyed being able to talk to my son about the emotions and how we express them and can let them affect us in all different ways. Having a face to put with the emotions helped him understand what we are talking about when something is going on and how we can let the right emotion take the controls and steer us in the right direction.I highly recommend reading this book with your kids before seeing the movie, or after and talking with them.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. She really enjoyed the movie By J'Andra I bought this for my 7y.o daughter. She really enjoyed the movie. this book is a great novelization! My daughter enjoys reading this book and often takes it to bed with her.Be aware that if you are looking for a picture book, you may be disappointed. This book is a chapter book with only a few pictures in the center of the book.

Years have passed. Literally, six years have passed for the young boy who is finally of sufficient height to ride. And what a ride it will be. This intrepid father and son will form a bond that forever will live in the annals of family lore! The roller coaster, aptly named "Old Rickety" represents a Rite of Passage and the boy's entrance into all that is FUN. The question is will he survive the trip with his father -- of course, with this particular father, any trip has an extra degree or two of danger. Make no mistake, the boy's father means well. He knows exactly how excited his young son is about this challenge and wants only the best result. Its just that sometimes, or more accurately - most times, things don't go as planned. Not for this man. And certainly not for his long-suffering family. Enjoy the ride. And keep your arms inside the car at all times!

By j1948 This is my first reading of any of the writing works by Author Steve Odenthal. The very positive experience has left me with the desire to grasp onto more of his writing and keep reading, and keep laughing. The casual dialogue with which the author writes makes the reader feel as though you are in his presence and he is verbally retelling the experience to you with all candor of a true first-hand participant. Personally, I am frightened of all roller coasters, so my anxiety was at the surface prior to reading beyond the title. However, the storytelling unfolds with such ease that my own personal emotions were soon dismissed and I was open to experience the telling of this tale without any personal discrimination whatsoever. In a style reminiscent of Narrator Daniel Stern from the TV show Wonder Years, Steve Odenthal is a very comfortable story teller and does not force the story; rather, the story gently unfolds with a sense of unaware capture that the reader feels very soon. Similar to Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion, Steve Odenthal has a talent for setting the stage with words, and you find that as the story nears end, you really do not want it to end because the reading experience has been so enjoyable, believable, and you now feel you have a relationship with the storyteller and the story itself. The ride that the reader takes in reading, The Roller Coaster -- A Rite of Passage, is like a portal to a parallel universe, and you are mighty glad that you stepped through that portal and went on that storytelling ride. Pandora's Box of emotions is opened as you experience the feelings of the Father, and those of the young son. The descriptive vision created by the author's words makes you feel as though you are personally looking through the spaces of the sparsely constructed wooden slats of the coaster's floorboard; each jerking jolt, screeching halt, and vibrating battle against centrifugal force is palpable, and you nearly replace yourself with that of the young son, attempting to achieve your own rite of passage in this journey. The vivid description of the agitated woman seated behind them left little to the imagination as the author painted a picture of character annoyance yet tempered with humor. I don't believe I will ever look at a set of dentures again without thinking of this story and feeling the reactive laughter it invokes. Just when you think the young lad is worse for the journey, and the father is doomed by the boy's mother, a victory is claimed by the lad and the reader also claims this same joyful victory! Steve Odenthal has a style that is needed for today's reader. We need the good medicine in life that laughter provides, and Steve Odenthal generously provides it in a very believable style. If you are up for experiencing your own rite of passage, The Roller Coaster--A Rite of Passage, DELIVERS!Reviewed by: Alice M. Batzel, Published Playwright, Journalist, and Freelance Writer (www.alicembatzel.com) Reviewed 7/23/2015

By Amanda Felix The much anticipated continuation and further adventures of Michael Talbot has finally arrived and does not disappoint. Talbot is once again in the thick of it, fighting for his life as well as that of his wife Tracy (although she can hold her own quit well) and BT. Having managed to get back to earth with the help of the Stryvers whom he can barely stand to look at and trust even less, the three are making their way across country in an attempt to reunite with their son Travis who has been left in the care of Drababan. Tracy is more than a match for who and whatever they meet while BT, who is constantly railing against 'crazy crackers' has turned out to be one of Talbot's greatest allies and friend and constantly wonders who is crazier, Talbot or Tracy. Of course we all know the answer but it still makes for some hilarious scenes between the three of them. Even while in dire straights, Talbot is Talbot as he soundly dresses down a Geno( picture a Chihuahua snapping and growling at a pit bull and actually making it step back away in fear) BT calling out to Tracy(possible spoiler) "Tracy! Mike is picking on the aliens!" And you will get the picture of what is in store for you throughout the book. While the fighting is intense and draws you in, Talbot's propensity for speaking-before-thinking is at the heart of the story and wouldn't be a Talbot adventure without it. He even has a few talk sessions with the BIG MAN UPSTAIRS with mix results and not a few hilarious outcomes. Paul, in the meantime is fighting his own battles in space, both of conscious and life as he engages the Progerian battle cruiser on board a faltering Guardian. Beth is in her usual self centered bitch mode and while her role is small here, we can expect she will not be dismissed or go away easily. Drababon, Tony Talbot and Travis also find themselves in danger. But Dee has made a promise to Michael that he will keep and nothing or no one will stand in his way. There are also several references to the alternate realities of Michael Talbot which a TUFO/TALBOT fan will recognize. Even the brief appearance of a beloved character blends so well into the storyline we don't even think twice of the possibilities or probability of it all because in the Talbot universe(s) all things are possible. Once again I give kudos to Mark Tufo for taking what was once a trilogy and continued the further adventures of Michael Talbot. It can only get better (if that is possible). Besides the connection between IH series and Dystance: Winter's Rise is yet to be made and one that will be as highly anticipated as the ZF series and LF series.

I'v been in the Army since 18 and havent found a writer that throws in the military style of talking. Ive gotten more than a few of my guys reading his books and laughing while shaking thier heads. He continues with inventive way to have Talbot get out of impossible situations that he got him and others into. He brings in characters from other books and dimensions, I've read all of his books except Timothy and Reily. When a new book in one of his series comes out I read the entire series all over again.

His style of writing is a personal favorite of mine. This story is a continuation of the Indian Hill story. Humanity VS. Crocodile aliens VS. Spider aliens.. Great read. He leaves Easter eggs through the story about his other books. Damn fine stuff. Stay groovy.

The Radio is the first part of the loosely titled, 'The The Trilogy'. It can be read before or after The Page - also by M. Jonathan Lee. A comedy so black that you'd have to eat a lot of carrots to know whether George's adventures are actually visible. The Radio centres around the decline of the lovable, yet hapless George Poppleton, a middle-aged, henpecked father and husband who stumbles across an old transistor radio in his loft. His obsession with listening to the radio drives him on an unexpected journey, fuelled by the painful memories of the suicide of his only son many years before. Whilst his only daughter, Sam, and wife, Sheila, plan perhaps the most ill-fated wedding ever conceived, the radio transports George further and further away from reality. When a garlic baguette is used as a lethal weapon and the hogs finally take a stand and turn on the farmer who is about to roast them, nothing is likely to go as smoothly as the family may have hoped. The accidental return of Sam's ex-fiance, David, coupled with the endlessly drunk Auntie Lesley ensures that an almighty farce is just around the corner. The Radio ends with an unimaginable twist, when the family realise that things are not at all how they seemed. It is a story of what it means to be a family, the perception of loving and being loved, and what it means to be sane. It will appeal to anyone who enjoys family-based modern contemporary fiction with both poignancy and humour. Jonathan has been inspired by a number of novels, including Alex Garland's The Beach, and his writing is comparable to Mark Haddon, Nick Hornby and Joseph Connolly. Song Age Range: Although this is an early chapter book, the text is quite large and it's easy reading. The story is engaging for any bug lover though. 10 may be a little old for this book, I'd say a better age range is 5 to 8, depending on reading level. One of my kids was a very early reader and finding appropriate books was tough. If you have a very early reader, this is a good find.Story: Wow! A bug lover's dream come true! The story is about a bug loving boy named Max who knows a lot about them. An old tome and magnifying glass transport him to 'bug island' where there are bug friends, danger (but not too scary for a little one), and excitement - with a happy ending, of course. The writing is age appropriate but it's not sloppy and doesn't 'talk down' to the readers. I think this series will be well-loved.Illustrations: I have a pre-readers copy, so most are "not final" sketches. I can't say I care a lot for the pictures that appear to be ready as Max's head always looks contorted in them. Maybe it's a contemporary style? I'm not an artist. This story is perfect for stoking the imagination of bug lover's everywhere! While great for early readers, this would also be a fun bedtime book for younger kids to read with mom or dad.

By Pie Grrrl I know that this book is geared toward BOYS but "Hey!", I'm a woman who has LOVED "Bugs" her entire life and that's going back many, many decades! I have spent hundreds of hours on my tummy watching ants, pill-bugs, caterpillars munching leaves, and billions of spider babies tumble from their cloud-like egg casing. And I can say with a very clear conscience, that I've never knowing killed an insect, but instead, scooping up any vagabond bugs inside the house with a jelly jar and gently releasing them back into their kingdom. So, I was excited to preview and read a Pro-Bug book that didn't vilify insects but celebrated them, instead. And it does, gloriously so! The book introduces the reader to the wonderful world of "Arthropods: An animal with it's skeleton on the outside of it's body." I also like that the author used the correct word "insects" and not the overused and usually inaccurate "bug" word to describe arthropods. This is the story-line: Max, a young boy, is gifted an ancient book, "The Complete Encyclopedia of Arthropod" (along with an enclosed magical magnifying lens) by his Mum. She works at an auction house and this book was found at an old estate. Max immediately runs to his room to peruse the book, and upon using the magical magnifier to look at an island on a 2-page map, is immediately whisked to Bug Island and is reduced to the size of a bug! He becomes an ally to the Bug Nation that is being threatened by the adjacent Lizard Island when an erupting volcano creates a new land bridge between the two islands. This is a 3-part series and "The Lizard Wars" is book #1. It ends with a satisfactory ending of the Bugs winning THIS battle against the invading lizards but there is a mild cliff hanger as the lead lizard, General Komodo, tries to find a way to cross the river that aided in the bugs escape. This is what I liked about the book:1) PRO-Insect! Yeah!2) Max is African American. Yeah!3) Correct use of words and good description of insects.4) Fast paced and a very easy read. This is what I did NOT like about the book:1) This is a PRO-bug book but a very, very ANTI-Amphibian book! Why?????? It seems odd that this series is wonderful at teaching children to enjoy the wonders of insects yet it paints tree frogs, toads, geckos and lizards in a horrid light! I don't understand the prejudice, especially if you are trying to teach young children that ALL of the living beings in the world have their own special place and should be appreciated.I would much rather have had the "enemy" be the Volcano or some other natural disaster and the entire island population of lizards, frogs, scorpions and beetles join forces to escape the natural disaster.2) The illustrations. Ugh. I do realize that this is a preview copy and that most of the renderings were just sketches, which I actually enjoyed viewing more than the "finished art" in the first couple of plates. I just didn't enjoy the literal 'perspective' of the drawings, which made Max's face look distorted and just plain "weird", with a lop-side face and one eye constantly larger than the next one. Also, the 'bugs' were made to look like Transformers, which I also felt was "too much". I've read and previewed three other illustrated children's books in the past week and although each had a unique style of illustration, I didn't have this "meh" reaction to how they chose to depict their characters. As an example: in the first illustration, Max's hand is over his terrarium, tossing in Oak Leaves to his Walking Sticks. The way the hand is drawn, it looks as if he has a Baseball in his hand rather than an open fist. Quite odd.3) As I stated in my opening sentence, I'm a GIRL who LOVES bugs! I could only hope that a Bug-Loving Girl is added to the story-line so that it doesn't ostracize 50% of the "Human Bean" population. I have a female god-child that I read these books to and I'd love her to be included in the adventures. On a neutral note: there is one mildly confusing sentence on Page 29: "The scorpion charged around the lizard as it retreated, holding a clawed foot to its injured snout." It is the LIZARD who's injured, not the scorpion! It would be a better read if the sentence was written, "While the lizard was holding a clawed foot to it's injured snout, the scorpion charged around it to hastily retreat."Bottom Line: Great story, fast read, PRO-bug. Now, we just need a PRO-amphibian/Female friend aspect added to it and it would be perfect for both genders.

By Young Mensan BookParade I loved this book so much, I read it four times in two days! This is an adventure story of a boy called Max, who suddenly finds himself in Bug Island. He fights the lizards on the side of the bugs in The Lizard War. The bugs are fighting a battle against their predators, the amphibians and reptiles.I really loved the character Spike, the scorpion. He is funny and very brave too. He stands up to a scary lizard that is several times his size in the beginning of the book. In the later part of the book, Spike takes charge and faces General Komodo. Those were my favorite parts of the book. I liked all the other main characters in the book too – they were all really fun!The illustrations in this book are okay. I did not really like how the bugs and Max are drawn. The eyes of the bugs make them look scary and weird! I really wish Max and the bugs were drawn to look a little friendlier. The lizards are drawn just fine – they look evil and scary, which is how they should be.The story itself is great! I love the adventures Max has, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series “Battle Bugs – The Spider Seige”!Reviewed by Dhruv K. age 6, North Texas Mensa

In 1815, a Vermont businessman ships a giant cheese to Washington, D.C. to honor America’s greatest military hero, Tennessee’s General Andrew Jackson. The cheese vanishes. The government receives a ransom note. Payment isn’t an option. If news of the cheese’s disappearance becomes public, north and south will blame each other for the insult. A nation still divided after three years of war could split apart. Over a commemorative cheese? Cassius Lightner, Chief Clerk of the tiny U.S. Patent Office, is skeptical. He’s also shocked when his boss assigns him to find the cheese. Luckily, his unconventional English fiancée, Amanda Crofton, is happy to help. Is the dead body behind the French embassy the key? Cassius and Amanda scramble to discover the truth before political hell breaks loose. “With punchy wit and clever turns of phrase, Giesser fills his leads with modern vivacity and tenacity that makes the unfurling of the mystery of the missing cheese a pleasure to witness. … In this sense, the book’s wordplay is reminiscent of the works of P.G. Wodehouse, although Giesser meanders into far darker and more salacious territory. … As a work of darkly comic historical fiction, it’s a resounding success.” -- Kirkus Reviews

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A cheesy book By carolyn c porter I don't know what I expected this book to be like. I suppose the title should have warned me of its tone - it varies between farcical and ridiculous.....a cat leading Cass to an important clue, a body preserved in a barrel of rum, Amanda la-ti-da about Cass' visits to the "boarding house", the cheese hidden in a creek, all this interspersed in the unnecessarily-complicated plot. I think I expected it to be tongue-in-cheek. I did not expect to strangle on it. It doesn't help that the narrative is told by two different persons, the reader left to determine which person is speaking. I would not recommend it.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A highly entertaining historical spoof By Happy House Frau Mr. Giesser out does himself in the historically based Cheese of Some Importance. A well-known playwright and producer, Mr. Giesser is renown for his dry sense of humor and wildly witty repartee. Who else could have imagined such a bizarre tale involving the abduction of an absurdly large cheese -- that seems to hold the prospect of undoing the Union? I snickered my way through the many surprising twists and turns of the novel all the way to the last tantalizing revelation. Mr. Giesser's colorful descriptions and sassy dialog not only paint a vivid picture of the life and thinking of the time, but set the stage (no pun intended) for a thoroughly entertaining tale of conspiracy, patriotism, propriety (or lack thereof) and murder.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Hijinks, Snappy Repartee and Mayhem in Washington D.C., circa 1815 By Pop Bop So, take a dapper, clever, slightly bemused young man and pair him with a bright young English widow with a penchant for tossing off vaguely salacious double entendres and what do you have. Steed and Mrs. Peel from the original "Avengers"? Yes. But now place those two in the humid, swampy backwater that is the U.S. Capital in 1815. Put them in search of a stolen 1,250 pound wheel of cheese, (the theft of which could give rise to a political scandal mighty enough to fracture the fledgling U.S. of A.). If you were to do such a thing you would get this entertaining book.We start a bit slowly, as our hero narrator, Cassius Lightner, appears to enjoy taking the long way around when it comes to telling a story. The pace freshens when we realize that alternate chapters will be related by Mrs. Amanda Crofton, who is a much more witty, incisive and blunt teller of tales. Between the story itself, the cross-talk between the two leads, the amusing differences in their recountings of the same events, and the rich collection of supporting characters, this qualifies as an entertaining romp.Odd as it may sound, this book appears to qualify as an "historical mystery". Our Nick and Nora Charles heroes follow the clues, discover the occasional body, and unwind a conspiracy even as they toss off bon mots. Amazingly, the 1815 District of Columbia setting works. The author captures the feel of a great capital city rising from the swamp and the muddy lanes. The era was loaded with fascinating political figures, and they flit through the story. The author has mixed together a modern sensibility and a vaguely old-fashioned writing and speaking style in order to capture the period without wearying the reader, and I felt that it worked. So, an interesting mystery, an amusing couple, a well developed historical feel, snappy dialogue and a few chuckles. I can't ask for much more than that. (Please note that I found this book while browsing kindleunlimited freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

By OJCast Reading, participating in, watching and being a part of this series develop has been one long, extended literary orgasm and the crashing, mind bending finale of Episode 6 was the grandaddy final, lose control, toe curling one of them all!Brandon Shire's masterful writing went completely out of control in the final episode, tying the whole experience up in one neat, over the top, sexy, action packed book. The last chapter was one long, open mouthed moment where I went all Holy Cow, Batman! that left me panting for more. The way Mr. Shire brings everything together is simply brilliant. Sid's connection to the Marn family, Marion's finally coming out of the shadows, Drake and Sweeny!, Jack's final revenge, Jack and Sid's finally getting their moment, what a moment! YES!... and... wait for it... Shane!!!!Sexy, mysterious, powerful Shane is begging for a sequel. Hell, this whole serial is begging for more, although perhaps not as serial, but as a series of books. There's enough material here for several more books. The characters are so delicious and thoroughly well developed that this is going into a special category of mine that only a few books go into - the 'to be re-read' category.I'll treasure this for years to come! Bravo, Mr. Shire. Take a well deserved bow.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. And I still want more!!! By Shirley Quinones Sid Rivers is an ambitious lawyer who will stop at nothing to be successful. Being wealthy and powerful is all he's about and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. Then he meets Jack Brown. The sexy thug has caught Sid's eye but the last thing he needs at the moment is a distraction.Jack Brown is out for revenge and he's determined to get it regardless of who stands in his path. Not even the arrogant, sexy lawyer that pushes all his buttons will lead him astray.Oh what a wicked web of lies, deception, power and corruption does Mr. Brandon Shire weave! With Episode Six being the last one of the season you can expect it will be as fantastic as the others. In Episode Six, Jack finally finds some closure and Sid has the power he always wanted. He has achieved what he set out to do but not in the manner he set out to do it. Now he must try to salvage what he can while coming to terms with how grave and real the danger is--not only to himself but for Jack too. It was a bittersweet conclusion for Season One, but I don't think I would've ended it any other way. Only time will tell what's in store for these wicked men! Some will say I'm biased since I consider Mr. Shire to be one of my favorite authors, but I assure you I am not. In my experience not every author can take an idea, roll with it and deliver a fantastic story while still taking into consideration the readers' input. Add to that the fact that the cast of characters (and believe me there are quite a few!) were all intriguing in their own right, complex and developed as the story continued on.Personally, it was the mix of characters and riveting storyline that keep me reading all through the night. The constant twists and turns, the characters that I loved to hate and the anticipation of what the hell was going to happen next had me in a fit of grunts, swearing and OH MY GAWDs! I am certainly looking forward to the next season. There MUST be a next season!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant ending to the first season, wow By Spifette The opening scene and we have anger, confusion, and one of the main story elements coming full circle. Wow. Jack and Sid, what the hell is in store for you now??And the hits just keep on comin’…~ * ~ ”I haven’t finished destroying him yet,” Sid remarked, still skeptical of her pronouncement despite the flare of adrenaline suddenly blazing through his brain. ~ * ~Shire’s writing. That’s it right there. Who comes up with these things, these single-sentence shots that give you everything you need to know about what a character is feeling in that moment. I shouldn’t be surprised at how delicious it is, but I am. And I’m thrilled. And he had me sitting in my living room with my mouth hanging open from shock at the revelations that continued to rain down. Holy. CRAP.Just as you’d expect, we get nearly the entire cast of characters: Sid and Jack, Sweeny and Drake, Lori, Shane, Manard, Cheryl (I knew something was going on with her!!), Ms Marion, and the rest. Nearly every one of these characters’ roles gets upended, tossing everything deeper into chaos. Further, none of these people are superheroes. They’re imperfect, riddled with grey areas, and questionable morals. The redeeming factor some of them possess is the reason behind their individual motivations informing their less than stellar decision making skills. One of my favorite things about this series is the friendship between Drake and Jack. Everything is known, no secrets, nothing of any consequence really. Their relationship impacts the other connections between the characters, namely that between Jack and Sid. Though, Jack does play his fair share of bit parts in some of the others. This story is non-stop in its intensity, constantly moving pieces, and the worry I felt about these characters that forced me to care about their morally questionable patooties. Toss Shane into the mix and he somehow makes all of the close calls, muck ups, and twists feel insignificant compared to what might be hiding behind that lopsided grin of his. **side eyes** Who are you really, Shane, eh?This conclusion to Season One of this series is the literary equivalent of mainlining adrenaline.I loved every moment of it.I’ll be re-reading this entire series.I want more.* Originally reviewed for Prism Book Alliance

"Ashley’s High Five For Daddy" is a beautifully illustrated picture book that gently introduces young readers to the process military families experience on the return of their loved one from deployment. The star of the story “Ashley” is a feisty, fun, and adventurous. She adores her dad, and is having some trouble understanding why he has returned home a little changed from how she remembers him. Saulsby’s story nicely demonstrates the need for adults to prepare themselves and their children for the possibility that the returning service member may need some space and time as they are reintroduced into the family.

In addition to being a Marine, I am the daughter of a retired Marine and former wife of a Marine who was in combat during the Gulf War. I remember when my husband came home having to explain to my boys, who were around 4 and 7 at that time, why their dad occasionally had difficulty being around crowds and a lot of noise. I wish I had this book back then; it would have made it much easier to explain to my young sons. Thank you, Pam, for offering such an accurate, thoughtful book for children. High five!CJ ScarletAuthor, Neptune's Gift: Discovering Your Inner Ocean

By TopFlyte While "Ashley's High Five for Daddy" is written with our military in mind, I found that the book can help any parent with a young child to have a better understanding of a parent who's dealing with a stressful situation. Children know when parents are not in a good mood or when something is not "quite right." "Ashley's High Five for Daddy" is a reminder that the kids will be all right as long as they're given the tools to understand that they're still loved and important in their parent's/parents' life/lives. Ms. Saulsby wrote an insightful, easy to read book that should be on every child's book-shelf. This book matters!!

I am certain many families have experienced the same wonderful, and yet, scary feelings about their returning Soldier’s behavior. Although, “Ashley’s High Five for Daddy,” is about a serious subject, it is such a joyful story. You can feel the love and excitement the family and neighbors have for their Soldier and that he is happy to be home. I recommend this book as a nice story for both the child and family of the returning Solider.

Personal vendettas, hidden treasure, and a monkey named Carl will send bounty hunter Stephanie Plum on her most explosive adventure yet.

The Crime: Armed robbery to the tune of nine million dollars

Dom Rizzi robbed a bank, stashed the money, and did the time. His family couldn't be more proud. He always was the smart one.

The Cousin: Joe Morelli

Joe Morelli, Dom Rizzi, and Dom's sister, Loretta, are cousins. Morelli is a cop, Rizzi robs banks, and Loretta is a single mother waiting tables at the firehouse. The all-American family.

The Complications: Murder, kidnapping, destruction of personal property, and acid reflux

Less than a week after Dom's release from prison, Joe Morelli has shadowy figures breaking into his house and dying in his basement. He's getting threatening messages, Loretta is kidnapped, and Dom is missing.

The Catastrophe: Moonman

Morelli hires Walter "Mooner" Dunphy, stoner and "inventor" turned crime fighter, to protect his house. Morelli can't afford a lot on a cop's salary, and Mooner will work for potatoes.

The Cupcake: Stephanie Plum

Stephanie and Morelli have a long-standing relationship that involves sex, affection, and driving each other nuts. She's a bond enforcement agent with more luck than talent, and she's involved in this bank-robbery-gone-bad disaster from day one.

The Crisis: A favor for Ranger

Security expert Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, has a job for Stephanie that will involve night work. Morelli has his own ideas regarding Stephanie's evening activities.

The Conclusion: Only the fearless should listen to Fourteen.

Thrills, chills, and incontinence may result.

What I am going to do is say goodbye to one of my all time favorite series. The last couple of books have been horribly silly and ridiculous; this one was no exception. The characters I once loved and looked forward all year to hearing from are barely visible. The little quirks that used to make them unique and funny are now taking over their entire persona making them slightly moronic. The dialogue that used to be naturally witty seems forced and contrived. Jokes, gags and antics that once made me laugh have been recycled and reused so much, it's sad.No one in this series is growing or getting anywhere, they are all just going in circles. I want Stephanie to get better at the bounty hunter thing; I want her to grow up. I don't want her or Ranger or Joe to change, but after so many years you expect SOMETHING of substance to happen.I barely got through this book. Janet has provided hours of entertainment for me in the past with this series and for that I will always be grateful. But I can't for the life of me see myself shelling out the big bucks for these hardcover books filled with drivel anymore.I hope that Janet rethinks what she has been doing with this series lately and gives it a much needed overhaul. The last couple of books have seemed rushed and phoned in, a huge departure from the earlier books in the series. My days of rushing to the bookstore on release dates are over. When book 15 comes out I will wait to read reviews, first. If the reviews make the book look promising, maybe I will read it. But from where I sit now, I don't see me opening another `new' Plum adventure. I will reread the older and much better books in the series if I need a Plum fix.Cherise Everhard, June 2008

By Happiness is reading After plunking down some hard earned cash on this year's installment of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, I raced home to read. What the? Is there a book return policy? What a waste. If you love Plum for the edgy writing, great wit, fantastic plot, and wonderful characters, forget Fearless Fourteen. Plum has always been more than just a breezy, silly, summer read for me.I am invested in the lives of these characters. What I got this year is slapstick, unresolved sub plots, villains with no names, subject matter bordering on the distasteful, recycled plots and my favorite characters very out of character. I even recognized things said by one character in past books, now being uttered by a different character in this book. Bizzare. No sense rehashing the pitiful storyline. What storyline? This book reads like a major hit on all those that I have grown to love. Morelli's character takes a nosedive as a belching, inept detective with a dead body in his basement and he`s more concerned about the concrete floor or playing softball with his cronies. Stephanie is no longer the gutsy, edgy woman that she was in past books but rather either now babysitting some teenager or flouncing around Trenton in some idiotic reality Bounty Hunter fiasco. Grandma Mazur, dressed in Goth - a master gamer? Lula reduced to sneaky tricks and turning into Bridezilla? Tank fainting and babbling? Mrs. Plum downing a glass of whiskey? And where the heck was Ranger? Reduced to a mere side character?Speaking of unresolved, and there is a lot unresolved.....like, whose toes were they, anyway? This book reads like a bad episode of the Three Stooges. The World of Plum in the Twilight Zone. Unrecognizable. A bad dream.I should have saved my money. Waited to borrow the library copy. Or better yet, not have read it at all.Sadly, I think it is time to say goodbye to Janet Evanovich and Plum.Gee, I wish I could get my money back on this one. Are you sure there isn't a better return policy on a really bad book?

I thought much of it was amusing and there was at least one good belly-laugh (where I had tears rolling down my cheeks). But overall, I think Fearless Fourteen is a bit of a stretch--even for Stephanie Plum.Plum is a bounty hunter from Trenton, NJ and as usual, her life is utter chaos. She ends up babysitting the teenaged son of a skip, Zook. Zook is addicted to an interactive Internet game called Minionfire. He also likes to spray paint everything. Ranger (a fellow bounty hunter and owner of a security firm) hires Stephanie to help babysit an aging singer, Brenda, who acts like a diva and is inclined to get into trouble. Plum also finds herself in the middle of a 10-year-old $9 million unsolved bank robbery, and it appears that the money might be somewhere in boyfriend Joe Morelli's house. Brenda decides to start a reality show and follows Plum around as she's trying to do her job. And when things couldn't get any worse, Lula is engaged to boyfriend, Tank, and is driving Plum crazy with wedding plans. All of these situations play out with the usual Evanovich zaniness. Unfortunately, I think there was just way too much going on here--especially toward the end.Evanovich is skillful at describing life in Trenton. Of a fast-food restaurant, she writes "Cluck-in-a-Bucket is a zoo on Sunday. It's the lunch of choice for the lazy, the fat, the salt-starved, the emotionally injured, the families on budgets, the cholesterol-deprived and the remaining ten percent of the population who just want a piece of chicken." My favorite character (next to Plum) is Lula, "former `ho, turned bonds office file clerk and wheelman. She's a plus-size black woman who likes to squash herself into too small clothes featuring animal print and spandex. Lula's cup runneth over from head to toe." I'm glad that Evanovich has turned Lula into a regular.Although I don't think this is Evanovich's best Plum book, I still enjoyed reading the exploits of Stephanie. When I need a break from serious female detectives and private investigators including Kinsey Millhone, Sharon McCone, Nevada Barr, Kathy Mallory and Temperance Brennan, reading about Stephanie and Lula is like watching "Lucy and Ethel" on television.
