Life on the Mississippi (Diversion Illustrated Classics), by Mark Twain

Review Memoir of the steamboat era on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War by Mark Twain, published in 1883. The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1541. Chapters 4-22 describe Twain's career as a Mississippi steamboat pilot, the fulfillment of a childhood dream. The second half of Life on the Mississippi tells of Twain's return, many years after, to travel the river from St. Louis to New Orleans. By then the competition from railroads had made steamboats passe, in spite of improvements in navigation and boat construction. Twain sees new, large cities on the river, and records his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher 8 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover Part travel book, part autobiography, and part social commentary, Life on the Mississippi is a memoir of the cub pilot's apprenticeship, a record of Twain's return to the river and to Hannibal as an adult, a meditation on the harsh vagaries of nature, and a study of the varied and sometimes violent activities engaged in by those who live on the river's shores.

Allen Greenbaum This book--at times disjointed, rambling, self-referential, and irreverent--is decades ahead of its time. It's an interdisciplinarian's dream as Twain takes on economics, geography, politics, ancient and contemporary history, and folklore with equal ease. Mostly though, one appreciates his knack for exaggeration, the tall tale, and the outright lie. It's a triumph of tone, as he lets you in on his wild wit, his keen observation, and his penchant for bending the truth without losing his credibility as a guide. The book's structure is also modern: He recounts his days as a paddlewheel steam boat "cub," piloting the hundreds of miles of the Mississippi before the Civil War, then, in Part 2, returns to retrace his paddleboat route. Although a few of his many digressions don't work (they sometimes sound formulaic or too detailed) most of the narrative is extremely entertaining. Twain seems caught between admiration and disdain for the "modern" age-but he also rejects over-sentimentality over the past. He writes with beauty and cynicism, verve and humor. Very highly recommended!

The attention to detail and description place you within the story. This book is actually, I believe, an autobiography of Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemmons) life as a young man piloting steamboats up and down the Mississippi River.Whether the man, Mark Twain, interests you or not, Life on the Mississippi, is an eye opening look at America in an earlier era.In my (humble) opinion this is Mark Twain's best work.

Smith Let me guess: your total exposure to Mark Twain came in high school, when you were forced to read about the antics of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, right? Well, now that you've reached adulthood, you should make time to read _Life on the Mississippi_. It's mandatory reading if you live in a state that borders the great river, anywhere from Minnesota down to Louisiana. It's mandatory reading if you have come to that point in life when you can suddenly appreciate American history and post-Civil War stories written by someone who lived through that time. Writing in the first half of the 1870s, Twain retraces the steps of his youth: the watery highway he knew when he trained to be a riverboat pilot nearly 20 years earlier. He speaks of how life _was_ along the river, and what life _became_. It's almost a "you can't go home again" experience for him, while the reader gets the benefit of discovering both time periods. I have two favorite parts that I share with others. Chapter IX includes a wonderful dissertation about how learning the navigational intricacies of the river caused Twain to lose the ability to see its natural beauty. And Chapter XLV includes an assessment of how the people of the North and the South reacted differently to the war experience. If I were a social studies teacher, I'd use that last passage in a unit on the reconstruction period. So put this title on your vacation reading list, and don't fret: the chapters are short and are many -- 60! -- but you can stop at any time, and the words go by fast. _Life on the Mississippi_ should make you forget all about any Twain trauma and report-writing you may have suffered as a teenager. Here Is A Preview of the book..Oh, and there is a gift at the end of the book.

My life was pretty boring until I met Steve today. Everyday I did the same things as I did the day before. Wanna know what that was? Sit. All I did was sit there. Same spot. Everyday. I just sat there. It was really boring. I hated it. Then something amazing happened. I was sitting there (like always) when I heard a tapping noise. It sounded far away, but the sound got closer and closer. Tap. Tap. Soon the sunlight hit me and in front of me was a man. He took his pickax and brought it down on me! I thought it was really going to hurt, but it didn't. I was shocked. I fell to the ground and he bent down and put me in his pocket. It was dark in there, but not as dark as where I use to be. Then I guess we made it to his house, because he pulled me out of his pocket. I don't know what will happen to me. This is boring too, but at least there's the chance something not boring will happen... READ the rest by buying this book during this special offer!! There is a gift at the end of the book. I love your books By Aleena Klawiter This book was amazing and one thing that I want you to do is keep going with the story as in make the twins older and have Caroline's wedding and have everything happen. Everybody turns happy and that was my second time reading your books the first three I didn't know that you had four books than I found the fourth one. I love the books so much that I will keep reading them I just want to read more about them as in how the twins grow up and what happens. Thank you for reading this.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Good practice By Crease in the Page Each page has full-color illustrations and fun puzzles that involve multiplication facts. Kids will answer about 20 problems per page. A multiplication chart is featured at the top of every page for the particular number set being worked on (ie. the 9's chart is shown at the top of the page on which the 9's are practiced). This book is not particularly challenging and doesn't offer any quick tips for solving the problems, but with pictures and puzzles it is fun practice for kids.

It has definitely helped my children learn their multiplication facts. I don't know why this one being sold on Amazon is so expensive though ($15.29). I bought mine for $3.27.

By Kate Christie I have a second grader who loves math & was ready to move beyond what he was learning in class so I bought a few workbooks that would allow me to work with him at home. If your child has a solid grasp of addition, this workbook makes it easy to teach him or her multiplication. We complete 1-2 pages a night & they only take 5 or 10 minutes. My son loves the fun illustrations & actually enjoys doing the work.

Super cute, colorful, and fun board book By Laura I got the "In My Forest" book as a gift at my baby shower and ended up purchasing more from the series myself because my son liked them so much. They books are cute, short, and colorful. Plus the finger puppet keeps him focus on the book, even at only 10 weeks old. I would highly recommend these for kids or as great baby shower gifts.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love it but By Kelly Levy The puppet is not as well made as "In My Tree" which is surprising since it is the same author. My daughter who is 14 months loves the book and loves to kiss the puppet. And a book that gets her to smile is a good book in my eyes.

Atglen, Pennsylvannia: Schiffer Publishing, Limited, 2015. 192 pages, hardback, color and black and white photos, endnotes (sources cited and bibliography). ISBN: 978-0-7643-4843-3. $24.99. (www.schifferbooks.com). Telephone: (610) 593-1777. Schiffer Publishing sent this book along for review in August 2015 and I am barely catching up in publishing a review. Keep in mind that everyday another generation comes along and what may be common knowledge to most Bigfooters might be an eye opener for those not familiar with all things Bigfoot. So much of what is printed in this book is old news to me but to the up and comers, it may well be brand new information. Seeking Bigfoot, by far Newton’s finest work on the topic, “chronicles the twenty-first-century North American search for ‘Big Hairy Monsters’ —BHMs — variously known as Bigfoot, Sasquatch…" The author covers certain reports that stand out from various states and in the California section I’m very pleased he covered one from 2012 in which I interviewed the witness by way of a videotape in San Francisco in the summer of 2013. The witness posted his report to the BFRO website and does not want his name used in conjunction with his report. If I were to guess what this hunter sighted on September 23, 2012 west of Markleeville, California my answer would be Bigfoot. The male hunter, like many before him, told me in no uncertain terms that prior to his sighting his impression of the subject was “Bigfoot” was always just a big joke, somewhat akin to Santa Claus. When he had his sighting, all doubt and joking was cast aside. What troubles me is the skeptics and doubters will not go out of their way to interview witnesses in person, instead usually opting out for higher ground: it was a mistaken identity or the witness had lied about what they saw. That is not investigation or research yet these same people call themselves by such august titles as “a dedicated researcher.” The author does a highly commendable job in covering reports in the United States and rather than review too much, it is nice to take a closer look at the data of which he writes. Let’s look at the speed of the subject noted by the witnesses: “at a speed so fast that at first they couldn’t imagine what it would be.” (Colorado). “…faster than a human, maybe about as fast as a deer can run,” (Mississippi). And what about the head? “Its head was long and cone shaped.” (Iowa). “Slightly pointed cone shaped head.” (Missouri). “…the creature’s head ‘didn’t look human,” “a little raised in the back and sloping toward the forehead.” (Mississippi). The author covers some of the major researchers including myself with a nice color picture of the December 2011 Bigfoot Times. There is a substantial section on websites. I have high praise for this book as it has so many resources as jump off points for further research. There are some minor mistakes, of course. The man pictured next to Albert Ostman on page 15 is René Dahinden, not John Green. If you want a good introduction to the subject matter and some insight as to who is investigating and researching the subject today, there is a good section on that as well. Want to know about some of the movies that have been released on the topic. Well, this book covers those as well.Seeking Bigfoot is great value for the money and this release is in hardback. Do yourself a favor, buy this book. It is money well spent. As for myself, I have researched this topic for numerous decades and I would like to think I might have an opinion worth listening to. Cheers.

By H.M. 2005 This book will not officially be released until September 28, but is available here on Amazon in hardback in limited quantities. The information is largely re-hashed of what we already know about the subject, but the author does something different-he lists different researchers/bloggers/scientists and skeptics, as well as listing websites to go to online. He also lists movies, documentaries and TV shows such as Finding Bigfoot, Destination Truth and Mountain Monsters. Even with re-hashed information for us in the Bigfoot field, this is obviously a primer for the uninitiated and gets a rating of 8 1/2 out of 10 stars. I do highly recommend it.

About the Author Ruth Price is a Pennsylvania native and devoted mother of four. After her youngest set off for college, she decided it was time to pursue her childhood dream to become a fiction writer. Drawing inspiration from her faith, her husband and love of her life Harold, and deep interest in Amish culture that stemmed from a childhood summer spent with her family on a Lancaster farm, Ruth began to pen the stories that had always jabbered away in her mind. Ruth believes that art at its best channels a higher good, and while she doesn't always reach that ideal, she hopes that her readers are entertained and inspired by her stories.

Princeless: The Pirate Princess, by Jeremy Whitley

From School Library Journal Gr 3–7—Why should a princess wait around for a prince to rescue her when she can rescue herself? Better yet, if a princess cannot save herself, why does it have to be a prince and not another princess who rescues her? This is the premise of "Princeless," a refreshing, new graphic novel series starring a diverse cast of strong and independent young royals. Together they embark on quests, battling enemies and making friends along the way. In this volume, princesses Adrienne and Bedelia find Raven Xingtao, daughter of the feared Pirate King, locked in a tower, placed there after her jealous brothers convinced their father that his eldest child should be treated as a princess (i.e.: locked in a tower so she could be rescued by a prince) and not as the rightful heir. Adrienne, Bedelia, and Raven are adept fighters and easily overpower the men. The rest of this installment focuses on the relationship between Adrienne and Raven as they go from friends to enemies and then to honorary sisters. Bold colors allow the characters to pop against intricate scenery, and the action sequences are engaging and easy to follow. Pair with Jorge Aguirre's Giants Beware! (First Second, 2012). VERDICT Diverse and memorable characters coupled with snappy dialogue and plenty of action make this a must-have for all children's graphic novel collections. Put this in the hands of anyone who says action comics are only for boys.—Marissa Lieberman, East Orange Public Library, NJ

About the Author A graduate of The University of North Carolina with a BA in English and Creative Writing, Jeremy lives with his wife Alicia and daughter Zuri in Raleigh, NC. He's a big fan of movies, video games, comics, and literature.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Princeless never disappoints By Braeden Jones This may be the best volume of Princeless yet. The storytelling is taut and never bloated; the introduction of a new woc who is pretty heavily implied to be a lesbian continues to diversify this already diverse universe and story; the promise of more Raven stories is in the offings; and Adrienne is as badass as always.May Whitley and his collaborators continue to make one of my favorite comics and one that, as a librarian, I wholeheartedly suggest to all the tweens I know who want a great protagonist of color!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. NEW FAVORITE By mideno My current favorite comic -- and comic team. Disclaimer: I may have a mad crush on the Black Arrow ; ) Well written, artists do an excellent job with the action scenes, great fun characters and storytelling. Plus, how can you beat swashbuckling girl pirate out to save the oppressed while flirting and fighting. This is just the kind of comic I would have loved to have had growing up and am very glad to be able to keep on hand now. Nice introductory arc for the Pirate Princess and enjoyable whether or not you are familiar with the previous Princeless books.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. More please! By Elana I'll be shouting about the brilliance of PrinceLess til my dying breath, and The Pirate Princess is no exception! If I could buy a copy of this for every library and school in the country I would! No comic lover should be without this series; more-so if they have little nerds in their life they want to share with. No spoilers but FINALLY one of so few books for LGBTQ+ and ally children! Get ready to fall in love with Raven the pirate princess!

It's the 1970s, and life changes completely for a little girl named Laurren when she meets the most curious, incredible creature she has ever seen. With its wrinkly face, bulging eyes, and a nose that looks like it's been smashed by a freight train, it's the most pitiful creature she's ever seen...and the most loveable. Her name is Tuttie, and she's a pug. Her owner left her at the vet's office and never came back so Laurren and her family adopt her. Laurren and Tuttie are two peas in a pod. They become inseparable. Then one day, Laurren's grandma brings her a pair of red clip-on earrings and bright-red lipstick. That's when Laurren learns that when you put lipstick on a pug, you can conquer the world. Lovingly illustrated by Florina Boldi with her artwork converted to a coloring book style, this touching tale for children tells the story of author Laurren Darr's first pug, Tuttie, the inspiration for a lifelong love of the breed and pet fashion. About The Author: Laurren Darr has been 'owned' by pugs since her first pug rescue of White Pines Tuttie when she was just six years old. Tuttie had never been out of a cage or even uttered a bark. She was the joy of Laurren's life until she left this world at the age of 15 (human years, of course!). This silly pug would let Laurren dress her, put clippy earrings on her, and even put lipstick on her. They'd spend hours tootling around the neighborhood dressed in their Sunday best, which is why Tuttie served as the inspiration for the launch of the International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals over thirty years later. Laurren has had many pugs since. Zacchaeus was a gift to her for her 16th birthday. She has also featured family rescue pugs Inky & Sarge (brother and sister) and Benji, in her Pug Fairy Tale Series story adaptations. Her busy Chicago-area home is filled with her husband, her son, a fabulously fashionable pug named Bella and a blue and gold macaw, Kao.

Darkly Comic Short Story in the Weird World of Splatter Elf

Unicorns aren't always pretty. Sometimes they can be downright ugly. For bounty hunter and obsessive sword-collector Katzia of Clovenhoof a trail of dead unicorns earns her a chance to gain the legendary blade Wyvernheart. All she has to do is get rid of whatever foul creature keeps eating all the unicorns. When the corpse-laden path leads Katzia and her partner, the mystical Starseer Bathbrady, into the Necrogardenia Woods, it's soon clear that they have a big mess on their hands. Maybe more than the two sword-toting badasses can handle. With tough decisions on her plate, Katzia has to ultimately choose between friendship and shiny swords, the consequences of which have spectacularly bloody results. This short story is intended for mature audiences due to strong language, smartassery, splattery violence, and general mayhem.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 STARS - Pleasantly Surprising By History Lover 4.5 STARS Overby is definitely an author to keep an eye on. I heard about this about a week ago and suspected it would speak to my darker (read- gothic) tendencies. This is intended for older / more mature audiences (probably 13 - 15 +). I didn't find the content to be offensive. There was some reccuring potty humor), language (you've probably heard worse), & some ridiculously awesome fantastical violence (isn't that a good thing?).If you're offended by cursing or gore, this probably isn't for you. Come to think of it, if you're uptight, a fantasy-animal rights activist ("dragons are people too"), if you can't handle unicorn slaughter, or if you're a five year old little girl, this also is NOT for you.YOU WILL LOVE THIS if you like Dark (or British) humor, if you appreciate clever quips or one liners, if you're not overly sensitive, if the thought of unicorn blood and guts makes you giggle rather than recoil, if you like experimental lit and or fantasy, if you find (nonpolitical) satire amusing, OR if you're open minded and able to STFU long enough to enjoy the ride.My natural reactions to the piece were (in this precise order)... WTF AM I READING? Wait, did he really just say that? And finally, OMFG- this is too perfect. This was clearly well thought out and included some wonderfully developed characters that caught me by surprise. The comedy in this piece was dark and amazing. Few authors are brazen enough to go to the places Overby has taken us and far fewer are willing to publish it for all to see. Bravo, Mr. Overby. Bravo.I really enjoyed the piece but I found it to be a little confusing in the beginning. Though I'm not opposed to vulgarities, they sometimes seemed a little out of place (but this might just be due to regional differences in speech patterns). Perhaps I overlooked it but (in the beginning) there'd be a character that'd start talking and it'd take me by surprise since I thought the other character was alone. Not huge stuff- mostly just personal preferences for voice and style. It also might have been my A.D.D. I think, really, I just wanted to see more exposition in the beginning which (I know) is tabboo for the modern reader but I grew up on Classic Lit so I can't freaking help it. A little less dialogue and a little more exposition in the first 1/2 would have made it damn near perfect.DEFINITELY WORTH A READ 4.5 STARS. I'm saving the last 1/2 star for future publications when Overby gets it entirely perfect and make no mistake- he will. He's definitely someone I'll be watching closely. He has single handedly redefined my notion of Fantasy. I read it last night (stayed up until 1 Am to finish) and am now actively looking for people to share it with. I suggest you do the same.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Crude, violent and hilarious! By CDGK Crude, violent and hilarious, and those are all very good things. The Unicorn-Eater is Philip Overby's first official foray into the darker-than-Grimdark world of Splatter-Elf, and it was more successful than most of the heroine Katzia's monster hunts. The characters are well-developed and painfully flawed. The aforementioned half-elf Katzia is driven by an unhealthy desire to please her father (and to build a better sword collection than him), taking on ridiculous quests and deadly missions to hunt dangerous beasts. Her companion Bathbrady, a powerful "Starseer" capable of awesome feats of precognition but plagued by debilitating kidney stones. Their half-goblin guide Dunwig, who has an unpleasant obsession to touch dead things. A hilariously broken and argumentative group all around. Not to say The Unicorn-Eater is for everyone. The language is vulgar and the descriptions of gore and violence are explicit, but both veer so far past the edge of appropriate that it teeters in the realm of sublime parody.Such is the true theme of Splatter-Elf. It revels in its own ridiculous, over the top vulgarity. It's not cruel or vile, it's goofy and gory and gut-punchingly great. If you've got a sense of humour about unicorns having their entrails pulled out, then this is the book for you!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Funny, In-Your-Face, Brutal, and a Joyful Exploration of What Fantasy Can Do By Dave de Burgh As an introduction to a new and unique sub-genre (or however it can be described) of Fantasy, this was a great tale. Overby allows his characters to stand front and centre, giving the reader shades of detail and info so that the characters fully inhabit the story and setting, as uniquely as a swearing half-elf and a Starseer can. He also hints at a larger world, filled with crazy hunters, weird deities and even crazier monsters - damned well done, this being a short story. I'm definitely looking forward to more Splatter Elf!

Alexandria Grace Marcus has faced the darkness, the demons, and their children with bravery uncommon to one so young. She has fought to protect innocents and her loved ones as well, while the horde circled time and again since her return to the Lord’s Nephilim. And just when she was sure that peace had settled over her family, as they await the birth of Wallace’s child, danger strikes in the blink of an eye. On an innocuous night in London, Alex is stunned to find herself at the center of a coordinated attack by children of the Fallen – while she is alone. She valiantly defends her life, only to discover that her life is now the prize in a brilliantly spun game by those vying for power within the ranks of the darkness. Alexandria and her immortal brethren are thrown headlong into a battle which will take them to Valencia, Avignon, Schwerin, the sands of Saudi Arabia, and to the Colosseum of Rome as she works her way steadily through the gauntlet designed to lure her in. And she must revisit painful and poignant memories of Arianna’s past to keep one step ahead of the enemy. Alex knows the Light will always outshine the darkness, but it is the doing of it all which is the challenge. And now, she faces challenges unlike any she has known thus far.

She and her husband, Will, are Georgia natives and the proud parents of four very precocious and messy rescued parrots. The Immortal Reborn series is Natalie’s first foray into the world of authorship, and the development of an idea which first began with a simple piece of music years ago. It is her hope that you will find the world she envisions as captivating as she has, as she developed and imagined the world of the Nephilim.

I've read each and every book thus far and have always felt it to be a richly rewarding series and encouraged other readers to envelop themselves in the light and faith of our Lord found within these books. Now, after reading Book 6, I've had to take a few days before rating it to really assess what I think and be honest with how I feel.A good third of the book is fluff and filler of genteel bathtub or shower scenes and/or general audience rating of love scenes. While I think these scenes were beautifully written, the repetitiveness and frequency gets boring and almost distasteful -- as if the author cannot write anything else of worth and needs to rely on old familiar passages to meet her word count to publish. The final battle scene was built up to be something truly magnificent ... and then fizzled out quickly like a sparkler in the rain.I was disappointed at the end of the book and truly didn't want to rate it. Eventually I felt I should because I want to encourage Mrs. Wilson to get a truly professional editor to push and pull her to do justice to her work. Her stories are worth it! If all of these books had been written as one book with the majority of the fluff removed, the book would be epic!If I cannot be assured somehow that the next book will have more content to it, I regretfully will not continue to read further in the series.

I have read all the books in the series, and I must say they are well worth the read. I found this series quite by accident (Downloaded the wrong book) and I am so glad that I did. I was hooked from the first book, Arianna's Choice, all the way through to this one. If you like a clean cut, well written book, this series is for you!!

Respectful, Engaging, and Fun By Leslie Despite living in a small town that is unusually accepting of her Comanche heritage, Soonie sets off to an illegal Native settlement, where she hopes to make a difference by teaching the children there the skills necessary to survive in the white man’s world.Much like Zillia in the first Texas Women of Spirit series, Soonie is spunky, determined, kind-hearted, and loving. She does what she does because, deep down to her toes, she believes that is what she is meant to do. It’s easy to get caught up in her passion, and equally easy to share her fears or her sorrows. This adventure to her new home is but one part of her story. While there, she must learn how to live among the tribe, and, perhaps most difficult of all, to connect with older members of the tribe who, despite her being 1/4 Comanche, see her as little more than a white woman.I was worried this confrontation would be more painful than it was. She does struggle to gain acceptance and understand them in turn, but it never felt vicious, and for that I’m glad. Finding common ground is enough of a struggle. If the elders insisted on kicking her every time she was down, the story would have been too painful for me to handle.Personally, the emphasis on characters is my favorite part of the story. There are a handful of characters in here that shine; each one has that “it” factor that could make them a protagonist of their very own book. Even among the antagonists, things were varied. Some were hardened, beyond redemption. Others were nuanced and almost sympathetic in their misguided ways. There is action in the story, and at times it was exciting enough that I read so quickly I nearly skimmed because I had to see what the outcome would be. Despite these chunks of action, on average the tension didn’t seem very high, but I didn’t mind in the least. I still found the story engaging and easy to read because there was plenty else to keep me going. If you live for action, though, you’ll need to read with an open-mind to other types of story-telling.Castillo handles the topic of a Christian Comanche woman returning to help her people very well. Though Soonie strives to help, she in no way has a “savior complex” about her actions; she’s actually quite humble and respectful of tribal traditions, with the exception of hallucinogens, which I think is more than fair.Despite Soonie’s deep faith, she doesn’t roll into the settlement trying to covert anyone, either. She simply lets her love of the Lord shine, and is happy to talk about it to anyone who shows interest. She’s neither pushy nor condescending, yet she still helps strengthen countless people’s faith. It’s a perfect balance, and I adore that Castillo is always so respectful and loving in how she approaches religion.Even if you’ve never read River Girl’s Song, it’s still easy to read/understand Comanche Girl’s Prayer, though some comments about Soonie’s best friend, Zillia, might not be as meaningful to you. If you have read River Girl’s Song and liked it, you’re going to love those little hints about how Zillia’s doing and what she’s up to.

It is told from the viewpoint of a part-Comanche young woman, Susannah, whom we come to know as “Soonie,” and it portrays a fascinating landscape and culture. Although Soonie undergoes many difficult experiences, her story ends with an unexpected twist that is eminently satisfying.Soonie’s Christian faith is an integral part of the story and provides both depth and realism. I appreciated her firm conviction, woven throughout, that no matter the skin color, all human beings are created equal and are equally loved by God. On a personal note, I especially liked her prayer at a stressful moment: “Thank you, God. Every time I need an answer, you always help me . . . Even if it’s not always exactly what I want it to be.”

Unforgetable By Jezebel I read several books a week, and often they sort of melt all together and I can't even recall their storylines a week later. Not this book. This book will be remembered. Saying, I couldn't put it down is an understatement. At one point I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out if... but I'm not going to give any spoilers. Suffice it to say, there is suspense. And the writer knew just how to script it to keep me nervously awaiting the outcome. I loved how the author describes things using analogies. Ms. Castillo is a gifted author who brings you right into the story and let's you sit in the middle of the suspense until you almost break out in a sweat. I would highly recommend this book. I'm especially fond of Indian stories, and I did quite a bit of research on them years ago myself. I can tell she did her research well, she brought into the story many true facts about the Indians and their ways without making it sound like a history lesson as some books do. Whenever I do a review I like to point out the best points and the low points. I have to really think hard to find a low point in this book, but if I absolutely have to, I'd say it was that I didn't get enough of the Soonie and Lone Warrior, but maybe there is a sequel or book three coming. I'm off to read The River Girl's Song. Giving this 5 stars because I absolutely loved it.

Armistead Maupin's uproarious and moving Tales of the City novels have earned a unique niche in American literature, not only as matchless entertainment but as indelible documents of cultural change in the '70s and '80s.

Among the cast of this groundbreaking saga are the lovelorn residents of 28 Barbary Lane: the bewildered but aspiring Mary Ann Singleton; the libidinous Brian Hawkins; Mona Ramsey, still in a'60s trance; Michael "Mouse" Tolliver, forever in bright-eyed pursuit of Mr. Right; and their marijuana-growing landlady, the indefatigable Mrs. Madrigal.

A delightful starting point for a brilliant satire By Tucson2k First things first when it comes to reading Maupin's Tales of the City series -- learn to read in segments. This first book flashes from place to place and character to character swiftly so that the reader can get an overall picture of the situation. Quite honestly, it reads much like if it were a television series (which it was on PBS and Showtime...two miniseries, so far). Thus, if you expect it to be full of long chapters and focusing on a conversation or situation for a long while, you're going to be disappointed (much as one of the more recent reviewers of this book was, I note). Maupin's tale of a newcomer to San Francisco, the naive and reserved Mary Ann Singleton, and her misadventures with the residents of Barbary Lane (Mrs. Madrigal, the gay and proud Michael, the liberated Mona, etc.) is the stuff of Dickens' serials, brought to the 1970s in a flash of humor, adventure and out-and-out 1970s wackiness. I have read and re-read and re-re-read the entire series over and over again and have never failed to be entertained by the characters or the situations they find themselves in. Truly one of the most brilliant series out there. Give it a chance -- you won't regret it!

A brilliant, nostalgic expose of kinder and gentler times By A Customer I first read "Tales of the City" in its first printing in the late 1970's and waited with baited breath for the next edition to be printed. Each time I picked up a new book, it was like visiting with old friends. All of Armistead Maupin's characters are so real that I shall never again visit San Francisco without thinking about Mrs. Madrigal, Michael "Mouse" Tolliver, Mary Ann Singleton or Mona. I especially liked the way in which Armistead Maupin delved into the psyches of each character. As the character of Michael was exactly my age when he was first created, and continued to age along with myself throughout the series, I very easily identified with his changing views of life in the city. It's a wonderful read which is a must for every serious library.

I'd learned there was more than just the three "Tales" books with the characters I'd met and loved from the "Tales of the City" trilogy. I was all ready to jump into that delightful care-free world (albeit a little reticent to bump into something like Jim Jones again, who showed up in "Further Tales of the City" and is the only disbelief I was unwilling to suspend). However, staying true to the reality of the movement and the 80s, I found AIDS, death, decay and the long slide down from the fun and energy from the first three books. I didn't mind, though it was a bit of slap in the face, and the death of a major character to AIDS before the book even begins was a real punch in the stomach.Put simply, Maupin drove home, hard, how vivid the change was for those who had existed in the care-free seventies, who found themselves suddenly trapped in the shallow, AIDS-ridden eighties. The characters are back in full company, with the death of one major character, and the introduction of a few others. The story still focuses mostly around Michael and Mary Anne to my mind, but the rest of the "Tales" folk are definately along for the ride. The topics darken up a bit, and reality is definitely in play this time. I reccommend it, but with the warning that you're not getting the same care-free tone of the "Tales" trilogy - for the seventies are over.
