10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Best New Sci-Fi I've Read By Suzume I stayed up all night to finish this one. This is, hands down, the best book I've read in the last few years (and I read a lot.) The setting is fresh and combines the post-apocalyptic landscape of The Road or The Hunger Games with the epic underworld journeys from Percy Jackson and the high-tech, chaotic, war-torn world of Halo. All that is packed into 250 pages, too! Best of all? Those YA and sci-fi cliches you're sick of are all gone. I rarely pick up a book that can surprise me at every turn, but this one did. I highly, highly recommend this one.

She is badly wounded.So begins a tale unlike any other. In this dystopian world ghosts plague the living, but also hold out the promise of knowledge from the civilization of their forefathers, now four hundred years dead. Wasp, as the Avatar of the Goddess Catchkeep on Earth, is both warrior and magician. Marked at birth as her servant, Wasp, as an Upstart, killed her predecessor to become Archivist. For three years she has killed eight Upstarts in order to remain Archivist and serve the Goddess. Many times she has tried to escape from the torture of her servitude. Each time she has been dragged back by the parasitic Catchkeep Priest and his dogs. She has grown tired of the killing to stay alive, and is now even reluctant to destroy the shades. Lately she has been letting them go.Now, in the arena, she has lost her knife. It would be so easy just to let the Upstart cut her throat...

I've read many--particularly in the SF/F genres. What I crave most are books with quality writing. You won't have boring sections in this. You won't have cheesy, teenage romance. Every word counts. The tension builds. The women characters are strong willed and compassionate, determined and loyal. ARACHAVIST WASP would make an excellent graphic novel or movie. As a book it's a kick to the teeth: rich with imagination, spunk, emotion and adventure.
