Why should I not publish my diary? I have often seen reminiscences of people I have never even heard of, and I fail to see—because I do not happen to be a ‘Somebody’—why my diary should not be interesting. My only regret is that I did not commence it when I was a youth.

Review "There's a universality about Pooter that touches everybody...fits into the tradition of absurd humour that the British do well, which started with Jonathan Swift and runs through Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear to Monty Python" -- Jasper Fforde Time Out "The funniest book in the world" -- Evelyn Waugh "Pooter himself is as gentle as you could wish, a wonderful character, genuinely lovable. The book is beautifully constructed" -- Andrew Davies Glasgow Herald "One of those rare books that nails a cultural archetype and has won the affection of successive generations" The Times "The funniest book about a certain type of Englishness...there is a whole line of these comic characters like Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army, or Basil Fawlty" -- Hugh Bonneville The Times

By A Customer If you respond at all to this gentle, loving, intricately detailed, and acute (but never hostile)evocation of late-Victorian London, the chances are good that it will become one of your favorite books. The humor is rather special, and I've found that some Americans simply can't "get into" Grossmith. As for me, I reread the book every year and the very thought of it can make me smile.

O'Neill This book must be the most nearly perfect piece of comic writing in English, its humour gentle and subtle, its depiction of character, class, time and location flawless. It fixes forever the late-Victorian world of the respectable Lower Middle Class, populated by clerks, petty merchants and tradesmen, observing it with both objectivity and affection. It is splendidly read on tape by Frederick Davidson, whose assumed accent is perfectly gauged to reflect the upwardly-mobile aspirations of the Mr.Charles Pooter, the self-confessed nobody of the title, and which slips down the social scale by several notches in moments of stress and frustration. Though superficially simple, the construction of the narrative is complex in the extreme, with comic situations often being built up over a long period, and with clues carefully planted in earlier sections, only to come to fruition later. It is particularly impressive how the main characters - Pooter himself, his long-suffering and often silly but supportive wife Carrie and his exasperating son Lupin - emerge as rounded characters from apparently simple diary entries and achieve a realism and familiarity as great as any in more serious literature. The situations in which they find themselves - or rather get themselves - are not only ludicrously amusing, but also close to the normality of life as many live it, and one can often, uncomfortably, recognise one's self or one's friends in their reactions to them. What makes the Diary an enduring masterpiece is however the gentle and affectionate treatment of human weakness - and greatness. Pooter may be pompous, foolish and sometimes sycophantic, but he is also loyal, decent and honourable and his life, and his family's, for all its pettiness, also has its dignity. I first read the Diary over forty years ago and it has never ceased to delight me since - it remains a treasured bedside book to be opened at random - and this splendid tape of it is an ideal companion for long or short automobile journeys. (An interesting footnote is that George Grossmith, as a singer and actor, created many of the best known Gilbert and Sullivan roles on stage).

Thoroughly Entertaining By David L Rattigan The 'Nobody' of the title is one Charles Pooter, an ordinary middle-class Londoner in the late 19th century who reasons that if Pepys and Johnson can write diaries to entertain people, why should his diary be any less exciting? And so we are amused by such characters as Pooter's unpredictable son Lupin, his good friends Cumming and Gowing, and not least Pooter himself, whose most fascinating and hilarious trait is his tendency to write people off as lacking in humour when they fail to laugh at his occasional pun, whilst exhibiting a distinct lack of humour himself when it comes to some of the more trivial aspects of life.Pooter's descriptions of the mundane, as well as the occasionally unusual, happenings of daily life are told in extraordinary detail, which brings a real vividness to some of the amusing predicaments our friend finds himself in. And he really is our friend by the end of the book. There is a certain air of pathos about this man that proves quite endearing. His Victorian prudery and sensibility provokes much laughter (reading this on the train to London, I had to put it down a couple of times to avoid drawing attention to myself), yet also provokes a certain affection for a character who is as tragic as he is admirable. That is, despite some of his more pathetic idionsyncracies, the warmth and genuineness of his character shine through.

My own daughter has not only learned the lessons in this story but, it has allowed her to understand some of the basic concepts of death and that no matter if a parent is alive or not, they are always with us in our hearts. It’s obvious here that Andrew (the author) is very much in the heart of his daughter, wife and all those who read this beautiful story.

This book is laid out in an easy-to-understand format with all important words included. I would highly recommend this edition to any parents, new or experienced.

Although there are great photos - I don't think this is a book for reading to the toddler like other sign language books. Older siblings and I use as a reference book when we want to add new signs based on toddler's budding interests. Recommend!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Resource for Baby Sign Language By immer17 I cannot recommend this book highly enough. My 20-month-old son is really into it; it has been his favorite book ever since we got it. In-between illustrations of babies demonstrating the sign, the book features photographs of babies actually doing the sign... which is genius, by the way, because what baby doesn't love looking at pictures of babies?!It's worth mentioning that our first introduction to baby sign language was not through this book, but through a three-day class one year ago, when he was 8 months old. All of the signs we've learned since then have been picked up from You Tube as needed, then taught to him. But it would have been SO much more helpful to have this resource, which concisely teaches all the common signs AND provides "quick tips" for using the sign. The signing instructions are very simple and easy to follow. We will flip through the book and learn one or two at a time, or look up a specific word that interests us. My son actually sits on my lap for this book - not something that happens too often nowadays! As mentioned previously, he loves seeing the babies (or little kids) do the signs. It's certainly an interactive book - as it should be, with the material at hand. The book also includes a wonderful introduction, which offers great advice and addresses any concerns that you may have in teaching your baby sign language. Please don't pass this one up, if you are interested in signing with your child!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Mostly Good By Jack-O-Lantern An interesting book, and mostly a really good read. As with any anthology it was a mixed bag. There were a couple spectacular stories, some that were good, a couple mediocre, and one really awful one. I'm not going to go through each story, as every reader's taste and opinions are different. As far as Cthulhu Mythos anthologies go, this is a pretty good one, and I would recommend picking it up and giving it a read. The good stories far outweigh the single clunker in the mix.

Pretty Decent AMM Mythos Tales By rampageous_cuss These 14 tales (plus intro) were all pretty OK, interesting but mostly not too well structured - too often they're too long. undermining pacing which throws off any real suspense. Most of the stories are relatively faithful to the original - a few new items get invented for the mythos, and there's sometimes more sympathy between the Old Ones and the shoggoths than the original tales would support. A few pretty good stories, none I'd call duds:Beyond the Mountains of Madness - Robert M. Price's brief intro - the origins and popularity of the original, and a celebration of, er, inspiration, perhaps. The City at the Two Magnetic Poles - What if Wilbur Whateley survived the library dog and brought on the Azathoth apocalypse? Glynn Barrass gives a sort of Resident Evil spin on the idea. The Second Wave of Fear - A fascinating depiction of the mentalities of the Old Ones and shoggoths culminating in the great shoggoth uprising of the Comachian. A little long, but very inventive.Second Death - An interesting attempt to spin a horror tale off the post-expedition trauma of 1931-survivor Charles Danforth. Not as well structured as it could be - the story meanders, throwing off the pacing and undermining the suspense, a pity because the ending is pretty good.Beneath the Mountains of Madness - Nearly the best of the collection, but a trifle long. If the shoggoths are still in their pits, what are they doing there? The Continent of Madness - Nazis at the pole! Another Little-Shop-of-Horrors take on shoggoths. A little too much hardware detail for my taste, a little too long.Gedney - A man claiming to be the lost Dyer-expedition team member is found during the Starkweather-Moore expedition. Another conceptually-interesting story that takes a little too long to come to the point - where there's too much guesswork, not enough realization. The Pleasure in Madness - Set in the present, a Miskatonic University prof and his bodyguard travel to the Antarctic where they learn that a secret government base has been built within the mountains of madness - but where exactly is THAT? Again, a cleverly conceived story that takes a little too long to come to the point - yet the ending seems rushed, so to speak.A Biting Cold - Basically the same as The Continent of Madness, but better structured, with US servicemen instead of Nazis, and with a heroic ending. Heavy on the gore and some foul language, just so's you know.Garden of the Gods - My favorite of the stories, though kind of similar to the previous and a little longer than ideal. An Old One is discovered in South America, and an injured commando and his Yithian handler must take it and its minions on. Oddly, Goodfellow throws in lots of hooks, but doesn't do much with them. The Danforth Project - Another modern-tech spin on just how come no one has been able to find those sneaky Mountains of Madness!Tekeli-Li - A little too artsy and hard to follow for me, but an interesting idea; "At the Mountains of Madness" as a script for "The Twilight Zone," interspersed with the considerations of scriptwriter Chuck Beaumont.Static - A good, tight, tongue-in-cheek sci-fri of the "I mentioned to the pilot of the Sea Stallion that I got my Magic Arts degree at Yale, and it turned out so did she" school.Into the Black - I say! A British expedition sets off for the MM, but things go bloody wonky, dash it all!In Amundsen's Tent - An actual Weird Tale from a 1928 edition - ah, the old school. Leahy - I'd never heard of him before! Members of the Sutherland Expedition find a tent far from the track of Amundsen and Scott. What did the tent contain? A very good piece of horror, though the vein has perhaps been overworked since.

Worth the Hike if you like Adventuring By Dave Anderson Today I review BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, from the still-new Celaeno Press, who also recently published a King in Yellow anthology. They've come on the scene with the type of author line-up of other top-tier specialty presses like Dark Regions or Chaosium which I find to be a very good business plan, as it's probably the only way to survive in this competitive market. Readers who seek out this type of material quickly scan and pass over inferior material and seek out the best, in this case, Mythos stories, leaving any anthology that doesn't bring its A-Game behind. There are now hundreds of Lovecraftian anthologies out there, heralding in a golden age of Mythos Fiction but also a golden age of spam. Some good anthologies would be the Black Wings series, the Cthulhu Unbound series, the Book of Cthulhu series, the Dead but Dreaming series, and independent releases from presses like Chaosium or the like, usually in a themed form (Clowns of Cthulhu, etc.). I can confidently say that this new press can be at least put on your watch-list if you enjoy top shelf fiction of this particular genre. Par for the course, it's a themed anthology, which as long as you the reader like the theme, that's fine. Themed anthologies are only troubled when the theme doesn't interest a reader, so choose the theme wisely?Everyone likes the tale AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. There isn't a reader who has come across it that didn't like it as long as they gave it a fair chance, it's a classic piece of literature, and a truly horrifying piece of fiction. I remember on that first read for me, it blew me away. No wonder greats like King were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.A modern legend, still living amongst us but definitely a man who has played a role in the history of 'the Mythos', edited this anthology. Robert M. Price is one of the greats, and it's a real treat to see him continue to edit and also write fiction. So, by combining the MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS THEME with Robert M. Price's editing and anthology curating abilities, this new-born book had almost fool proof odds of surviving the 'wild'. These wisely chosen genetics do indeed help bare fruit for the tome, as there are many great stories that emerge from it.One of the book's biggest strengths is that Price has a blast editing this, which is apparent given the inclusion of the obscure IN AMUNDSEN"S TENT. When I saw that story in there, I knew Price was taking an 'auteur' route, in the sense that this was a project of art and passion and he basically was going to do what he wanted. My only negative comment on the story selection was perhaps that the variety wasn't large enough in scope, but at the same time, this isn't Cthulhu Unbound. The stories kind of HAVE to be in a certain vein. Which is why I would absolutely recommend it to ATMOM fans, fans of survival extreme weather type stories, fans of isolation type stories, or any other type of weather-themed fans out there. For the general Mythos fan I would still recommend it, but with perhaps the disclaimer that you might have to take breaks with it rather than session reading it if you aren't a die-hard ATMOM fan. I'm in the middle of a die-hard fan and someone who just knows about it and casually enjoys it, and I was able to read it through at a fast pace. There's A LOT of Mountains and Madness here, and if you're down for that, it's probably impossible not to enjoy. I'd rate it 90/100 on my review-scale which earns it a 5/5 on Amazon.Loved that there was a C.J. HENDERSON story in this one. I'm glad some of his work is still filtering it's way through the system. RIP Mr. Henderson.

A smoldering work of literary genius By WaterproofBoots This work of literary genius will capture your attention and hold onto it like a thing that holds onto other things. Tightly. A sexy beach read, a beachy sex read, and just an all-around good time. One complaint: I really think the author should have prefaced the work with a trigger warning for those readers who are survivors of shark attacks. The fact that Chambers failed to do so-- and thus caused thousands of fans to relive traumatic experiences-- is truly disappointing.

This dark, ironic, tale of duality and dying, is a story of fathers and sons. If you love Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, and Elmore Leonard, this book will resonate. Jack is a New York Times journalist with a second job as a contract killer for the Russian Mob. "What's the difference between a serial killer and an assassin? A pay check." The events occur mainly in Manhattan, Miami, Tel Aviv, and Greece. The book begins at the end, with the protagonist preparing to kill his final victim; himself. It finishes where it began. In between there is sex, laughs, deaths. . . and a bit of incontinence.

Jack has had a very different life than most. He spend his life working to two totally different jobs. Jack is a journalist and an assassin for the Brighton Beach Russian Mobsters. His wife and his four children have no idea of his double life. And that is exactly how Jack likes it. Jack is not your average assassin. Jack really is a kind and loving man, who would give everything for his wife and family. But Jack really loved his job as an assassin. Jack is the kind of guy who’s better in killing someone, than to make a simple request. In ‘If Jack Had’, we go through Jack’s life, his kills, his travels, his life as a child with ignorant parents and his life as an old man tired of life.Like I said before ‘If Jack Had’ is a very different read for me than my normal reads. But I’m glad I tried this book because it really was a fun read. It’s totally different than what I’m used to, but I really liked the way Steven Rappaport wrote this book. This book is fun, a little weird but it also makes you want to keep reading. I read this book in one day, because I just had to read more about how a guy became an assassin and still seemed to be the perfect dad and husband. This book starts at the end, when Jack is in his nighties, and with each chapter we get more and more to the beginning of his life. But there are some parts about Jack’s early childhood throughout this book. Although this is a very interesting thing about this book, it also made it a little hard for me to keep track of everything all the time. But thankfully, it always became clear where we were in Jack’s life.‘If Jack Had’ was definitely a read out of my comfort zone, but I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to other readers out there, looking for something different. I promise you, Steven Rappaport has this way of writing that even makes a romance/ fantasy/ paranormal book lover like me enjoy it. It has to be a good book if he was able to do that!! ;)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You Live By The Sword... By MJ Brodeck If Jack Had is a dark, ironic story of a man in search of filling the void of his father’s love, only to resolve it as an adult in a dysfunctional and violent way.Rappaport gives the reader an insider’s look at the Russian mob through the eyes of Jack, a journalist with a dualistic personality who has a second “job” as a hired hit man. Jack was the product of a dysfunctional family. His young hippy mother worked from home as a masseuse – and whore. Behind Jack’s gentle façade, he was overflowing with rage. A school bully taunted him relentlessly about his mother being a whore. The next day, Jack killed the bully with one rock to his head in Central Park. Jack was never caught.Affter entering Columbia’s School of Journalism, he sought out work in the journalism field, along with a job feeding his dark side. He woos Monika Minsikov, the daughter of Serge Minsikov. Serge controlled most of the drugs, loan sharking, illegal gambling and a stable of contract killers in New York. After seeing Monika for a few months, Serge pulls Jack aside after dinner. Serge’s instinct picked up on Jack’s evil side. Serge asked him to be a contract killer. As arrogant and boastful Jack’s father had been, Serge was soft-spoken and understated, never revealing his massive power and influence. Jack was only too happy to agree to this second job.Jack, the main protagonist, is a well fleshed out and relatable character. His lack of acceptance from his father becomes misplaced onto Serge. Jack continues to work as an assassin, feeling guilty about it his entire life. Plenty of Yiddish is peppered throughout adds to the story’s flavor. For those not familiar with Yiddish, you may need to look some of the words. For the most part, you’ll understand the meaning. You’ll follow Jack as he leads his second life doing “jobs” all over the world. From Paris, to Greece, to the pot havens of Northern California. Rappaport’s direct, colorful style of storytelling suits this dark, gritty story. I was on edge through the entire book, leading to a surprising end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about assassins, Russian Mobs, and father son relationships.A copy of this book was provided to me from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

By Larry Hoffer Full disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review."Some people choose a profession. For others, there is a calling. Of course, I had never questioned what I did. I was born to it. I loved it."Jack was a journalist for the New York Times, but that's not the profession he's speaking of. Instead, he's referring to his "second," more profitable job—as a hit man for the Russian mob.In Steven Rappaport's If Jack Had, his now-elderly protagonist, whose body and mind are in the midst of daily decline, looks back on his rich, full life. He had a beautiful, devoted wife who was always the love of his life, four children of whom he is proud, wonderful grandchildren. But it is his many years as a hired gun for a Russian mobster and his family that he thinks about most. But make no mistake: these aren't the regrets of a dying man, more the marveling of a life well lived, even if at times it was a bit more exciting than he'd have liked. This book is a rollicking ride through Jack's life, from being shuttled between two parents who wanted little to do with their child to finding nurturing love from his stepmother, how he pursued his "freelance" career, and some of his most notable assignments. It's also tremendously reflective, a man looking back at his legacy, so to speak, and the few times he actually struggled with what he did. Sure, this is a story of a cold-blooded killer, but it's also the story of a flawed man with a tremendous capacity for love and a tremendous need to be loved. Jack is definitely a colorful, complex, multidimensional character. If Jack Had is a breezy, fun read. Sometimes it spent a little too much time dwelling on his father's behavior, but it is understandable given the effect his parents' behavior had on his life. And when I read that Rappaport wrote this book to create a life for his son, who died suddenly at at age 40 from an unknown neurological disorder, the book took on a little more gravitas. Definitely a fun one.

Pigeons. Oh, how Bobby hated pigeons. In fact, he hated pigeons so much that he would rather see them all go extinct than have to live in the same world with one for another minute. It was time Bobby took things into his own hands. However, being the unfortunate, accident-prone individual that he was -- not to mention his blind hatred for pigeons -- things could only end in apocalyptic pandemonium.

A VICTORIAN LESBIAN ROMANCEQuicunque vult: A forward girl, ready to oblige every man that shall ask her.(Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1811)A feisty Irish prostitute with a murky past finds herself stuck in London's East End in the year of the Ripper.Reeling from a series of bad choices and even worse luck, Mary Jane needs to quit her immoral life. She's approaching thirty years of age, which means her best days are coming to an end, and she's running out of time to better herself.Ever cognizant of the narrowing window of opportunity before her, the openly sapphic and increasingly reluctant harlot sets her mind to escape from Whitechapel, her wishy-washy plans spurred on all the more when she meets Eva: an inexperienced young flower girl who falls keenly into her embrace and her bed.Determined to shield the poorly educated and impecunious sixteen-year-old against the corrupting influence of men, and the desperate misery of poverty that drives so many naive slum girls to the streets, Mary Jane will do whatever it takes to preserve Eva's innocence, and to keep the wolf from baying at their door. Even if it kills her.***Contains graphic & explicit language, including (non-erotic) M/F sex and sexual violence***

Quicunque Vult, by Keira Michelle Telford

From the Author I admit it: this book is rather large. Under normal circumstances, I've always felt that the more a streamlined a piece of work can be, the better. In this case, however, it was important to me to include as much detail as I possibly could because I felt I had a certain duty to the memory of Mary Jane Kelly. I wanted to give life to a woman who is only remembered for her death. To do that, I needed words. Lots of words.   The truth of the matter is that very little is known for certain about the woman called Mary Jane Kelly. Whether or not she was the woman found murdered and mutilated on Friday, November 9, 1888, in room number 13 at Miller's Court, is a topic of some debate, and having grown to love her very deeply over the last year, I'd rather like to think that she survived.

About the Author Keira Michelle Telford is a multi-award-winning author with a love for the gruesome, the macabre, and the downright filthy. She writes dystopian science fiction, erotic lesbian romance, and other lesbian fiction.

Another winner from this author By Roni Since the main character was Mary Jane Kelly I was worrying from the beginning that I knew how this story would end. Everyone knows Mary Jane Kelly was killed by Jack The Ripper right but even knowing that it might end in tragedy I was still turning pages wanting to know what was going on. Spoiler alert..this book is about Mary Jane Kelly the prostitute not about Jack The Ripper. Jack The Ripper really didn't start being a part of this book until over 40% into the book. If you can't handle hetero sex don't read this book because Mary has male "johns." I have yet to read a book by this author that I did not completely enjoy. Well worth the money!!!

It's a long read, but every bit of it is highly interesting. If you are interested in the mystery of Jack the Ripper, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It offers facts as well as interesting fictious explanations of unknown details found during the actually investigation. It's mainly a narative of how Mary Jane Kelly most likely lived, before, during and after the murders. It's a wonderful look into the working of a prostitue in 1880s London. Just be warned, though, that the author doesn't hold back in her explicit details of sexual relations between a woman (a prostitue) and a man (her customer) and two women. There are also scenes with unpleasant incest. I was glad of the fact that she didn't hold anything back. It made me feel as if could clearly see the happenings of the time and as a fanatic and student of history, I truley appreciated this. Also, the love and dedication seen between Mary Jane and Eva made the gruesome nature of living and working in Whitechapel at the time less atrocious. Even though it was a lengthy book, I had a very hard time putting it down.

I should say that I enjoyed the first two Telford books I read By Amazon Customer First of all, I should say that I enjoyed the first two Telford books I read, which was Cadence of My Heart and Housemistress. I like her writing style and think Telford is a solid writer. That being said, this book felt like an above average first draft. The story is told from the perspective of Mary Jane, a prostitute who falls in love with Eva, an innocent teenager not yet defiled by life in 19th century London. If you're going into this expecting a moving romance story, then I would suggest skipping this, as the main focus of the story isn't on the romance, but Mary Jane's life as a prostitute. Before I get into what I didn't like, here is what worked for me. Mary Jane as a character was interesting, and although I wanted to punch her several times for the choices she makes, I can't deny that I found her captivating. Mary Jane and Eva moments reminded me why I like Telford as an author so much. It was interesting to read about contraception methods in 19th century London. Grammar Nazis will find nothing to complain about. Now, for what I didn't quite like. As I said in the beginning, this story felt like an above average first draft. What I meant by that is I feel like 1/4 of the story could have been cut, and we wouldn't have missed out on anything. There a many information dump moments and flashback sequences that took me out of the story. There are scenes that could easily be summarized in a paragraph, yet Telford draws out for several pages and goes into detail. This was especially grating during some of the darker scenes, which while reading I kept thinking "Okay, I get it. This is a horrible thing that is being done. Can we move on with the story?" If there were only one or two such scenes, then it wouldn't have been much to complain about, but there so many overextended scenes like this that reading through this story started feeling like a chore.Another thing I thought that could have been cut out was the excessive cum/semen imagery. Not that I'm opposed to it altogether, there are many stories where such exaggerated imagery fits with the tone, but I felt like all the cum/semen descriptions were cartoonish and didn't fit the gritty, realistic tone of the story. I don't need to be constantly told how a guy's splooge is oozing out of a girls pussy. And despite the story follows a lesbian romance, this is not a lesbian romance book. I can't emphasize this enough. Mary Jane has sex with guys in just about every chapter. This fits with the book because Mary Jane is a prostitute, and this story is mainly about her life as a prostitute, but I felt like this needed to be pointed out to anyone expecting a this book to be a lesbian romance story.I would only recognize this book to hardcore Telford fans and people who are interested in how life as a prostitute in 19th century was like. Overall, I think the depravity in this story was ill used and almost fetishized the sexual abuse a lot of the characters were put through. The romance between Mary Jane and Eva was cute, but it took a backseat to the the darker elements happening in the book.

Best Ebook How to Be Good, by Nick Hornby

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of How to Be Good by Nick Hornby, read by Claire Higgins.

According to her own complex moral calculations, Katie Carr has earned her affair. She's a doctor, after all, and doctors are decent people, and on top of that, her husband David is the self-styled Angriest Man in Holloway.

But when David suddenly becomes good - properly, maddeningly, give-away-all-his-money good - Katie's sums no longer add up, and she is forced to ask herself some very hard questions.

Nick Hornby's brilliant new novel, a Number One best seller in the UK and Ireland, offers a painfully funny account of modern marriage and parenthood, and asks that most difficult of questions: what does it mean to be good?

63 of 68 people found the following review helpful. Not great -- but worthwhile By A Customer I thoroughly enjoyed How to Be Good. Another great read from Nick Hornby, I thought, full of admiration for such a wonderful talent. Then I looked at the reviews on Amazon.com. I couldn't believe how mixed they were. Then a pattern emerged. The ones that hated it usually started out with how much they loved his earlier work. Then they would criticize the two-dimensional characters and the unbelievable plot. Finally, for the more pretentious, there's an invitation to read "real" literature, like Dostoyevsky. To sum up, how dare Hornby write a book about something other than "How to Grow Up"? And how dare he introduce characters that aren't "realistic"? (these people would criticize ET because it was unrealistic). In answer to all those one- and two-star reviews on this page: I'm shocked, SHOCKED, that Nick Hornby wrote a breezy novel about contemporary adults and their everyday problems - you know, little things like trying to find satisfaction as we get older and our lives have settled into well-worn grooves - and not about the aging, but still immature, male. And instead of a really cool protagonist, we get a weary and confused narrator. So unrealistic to be so flawed. And who can believe in a trippy faith healer and a suddenly transformed house husband? Yet all of the characters spoke and acted in ways that seemed utterly real - in the context of the novel.I will admit that the novel seemed more like a first draft than a fully realized work, but that doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. The ending felt rushed, while also containing some lovely writing about the importance of reading, as well as a moving final image (perhaps a hint of the greatness Hornby may yet achieve). But that's Hornby - even his lesser efforts contain gold. Last I checked, Van Gogh's sketches were pretty highly regarded. Not that comparing Hornby to a past master is fair. But what a pleasure to read he is. And how artfully he examines the everyday issues so many of us are concerned with.Nick Hornby has much to say. He's still young. He hasn't produced his definitive work yet. I, for one, am looking forward to Hornby's future efforts.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Ehhhh... I was very disappointed... By never can read enough I have never read a Nick Hornby before and received this one as a birthday gift. Started out with a lot of promise and then just COMPLETELY lost steam. He didn't follow through on any of the issues he raised, they all just sort of faded away.Also- I felt like I was reading a screenplay instead of a book, that Hornby was so obviously angling to create the film that will presumably be created from this, rather than a book. It was as gimmicky as "Liar, Liar" or "What Women Want" in its plot-what happens when the crankiest guy in the world becomes a 21st century hippie? Unfortunately, nothing happens, really. I was very disappointed in this one- it was a chore to finish.

26 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Who are you and what did you do with Nick Hornby By A Customer I adored High Fidelity and About a Boy. Hornby is a genius at drawing characters who are lovable despite their flaws--because, let's face it, most of us are flawed and hope to be loved anyway. Yet with Katie Carr, Hornby has managed to paint a character completely devoid of feeling and totally self-absorbed. She hates her husband, yet won't leave him and continues to belittle him every chance she gets. Does she stay with him for the sake of the children? I wonder, since she seems to dislike her children as well. While funny in parts (parts that are few and far between), How to Be Good left me depressed and wishing for the old Nick Hornby, author of books that are seriously funny, hopeful, and believable.

By Erin from KY This Inside Out Ultimate Sticker book, from the Pixar movie Inside Out was picked out by my 5 year old daughter with her own money from her lemonade stand. She very much enjoys sticker books and has several from the Disney movie collection, including Frozen, which is her other favorite. This book includes stickers that go on each page in a specific spot, where the title matches the sticker picture. Sometimes my 5 year old does it alone, other times she wants to do it with me. The outline of the sticker shape is visible on the page where it is to be put, with a shadow outline of it in the correct place for it.All of her favorite Inside Out characters on there – Anger, Disgust, Joy, Sadness & Fear, as well as Riley and her family. These stickers were easy for her to remove and place on her own, most of the time, with exception of a few of the stickers that were hard for her. These stickers are NOT reusable, but the book is! Once all of the stickers are placed, you can read the book over & over again. My daughter enjoys saving her sticker books for this purpose and keeps all of them together in her room. This was a very short sticker book as compared to others, but the product clearly states how many stickers are there, so I didn’t have a problem with it. My daughter was happy with her purchase, and I am happy now that she has finished it, to read it to her anytime she chooses. I would recommend these books to anyone with a child interested in stickers, for road trips, church services, or to do at home for summer break. Boy or girl would enjoy this book, from age 3 or 4 (depending on the ability of your child) through age 6 or 7. It encourages good fine motor skills to be able to lift the stickers and properly place them.
