Beauty can belie the evil underneath. The beauty of the Shenandoah Valley hides sinister individuals and protects them from facing justice. The Valley people found it easy to turn their back on the evil, as long as it didn’t touch home. When it touched the life of a Texas Ranger, justice comes and it is blind.

Wagner Page-turning action as the Ranger tangles with the close-knit families of the Shenandoah valley and finds nothing is tighter than family loyalty, even when members of the family are sadistic killers. Great characters who make the Hatfields and McCoys somewhat tame by comparison. Far more than moonshiners, these are killers without remorse who even find excuses to kill their own children. And they must be stopped. Well worth the time.

A novel of the improbable friendship that arises between a Nazi officer and a Jewish chessplayer in AuschwitzSS Obersturmfuhrer Paul Meissner arrives in Auschwitz from the Russian front wounded and fit only for administrative duty. His most pressing task is to improve camp morale and he establishes a chess club, and allows officers and enlisted men to gamble on the games. Soon Meissner learns that chess is also played among the prisoners, and there are rumors of an unbeatable Jew known as "the Watchmaker." Meissner's superiors begin to demand that he demonstrate German superiority by pitting this undefeated Jew against the best Nazi players. Meissner finds Emil Clément, the Watchmaker, and a curious relationship arises between them. As more and more games are played, the stakes rise, and the two men find their fates deeply entwined.Twenty years later, the two meet again in Amsterdam-Meissner has become a bishop, and Emil is playing in an international chess tournament. Having lost his family in the horrors of the death camps, Emil wants nothing to do with the ex-Nazi officer despite their history, but Meissner is persistent. "What I hope," he tells Emil, "is that I can help you to understand that the power of forgiveness will bring healing." As both men search for a modicum of peace, they recall a gripping tale of survival and trust.A suspenseful meditation on understanding and guilt, John Donoghue's The Death's Head Chess Club is a bold debut and a rich portrait of a surprising friendship.

SS Obersturmfuhrer Paul Meissner arrives in Auschwitz, having been injured in Russia. In charge of overseeing satellite industrial labour camps, he is ordered to improve morale and, bizarrely, is told that SS officers should take an interest in culture. Meissner’s answer is to start a chess club. Competition becomes fierce between the officers and the men, but then a suggestion occurs which causes the camp hierarchy to feel extremely unsettled. Rumours abound in the camp about a Jewish chess player who is unbeatable and this challenges Nazi ideology. Emil Clement has arrived at Auschwitz with his wife, mother and two young sons. Now he has no idea whether they are alive or dead, but his love of chess gives him a sense of hope. However, playing chess with the enemy is quite another prospect, when life and death hinges on the outcome of a game. The storyline in this novel alternates between events during the war and a 1962 chess tournament in Amsterdam, where Emil Clement is playing. When he is drawn against Wilhelm Schweninger, an ex member of the Nazi party, who worked in the Ministry of Propaganda during the war, those organising the tournament are concerned. Clement, now living in Israel, says there is no such thing as a good German, while Schweninger is unrepentant about his time as a National Socialist. Events are changed when a bishop approaches Clement and he realises that the man was once known to him, long ago, in Auschwitz. Together, the bishop, Clement and Schweninger, rediscover their past and come to terms with the long road which has left them stranded in a world they cannot come to terms with. This book explores the guilt of the perpetrator, as well as the guilt of the survivor and looks at a most unlikely friendship between men who look upon themselves as enemies. Mostly, though, it is just a very well imagined – and original – story about a chess game held in incredible circumstances; when a Jewish prisoner is forced to confront the SS and three men are forced to confront their pasts. An excellent read, wonderfully realised and with interesting characters, this would be an ideal book for reading groups, with lots of themes to discuss. This is an impressive debut and I look forward to reading more from this talented author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A really good story By Suze Lavender It's 1962 and there's an important chess tournament in Amsterdam. In the first round Emil Clément has to play against Wilhelm Schweninger. Wilhelm Schweninger is a German who worked for the Ministry of Propaganda during the Second World War. Emil Clément is a survivor of Auschwitz. The Frenchman's life was saved because of playing chess. The two have a mutual history and are linked by Paul Meissner who is also in Amsterdam at the time of the tournament. He thinks they have unfinished business together and he tries to convince Emil to listen to him. Meissner is the person who has made sure Emil's life was spared and they have a story to tell. He's now a priest who tries to do good. The three men keep meeting each other and slowly their history is being revealed.Emil's name in Auschwitz is The Watchmaker. Because of his repair work he earns himself a couple of privileges which he always shares with a friend. When Meissner introduces chess to improve the morals of the officers in the camp he doesn't know yet that among the Jewish prisoners there's an unbeatable player. To prove that Jews are inferior some of the Germans want him to play chess against their German champions. The stakes are getting higher and higher and Emil is just a pawn in the game, someone who doesn't have a say and who has to play to save his own life and the lives of others. The Death's Head Chess Club is a story about a Jewish man who was deported to Auschwitz and went through something too terrible for words. Even though Emile manages to keep his life he loses everything else. He loses his family and everything he holds dear. In 1962 he's still a very broken man. I found it unbelievably hard to read about the horrors in the camp, so it took me some time to finish this book as I could only manage a couple of chapters at a time. Of course this isn't the first WWII book I've read, but every time I read about Auschwitz it shocks me to the core. There's a lot of information about the camp itself and about the nauseating things that were being done to the prisoners, especially the Jews. I think there's a good explanation of the hierarchy of the camp which made the story more understandable and which also made it come to life.I doubted if I would review this book for a very long time. I think John Donoghue has written a very good story and he's definitely a great writer. I had issues with the character of Meissner, who worked in Auschwitz at the end of the war. He's supposed to feel terrible because of the things that happened there and he tries to atone for what he was a part of. I kept feeling conflicted about his character, especially because Emile seems to see him as a friend towards the end of the story. For me that was too quick and also maybe a bridge too far. Because I felt so conflicted and because I didn't like certain aspects, for me this book is also a success. It made me think and it keeps making me think. I try to form an unbiased opinion, but what is the correct way to look at things in this situation? The moral questions that are arising and inner discussions I keep having with myself are turning a really good story into something great. This novel made me contemplate cruelty, the horrors of war, forgiveness, being the better person and plenty of other things. If you're prepared to feel conflicted and to read a good story that will tear you apart inside, then you should pick up this book.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. "In Auschwitz, the good are punished, the evil flourish...." By E. Bukowsky In "The Death's Head Chess Club," by John Donoghue, the Nazis send Frenchman Emil Clément to Auschwitz, where he toils as a slave laborer. Before the war, Emil had a loving wife and two young sons. In 1944, when the book opens, he is a starving and exhausted concentration camp inmate, whose only comfort is chess. Emil's mystical ability to come up with consistently winning chess strategies makes him a formidable opponent. When his sadistic Nazi captors get wind of his prowess, they decide that Clément, a Jew, must be put in his place. In Auschwitz, those who manage to stay alive barely subsist on a minuscule number of calories per day. They are emaciated, freezing, and fully aware that they are living on borrowed time. The characters include SS-Obersturmführer Paul Meissner, who is assigned to keep the factories in Auschwitz running efficiently; chess champion Wilhelm Schweninger, an employee of the Ministry of Propaganda; the villainous Oberscharführer Klaus Hustek, a scheming member of the Gestapo; and Meissner's aide, Ernst Eidenmüller, who is a clever opportunist. All of these and others will have a hand in determining whether Emil will survive or perish. This ambitious and complex work of fiction moves back and forth between the 1930s, 1940s, and 1960s. These shifts are unsettling, the narrative is drawn-out and talky, and the story oversimplifies several serious questions: Should a German who regrets his participation in the oppression and extermination of Jews during the Holocaust seek forgiveness from those he has wronged? In turn, should the victims feel obligated to grant absolution to those who helped torture and murder their compatriots? Several scenes are powerful and poignant and the descriptive writing is generally vivid and evocative. However, "The Death's Head Chess Club," although readable and suspenseful, is short on substance, and therefore earns only a marginal recommendation.

What happens when a mother divorces her abusive husband? “Motherless America: Confronting Welfare’s Fatherhood Custody Program” six memoir chapters answer the question in a raw tale of corruption and cover-up. Three protagonists, a lawyer, a psychologist and a judge, collude to eliminate mother from the children’s lives by calling her mentally ill, jailing, depriving her of financial resources and the ability to educate and improve herself. Under dire circumstances, Doreen plows forward, learns the law, only to discover and investigate the government program that funds father’s abuse. Six memoir chapters humanize by using real life to demonstrate problems, showing how policy affects lives. It is not common knowledge that our government finances a family court industry that mandates abusive fathers over protecting women and children. Motherless America shines a light on a government program designed to give fathers control of children by way of family court. Six memoir chapters with four research chapters that inform readers of the nature of abuse and how it is processed by the family court industry; who invented the government program to make sure men control the family even after divorce; occupations that administer the program; and government funding and program design. The book concludes with a chapter that lists problems and offers solutions.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Lucrative Industry of Custody By Sam Vaknin I am a voracious reader, but this is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is comprised of three parts: a harrowing personal story, a summary of state of the art research, and a manifesto. The author claims, increasingly more persuasively, that "the system" (courts, evaluators, guardians, legislators) is skewed against the victims of abuse (mothers, in most cases) when it comes to custody. She is far from alone in making such allegations, but she has invested an inordinate amount of resources into mapping the anatomy of the Kafkaesque processes and instutions that women are sujected to as they are being pathologized and marginalized in the wake of an acrimonious divorce from an abuser or offender. At the end, they frequently lose their homes, children, livelihood, and even freedom. A blood-curdling read and a must for survivors of abuse, divorce attorneys, social workers, therapists, evaluators, guardians, and everyone else in this lucrative mega industry of the disintegrating American family. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited"

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. that the probate court system favors mothers over fathers and that good mothers do not lose custody of their children By Amazon Customer Doreen's book has exposed one of the most tragically false myths that prevail in American society today: that the probate court system favors mothers over fathers and that good mothers do not lose custody of their children. In cases where there is a conflict between a mother and father over custody, courts are actually more likely to award custody to the father than the mother. If the father is abusive, he is more likely to get custody. Mothers go into court with the reasonable and common sense assumption that the children will be given to the parent who takes the best care of the child. Custody should go to the parent who helps with the homework, who goes to the parent-teacher conferences, who takes care of the children when they are sick, who takes them to their doctor appointments, who facilitates the children's social and extra-curricular activities, who isn't violent or drug-addicted, or a criminal, who doesn't physically, emotionally or sexually abuse the children. In fact, mothers find that no matter how good of a job they did taking care of their children, the courts will still give custody to the father. Some of these fathers who get custody are ex-convicts, domestic abusers, and pedophiles. Courts do this because they have a cult mentality that assumes that the right of a father to have access to his children is more important than the right of the child to be safe and well-cared for. They use a theory called "parental alienation syndrome", which was created by a known pedophile, to justify awarding custody to fathers whose children have reported sexual abuse. In many cases, once the father gets custody, the mother is prohibited from any contact with the child until the child is 18. This phenomenon is not just the result of isolated or ignorant judges who are misinformed about the needs of children. If fact, the federal government, through "fatherhood funding", provides financial incentives to probate courts to increase the number of fathers who have custody of their children. This "fatherhood funding" is unconstitutional, as it favors one gender over another and it needs to be stopped. Thank you Doreen for connecting the dots and explaining why these strange things have been happening in probate court and why it matters so much to women and children.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The truth is the court favors the abuser. Parents ... By MythBuster The truth is the court favors the abuser. Parents will not stop this system until we realize it is not gender based but is based on the disposition of the most dysfunctional parent. I am weary of anyone attempting to convince people of a gender of race basis in the criminal fame court.

It has helped me to evaluate and create some wonderful new possibilities.” – Stephen Pauley, CEO of Your Business Matters Ltd."As modern science moves closer to metaphysics at ever-increasing speeds, Marlise Karlin has not only utilized the best of scientific technology, she has combined that with ancient healing/wisdom teachings drawn from both Eastern and Western tradition. The protocol she offers readers grew out of her own experience healing from severe emotional and physical challenges. Once she had discovered for herself just how powerful the connection to what she calls infinite intelligence is, she began creating this laymen-friendly system for using that energy to make life altering changes. At the heart of the SOS system are audio recordings (included in several formats with the book) which move the conscious teachings into the realm of super-awareness, opening the door for profound healing of mind, body, and spirit. Let your [readers] know that even if they have tried guided meditation, affirmations, and energy healing in the past, they will find that this system takes them to a new level of consciousness — quickly, easily, and without the sometimes confusing trappings that many other systems include." --Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insight

By lany2015 I've done The Simplicity of Stillness Method and is unlike any other meditation technology I've ever experienced. I'm a very anxious person and have difficulties quieting my mind. My biggest struggle with practicing meditation is that my mind doesn't shut off. The Simplicity of Stillness has been the only meditation system that I've been able to do and my mind doesn't have to be still. Even hours after I do a recording, I still feel calm and energized ready to take on anything that life may bring. It is a great book and highly recommend it to anyone who has trouble meditating and/or is too busy to meditate to give the SOS method a chance. It will change your life. It certainly has mine.

A Vintage Shorts “Short Story Month” Original SelectionIn this warm, intelligently observed novella, Isabel Dalhousie, Alexander McCall Smith's wonderful heroine, learns valuable lessons about inviting the past (and everyone in it) back into your life. Isabel Dalhousie--philosopher, mother and friend--has generously agreed to host the opening dinner for her school reunion weekend. Twenty-five former classmates will descend upon her home, bringing with them new names, new looks, and old reputations. While some will see the reunion as an opportunity to forge new friendships and reaffirm old ones, others aren't interested in changing their minds about the past. One particular classmate, Barbara Grant, was known as an especially mean girl who bullied the others relentlessly. As hostess, Isabel feels compelled to help her guests on the path toward reconciliation and forgiveness, but bitter feelings and long-held secrets threaten to derail her efforts entirely. With her trademark insight and compassion, Isabel Dalhousie may find a way to navigate these treacherous waters. An eBook short.

It's not full-blown, but it is lovely, as they all are...more for fans than for the uninitiated By Joanne I love Isabel and Jamie almost as much as I love Bertie et. al., Edinburgh, and Botswana, so this short story was a treat, but I am waiting for the next full-blown entry to this series and to all of the others that AMS has created for us. This sweet author has provided us with worlds and characters to love. They help us to remember what kindness and caring are; they help us to care about the people in our daily lives while giving us a wee break from them; they help us to be our better selves, if only for an hour or a day.In this story, Isabel does not fully solve a mystery (as she usually does), and Jamie does not have to remind her to stay out of the lives of others (as he usually does). He simply teases her, briefly, for her tendency to imagine, and she, for the first time in the years that her readers have known her, allows uncertainty to be an acceptable end to wondering. This "short original" is a must-read for all AMS fans, but for those of you who do not know the series or the author, it may be disappointing. Please do not allow this book to be your introduction to AMS. Start any of the series from the first book and become an intimate of the world created by this always-humane author.

Another delightful dose of Dalhousie feelgood By Cloggie Downunder “…class reunions should not be marred by feelings of jealousy or triumph; should not be, yes, but she suspected that they often were. Class reunions were about curiosity; about satisfaction at the avoidance of the mistakes of one’s contemporaries, now revealed in their emerging life histories; about reflecting on the ravages – and injustices – of time; and of realising, perhaps, how strange and random are the twists and turns of fate”At The Reunion Buffet is an Isabel Dalhousie short story by Alexander McCall Smith. Isabel is hosting the inaugural party for her class reunion, and naturally, thoughts turn to certain classmates: the promiscuous girl and the bully in particular. As always, Isabel endeavours to be charitable when others are less so: “Tolerance: that was what was needed for class reunions, just as it was for everything else we did. Tolerance was like one of those soothing creams – it drew out inflammation, it did away with the pain”. But when she manages to facilitate the giving of mercy and forgiveness, she later wonders if she has been misled. And if it actually matters anyway. Another delightful dose of Dalhousie feelgood.

A Chicken Followed Me Home!: Questions and Answers about a Familiar Fowl, by Robin Page

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—With a touch of humor, this well-designed title presents everything you always wanted to know about chickens—but didn't know to ask. The book starts with an unnamed narrator who's been followed home by a fowl, asking, "What do I do now?" After the hen eventually lays and hatches eggs and the chicks mature into adult hens, the child hopes that the creatures will "follow someone else home." Along the way, readers are introduced to information on anatomy, care, and life cycle. A question begins each topic ("Will my chicken lay eggs?") with keywords highlighted with larger, bolder type. Details are labeled or given small call-out illustrations. Digitally produced, the images are well integrated with the text and use highly textured shapes. Bright, solid color backgrounds alternate with white ones. Readers will find tons of fun and well-presented material; one page displays 260 eggs, the average number a hen lays in a year. A concluding spread of "More Chicken Questions" gives further detail and a list of more resources. VERDICT A charming addition to animal collections. Expect newly hatched domestic fowl enthusiasts to crow over this one.—Carol S. Surges, formerly at Longfellow Middle School, Wauwatosa, WI

Review This straightforward introduction to chickens is a lesson in book design of young informational books. Lots of white space allows the exemplar chicken, a Rhode Island Red, plenty of room; she (and the book clearly explains how to tell the males from the females) is generally pictured at about half life-sized. Each page or spread asks (“How long does it take an egg to become a chick?”) and answers (“If a fertilized egg is kept warm and turned regularly, a chick will hatch in about 21 days”) just one question about chickens and their care, and the sequence of questions is logical, with each answer building on what’s come before. The Photoshop illustrations are warm and unclinical but spare and always attentive to the particular topic under review. A closing spread offers a slightly more advanced set of chicken questions (“Why do chickens have combs?”) and a neat, brief directory of other sources for information. Sophie in Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer, reviewed on page 111, would’ve found the practical information here extremely useful. (Horn Book Magazine May/June 2015)In her first foray as solo writer and illustrator, Page, Steve Jenkins' frequent collaborator (and spouse), presents a child-friendly Q-and-A to prepare children for the titular eventuality. Starting with the all-important "What will my chicken eat?" the book goes on to answer more questions, such as "Will my chicken lay eggs?" and "What if I want baby chickens?" Readers will learn to tell the difference between a hen and a rooster and how to identify chicken breeds, as well as how to keep predators at bay. The answers given are concise....Done in a collage style similar to Jenkins', Page's illustrations are no less artful. Often spreading across double-page spreads, cut- and torn-paper images jump out in bold colors and patterns, occasionally complemented by monotone engravings for interest and contrast. Younger readers will be drawn to the bright, bold images, and older readers will enjoy the chicken facts. Two further pages of facts at the book's end satisfy those who might be curious about how fast a chicken can run or who might enjoy a step-by-step visualization of a fertilized egg's life cycle. Plus, a short bibliography allows readers to seek more information. A delightful and informative book for families wanting to raise chickens or learn where eggs come from. (Kirkus Reviews February 2015)With a touch of humor, this well-designed title presents everything you always wanted to know about chickens—but didn’t know to ask. The book starts with an unnamed narrator who’s been followed home by a fowl, asking, “What do I do now?” After the hen eventually lays and hatches eggs and the chicks mature into adult hens, the child hopes that the creatures will “follow someone else home.” Along the way, readers are introduced to information on anatomy, care, and life cycle. Expect newly hatched domestic fowl enthusiasts to crow over this one.–Carol S. Surges, formerly at Longfellow Middle School, Wauwatosa, WI (School Library Journal *STARRED REVIEW February 2015)“A chicken followed me home! What do I do now?” Ever had that desperate feeling? Here Page takes readers’ questions about the bird and gives simple answers to each question. The questions she poses (from the viewpoint of a child) include the essential question of what a chicken eats to general curiosity questions, such as how to distinguish between a hen and a rooster, how to determine its breed, how to keep the animals safe, will it lay eggs (and, if so, how many), and what if I want baby chicks? The answers are given in a straightforward manner using vocabulary a child understands. The book’s bright, bold, colorful illustrations often cover a two-page spread and will draw in younger audiences, while older children will like the illustrations and be intrigued by the facts. Back matter includes more questions and answers about chickens and a short bibliography. A great book for families with backyard chickens. (Booklist May 15, 2015)“A chicken followed me home... What do I do now?” begins this subtly funny guide to caring for chickens. The bird in question, a Rhode Island Red whose marbled swirls of red and black give the suggestion of feathers, makes for a handsome model as Page answers chicken-related questions. When asked, “Will my chicken fly away?” Page assures readers that “if you feed your chicken and give her a safe place to sleep, she probably won’t fly away.” Lightly irreverent in tone and design (dictionary-style inset images highlight various chicken food sources, predators, and coops), yet packed with information for urban and rural homesteaders alike, the book only leaves one question unanswered: Why did this chicken follow me home in the first place? (Publishers Weekly, *STARRED REVIEW May 18, 2015)For youngest science lovers, Robin Page's (My First Day) enticing introduction to chickens explains their habitat, anatomy, diet and predators. Each double-page spread features a question in large bold type at the top, a large image of a chicken at rest, in flight or running from predators, and a clear, concise response to the question. For "How do I keep my chicken safe?" a brown chicken with marbled wings flees a hawk, also rendered in full color. Three inset monochromatic images depict other predators, alongside the answer ("For a chicken, danger can come from any direction...") and explains why a chicken coop is important. A turn of the page features the question, "What does a chicken coop look like?" then details the basics of a coop. One of the funniest exchanges asks, "What if I want baby chickens?" and answers, "Then you'll need to get a rooster!" (A clearly labeled image of both a hen and a rooster on an earlier spread shows their differences and shared characteristics.) Page gives youngsters juicy vocabulary, explaining that 8-12 eggs are a "clutch," and a female chick is called a "pullet" and a male a "cockerel." She creates an eye-grabbing graphic of 260 eggs (the average number of eggs laid annually by one hen). Her digitally rendered images look more like collage, with textured feathers on the adult birds, and a fuzzy sheen on the chicks. Additional information and step-by-step illustrations show what happens inside a fertilized egg and the variety of chickens' combs. --Jennifer M. Brown, children's editor, Shelf Awareness Discover: An enticing first science book with fun facts about chickens. (Shelf Awareness June 16, 2015)What would you do if a chicken followed you home? How would you know what kind of chicken you have? How would you feed it? These are just some of the questions posed by the unnamed narrator in this nonfiction picture book for young readers. Using a question-and-answer format, this selection offers concise facts about what chickens eat, their life cycle, and other interesting information. Each page offers visually attractive illustrations, boldfaced questions, and boldfaced key words (e.g., chick, egg). The back matter includes additional questions about chickens. (Literacy Daily August 17, 2015)Sure,kids may know what to do with a stray puppy or kitten, but what if a chickenfollows them home? Page treats this appealing fictional problem, helpfullygiving audiences answers to some basic questions (“What kind of chicken isit?”), providing information on chickens and their care, highlighting a few ofthe many breeds, and very briefly covering such topics as food, safety andshelter, gender identification, egg laying, and chick raising. Furtherinformation on chicken history, physical traits, and a chick’s developmentinside the egg, as well as a short list of resources and websites, areappended. The information given here isn’t detailed enough to set a kid up as achicken farmer, but it’s a concise and inviting introduction to chickens, andthe “chicken followed me home” premise is an amusing angle. The layout anddigital illustrations (rendered in Photoshop) are simple, with rich,marbleized-looking reds and blacks stunningly creating the plumage of thetagalong chicken (a Rhode Island Red hen). Large figures and clean compositionswith plenty of white space make this great for group sharing, while the brieftext, clear fonts, and simple vocabulary will put this within readalone rangefor older primary-graders as well. Families considering embarking on thebackyard poultry movement or classrooms raising chicks would want to supplementthis with more detailed resources, but as a very first introduction to chickensand their care it would be hard to beat this. In addition, its brevity, striking artwork, and question/answer format will make it a winner with thestorytime crowd. (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books September 2015)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A near-perfect informational book By Janet Hamilton Summary: Did you know there are approximately 19 billion on earth? Or that chicken can run as fast as the average human (9 miles per hour)? Learn this and much, much more about everyone’s favorite fowl in this informational picture book. When a chicken follows the narrator home, he/she has plenty of questions about how to care for the chicken, whether it will lay eggs, and how to get eggs to turn into more chickens. Most of the text is in question-and-answer format. The answers are straightforward and brief, most just two or three sentences. The large, simple illustrations are the perfect complement to the text. The final two pages answer more chicken questions and provide additional resources.Pros: This is the first solo effort by Robin Page, collaborator and wife of author Steve Jenkins. She has put together a near-perfect informational book, simple but packed with facts. I didn’t realize exactly what I wanted to know about chickens, but Robin did, and she hit all the questions just right.Cons: If you are inspired by this book to raise chickens in an incubator, as one of our first grade teachers did a few years back, be warned that their constant peeping becomes annoying.

If you like this idea too make the villagers move and they make an EPIC village with a fence around it 35 blocks high and a lava moat around it so the mobs wants get in. If you say SOMETHING about those two ideas I will be 100% Happy. CANT WAIT FOR BOOK NUMBER EIGHT!!! ( And nine and ten and eleven and twelve and thirteen and fourteen and fifteen and sixteen and one hundred eighty four!!! )

Review The most beautiful book for parents to read to their children...A resource about how to talk to a child about a parent's cancer diagnosis...The best book on this subject that I've seen yet. --Maria Housden, author of Hannah's Gift: Lessons from a Life Fully LivedWhen I first saw this book, I cried. I cried as a mother of young children, for the clarity it brings to the young child's mind by answering the questions he may not yet be able to formulate and by claiming the fears he may not yet recognize. ...Mothers and fathers will have one less source of anxiety with this book as a resource...[This book} is not just for the child in the midst of a family illness. It is for all children and all parents everywhere. ----Beth M Deutsch, MD --Medical Director, HerSpace: Breast Imaging Associates[This book] is a gem. This is a very important book with a very powerful message. A beautiful work of art that educates children about medical and psychological issues relating to cancer, it is also a gift for the loved one with cancer. ...For a patient with cancer, there is no better gift than the comforting words and hugs from a kid who understands...It brightens the day. Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings provides a pathway to this gift. -- --Neil Shulman, MD author of What's in a Doctor's Bag?, Associate Professor at Emory University School of Medicine, and President, Patch Adams' Gesundheit Institute

After doing a lot of research I ordered this book specifically because the front cover and everything else indicated that the book was to help kids understand when "SOMEONE" they love has cancer. I was greatly disappointed when I received it only to find all the book talks about is when a child's MOM has cancer. It's hard enough to tell my children that their grandpa has cancer let alone confusing them with a book that specifically relates to the mom. Kids take things literal. The last thing I need them worrying about is that I have cancer as well! The cover should read "when your MOM has cancer", or better yet make the actual book more generalized as to who the person they love is because very few books cover the topic of cancer for loved ones other than a parent. The best book I've found to help a young child understand when a grandparent has cancer is "Someone I Love is Sick" by Kathleen McCue. It's very basic but it is a loose-leaf book that allows you to pick & choose what applies to your individual situation and change it accordingly as the person's condition or treatment changes. It also enables you to choose who the book is about: a grandpa, a grandma, a mom or a dad so you're not sending mixed messages to the kids by telling them one thing and reading them another.

I can't say enough good things about it. I hope your book reaches the thousands of doctors, hospitals, clinics, labs, schools, libraries and homes where it is really needed. You have produced something very special for this world.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. a must have for children of cancer survivors By Tina K. I can't even tell you how many times I've read Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings to my son! While I'm reading to him each night, he traces the "flight lines" of the butterflies with his fingers. He's only five and "gets it". His favorite part is where we share peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (The ONLY thing he'll eat for lunch!!!) I was 29 when I was diagnosed. He was only 1. I didn't have to explain anything to him as a one year old, but he understands the meaning of the pink ribbon now. This book is a MUST have for the children of survivors. What a great gift to give to your local elementary school or library.

Long ago, his father was accused of a crime he didn’t commit – stealing a valuable jade lioness ornament from the Shogun – and Kazuo must restore his family's honour.

But when Temperance is kidnapped and sold as a concubine, he has to make a decision – can he save her and keep the promise he made to his father?

Didn't Like The Main Character By Angel Hatfield **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review**It's 1648 and Temperance Marston has been living on an isolated island in Japan with her cousins. Because of customs, she must stay disguised as a young man. Rather than stay in war-torn England, this was fine with her. One day, she finds out that one of her cousin's workers has found out her secret and is trying to blackmail her into marrying him. This spurs her to sneak onto mainland Japan, where she eventually ends up in trouble.I had a lot of problems with this book. The biggest one being that I really didn't like Temperance. Especially considering the time period, she was set on doing everything she's not supposed to do, even though she knows there will be dire consequences if she is caught.

Good Reading By LAS Reviewer Temperance’s trip to Japan isn’t at all what she expected.Temperance had hoped that her trip to Japan would be a beautiful adventure. However, once Temperance realizes she will not be allowed to travel around the country; her excitement quickly turns to boredom. Consequently, she decides to do a bit of exploring on her own and meets Kazuo. Their first meeting leaves her wanting more, and once again she dares to escape the confines of the small island she’s living on. Unfortunately, this mistake proves to be very costly, and Temperance’s life is changed forever. I must say that while this is book three in a series, it can certainly stand on its own.Temperance is a very easy character to like. She’s definitely naïve at the start of the story, but she is kind, caring, and always willing to help others. Her inner strength is put to the test more than once in this book, and I had the pleasure of watching Temperance grow into a great character.Temperance and Kazuo make a very good couple. They are attracted to each other from the moment they meet, and I must admit that their connection is formed a little fast for my taste. Despite this issue, Temperance and Kazuo’s relationship still feels genuine. However, the restrictions on foreigners make the idea of a happy ending for the couple seem truly impossible. Ms. Courtenay did an excellent job of building suspense gradually. As this romance progressed, the couple moved from one precarious situation to another, and I wasn’t entirely sure that Temperance and Kazuo would find a way to be together without fear until the very end.Temperance and Kazuo face separate dilemmas throughout the story. As they try to avoid being caught by various enemies, they try to tackle one problem at a time. However, the solution to both Temperance and Kazuo’s problems are found in the same place, and Temperance plays a key role in restoring Kazuo’s family honor. It was not exactly the solution I expected, but it was certainly satisfying. The Jade Lioness is a very enjoyable book. Temperance is a sweet character, and I liked cheering for her and Kazuo against all odds. I recommend this tale to anyone looking for a different historical romance.originally posted at long and short reviews

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a fabulous, engrossing read By Jeannie Zelos  The Jade Lioness (Choc Lit)by Christina CourtenayGenre:  Romance, Women’s FictionI love books that show an insight into other cultures, especially historical ones. I’m also fascinated by Japan and China, so I was really pleased to receive this for review. Its a fascinating read, and with some realistic characters. Even in the West in this time period women were chattels subject to their male relatives, so seeing how they were treated in Japan wasn’t a surprise. Temi (Temperance) felt restricted after so many months stuck with the others on a tiny island, the closest the Shogun will allow the traders to get to Japan itself. Feeling stifled  she sneaked out one evening to swim and there met Kazuo. He told her he was an outlaw, but they struck up an unlikely friendship anyway. I loved the rapport between them, right from the first meeting it felt like they had something special.Temi is unusual for a female in that age, fearless to have undertaken the journey to Japan from England, educated and intelligent, and she somehow just trusts Kazuo. She’s picked up the language and is able to converse with him ( and later other Japanese natives). He tells her about his mission to clear his family's name and honour, though its a precarious journey with no promise of success. Honour is very strong to the Japanese though, and his family were important and close to the Shogun until his father was framed for theft. He’s trying to find out and prove the truth. You get a real sense of the poverty in the country, contrasting with the riches for the top few, a feeling of how dire times were for some families, how they had no other option, and oddly how often the children just accepted their fate being sold at a young age. Its as if it’s so common they seem to feel its normal – and to a degree it is. In the 1600’s  here in the UK kids were being used as child labour, and families struggled to feed them so they were sold or hired out when very young. I loved too the description of the houses, of the wooden frames and rice paper walls and windows, of the beautiful decorations the wealthy had in their homes, and how different life was for them from those at the bottom of society. Like that everywhere in a way, even now, but still interesting to read about life then.  We see some of the underside of the country in this story. Life from the view point of those at the base, along with seeing the beautiful countryside even though its harsh on them. Its a hard journey and a fascinating read, and a story I really enjoyed. Its got the perfect ending too, wraps things up with a feeling of satisfaction for me. Stars:Five, a fabulous, engrossing read and I’ll look out for more from Christina.ARC supplied by Netgalley and publishers. If you enjoyed my review I'd love it if you would please click “Like” and if you didn't I'd love to know why, in case I've inadvertently added a spoiler and need to edit.
