From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Fleming and Rohmann team up for their second picture book in celebration of Bulldozer's birthday. He zooms across the construction site in joyous anticipation of his big day only to discover that every construction truck he greets is too busy to acknowledge anything more than the jobs that need to be done. As surely as the scooping, sifting, and stirring prevails, Bulldozer's blade droops lower and lower as the day passes without recognition. When the construction whistle signals the end of the work day with a big "Wooot!" all hope is lost until a "Feeef!" and a "Toot! Tweet! Ah-wooo!" signal the start of a surprise birthday party. Rohmann's signature relief (block) prints are a perfect complement to Fleming's earnest tale. The bold black lines of the machines and construction site are balanced by the black framed pages and offset by the trucks' primary colors and variable backgrounds in blues and white. Chunky details, especially the trucks' eyes and the rubble they're tending, make the story come alive. The heavyweight matte paper and relief lettering on the dust jacket add satisfying tactile details to the engaging text and playful illustrations. VERDICT This masterfully crafted story will become a favorite read-aloud choice.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, Oak Bluffs, MA

I had high hopes for this book, as my almost 3 year old is obsessed with trucks and loves reading his other truck books (Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, I'm Dirty, I Stink, etc). But this one was kind of a flop. He asked for it a couple times the first few days, and now rejects it. I can sort of see why. There's not much truck content to it, and the story is pretty weak. I really like the illustrations, but sadly, it's just going to sit on a shelf. If it can't keep the attention of a 3 year old, I can't imagine older kids being interested in it either. It's too bad, I was hoping to add another great book to our nightly line up!

By Bob Walch Help the little yellow bulldozer celebrate his birthday with the other construction equipment in this cute picture book. There's an array of machines to look at here so if your child likes trucks, diggers and other types of equipment this book will be a hit. The text uses dialogue, machine sounds and word repetition so young readers will be able to handle the narrative too. Enjoy!

The story is kind of weaker link of this cooperation By Helpful Advice ‘Bulldozer's Big Day’ written by Candace Fleming and illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Eric Rohmann is a charming book for children aged from 3 to 5 years that through the story of one small busy bulldozer tells the story of friendship and beautiful surprises that friends make for us.At the beginning of this story, a young reader will be introduced to the busy small bulldozer. It’s the best day in the year —his birthday! But there is so much work on the construction site. And it seems that everyone because of work in front of them is being too busy and the birthday is going to be forgotten.Bulldozer will go around trying to see whether his friends really forgot about it and it seems to be the case because they would only respond – it’s a work day, before returning to their work. But when the day will end, there is special surprise for bulldozer that he will never be able to forget…‘Bulldozer's Big Day’ in its style is book similar to the awarded Rohmann’s book – ‘My Friend Rabbit’ though I would say a bit of lower quality if those two are compared. Though the story premise of this one is interesting, for some reason the children are not able to keep their interest for too long. On the other hand, the children fascinated with the construction vehicles would still be able to overcome this drawback primarily because of the Rohmann’s artwork that is again excellent, delivering entertaining and bold illustrations. Therefore, those primarily interested for the artistic part of this children book will certainly not be disappointed, while the story is kind of weaker link of this cooperation. Though I would say 3.5 stars, but taking into consideration the artwork I’m giving four stars hoping that this was only one Fleming’s not so good attempt and that she will not owe to the readers with her next work.
