From the author of the National Book Award nominee A TANGLE OF KNOTS comes an inspiring novel about figuring out who you are and doing what you love.Albie has never been the smartest kid in his class. He has never been the tallest. Or the best at gym. Or the greatest artist. Or the most musical. In fact, Albie has a long list of the things he's not very good at. But then Albie gets a new babysitter, Calista, who helps him figure out all of the things he is good at and how he can take pride in himself.A perfect companion to Lisa Graff's National Book Award-nominated A Tangle of Knots, this novel explores a similar theme in a realistic contemporary world where kids will easily be able to relate their own struggles to Albie's. Great for fans of Rebecca Stead's Liar and Spy, RJ Palacio's Wonder and Cynthia Lord's Rules.Praise for Lisa Graff's novelsTangle of Knots (nominated for a National Book Award)* "Combining the literary sensibility of E. B. White with the insouciance of Louis Sachar, Graff has written a tangle that should satisfy readers for years to come."--Booklist, starred reviewDouble Dog Dare"Graff's...story is lighthearted and humorous, but honestly addresses the emotions associated with divorce. Her characters' voices, interactions, and hangups are relatable, as they battle each other and adjust to their families' reconfigurations."--Publishers Weekly

Absolutely Almost, by Lisa Graff

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Albie, an only child living in New York City, has learning difficulties. No matter how hard he tries to give the correct change to the takeout delivery guy, or get all his spelling words correct, he inevitably fails to get it right. When readers meet the fifth-grader, he's just left his fancy private school and is about to be the new kid at public school. His dad is mostly absent and forgetful, except when demanding that Albie try harder. His mom tells him that Dav Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" (Scholastic) is for babies, and gives him Esther Forbes's Johnny Tremain instead. His exacting Korean grandfather predicts that he will end up in a ditch. At school, despite some sympathetic teachers, he is bullied and teased. His only friend is Betsy, reserved and bullied herself. Things begin to change when Albie gets a new babysitter. Calista is an artist and definitely unusual: she makes a cover for Albie's Captain Underpants that says "Johnny Tremain." She takes him for donuts and to art exhibits and, most importantly, she likes him for who he is. Albie's just-believable naiveté leads him into social difficulties as he is given an opportunity to be one of the "cool" kids, even though this entails abandoning his friendship with Betsy. Despite the fact that Graff is scrupulously honest in refusing to provide a conveniently happy ending, Albie comes through significant emotional hardship to a genuine sense of self-worth. Albie himself would find this book inviting at first glance: short chapters, an accessible sans serif font, and plenty of white space, and even his mom might think it acceptable for a fifth grader.—Sue Giffard, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York City

From Booklist *Starred Review* Albie almost understands why he is starting fifth grade at a new school. It’s got something to do with the things he can’t quite do, like subtract numbers inside his head or figure out the words in books. Fortunately, Albie also gets a kindhearted new sitter named Calista, who can turn Albie’s sadness into happiness simply through the magic of donuts. But even Calista can’t stop the mean kid at school from calling Albie names, or make Albie’s parents see how hard he tries in school. As every kid knows, some problems take more than donuts to solve. Graff (A Tangle of Knots, 2013) creates a heartfelt portrait of a child searching for nothing more than a safe place to thrive. The story is parsed into short chapters that can stand alone as mini-stories, perfect for young readers who aren’t ready to tackle full pages of text. This format is also well suited to presenting the incremental steps of Albie’s evolution from bewildered victim to hero of his own story. Beautifully written, Albie’s story is accessible and dignified, with a gentle message that will touch any reader’s heart. Middle-grade readers will love the references to Dav Pilkey’s inexhaustibly popular Captain Underpants series, which has introduced so many children to the fun side of reading. A perfect book to share with struggling readers. Grades 4-6. --Diane Colson

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Johnny Tremain vs. Captain Underpants By E. R. Bird In the stage musical of “Matilda”, lyricist Tim Minchin begins the show with the following lines about the state of children today: “Specialness is de rigueur. / Above average is average. Go fig-ueur! / Is it some modern miracle of calculus / That such frequent miracles don't render each one un-miraculous?” This song ran on a bit of a loop through my cranium as I read Lisa Graff latest middle grade novel “Absolutely Almost”. For parents, how well your child does reflects right back on you. Your child is a genius? Congratulations! You must be a genius for raising a genius. Your child is above average? Kudos to you. Wait, your child is average? Uh-oh. For some parents nothing in the world could be more embarrassing. We all want our kids to do well in school, but where do you distinguish between their happiness and how hard you’re allowed to push them to do their best? Do you take kindness into account when you’re adding up all their other sterling qualities? Maybe the wonder of “Absolutely Almost” is that it’s willing to give us an almost unheard of hero. Albie is not extraordinary in any possible way and he would like you to be okay with that. The question then is whether or not child readers will let him.Things aren’t easy for Albie. He’s not what you’d call much of a natural at anything. Reading and writing is tough. Math’s a headache. He’s not the world’s greatest artist and he’s not going to win any awards for his wit. That said, Albie’s a great kid. If you want someone kind and compassionate, he’s your man. When he finds himself with a new babysitter, a girl named Calista who loves art, he’s initially skeptical. She soon wins him over, though, and good thing too since there are a lot of confusing things going on in his life. One day he’s popular and another he’s not. He’s been kicked out of his old school thanks to his grades. Then there’s the fact that his best friend is part of a reality show . . . well, things aren’t easy for Albie. But sometimes, when you’re not the best at anything, you can make it up to people by simply being the best kind of person.Average people are tough. They don’t naturally lend themselves to great works of literature generally unless they’re a villain or the butt of a joke. Lots of heroes are billed as “average heroes” but how average are they really? Put another way, would they ever miscalculate a tip? Our fantasy books are full to overflowing of average kids finding out that they’re extraordinary (Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Meg Murry, etc.). Now imagine that the book kept them ordinary. Where do you go from there? Credit where credit is due to Lisa Graff then. The literary challenge of retaining a protagonist’s everyday humdrum status is intimidating. Graff wrestles with the idea and works it to her advantage. For example, the big momentous moment in this book is when it turns out that Albie doesn’t have dyslexia and just isn’t good at reading. I’ve never seen that in a book for kids before, and it was welcome. It made it clear what kind of book we're dealing with.As a librarian who has read a LOT of children’s books starring “average” kids, I kept waiting for that moment when Albie discovered he had a ridiculously strong talent for, say, ukulele or poker or something. It never came. It never came and I was left realizing that it was possible that it never would. Kids are told all the time that someday they’ll find that thing that’ll make them unique. Well what if they don’t? What happens then? “Absolutely Almost” is willing to tell them the truth. There’s a wonderful passage where Calista and Albie are discussing the fact that he may never find something he’s good at. Calista advises, “Find something you’d want to keep doing forever… even if you stink at it. And then, if you’re lucky, with lots of practice, then one day you won’t stink so much.” Albie points out, correctly, that he might still stink at it and what then? Says Calista, “Then won’t you be glad you found something you love?”Mind you, average heroes run a big risk. “Absolutely Almost” places the reader in a difficult position. More than one kid is going to find themselves angry with Albie for being dense. But the whole point of the book is that he’s just not the sharpest pencil in the box. Does that make the reader sympathetic then to his plight or a bully by proxy? It’s the age-old problem of handing the reader the same information as the hero but allowing them to understand more than that hero. If you’re smarter than the person you’re reading about, does that make you angry or understanding? I suppose it depends on the reader and the extent to which they can relate to Albie’s problem. Still, I would love to sit in on a kid book discussion group as they talked about Albie. Seems to me there will be a couple children who find their frustration with his averageness infuriating. The phrase “Choose Kind” has been used to encourage kids not to bully kids that look different than you. I’d be interested in a campaign that gave as much credence to encouraging kids not to bully those other children that aren’t as smart as they are.I’ve followed the literary career of Lisa Graff for years and have always enjoyed her books. But with “Absolutely Almost” I really feel like she’s done her best work. The book does an excellent job of showing without telling. For example, Albie discusses at one point how good he is at noticing things then relates a teacher’s comment that, “if you had any skill at language, you might’ve made a very fine writer.” Graff then simply has Albie follow up that statement with a simple “That’s what she said.” You’re left wondering if he picked up on the inherent insult (or was it just a truth?) in that. Almost in direct contrast, in a rare moment of insight, his dad says something about Albie that’s surprising in its accuracy. “I think the hard thing for you, Albie… is not going to be getting what you want in life, but figuring out what that is.” I love a book that has the wherewithal to present these different sides of a single person. Such writing belies the idea that what Graff is doing here is simple.Reading the book as a parent, I could see how my experience with “Absolutely Almost” was different from that of a kid reader. Take the character of Calista, for example. She’s a very sympathetic babysitter for Albie who does a lot of good for him, offering support when no one else understands. Yet she’s also just a college kid with a poorly defined sense of when to make the right and wrong choice. Spoiler Alert on the rest of this paragraph. When Albie’s suffering terribly she takes him out of school to go to the zoo and then fails to tell his parents about this executive decision on her part. A couple chapters later Albie’s mom finds out about the outing and Calista’s gone from their lives. The mom concludes that she can’t have a babysitter who lies to her and that is 100% correct. A kid reader is going to be angry with the mom, but parents, teachers, and librarians are going to be aware that this is one of those unpopular but necessary moves a parent has to face all the time. It’s part of being an adult. Sorry, kids. Calista was great, but she was also way too close to being a manic pixie dream babysitter. And trust me when I say you don’t want to have a manic pixie dream babysitter watching your children.Remember the picture book “Leo the Late Bloomer” where a little tiger cub is no good at anything and then one day, somewhat magically, he’s good at EVERYTHING? “Absolutely Almost” is the anti-“Leo the Late Bloomer”. In a sense, the point of Graff’s novel is that oftentimes kindness outweighs intelligence. I remember a friend of mine in college once commenting that he would much rather that people be kind than witty. At the time this struck me as an incredible idea. I’d always gravitated towards people with a quick wit, so the idea of preferring kindness seemed revolutionary. I’m older now, but the idea hasn’t gone away. Nor is it unique to adulthood. Albie’s journey doesn’t reach some neat and tidy little conclusion by this story’s end, but it does reach a satisfying finish. Life is not going to be easy for Albie, but thanks to the lessons learned here, you’re confident that he’s gonna make it through. Let’s hope other average kids out there at least take heart from that. A hard book to write. An easy book to read. For ages 9-12

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. An Important Book By Travis Ann Sherman Albie's mom tells him not to tip more than $5 to the deliveryman from the Chinese restaurant. Albie's very friendly. He loves seeing the guy, who remembers his name, and they exchange cheery greetings. He likes getting the delivery and he's just a little sad when his mother fusses at him about because he tipped $12.But the numbers just get muddled in his head.A lot just gets muddled in his head. He doesn't have an easy time fitting in socially either, but that kind of storyline, about dealing with bullies, is one we've read before. Absolutely Almost gets inside the head of a likeable, pleasant kid who is struggling hard with school and his parents because he just isn't getting it at the rate everyone else is. His father expects him to make A's because anything else is just not acceptable. He studies and studies for his weekly spelling test, but still can only get 4 right. By the end of the book, he triumphs; he gets 7 right.A Kirkus reviewer said this was a good book to give to a reluctant reader, but I would say it is an important book to give to our brightest young readers. Compassion is best learned at an early age, and it is best learned by getting inside the head of another. Absolutely Almost, like Wonder, and like Out of My Mind, is the kind of book that lets a reader glimpse the inner workings of someone else. Albie is good and kind and likeable. We need to make sure the world reminds a friendly place to the Albies.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely loved it! By Dolores, a teacher For the first half of this book, I absolutely almost loved it. But as Albie's story continued to bounce back and forth between heartbreaking and uplifting, I found myself absolutely 100% loving it.Albie's spirit and unique insights will teach children the importance of being kind and adults, the significance of a well placed reassuring word.

Lena is Trille’s best friend, even if she is a girl. And there is never an ordinary day when you’ve got a best friend like Lena.Hardly a day passes without Trille and Lena inventing some kind of adventure that often ends in trouble. Whether it’s coaxing a cow onto a boat or sledding down the steepest and iciest hill with a chicken, there is always a thrill—and sometimes an injury—to be had. Trille loves to share everything with Lena, even Auntie Granny’s waffles. But when Lena has to move away and Auntie Granny leaves the world, it sometimes seems like nothing will ever be right again. The warmth of friendship and the support of family suffuse this lightly illustrated novel, proving that when times are tough, a little taste of sweetness can make all the difference.

Adventures with Waffles, by Maria Parr

From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—In this delightful Norwegian import, two friends, a boy nicknamed Trille and his best friend, Lena, get into some hair-raising, frequently hilarious, and, sometimes, injury-inducing escapades over the course of a year. Narrated by Trille in a realistically childlike, first-person voice, the novel is fresh and fast-paced. While readers will chuckle at the friends' adventures—and marvel at their chutzpah—their mouths will also water at the frequency with which waffles, clearly a popular Norwegian treat, figure into the story. Children will relate to Trille's anxiety about whether he is Lena's best pal, a worry extinguished in a final, harrowing episode that, fortunately, ends well. Silhouettes, featured on the charming cover, also highlight chapter openings and provide a cozy, friendly feel. Readers may occasionally be put off by Lena's portrayal as too proud, stubborn, and reckless for her own good, but they'll appreciate her resourcefulness and strength of character anyway. Purchasers should note some religious overtones and Christian references. VERDICT Recommended for public and school libraries, this will be useful as supplementary material in units about day-to-day life in another country.—Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY

Lowry My 14 year old daughter read this book and I kept hearing loud peals of laughter coming from her room. She reads voraciously and kept telling me this was the best book she had read in a long, long time. My husband read it outloud to the family--we laughed often and cried together at the end. Such a good story about friendship, about wanting a father, about loving extended family, about being young, about being old. Please read this book.

Smith This book is a collection of writings from the Roman Catholics Francois Fenelon, Michael Molinos, and Madame Guyon. It's good, deep stuff dealing on the topics of the cross and prayer. The writings are not broken into a "daily devotional" format as the title may lead one to believe, but the book can be read in such a way since it is broken down into "small bits."The book has three sections: Way of the Cross, Drawing Inward, and Stepping Into His Presence. Within each section, each "author" is given about ten small chapters (usually no more than a couple pages). Most of Guyon's writings come from the SeedSower's book edited by Edwards called, Experiencing The Depths of Jesus Chrsit Through Prayer, so buying this book will offer nothing new from Guyon if you already have the other book. I'm guessing that the writings from Molinos comes from his, The Spiritual Guide. There is very little scripture in this book, but what is taught is very, very good (of course, not everyone may agree with what is written). The chapters deal with the cross, suffering, real prayer, inward prayer, silence, meditation on scripture, listening to God, knowing God, love, and beholding the Lord, among others. The book also includes short biographies of the three authors.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great series!! By angela This is a paranormal short story. This is book two in The Forest of bleeding trees series. I recommend readers to read the first book The Hunter to understand this book, The Prey picks up where the last book ended. This is for adults only, due to the sexual content. Once again I was fascinated with the characters, especially Johnny he is such a dependable person. He tries so hard, but it seems everywhere he turns trouble lays awaiting.Johnny knows one thing, you never betray the ones whom have helped your family. Those people are rare, they have made his life easier, something he will never forget. Johnny learns he has powers and without Lili he would have never discovered them. But for some reason he never questioned her about anything. Now strange incidents start to happen, and unexplained deaths start occurring. Maybe he has not been able to see the truth before him due to his strange connection to Lili.favorite passages:"His feelings unthawed and he was starting to shake a bit.""A cacophony of bird calls arose into a collective shout that was practically deafening.""A silent trek through the trees and underbrush followed, the shuffling sound of their footfalls punctuated only by the occasional snap of branches and underbrush, the harsh screech of a barn owl, or the sorrowful cry of a mourning dove.""Sitting around the table, the adults smiling as the younger members of the family squabbled and everyone ate their fill-it made them feel like millionaires.""Her skin looked pasty pale, her dark eyes standing out in bold relief, and her blue black hair was loose, blowing in the wind.""He continued sweating profusely, but only because he was as nervous as a dog s*****g razor blades.""And you never betray the people who have helped you and your kin."

Mattern has out done themselves again. This is a wonderful read. It keeps you on your toes with many twist and turns but also doesn't reveal everything. Last book left off on a cliffhanger and does pick up there so you get answers but if you had questions during the middle of the book you didn't get all the answers- what is the fun in that huh? it isn't fun. I enjoy a wild ride. Even though Johnny finds out little by little what is really going on, he is still confuse. Mattern has very good character build on all major AND minor characters involved. Thank you once again for a terrific book. *Goddess*

In the meantime, he is working for her family and restoring their old house.Secrets come out about Katrina, strange events occur, and murders arise that are reminiscent of past murders!I adore this series and the author who writes it! The Mask of Power: Cynder Confronts the Weather Wizard #5 (Skylanders Universe), by Onk Beakman

About the Author Onk Beakman has devoted his life to chronicling the greatest adventures of the Skylanders. Though he was hatched on the icy wastes of Skylands’s Frozen Desert, this book-loving penguin now lives in a shack on the beautiful sands of Blistering Beach with his two pet cucumbers.

Onk Beakman knew he wanted to be a world-famous author from the moment he was hatched. In fact, the book-loving penguin was so excited that he wrote his first novel while still inside his egg (to this day, nobody is entirely sure where he got the tiny pencil and notebook from).

Growing up on the icy wastes of Skylands’ Frozen Desert was difficult for a penguin who hated the cold. While his brothers plunged into the freezing waters, Onk could be found with his beak buried in a book and a pen clutched in his flippers.

Yet his life changed forever when a giant floating head appeared in the skies above the tundra. It was Kaos, attempting to melt the icecaps so he could get his grubby little hands on an ancient weapon buried beneath the snow.

Onk watched open-beaked as Spyro swept in and sent the evil Portal Master packing. From that day, Onk knew that he must chronicle the Skylanders’ greatest adventures. He traveled the length and breadth of Skylands, collecting every tale he could find about Master Eon’s brave champions.

Today, Onk writes from a shack on the beautiful sands of Blistering Beach with his two pet sea cucumbers.

Chapter One

“Oh yeah,” said Zook, reaching for another coconut drink. “This is the life, right, Cynder?”

Beside the Bambazooker, the dark purple dragon shifted uncomfortably beneath the shade of a large umbrella.

“Speak for yourself, Bamboo Boy,” she said with a sigh. “Remind me again why we’re lying on a beach?”

“To soak up the sun, why else?” The green-barked Life Skylander slurped the creamy coconut milk noisily. “This is the Cloudless Desert, the sunniest spot in all of Skylands. Just kick back and relax, that’s all.”

“And you don’t feel guilty that we’re wasting our time when we should be out looking for the next segment of the Mask of Power?” Cynder snapped, her scaly brow furrowing. She glanced around, taking in the countless Mabu out enjoying a day in the sun. Didn’t they realize the danger they were all in? Kaos was trying to reassemble the fabled Mask of Power. If he managed it . . .

“Hey, hey, hey, just chill,” insisted Zook, settling back in his deck chair. “If Master Eon needs us, he knows where to find us.”

The buzz of the happy vacationers was broken by a sharp crack that sounded like the universe being pulled in two. Cynder was immediately on her feet. She knew that sound. It was a Portal!

She spun around to see a column of light blaze into existence. A figure materialized at its heart. It was tall, regal, and more than a little spooky.

Cynder grinned. Zook wanted to chill and you couldn’t get more chilling than this new arrival: Hex!

The elven sorceress swept from the Portal, her piercing gaze passing over the beach.

All around, there were gasps and even a few whimpers. Like Cynder, Hex was an Undead Skylander—a mistress of dark magic and feared by many. Hex’s ghost-white eyes shimmered as she watched the vacationers frantically pack up their towels and beach chairs, deciding that there was something else they’d rather be doing. Like getting trapped in a spider-infested cave or fed to a pack of zombies.

“What’s up, Hexy?” called Zook in greeting. “You here to catch the rays?” The Bambazooker peeked over his pair of ridiculously large sunglasses. “You do look like you could use a tan.”

Hex’s narrow mouth turned down at the corners. She wasn’t known for her sense of humor. She was known for striking fear into everyone’s hearts, which was quite different.

“Master Eon needs you,” she replied, her voice like wind whistling through a graveyard. “You’ll have to ‘catch the rays’ another time.” Her disgust at the very concept was obvious. Hex was more at home in moonlight than in the warmth of the sun.

“Is it the mask?” Cynder said eagerly, feeling an electric thrill run through her wings. “Has Eon located the next segment?”

But Hex didn’t answer. Instead she peered into the sky, a puzzled look on her ashen face.

“I thought this place was known as the Cloudless Desert?” she commented, floating up from the blisteringly hot sands.

“Yeah, that’s right,” Zook confirmed contentedly. “Not a cloud in the sky.”

“Except that one,” Hex muttered, cocking her head to the side in curiosity.

Cynder followed the witch’s gaze. She was right. A tiny cloud had appeared in the expanse of brilliant blue. A cloud that was growing, and growing fast. A shadow fell over the sands as the three Skylanders gazed up in amazement. In a matter of seconds the cloud had smothered the sky, becoming darker with every passing minute.

“Hey, who turned off the sun?” complained Zook, throwing aside his shades and snatching up his bazooka. Fun-loving and carefree he may have been, but Zook recognized a threat when he saw one.

So did Cynder. Her expression was darkening as quickly as the sky. This was no natural storm.

“It is the power of Darkness,” cried Hex. She threw her arms out wide, and crackling phantom orbs appeared in her upturned palms. “The forces of nature have turned against us.”

Cynder felt a drop of rain on her nose, followed by another. A moment later, the heavens opened, and water lashed down from those strange storm clouds.

“It could just be a quick shower,” joked Zook, ever the eternal optimist. “I mean, who ever got hurt by a few drops of rain?”

There was a scream from their left. The Skylanders turned to see a Mabu sinking into the soggy sand. He was already up to his waist in the quagmire. All around, fleeing vacationers were getting stuck, before getting dragged beneath the dunes.

Cynder could feel the grip of the wet ground pulling her claws down into a clammy embrace.

“We need to do something,” she yelled, flapping her leathery wings to pull herself free with a wet squelch. “The dunes are turning into quicksand. Everyone is going to be sucked underground!”

Chapter Two

Cynder soared through the air, snatching a sun-worshipping Mabu from the cloying quicksand and flying him to safety. The rain beat down on her wings the whole time, making it difficult to fly. She wouldn’t be able to rescue them all.

“Zook!” she cried out, spotting another Mabu—who was wearing a flowery sunhat—almost vanishing beneath the surface. “Behind you!”

The Bambazooker turned, his eyes growing wide when he spotted the stricken Mabu. “Hang on, little buddy,” he shouted out as he splashed through the quagmire.

“T-to what?” stammered the horrified tourist.

“To these!” Zook clapped his hands together and bamboo shoots erupted around the sinking Mabu from beneath the sand. Usually, Zook used his foliage barriers for protection—today they would be a lifeline.

“Great idea, Zook,” Cynder called down. “Can you summon them all over the beach?”

“No problem,” the Bambazooker yelled back, spinning in a circle. “Let’s Zook it up!”

Bamboo shoots popped up here, there, and everywhere.

“Grab hold of the bamboo,” Cynder yelled to the Mabu who were still floundering in the mud. “And hang on to them until I can get to you.”

“The rain is getting worse,” Zook pointed out. “I’m not sure how long the bamboo will last.”

“Long enough,” murmured Hex, rising up into the air, sinister wreaths of emerald smoke swirling around her hands.

“For what?” Zook asked.

“For the Darkness to fall!” Hex cried out, reaching her hands up to the heavens. Smoke bloomed from her open palms, shooting into the clouds above as the elven witch recited a spell in a language not spoken for thousands upon thousands of years. There was a loud CRACK, and the sky flashed a brilliant green. Even Cynder had to look away from the sudden unnatural flare.

When the dragon looked again the clouds were scuttling away like giant, fluffy spiders.

“Hey, hows about that?” Zook laughed. “Instant summer. Heh-heh!”

Sure enough, beams of sunlight were poking through the retreating clouds, the rain clearing away to nothing.

Not that heros had time to bask in the sun. “Quick, everyone,” Cynder snapped, snatching a Mabu out of the drying dunes. “Get clear of the sand before it gets baked hard by the heat. You don’t want to get stuck.”

The only "bad" thing was when the book ended!! I now feel like I am one of the neighbors in Port Gamble, and involved in everything that is going on!!! The questions, emotions, the parents flying in from England..wow..wow. The pictures that are painted are so vivid and real!! His characters just keep evolving and growing and I want to know what they are doing, now! I can't wait for the next book! (But in the meantime have another couple of Gregg's to read). If you haven't read ENVY or BETRAYAL yet, you must add them to your booklist!

I was beyond ecstatic when I got an ARC of this book when I was still working at the book store. I literally did a happy dance. No joke, you can ask my old boss Josh. He was like... what are you doing? I was having an extremely crappy day too. Then I opened that magical box and the book was all like *holy sound effects* "I am here to make your day." And make my day it did. I thought it was going to be impossible to outdo the first book in the series, Envy (read my review HERE) but this one literally blew it out of the water. I seriously worship the hell out of Gregg Olsen and I want to shake his amazing hand.Uhm, is this cover not seriously breathtaking? I do feel that due to the details in the story she should be covered in blood, but there is a dark aura around this girl and it reeled me in like the smell of a home cooked meal on Christmas. If I had to compare covers with the first one, Envy would take it simply because of the creep factor. Envy's cover is a dead chick in a bathtub and all you can see is her hair flowing over the edge. I didn't even read the synopsis for it before I grabbed it. I love love LOVE a book cover that can do that! I'm a color junkie also. While Envy had a green theme to it, this one has more of a blue flow throughout the background. It's like Greg crawled inside my head and put everything I could possibly want in a book together.Olivia Grant is a beautiful foreign exchange student who has quickly joined the popular ranks at her new school. During a Halloween party at her new bestie Brianna's house, she meets her untimely death. Suddenly the school is on high alert and the cops don't have a clue as to who did it. Brianna is running around making out with her boyfriend like nothing is wrong, and Olivia's mom seems to only be worried about the inconvenience of this situation happening to her family. The twins are back and better than ever. There are more twists and secrets to be revealed in this sleepy little town. Things will never be the same. Why would anyone want to kill this pretty girl? Was her jump to popularity too fast for someone? Or was it a sick plot to get attention? This story will pull you in and hold you down until the very end. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, it doesn't.Olsen has a unique way of taking a true story and creating a fascinating young adult novel out of it. I have a degree in Criminal Justice so I really enjoy the "who did it" type books and the details behind it, but I haven't come across many like this in the young adult genre. Olsen is definitely a master at his art and his writing style has a mind of its own. He ties up every loose end and no stone is left unturned. Not only are you able to read a fascinating story but you want to know about the original one that ignited Olsen's brilliant mind to write about it. I'm looking forward to what will happen in the rest of this series. I know I say this a lot but this is absolutely one of my favorites. Murder mixed with teenage drama with a little bit of paranormal added. Seriously, I couldn't ask for more! I... love... these... books.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another Intricate YA Mystery in the Series! By Stephanie Ward 'Betrayal' is the second book in a young adult mystery series that is centered in Port Gamble, a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Twins Taylor and Hayley Ryan find themselves in the middle of the murder investigation of a fellow classmate - British exchange student Olivia Grant. Will Taylor and Hayley be able to figure out who killed Olivia and why before someone else gets hurt?Just like the first book in the series, the second installment is an incredibly well written and fast paced mystery jam packed with twists. The plot is very engrossing and had me hooked from the first pages. I was always trying to figure out who the killer was and what would happen next in the story. The paranormal aspect with Taylor and Hayley adds an added dimension to the series that I find really interesting. The characters are all fully rounded with unique personalities that make them easy to identify with. The plot is well executed and written in a way that makes it feel realistic - even more so since it features real crime solving techniques. Aside from the enthralling mystery, the novel deals with hard real-life issues like family, friendship, trust, betrayal, and morality. Fans of the first book in the series will love this new installment, as well as fans of mysteries in general.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Martin Tobi, a doctor, and Ryan, a police officer, spend most of their time telling each other how they want each other but then agreeing that they must wait. I found myself skipping pages because I had read the same theme so many times I could not take it anymore. I found the writing to be too predictable, choppy, and frankly immature. I could not believe that there were readers who gave this one a five. They obviously have not read books by Radclyffe, Black, Vali, Good, Hill, Herring...just to name a few outstanding lesbian writer. This book will be passed on.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. The cover is a lie. It's not romantic or thrilling. Horrible By N. theriault When I bought this book K Johnson had the only review and it was a 5. Had I read any of the other reviews I could have saved myself some misery. I don't know why I have this sick need to finish a book I've started. I need to get help for that.As mentioned in another review, they spend a bunch of time making out and talking about their attraction to each other but they always stop before anything happens. I'm pretty sure that they are living together for months before they finally have sex. Now that I think about it I guess they could count that as suspense. The cop is a whimp who is always crying about how Stacey left her for another woman after they were together for 2 years. Let me open the book and very quickly find an example of how bad it was. (took me about 5 seconds to find one. Here ya go:Why can't you accept that she isn't another Stacey?I never said she was.Come on you know that's exactly what was going through your mind last night. No that is not what was going through my mind.Well than Sergeant Smarty Pants, why don't you enlighten me?For your information, I was just concerned that I always seem to mess things up.You are afraid to open yourself up to Tobi because you know it would hurt like a son of a bitch if she were to leave you. It's just... what I feel for her is so different than anything I've ever felt before.BLAH BLAH BLAH. If the character is hurting make me feel it, don't just write out. I felt like I was reading the book she wrote as some kind of therapy.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Good book, especially as a first title. By Meredith McLaughlin This book is listed as a "romantic thriller". It is a lesbian romance novel. There is a bit of a mystery involved. No, it's not likely that anything in this book is a great surprise but overall it kept me reading, the characters were believable and likeable and the writing was well done. I did finish the whole book and found it to be an enjoyable read. No, there's not going to be any great intellectual puzzles but if you're looking for a bit of escapist fiction, I don't think this book will let you down. Overall, an author I'd be happy to see more from.

I uploaded this book to her Kindle app on Friday night and Sunday afternoon she informed me that she had finished reading it and was hoping there was a second one. I was shocked. Even more amazing, when I asked her what the book was about to test her she began telling me ALL about Remi Meatball Muldoon and why the book was so funny. I immediately downloaded Math Detectives also from this author and she began reading again right away. All without being asked or even prodded. I would say this book and this author are a huge win for my family.
