What happens when a mother divorces her abusive husband? “Motherless America: Confronting Welfare’s Fatherhood Custody Program” six memoir chapters answer the question in a raw tale of corruption and cover-up. Three protagonists, a lawyer, a psychologist and a judge, collude to eliminate mother from the children’s lives by calling her mentally ill, jailing, depriving her of financial resources and the ability to educate and improve herself. Under dire circumstances, Doreen plows forward, learns the law, only to discover and investigate the government program that funds father’s abuse. Six memoir chapters humanize by using real life to demonstrate problems, showing how policy affects lives. It is not common knowledge that our government finances a family court industry that mandates abusive fathers over protecting women and children. Motherless America shines a light on a government program designed to give fathers control of children by way of family court. Six memoir chapters with four research chapters that inform readers of the nature of abuse and how it is processed by the family court industry; who invented the government program to make sure men control the family even after divorce; occupations that administer the program; and government funding and program design. The book concludes with a chapter that lists problems and offers solutions.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Lucrative Industry of Custody By Sam Vaknin I am a voracious reader, but this is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is comprised of three parts: a harrowing personal story, a summary of state of the art research, and a manifesto. The author claims, increasingly more persuasively, that "the system" (courts, evaluators, guardians, legislators) is skewed against the victims of abuse (mothers, in most cases) when it comes to custody. She is far from alone in making such allegations, but she has invested an inordinate amount of resources into mapping the anatomy of the Kafkaesque processes and instutions that women are sujected to as they are being pathologized and marginalized in the wake of an acrimonious divorce from an abuser or offender. At the end, they frequently lose their homes, children, livelihood, and even freedom. A blood-curdling read and a must for survivors of abuse, divorce attorneys, social workers, therapists, evaluators, guardians, and everyone else in this lucrative mega industry of the disintegrating American family. In cases where there is a conflict between a mother and father over custody, courts are actually more likely to award custody to the father than the mother. If the father is abusive, he is more likely to get custody. Mothers go into court with the reasonable and common sense assumption that the children will be given to the parent who takes the best care of the child. Custody should go to the parent who helps with the homework, who goes to the parent-teacher conferences, who takes care of the children when they are sick, who takes them to their doctor appointments, who facilitates the children's social and extra-curricular activities, who isn't violent or drug-addicted, or a criminal, who doesn't physically, emotionally or sexually abuse the children. In fact, mothers find that no matter how good of a job they did taking care of their children, the courts will still give custody to the father. Some of these fathers who get custody are ex-convicts, domestic abusers, and pedophiles. Courts do this because they have a cult mentality that assumes that the right of a father to have access to his children is more important than the right of the child to be safe and well-cared for. They use a theory called "parental alienation syndrome", which was created by a known pedophile, to justify awarding custody to fathers whose children have reported sexual abuse. In many cases, once the father gets custody, the mother is prohibited from any contact with the child until the child is 18. This phenomenon is not just the result of isolated or ignorant judges who are misinformed about the needs of children. If fact, the federal government, through "fatherhood funding", provides financial incentives to probate courts to increase the number of fathers who have custody of their children. This "fatherhood funding" is unconstitutional, as it favors one gender over another and it needs to be stopped. Thank you Doreen for connecting the dots and explaining why these strange things have been happening in probate court and why it matters so much to women and children.

Parents will not stop this system until we realize it is not gender based but is based on the disposition of the most dysfunctional parent. I am weary of anyone attempting to convince people of a gender of race basis in the criminal fame court.
