One of nature's most hopeful sights is a beam of golden sunshine burning through the dark and churning clouds of a raging storm that has just subsided. That is the very picture of Galina's story, quintessentially Russian and very moving; one that will infuse the reader with a feeling of intense hope. It is a must-read for anyone facing an oncoming storm, standing in the midst of one, or still reeling in the devastation of tribulation, tragedy, and loss. Galina grew up in the post-Stalin years of the Soviet Union when Christianity was still the target of state oppression. As a young woman she joined an underground church in the city of Krasnodar and boldly shared her faith. After a romance with a tragic ending she struck out on her own seeking happiness in the sunny seaside city of Yalta on the coast of the Black Sea. Instead her life became an epic struggle of hope versus despair, life and death, even while she was surrounded by the beauty of tsarist palaces and beaches. Her faith had been shaken to its foundations and Soviet society collapsed around her in political and economic chaos. She immigrated to America hoping for a better life. But darkness followed and within its shadows a cataclysmic act played out in Fresno, California, on the evening of January 22, 1999. The horrific drama riveted the attention of the entire city and became the subject of television and newspaper headlines. It left people shocked, bewildered, and saddened. But Galina refused to let despair conquer her. This is the story of Galina's Hope.

It definitely shows you how God never left Galina nor forsook her. Even after the most tragic events, God pulled her through. God gave her hope. I love how there is a summary at the end of each chapter and then some questions. It would be perfect for a book club or Bibly study group. I am sure this was a very hard story to tell. Thank you so much for sharing your heart-wrenching story.

Galina has included life lesson summaries in each chapter to guide you to your own healing and reconciliation. From Russia, to California, to upstate New York, it's a very engaging story. I knew Peter and Galina before reading the book, and knew a bit of their story. But I never fully grasped the depths of pain and despair they each were in before. Maybe that's because the recovery has been so miraculous. I highly recommend this book for anyone, but especially those struggling with abusive relationships or pain of loss.

Great Character and nice boxed set By MomofFour My daughter loves AG and this book, written by author who has done other books for AG hits the mark again. As mom I loved that the 3 piece box set included all the Grace books and was 2 cents cheaper than buying books 2 and 3 which we needed (got first book with our Grace doll). It means we got what we needed and had an extra book (volume 1) to share :)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good message but needs some editing By Florida Kayaker I thought this would be an interesting book for my grandkids. Both of their parents are executives and I thought a book that touched on industry might be of value for them. This book has a message about social responsibility and I don't think you can ever be too young to start learning that. While I appreciate that message I find that the editing issues in this book detract from the story. This book doesn't have a lot of words so it should be somewhat simple to edit.

The star of the New York Times bestselling Here Comes the Easter Cat is back—and this time he's met his match!

When Cat loses a tooth, the Tooth Fairy delivers a wholly unwanted sidekick: a mouse. Together, Cat and Mouse are tasked with running a few Tooth Fairy-related errands—a challenge, since Mouse is just as competitive and mischievous and hilariously self-involved as Cat. The stakes rise and so does the deadpan humor, culminating in a satisfying surprise that will leave readers eager for yet another delightfully devious Cat adventure. An homage to classic comic strips from the author of The Quiet Book and The Loud Book, this New York Times bestselling series is perfect for fans of Pete the Cat, Bad Kitty, and Mo Willems's Pigeon books.

Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat, by Deborah Underwood

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Cat is back, and this time a lost tooth and the promise of a visit from the Tooth Fairy inspire his shenanigans. His misguided attempt to trick the legendary sprite into revealing herself to him backfires when Cat is recruited by the Tooth Fairy to conduct three difficult exchanges. He receives honorary wings, a tutu, and some "help" from a fellow trickster (Mouse). The reluctant pair first visit a gopher hole, then a squirrel's nest, and finally a bear cave, where only teamwork will get the job done. Once these missions are accomplished, Cat's desire to meet the Tooth Fairy is magically fulfilled—much to his surprise. As in the first two books, the author assumes the role of narrator and commentator, addressing Cat and Mouse directly, and they respond using only placards, body language, and priceless facial expressions. The colored-pencil and ink illustrations practically tell the story on their own, thanks to the extensive use of white space and an absence of irrelevant detail that puts the focus squarely on the characters and their wily behavior. VERDICT Fans of Here Comes Santa Cat and Here Comes Easter Cat (both 2014, Dial) and newcomers alike will ask for this book again and again.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, Oak Bluffs, MA

Review "Underwood plays the two [characters] off each other to great effect . . . and Rueda's ink-and-colored-pencil illustrations heighten the humor with spot-on expressions and sight gags. Generous white space, expert timing, and minimalist illustrations focus attention on the plentiful, playful banter. Clever fun continues in this delightful series."—Kirkus"Priceless . . . Fans of Here Comes Santa Cat and Here Comes the Easter Cat and newcomers alike will ask for this book again and again."—School Library Journal "Cat, who wanted to steal the Easter Bunny's spotlight and bypass the naughty list by impersonating Santa, is back and crafiter than ever. . . . The lost-tooth canon, smaller than the Christmas canon and maybe even the Easter-bunny canon, has plenty of space for this welcome addition."—The Horn Book “Cat is a delight, thoroughly and appropriately childlike in action and emotion . . . and a hoot in an aqua tutu and fairy wings, as is the droopy-eared, potbellied Mouse in similar attire. Fans of the previous books will want to join Cat on this latest jaunt, [as will] those looking for a tooth fairy-themed title.” —BCCB

About the Author Deborah Underwood is the author of numerous fiction books for children, including A Balloon for Isabel, Pirate Mom, Part-Time Princess, and the New York Times bestsellers The Quiet Book, The Loud Book, and, of course, Here Comes the Easter Cat. Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat By BabyMo My three girls fell in love with Cat over a year ago when we borrowed Here Comes the Easter Cat from the library. This book was followed by Here Comes Santa Cat around the holiday season. These delightful picture books were written by Deborah Underwood and illustrated by Claudia Rueda. Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat is the third entry in the series. At the beginning of the book, Cat has just received a coin from the tooth fairy. Cat is disappointed that he didn’t get to meet her, so he hatches a scheme to trick the tooth fairy by giving her a tooth from a comb. Everyone knows you can’t trick the Tooth Fairy, and she sends Cat a note. If Cat can help her with some deliveries, he can meet her. Cat is joined by a mouse that also tried to trick the Tooth Fairy. Cat is usually thinking of ways to benefit himself- can he work together with Mouse to make those deliveries? And will Cat ever get to meet the Tooth Fairy?Cat has a surly side, but he can be very considerate when he wants to be. This is especially evident when Cat is put in situation where he must work cooperatively with someone new. This is a good lesson for all of us, regardless of age.The format of the Cat stories is rather unique. Cat doesn’t actually talk; he communicates by holding up signboards with pictures on them. The book consists of a narrator having a conversation with Cat and asking questions and watching Cat go about his business. This makes the illustrations a very integral part of the story, and Rueda does a wonderful job of bringing Cat to life. Much of the humor lies in what Cat holds up- my girls giggled and giggled at Cat’s antics. They especially enjoyed seeing Cat put on a Tooth Fairy costume for the delivery jobs.I would absolutely recommend Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat. This is such a cute little story. I’d imagine that it was a little more difficult to write because there isn’t any standard Tooth Fairy source material like there is for Santa and the Easter Bunny. I applaud Underwood’s creativity in coming up with this story, and my girls and I are looking forward to finding out what Cat’s next adventure is going to be!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. FUNNY SWEET BOOK! By E.R. Stanton Cat wants to meet the tooth fairy! If that doesn't grab your attention, I'm not sure what will. The fun starts when Cat thinks up a way to get the tooth fairy to come back, and gets a hilarious surprise response. The writing is funny and sweet and the illustrations are beguiling. If you haven't already, you will fall in love with Cat—and you will LOVE this book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Story about the patience and not giving up By Helpful Advice ‘Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat’ is the second book for children written by Deborah Underwood and illustrated by Claudia Rueda I read – after the story about Easter Cat this time the Tooth Fairy is in the center of all the happenings. The known main character Cat will lose a tooth though that seemed as a great opportunity to meet Tooth Fairy. But when the original plan will not work as Cat expected, there is a backup plan - Cat would make a new scheme that involves Mouse, trying to do whatever is necessary to meet the Tooth Fairy. But, the Tooth Fairy is not easy to summon, she is not going to show in front Of Cat without the few requests of her first need to be fulfilled…Deborah Underwood again created the entertaining picture book for children between 3 and 5 years that encourages children's imagination while Claudia Rueda with her dynamic pen and ink illustrations that have lot of empty white space around the main character made this conversational style even more effective. With this book, the authors in innovative manner told the story about the patience and not giving up, doing whatever is necessary to meet your goal. Therefore, ‘Here Comes the Tooth Fairy Cat’ is another funny and educating story that because of its style and simplicity should be heartily recommended primarily for preschool children enabling them to once again spend great time and enjoy the adventures of charming Cat character.

It is always telling a cool story about Finley the fish. My mom aways says, " Read something educational or has a lesson in the end. " Well, here's the book that youv'e been waiting for. I finally found a good book that teaches a good lsson and my little brother likes it. I hope you check and read the other reviews before you just buy it. It took me about two days to even start to like it. I wish I coud just become president so that way, I could make all Ebooks free. I also wish that they would stpp trying to bann Oreo's. I really like Oreo's because of the fact that the chocolate is what you taste first. I hope you think about buying this before going back.

In the start of a charmingly imaginative cozy series sure to delight fans of Carolyn Hart and Diane Mott Davidson, Diane Stingley introduces a blundering detective who believes herself to be the great-great-granddaughter of the legendary Sherlock Holmes.   After failing to launch her career as a Hollywood actress, Tammy Norman returns home to North Carolina, desperate for a regular paycheck and a new lease on life. So she accepts a position assisting Shirley Homes, an exceptionally odd personage who styles herself after her celebrated “ancestor”—right down to the ridiculous hat. Tammy isn’t sure how long she can go on indulging the delusional Shirley (who honestly believes Sherlock Holmes was a real person!), but with the prospect of unemployment looming, she decides to give it a shot.   Tammy’s impression of her eccentric boss does not improve when their first case involves midnight romps through strangers’ yards in pursuit of a phantom dog—that only their client can hear. But when the case takes a sudden and sinister turn, Tammy has to admit that Shirley Homes might actually be on to something. . . .Praise for The Case of the Invisible Dog   “A protagonist with panache stars in a delightful twist on the Sherlockian tradition. Shirley's not Sherlock By Anonymouse "The Case of the Invisible Dog" is the first in a proposed series of Shirley Homes mysteries and it feels like a first book. The pacing is erratic and quite a lot of time is spent setting the stage. The book isn't as bad as some reviewers make it sound, really, but it isn't good either. We are reading Tammy Norman's account of the case, a formula that echoes Conan Doyle. Sherlock solves and Watson writes. But Tammy isn't Watson. She has no particular skills or experience. Watson was a warrior and crack shot, remember. Tammy maintains an internal dialogue with her shrink Phil that should have been cut out of the book entirely. Other characters include Myra, Shirley's sister, a fat slob who dresses in outlandish clothes, plays golf, and serves no useful purpose unless Ms Stingley is attempting a send up of Mark Gatiss. There is also a mysterious Dr. Morgan who ghosts in and out, a galumphing taxi driver, and a Moriarty-like "Woman in the Limousine."The biggest problem is that Shirley is an idiot, not a savant. She has none of Holmes' skills of observation and analysis. She is thoroughly rude and disliked by people around her including Mrs. Hobson downstairs, unlike Holmes who, though critical of sloppy thinking, was unfailingly gallant. Tammy learns to manage her boss through locutions like: You really did have the right idea, Shirley. It took me a while to figure out that when you said X it meant that Y was going on and that the next step should be Z. That kind of manipulation is ok once or twice but by the end, Tammy's verbal pushes were all that moved the plot along. There is a possibility that Ms Singley will read all of these negative reviews and that the second book of the series "The Case of the Purple Goldfish," due out in Feb 2016, will be better than this one. Read the reviews. If they are good, skip the dog and start with the fish.I received a review copy of "The Case of the Invisible Dog: A Shirley Homes Mystery" by Diane Stingley (Random House – Alibi) through NetGalley.com.

A Case for Laughing Out Loud By iiiireader I am a fan of the Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories as well as books, movies, and television series that are based on the original tales. I was happy to pick up “The Case of the Invisible Dog” on that basis alone. It was also the first time I had read a book by Diane Stingley, so I had no idea of what her style would be like.I laughed my way through the book. I also chortled, guffawed, snorted through almost every speech Shirley Homes made in the book. Yes, speech, because Shirley does not merely have a dialog or a response or a question – no, she waxed poetic on every subject.I realize that with my common and simple mind, I might have missed some of the nuances but I had a blast with this book. The author has taken the essence of Sherlock and placed him in Shirley in modern day with hilarious results.Tammy, a has-been actress who has moved home from LA, has become Shirley's “Watson.” It takes Tammy a bit to realize what is going on and to stop being offended by the condescending attitude she has to deal with (hence, the reference to “common” and “simple” above.) Once she figures it out, she gets on board and assists Shirley in ways Watson never dreamed of.The story is really about an invisible dog, so never fear, the mystery will be solved. Also, the murder and mayhem, too. The story was every bit as funny as the concept. The characters were also humorous. The author's ability to capture her characters gave me a wonderful visual of the story. I think that it would make a fantastic comedy movie. The descriptions of hats and various disguises had me laughing uncontrollably. It's a good thing that the author already has a second book on tap. Otherwise, I don't know how such a commonplace mind as my own could have dealt with the end of such a funny story. I look forward to reading the second book in the next year. If the author can stay true to what she has written in this first tale, I will be right there reading follow-on books in this series.I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Delightful mystery romp By JAR The Case of the Invisible Dog, by Diane Stingley, is a refreshing and unique twist on the classic Sherlock Holmes tales. The story is told from the perspective of Tammy Norman, a young woman who is down on her luck, having given up on a Hollywood acting career and living off the tender mercies of her Aunt Ilene and cousin Anna back home in a small North Carolina town. In her search for a new beginning she answers the unorthodox want ad placed for an assistant by a very wealthy woman, Shirley Homes. Convinced that she is a direct descendant of THE Sherlock Holmes, eccentric Shirley Homes has decided to become a private investigator. The Case of the Invisible Dog is opened as Shirley Homes inadvertently overhears a conversation while enjoying her morning bear claw at Hobson's Bakery, located in the storefront below her office. The complainant, Matt Peterman, says he is being harassed by a barking dog at night, but no one else hears the dog. Now sleep deprived and spurned on by his fear of dogs, Matt accepts Shirley's offer to help. Thus begins the adventure for Tammy and Shirley. When two days later Matt Peterman is shot to death in the alleyway behind his workplace, Tammy and Shirley become embroiled in the investigation, however it is against the police detectives dictates that they do so. Their involvement is being orchestrated by a mysterious Moriarity character, who appears in many forms. As the mystery unravels and the characters involved grow in number, it becomes apparent who the real problem solver is, but the underlying mystery defies solution. This novel is a fun romp with come alive characters, well sprinkled clues, serious plot twists, and a brand new slant on the Holmes characters. In the same vein as such shows as Elementary and Sherlock, much poetic license is used in this Holmes rendition, but there is enough connection to bring to mind original characters in new ways.Ms. Stingley has unleashed a new series of delightful adventures that will leave you wanting more. I look forward to the next installment to see how Shirley, Tammy, and the host of characters work through the next case!

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Fleming and Rohmann team up for their second picture book in celebration of Bulldozer's birthday. He zooms across the construction site in joyous anticipation of his big day only to discover that every construction truck he greets is too busy to acknowledge anything more than the jobs that need to be done. As surely as the scooping, sifting, and stirring prevails, Bulldozer's blade droops lower and lower as the day passes without recognition. When the construction whistle signals the end of the work day with a big "Wooot!" all hope is lost until a "Feeef!" and a "Toot! Tweet! Ah-wooo!" signal the start of a surprise birthday party. Rohmann's signature relief (block) prints are a perfect complement to Fleming's earnest tale. The bold black lines of the machines and construction site are balanced by the black framed pages and offset by the trucks' primary colors and variable backgrounds in blues and white. Chunky details, especially the trucks' eyes and the rubble they're tending, make the story come alive. The heavyweight matte paper and relief lettering on the dust jacket add satisfying tactile details to the engaging text and playful illustrations. VERDICT This masterfully crafted story will become a favorite read-aloud choice.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, Oak Bluffs, MA

I had high hopes for this book, as my almost 3 year old is obsessed with trucks and loves reading his other truck books (Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, I'm Dirty, I Stink, etc). But this one was kind of a flop. He asked for it a couple times the first few days, and now rejects it. I can sort of see why. There's not much truck content to it, and the story is pretty weak. I really like the illustrations, but sadly, it's just going to sit on a shelf. If it can't keep the attention of a 3 year old, I can't imagine older kids being interested in it either. It's too bad, I was hoping to add another great book to our nightly line up!

By Bob Walch Help the little yellow bulldozer celebrate his birthday with the other construction equipment in this cute picture book. There's an array of machines to look at here so if your child likes trucks, diggers and other types of equipment this book will be a hit. The text uses dialogue, machine sounds and word repetition so young readers will be able to handle the narrative too. Enjoy!

The story is kind of weaker link of this cooperation By Helpful Advice ‘Bulldozer's Big Day’ written by Candace Fleming and illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Eric Rohmann is a charming book for children aged from 3 to 5 years that through the story of one small busy bulldozer tells the story of friendship and beautiful surprises that friends make for us.At the beginning of this story, a young reader will be introduced to the busy small bulldozer. It’s the best day in the year —his birthday! But there is so much work on the construction site. And it seems that everyone because of work in front of them is being too busy and the birthday is going to be forgotten.Bulldozer will go around trying to see whether his friends really forgot about it and it seems to be the case because they would only respond – it’s a work day, before returning to their work. But when the day will end, there is special surprise for bulldozer that he will never be able to forget…‘Bulldozer's Big Day’ in its style is book similar to the awarded Rohmann’s book – ‘My Friend Rabbit’ though I would say a bit of lower quality if those two are compared. Though the story premise of this one is interesting, for some reason the children are not able to keep their interest for too long. On the other hand, the children fascinated with the construction vehicles would still be able to overcome this drawback primarily because of the Rohmann’s artwork that is again excellent, delivering entertaining and bold illustrations. Therefore, those primarily interested for the artistic part of this children book will certainly not be disappointed, while the story is kind of weaker link of this cooperation. Though I would say 3.5 stars, but taking into consideration the artwork I’m giving four stars hoping that this was only one Fleming’s not so good attempt and that she will not owe to the readers with her next work.

By CJ Queen This book has meanings, origins, and pronunciation for over 1700 names, plus interesting name lists and guides for picking a name. The book is well researched and has few formatting errors (probably caused by the ebook format). The list of banned names makes me wish those people had used this book before picking a name. The only thing that could improve this book is to have even more names. Yes, I want it all. :)

Moby Dick, by Herman Melville

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. For school libraries that support an American literature curriculum, this recording offers a different interpretation of an enduring classic.Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library. Rocky Hill, CT Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In a sense, this work is the piece de resistance of the textual revolution in American scholarship of the past generation. The first half is the final MLA "Approved Text" of the classic novel, prepared under the auspices of the Center for Editions of American Authors. The second half consists of an Historical Note detailing background, genetic composition, publication, and ensuing critical reception; a discussion of its textual history; and some relevant marginalia. The work is not only thorough and rigorous, but, considering the scholarly grittiness of the endeavor, surprisingly lucid and graceful in its exposition. Highly recommended for special collections. Earl Rovit, City Coll., CUNYCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Considerably abridged from what Needle characterizes as Herman Melville's "enormous . . . long and rambling, even obscure" novel, this reworking, with moody illustrations on nearly every page, won't look out of place on a coffee table but still offers plenty of substance. Needle links passages of the original book, ranging in length from one line to several pages, with extended, ruminative summaries and his own comments, which are distinguished by a lighter typeface. Benson ably captures the tale's gloom and grandeur with a plethora of strong character portraits and other illustrations, mostly rendered in shadowed, atmospheric pen and ink, that burst into full color when the white whale arrives on the scene. Closing with a glossary of nautical terms and a labeled cutaway view of a typical whaling ship, this version will appeal to readers who might be after a richer literary experience than Will Eisner offers in his graphic novel retelling (2001) but are still reluctant to immerse themselves in the pleasures of the full-size leviathan. 367 of 381 people found the following review helpful. your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss By Caraculiambro Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:* Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X* The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836* The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. ISBN: 1-59308-018-2THESE HAVE A FOOTNOTES SECTION IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK:* The "Oxford World Classics" edition. About 11 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-19-283385-5* The "Modern Library" edition. About 13 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-679-78327-X* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-24.3724-7 (This is their fancy hardbound version: see next item.)* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-03.9084-7 (This is their paperback edition, which looks totally different but is exactly the same as the previous entry. This claims to be the "definitive text," but any such claim is spurious -- cf. Hayford and Parker [v.s.] for a good discussion of why. Penguin previously came out with an identical-looking but much thicker version annotated by Harold Beaver: the notes for that edition were copious, but on the whole too fanciful and self-indulgent to be of much use.)* The "Library of America" edition. (This is the one included in the same volume with "Redburn" and "White Jacket.") About 9 pp. of notes at the end. Unfortunately, they're a bit skimpy. You see, they're of the "go get it yourself" kind. For example, when Melville writes, "send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger," the footnotes -- the incidence of which is not marked in the running text -- merely says "Luke 16:24". In other words, you've got to look it up yourself. So I would characterize the footnotes as sparse and taciturn: they'll clue you in to the source, but as for the exact wording of something and its accumulated historical connotations, you've got to come up with those yourself. ISBN: 0-940450-09-7THESE HAVE NO FOOTNOTES WHATSOEVER:Why do publishers still print editions of Moby Dick without any footnotes or glossary whatsoever? Who can read it? What a waste of paper. I get so irritated! In any event, the following publishers have decided you'd prefer your white whale raw:* The "Bantam Classic" edition. ISBN: 0-553-21311-3 Ain't got jack.* The "Everyman's Library" edition. ISBN: 0-679-40559-3. Zilch.* The "Penguin 150th Anniversary" edition. ISBN: 0-14-20.0008-6 Bupkiss! Handsome, though.* The "Arion Press" edition. ISBN: 0-520-04354-5. Also annoyingly oversized. And that's my bit of altruism for the week.

It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare. And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment). The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.

The idyll of Blandings Castle is about to be disturbed, for the Hon. Freddie Threepwood is poised to make his debut as a jewel thief. Freddie, however, is not alone: Blandings is simply brimming with criminals and impostors all intent on stealing Aunt Constance's 20,000-pound diamond necklace. It is left to the debonair Psmith, with his usual aplomb, to unscramble the passion, problems, and identities of one and all.

Review "Wodehouse is the funniest writer--that is, the most resourceful and unflagging deliverer of fun--that the human race, a glum crowd, has yet produced." --Anthony Lane, The New Yorker“He who has not met Wodehouse has not lived a full life.”  --San Francisco ChronicleFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

From the Inside Flap One of the most perennially popular of all the Wodehouse titles, Leave it to Psmith, according to Wilfrid Sheed, "helps to usher in the Wodehouse golden age" -- the age of Bertie Wooster and Jeeves, Blandings Castle and all the rest, among whom the ingenious Psmith ("The p is silent, as in phthisis, psychic, and ptarmigan") is entirely worthy to be counted. A debonair young Englishman who has quit the fish business, "even though there is money in fish and decided to support himself by doing anything that he is hired to do by anyone, Psmith, wandering in and out of romantic, suspenseful and invariably hilarious situations, is in the great Wodehouse tradition.

From the Back Cover A Blandings novel

Lady Constance Keeble, sister of Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle, has both an imperious manner and a valuable diamond necklace. The precarious peace of Blandings is shattered when her necklace becomes the object of dark plottings, for within the castle lurk some well-connected jewel thieves – among them the Honourable Freddie Threepwood, Lord Emsworth’s younger son, who wants the reward money to set up a bookmaking business. Psmith, the elegant socialist, is also after it for his newly married chum Mike. And on patrol with the impossible task of bringing management to Blandings is the Efficient Baxter, whose strivings for order lead to a memorable encounter with the castle flowerpots.

Will peace ever return to Blandings Castle...?

For years I have been a huge fan of the farcical Bertie & Jeeves stories. This book also throws some romance and a touch of mystery into the brew. Be careful that you are not in public or that you are not in the middle of having a drink when you reach page 198, because I am warning you - you will erupt into a fit of freakish laughter which probably won't subside for another 5 or 10 minutes, with intermittent relapses thereafter. The eccentric and congenially self-absorbed Wodehousian hero of this novel is Psmith - pronounced with a silent P as in Ptarmigan (he finds that his birth name, Smith, is just too boring). Although he holds a membership to London's six most exclusive clubs and never a wrinkle or misplaced crease did find its way into his impeccable attire, he finds himself in dire financial straits. To make it worse, while lounging in the smoking-room window of the Drones Club, he instantly falls in love with a passing young dainty - but he has no idea how to introduce himself into her society.Yet there might be a solution to his problems through the ad for work-wanted that he recently placed in the Morning Globe. In the caption he expresses the sentiment that he will take on any job whatever (including assassinating Aunts) except for anything relating to fish. You have a problem? "Leave it to Psmith!"He ends up impersonating a well-known Canadian poet in order to introduce himself onto the guest list at beloved Blandings Castle, presided over by the eminent Lord Emsworth. While there he must steal a diamond necklace from under the tireless eye of The Efficient One - Emsworth's flower-pot-wielding secretary Baxter. Enjoy!

Wodehouse novel about Blandings Castle and its inmates, Clarence, ninth earl of Emsworth, his daunting sister, Lady Constance Keeble and Beach, the butler. Fans of later Blandings Castle tales will be a little puzzled by this one. Clarence is obsessed with flowers and gardening rather than pigs. The Empress of Blandings is nowhere in sight. And the main plot catalyst is Psmith, that remarkable public school character from the early Wodehouse novels, rather than Galahad Threepwood or Uncle Fred.Although this is not the best of the Blandings Castle tales, it has one of the best plots and does an effective job of introducing the ongoing characters and jokes. The interrelationships of the characters in the past and present are remarkable for their complexity and present lots of deja vu scenes.Psmith and Clarence are two of Wodehouse's finest creations and the central joy of this book is found in their extended interactions. As usual, love and money are at the bottom of the plot. Psmith cannot bear to be in the fish business any longer and advertises that he will do anything -- even commit a crime -- to get a change of pace. Clarence's son, Freddie Threepwood, contacts Psmith and asks him to help with an inside-the-family theft of his aunt's necklace. Although his uncle is rolling in the stuff, Lady Constance keeps him on a short leash. Freddie's uncle will give her another necklace like the one that's "stolen" and use the money to help Freddie and his uncle's step-daughter Phyllis. Freddie needs the money to attract a bride and Phyllis needs to help her new husband get a start on life.Like the other Blandings Castle stories, the castle is full of imposters. Psmith himself is posing as a poet, but is constantly being unmasked by those who choose to keep his secret for a time.Complications come when Psmith finds himself falling in love with a young woman whom he spies outside the Drones Club needing an umbrella. The young woman turns out to be on her way to Blandings Castle as well. It also turns out that Freddie has been proposing to her, but hasn't worn her down yet. Who will win the fair maiden? The book has some of the funniest scenes in it that you can imagine involving flower pots. It's an inspired beginning to the many jokes that follow in later books about potty people residing at Blandings Castle.Capital. Capital. Capital.

The best of the Psmith series By Paul Donovan "Leave it to Psmith" concludes the evolution of the Psmith character, from Wodehouse's earliest style of writing with the "Schools" genre, to a comic character whose dialogue keeps the reader entertained throughout. This story sees Psmith enter into Blandings Castle, and though Lord Emsworth is not the dominant character he later becomes, flashes of brilliance are visible in his appearances (and in those of Lady Constance, who plays an important role in this book)."Leave it to Psmith" is packed full of witty dialogue, readily suited to Psmith's character, and the traditional Wodehouse farce for the plot (misunderstandings, a stolen necklace, and so forth). The ending is predictable, of course, but this is hardly the point. It is the use of language that makes this such an enjoyable tale. Wodehouse connoisseurs all have their own favourite phrases, or particular sections of books that strike them as humorous from the prolific collection of Wodehouse's works. Suffice to say, several of my personal favourite sections appear in this book - Psmith at the employment agency, or describing his career as a fishmonger spring to mind. Those who enjoy the Blandings or Jeeves and Wooster series would do well to read this book.

Lord I was looking for a nice way to complete a gift package for my wife, and this little set of fill-in booklets was a perfect idea. Being able to fill one out myself, and give her one as a gift that she can surprise me with someday down the road is a fun experience. There were many more pages than I expected, with some well crafted writing prompts that allowed me to vacillate between romantic and funny as I input my responses. One suggestion I have is to provide multiple responses for several of the prompts, as there are numerous lines to write on, and it's more enjoyable to provide several comments/thoughts each time. I'm looking forward to her turn filling it out (if she so chooses) sometime in the future.Final thought: given the price of regular cards these days, something like this, for a few dollars more, is a much better purchase in my opinion.

Love Beyond Kindness: Understanding Love in Others and Achieving Happiness and Fulfillment

This book is all about providing readers with the right knowledge and understanding of how important it is to show love of others through kindness. It also aims to provide a clear differentiation of kindness to other and love. Love, despite its commonality in terms of usage, is one of the most misunderstood words. And despite having read so many books, articles and even its meanings in the dictionary, people still misinterpret love as the feeling that purely based on emotions and the attachment of a person to one or more individuals, such as a partner in life, siblings, children, relatives and friends. And the same goes for kindness. This book would like to help readers understand that kindness can be based on different things, not on love alone. One can be kind to others, but does not mean that he or she is in love with the person; however, for one to be able to express true love, that person should be able to show selfless kindness, compassion and concern towards others. This book will help you: • Understand the difference between the concepts of love and kindness. • Learn what self-less love is all about • Know the benefits of unconditional love. • Discover how self-less love and kindness can help a person achieve happiness and fulfillment in life and in their relationships with others. • Find out more about how to show love and kindness to others. This book, aims to touch hearts and open the minds of readers to not just pass the word love around, but rather show the people their love that they are valued and cared for. Do not delay and download this book today!

Acts of Random Kindness: Spread Love and Happiness with Good Deeds in 100 Days

Have you ever smiled at a stranger and watched their face brighten? That is a random act of kindness. Have you ever paid for someone’s groceries just because? That is a random act of kindness as well. Some acts are kind of small and they seem like they don’t matter but they do! They matter to someone. Look, we can’t all leave millions of dollars to a children’s hospital or build a library in a community that no longer has one but we can all do little things that make someone else’s day just a little brighter. And that is what this book is all about. Unlike other “acts of kindness” books you are going to find a looser structure here. You won’t find Day One: do this because this is real life and that means you need a little flexibility to work with. So, instead consider this a guide, a gentle suggestion on what you might like to do or ways to incorporate more kindness into your life. In this book you will learn: • The many types of acts of kindness from the very simple to the large. • How many of these acts require nothing more than a bit of time, no money needed. • How to move to some of the larger scale acts and help more people at once. • How these actions will help you in the process. Kindness is contagious. If one person is kind to someone who needs it they will be more likely to be kind to someone in return and so on. Hopefully this book will help you see that you can do more with a smile and a kind word than you ever thought would be possible.
