Review This is a comprehensive and extremely useful book about the toileting difficulties associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders. From developing basic toilet training and independence skills to discussing more complex issues like sensory differences, constipation, smearing and avoidant behaviour the book clearly demonstrates the importance of understanding how autism impacts on these difficulties. It offers practical, tried and tested suggestions and includes useful resources and links. This is going to be an invaluable book that has successfully drawn together, for the first time, everything you need to know about this subject. -- Suzie Franklin, Author, Personalisation in Practice, and Family Liaison, Inscape House School A fabulous book packed full of useful information, practical strategies, hints and tips. -- Carol Povey, Director of the Centre for Autism I was delighted to be asked to review this excellent book which gives a common sense and practical approach to toilet training children with ASD. By debunking the myth that toilet training should be delayed until the child 'is ready' it ensures that all children with ASD are given the same opportunities as their peers. I would suggest that this book should be essential reading for all those involved with the care of such children. -- June Rogers MBE, PromoCon Paediatric Continence Specialist This is a 'must-have' book. A comprehensive, informative and easy-to-read guide through the difficulties of toilet training individuals with ASD, this book is helpful for professionals and parents alike. It is thorough and full of practical, tried and tested ideas. The use of parent views makes this an excellent resource. -- Lizi Snushall, Senior Teacher at Uffculme School (ASD specific), Birmingham

By Janis Hill I would like to thank Jessica Kingsley Publishers for an ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review. Also, not too sure if I can classify myself as a ‘professional’, I’m just the parent of a child with continence issues. All the same…This is a remarkable book! I just wish I had it a few years ago when struggling to get my son – diagnosed with HFASD last December – to get into the same toilet training habits aged 3 that his two older sisters seemed to breeze through, in comparison, at younger ages. Still, due to ongoing continence issues he has today, I still found this book very insightful, useful and also uplifting. Why uplifting? It was just such a relief to read that it wasn’t one of those “what am I doing wrong?” moments. Yes life with ‘toilet times’, constant changing of sheets, clothes, rewards charts is still a struggle – but it’s not just me! And here is a fantastic book that has just patted me on the back to comfort me, show that I’m going in the right direction and offering some extremely helpful hints and tips along the way.‘Toilet Training and the Autism Spectrum’ has also helped me work out the differences between situations of both hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity and it really did give me a few light bulb moments as to why some of the tricks I’ve been using don’t work.I’m now also curious to look into Pathological Demand Avoidance as this set off a lot of light bulbs for my son’s attitudes and behaviours too.So, THANK YOU for such an inspiring, helpful and indeed useful book. The only reason I didn’t give it the full 5 stars is my usual complaint about a book not being Australian and so not all the societies, groups and support systems mentioned don’t exist here. Not the book’s fault, another ‘blame the reader’ moment. All the same, I have found this book a ‘great thumbs’ up to what I’ve been doing as well as some gentle nudging in the right direction for future attempts.Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. In fact, I would possibly even recommend it to friends who don’t have ASD children as there was some good insight into toilet troubles our non-ASD kids have – withholding poo! My girls are notorious for this, aren’t on the spectrum, and now I have some great ideas on how to work on this too. I know this book is set for 'professionals' but I seriously feel parents of ASD kids do become professionals in their role as we tend to be the lead Case Manager in charge of getting our glorious child set in the right directions in life.Would I buy this book for myself? I probably would, though would prefer a version modified to suit groups and support means in Australia. But I can also see myself buying it and getting my family and my son’s teachers to have a read as I found it so useful. In summary: Although aimed and probably best suited to help parents of ASD children with their toilet training and related issues, I also feel parents of non-ASD children would get some useful information from this book. Such a great book to help those of us struggling with such situations daily to know we’re not alone and to offer us some really helpful advice.

A HEAVY CROWNThree daughters were born to High King Uorsin, in place of the son he wanted. The youngest, lovely and sweet. The middle, pretty and subtle, with an air of magic. And the eldest, the Heir. A girl grudgingly honed to leadership, not beauty, to bear the sword and honor of the king.Ursula’s loyalty is as ingrained as her straight warrior’s spine. She protects the peace of the Twelve Kingdoms with sweat and blood, her sisters from threats far and near. And she protects her father to prove her worth. But she never imagined her loyalty would become an open question on palace grounds. That her father would receive her with a foreign witch at one side and a hireling captain at the other—that soldiers would look on her as a woman, not as a warrior. She also never expected to decide the destiny of her sisters, of her people, of the Twelve Kingdoms and the Thirteenth. Not with her father still on the throne and war in the air. But the choice is before her. And the Heir must lead…

Hardly, unless you are Ursula, heir to the High Throne of the Twelve Kingdoms, a honed and lethal warrior and tactician. It’s very lonely at the top though. She is separated from her sisters, bound by duty, honor and responsibility for others, battle-hardened and the respected commander of her elite Hawks, but never quite reaching the unattainable ideal of perfection set by her father, King Uorsin who will always find her wanting. Ursula is forced to contend with a handsome, inscrutable mercenary from a foreign kingdom who is hired by King Uorsin as added security. The action is constantly unfolding, dark secrets revealed with challenges and satisfying resolutions, ultimately making this a a powerfully written conclusion to a fabulously executed fantasy saga.I found this book to be an engaging, well-paced adventure, often heart-pounding and emotionally gripping. The characters are simply delightful, especially the irascible Dafne, Ursula’s librarian, confidant, ostensible lady-in-waiting who is no subservient sycophant. Harlan will melt your heart and curl your toes. Enough said. Princesses Andromeda and Amelia play a large part in this story and it was like revisiting old friends, the interactions between the sisters priceless. I like surprises in books and this is full of them, each one neatly wrapped and carefully placed to delight the reader at unexpected places. The strong emotional elements in this book make this a five-star read for me though. Ursula’s transformative journey brought me to tears in parts. The romance was a long, slow build but an oh so satisfying conclusion, one of Kennedy’s best IMHO. Get your fire extinguisher ready!Action, adventure, romance and hot sex . . . .what’s not there to love?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Richly Textured World By Sisimka The Twelve Kindgoms is a richly textured world. There are kings and queens, sword and sorcery, knights and princesses, and most importantly, history. Picked out against this colorful tapestry, we have the tale of Uorsin, the High King, and his three daughters – Andromeda, Amelia and Ursula. ‘The Talon of the Hawk’, the third and final book in ‘The Twelve Kingdoms’ trilogy, is Ursula’s story. It’s also the story of three women coming into their own, and the one woman who risked everything for her kingdom.I’ll try not to spoil the previous two novels in this review by keeping the plot details vague, but though ‘The Talon of the Hawk’ could be enjoyed separately, the full measure of the book can only be gained by starting at the beginning with the ‘The Mark of the Tala’.Ursula returns to Ordnung under a dismal cloud of failure. Though she chose to return – in part to prove her loyalty – her father the High King is not pleased. While girding herself against his displeasure, Ursula’s reflects on the fact this is nothing new. Had she succeeded in any part of her mission, the king might have found fault in her methods. That her father appears to linger on the cusp of madness all but breaks Ursula’s heart. For all he is a bastard, she remembers him as the man who united the Twelve Kingdoms.Confined to the castle as punishment for her failure, Ursula must watch as her father’s behavior dismantles all he built. It’s apparent, however, that the degradation of the Kingdom is not new – so much so, King Uorsin has retained a mercenary army to guard against invasion. Harlan, the captain of the mercenaries, immediately captures Ursula’s attention – mostly because he is unquantified. He appears to have her father’s confidence, but Ursula finds it difficult to trust a man who would sell his loyalty to the highest bidder. Ursula also gains Harlan’s attention, and though she makes it plain his advances are unwelcome, he is persistent. Then there is the other mysterious guest, the woman who seems to have beguiled King Uorsin.Startling events have Ursula fleeing the castle under the protection of Harlan and her Hawks to continue her original mission, only this time, the price of failure will be more than her father’s displeasure. It could mean the High Throne and the fate of the Twelve Kingdoms.‘The Talon of the Hawk’ deepens the story began in ‘The Mark of the Tala’ before we get to the hoped for conclusion. Ursula has been at odds with her sisters throughout the trilogy, and though her actions have always been understandable in a way, here we truly begin to understand her character. Named for her father, Ursula has been raised as heir to the high throne. She lives, and would die, for her king and her country. All her actions and reactions are focused on this goal. She is a warrior, first and foremost. She leads the elite Hawks with confidence. She is not quite as comfortable at court, but will don a dress and play her part because it is her duty – and that is the essential Ursula: her sense of duty. Yet nothing she accomplishes seems to be quite enough to win her father’s approval, because she is not male. When it is revealed exactly how hard Ursula has tried to address Uorsin’s need for a son, your heart will break.Luckily, Harlan is standing by to pick up the pieces, and he does, multiple times, as Ursula begins to fracture beneath the stress of doing what’s best for her kingdom. Their romance is the most rewarding in the series. But what I enjoyed most about this final volume in the trilogy was the collaboration between all three sisters. Their connection has been important throughout, and each has had a role to play in every adventure. Here, more than ever, their love for one another is obvious, as is the fact they must trust one another, even when they disapprove of certain actions and beliefs. Neither can save the High Throne alone. They must work together. The conclusion of the book is extremely moving. There is an inevitability to it, but you can’t help hoping Ursula finds another way. I’d like to say more, but I don’t want to spoil the end of the ride. Regardless, it’s a satisfying end with further revelations that make the journey worthwhile.Written for SFCrowsnest.org.uk

I liked the character of Ursula and the book introduced a love interest in Harlan, a mercenary. I mean it was blatantly obvious that they were going to get together. Their banter in the beginning was silly but fun. I was at least interested in how they eventually would solve their differences and move forward. I also loved that Dafne continues her appearance in the story. I wouldn’t mind a full story of Dafne’s early life frankly. The sorceress added in was a bit boring as a plot device but I was willing to see how it turned out. However I reached the half-way point in my kindle version and had to stop reading. The story dealt with rape and incest and just made my stomach unhappy. I knew I wasn’t going to like this part of the story because of the hints earlier in the book but was surprised at the intensity of displeasure it brought. I mean it irked me so much that I was done.SPOILERS AND RANTING BELOW:I mean, I thought the sorceress bit was very unnecessary as King Uorsin was crazy enough on his own. But seriously, for Ursula to have to have sex/rape as a 12 year old at the hands of her father was just plain horrible. Uorsin was a terrible enough person in physically punching his daughter in the face and treating her like crap that he didn’t need to have rapist thrown in to make him an unpalatable creature that had to be removed from the throne. Ursula was struggling with ideas of loyalty of turning against him when THAT is in her past? I mean really, had she been in that situation, she should have NO guilt about it.I am just plain tired of rape being used as a plot point to show the badness of the bad guy. Why couldn’t Ursula just struggling with feelings of insecurity like she did in the other two books? Why couldn’t she just realize that the lack of stable management of Twelve Kingdoms was enough to have to change and reevaluate her position on her father? Why couldn’t her father just be further going down the spiral of madness and paranoia that he seemed to be doing anyway? Or that he always treats all people with contempt and anger being enough for a change in the ruling status quo?Why do books need to include rape at all as a plot device? I am not saying that rape cannot be used as a plot point. But it is a serious issue. I am NOT saying that the author made light of the situation with the character of Ursula. But it was NOT necessary to the plot. She had already set up the story in a way that the rape and trauma could have been removed and the plot would have not suffered for it at all. It would have potentially made the book one I wanted to finish. One of the authors whose books I enjoy, John Scalzi, had a rather thoughtful piece on this issue called “A Useful Moment from a Mentor” which discusses why he doesn’t include rape scenes in his novels.(...)Scalzi’s blog also comments on another blog post by Robert Jackson Bennett entitled “Why are you writing a rape scene?” and its followup post “Three things which shaped how I think about writing about sexual abuse” which were also very worthy of thoughtful reading.(...)(...)The rape description in this book ruined the novel for me and also the trilogy in a major way. So overall my recommendation is to skip all three and find your romance elsewhere. If you want to read my other reviews visit (...)

With some laugh out loud moments (which I even read aloud to my wife) this story takes you on an exciting sleuth mystery dealing with art, history, trivia and of course... silly putty. From disco fries to DROOG you won't be able to stop reading. Looking forward to their next adventure.

I didn't think Wilton, in all honestly would exceed that book, but in my humble opinion he has. This is such a refreshing, delightful funny read it sort of puts a spring in your step. The dialogue is excellent throughout and some of the quirky characters grow on you until you love them.It reminds me so much of Tom Sharpe and in the style of the old British comedy.s, that to be honest, were the best in the world. It begs to be made into a film or tv series. This really is a brilliant feel good read that you will not be able to put it down. I couldn't and I had so many other things to do. His style of writing I love, he just draws you inI will certainly look out for this author and hopefully be reading a lot more

It is driven along by believable and funny dialogue. A great plot unfolds.Wilton has an original style, fast-paced, quirky and intelligent. In The Soup reminded me of the good old fashioned comedies that used to grace our television screens.

What This Story Needs Is a Pig in a Wig (A Pig in a Wig Book), by Emma J. Virjan

From School Library Journal Toddler-PreS—With its engaging word families and rhyming text, this circular narrative will delight fans of Laura Joffe Numeroff's If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (HarperCollins, 2005) and Mo Willems's "Elephant and Piggy" books (Hyperion). A pig in a wig is on a boat in a moat, where she picks up a frog, a dog, and a goat on a log. More animals are added to the mix, until Pig declares, "Hey!/It's getting crowded/in here,/don't you think?/Off of this boat/before we all sink!" One by one they disembark until she is the only one left on the boat. A spread in muted blue tones enforces the mood as readers view Pig all alone in her tiny boat. She realizes that she would rather have all her friends with her, so as the text states, "What this story needs now is…" a bigger boat appears that will hold everyone. Crisp, vibrant drawings are rendered in charcoal and painted digitally, creating an intensity that will draw children to the story. The composition is creative, with pig-themed elements appearing throughout: pink snouts cover the endpapers, a pig pulls part of a boat onto the title page, and the back cover shows Pig and her friends peeking over the jacket flap as she says, "Hey, Let's Play!" VERDICT This is a charming story to share one-on-one or in a storytime.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

Review “In a story with the echoes of Seuss and Willems, Virjan offers a very funny lesson about the unreliability of narrators.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“A boatload of giggles will keep the reader returning for more easy-to-read fun.” (Kirkus Reviews)

A delightful easy reader By Janet Hamilton Summary: Starting with a pig in a wig on a boat in a moat, the story goes on to need a frog, a dog, and a goat on a log, a rat with a hat on a trunk with a skunk, and so forth. When the boat gets too crowded, the pig in a wig starts unloading her boat, but loneliness compels her to wish for a bigger boat to accommodate everyone. This appears to be the first book in the “A Pig in a Wig” series.Pros: A delightful easy reader, with rhyming words and repetitive text making this a good choice for beginners, as well as a story that both readers and listeners will enjoy. Ages 3-7.Cons: The next book in the series isn’t being published until 2016.

By Marissa Bates So this is a great book...however, not for your two-year-old (see "Junior" description of book that I totally missed). The only pictures in the story are at the very end (the images are very high quality, straight from the movie!) But for a two-year-old that currently only understands that books must have pictures, I wouldn't recommend this purchase.

When James Finn ran down the priestess daughter of a houngan in a Louisiana bayou, he never imagined the consequences. When Laura Finn begins a search for her husband, the nightmare begins. James Finn finds himself trapped in the persona of Clay Cross, a 1950's cold war warrior and misogynist private eye, a composite of every pulp novel he’s ever read. Clay Cross is a swirl of Voodoo, Noir, and mangled metaphors, its comic aspects coming from a 1950’s private eye out of his time

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gritty, snarky, and just a little terrifying By Veronica Sicoe Although this isn't typically up my alley, I gave this story a try and I'm grateful I did. What a strange and fascinating ride!CLAY CROSS is an organic mixture of noir and horror, hardboiled detective story and dark fantasy. It's hard to explain, but it works really well. The author took the classic 1950's cynical detective, a couple of scheming Voodoo gods, and a bitter old comic book writer, wound them up in a 'Bring about the Apocalypse then take over the world' sort of plot, and let them loose on each other. The character Clay Cross' point of view is snarky and fantastically well written, although it was sometimes difficult for me to follow. Some bits of the action were smothered by speculation and I lost the sense of location a few times. But that might just be me. The story kept up a fast enough pace, with plenty of tension and twists to pull me along until the gripping end.

I’m not a “noir” reader, but thanks to these characters, and Michael Keyton’s tight, sassy dialogue and action-packed narrative, I’m a new fan.How can you not love lines like this:“One luscious tomato turned the corner, and my heart stopped. Then she breathed, and the ground began to vibrate, either that or my heart had made a career move and had taken up the pneumatic drill.”Add to the mix a bit of dry humor and dark overtones of voodoo and mystery, and you've got one hell of a story. I recommend this book to noir fans, as well as newbs looking for an introduction into the genre. And I eagerly await the next instalment. There better be a next instalment.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Raymond Chandler would approve, and so do I. By The Morrigan's Pet Mr. Keyton sees more in voodoo than most have ever imagined. Beyond the darkness and profanity, there’s the alternate reality of an anachronism who sees the world through a hard, clear, parallax prism. The result is more than the horrors wrought by black magic. It’s the terrible truth as seen through the crystal of vision unencumbered by effete modernism. He’s hard-boiled, has very little impulse control, carries around a grudge as miasmic as fifty pounds of bad meat, and is more dangerous than a trod upon sidewinder. He’s Clay Cross, private eye. Are you ready to go places you’ve not seen before, and won’t want to see again? It’s a wild ride that does yeoman homage to the noir genre. Read it and see. Highly recommended. The nightmares will pass.

Read Ebook George's Grand Tour, by Caroline Vermalle

A sometimes poignant but optimistic tale, George's Grand Tour is a heartwarming read in the vein of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared that teaches us we're never too old to get out of our comfort zone and have an adventure.

At the age of eighty-three, retired butcher George Nicoleau is about to set off on the greatest adventure of his life. George and his neighbor Charles have long dreamt of a road trip, driving the 3,500 kilometres that make up the stages of the Tour de France. And now that George's over-protective daughter has gone to South America, it's time to seize the moment.

But just when he feels free of family ties, George's granddaughter Adèle starts calling him from London, and he finds himself promising to text her as he travels around France, although he doesn't even know how to use a mobile.

George is plagued by doubts, health worries, and an indifference to modern technology. And yet—might the journey still prove to be everything he had hoped for?

A gentle story with wide, cross-generational appeal, George's Grand Tour has been a European bestseller with sales of two hundred thousand copies.

Caroline Vermalle writes in French and in English. She worked as a producer for the BBC prior to becoming a writer. She is currently somewhere around the globe, traveling with her husband and son.

Hilarious and serious reflection on communication By wordsandpeace VERDICT: Hilarious and serious novel on rediscovering the joys of daily life at any age, and on how modern technology can help rebuild bridges of communication and sharing between generations. Refreshing look at current hot topics.George, 83, a retired butcher and a widower, misses his wife. Plagued by the usual ailments of old age, he is rather lonely. One day, he seizes what seems to be the perfect circumstances to leave with his neighbor Charles on their own Tour de France, by car: following the 2008 Tour de France itinerary, they plan to cover 3,500 km, with 21 stages, stopping at 49 cities and villages, with 2 or 3 days at each stage to allow them to explore around. He plans to hide this 2 months dream trip from his daughter, afraid she will put him instead in a nursing home. But as luck would have it, his grand-daughter Adèle, 23, calls him out of the blue from London where she works as a runner for a film company. Adèle is very disappointed with her unpaid job. But her grandpa’s adventure lifts her up. They start communicating at a deeper and deeper level, mostly through text messages.I fully enjoyed this short book on the themes of communication and connection between generations, and about friendship. At a time when we seem to notice people isolating themselves through an overdose of digital tools, it is refreshing to read about how using modern technology, here text messages, can actually help rebuild bridges between generations. The passages on George learning how to text and use text language (as well as pig Latin) were hilarious. There were really great dialogs relating to modern life. This is also about how using the chance for adventure towards new horizons can help you forget our current medical obsession of fixing everything, and make you free to appreciate again the simple joys of everyday life.I enjoyed the mix of hilarity and emotional passages (remember, this is a French novel, so as always, have your box of Kleenex ready), of fun dialogs and the seriousness of the topics covered. There were also neat descriptions of Brittany landscapes. On a literary level, the opening and the end both contain great twists.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A short treatise on growing old. By little lady blue George at age 83 sets off with his friend and neighbour Charles who is 70-something on their `Grand Tour'. They plan to travel the route of the Tour de France. In a car of course, not on bicycles. While some of the short chapters read more like a travelogue of Brittany, there are some poignant points to be gleaned if one cares to find them. The `Grand Tour' sadly peters out before it is even properly begun, but more than the `tour' these 191 pages are an unadorned story about ageing / relationships / family / friendships / and older folks learning that modern technology has some advantages after all.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Touching Story By William Bentrim This is one of those surprise books. I was surprised I enjoyed it. My first thought was it was a "chick" book. (Sigh) I know not exactly politically correct but nevertheless how I see it. Regardless of description this book was excellent. It describes a relationship between a granddaughter and grandfather.George is in his eighties and is in poor health. He feels smothered by his daughter. He and his best buddy Charles embark on a life changing trip. Meanwhile the story splits to George's granddaughter and her frustration with her internship on a film. This is not an action adventure, don't expect guns, knives or fights. Do expect to be moved by a delightful story.I recommend the book.

The descriptions were right on target, I saw myself in every list. It was scary, yet encouraging, because I did not feel alone, nor did I feel I was too far gone to be helped. This book will be a fixture on my nightstand to get me through the weaker points in my life. Codependency can be a real problem, and i did not want to become one of those victims that waste their life trying to over-help someone else while making it worse for everybody. This book enabled me to objectively view my situation and gave me practical ways to make everything better for my relationship.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I have now set a new dynamic between me and the person I have the codependent relationship with. I am feeling more self secure, By William Sanchez This is a great book. I have learned what codependency is and where it comes from. And to be honest, I never knew that I was codependent, however the book showed me exactly what I was doing which indicates that I am codependent to someone in my life. And thinking back, the relationship between me and that person led me to become insecure, have low self esteem and to feel down most of the time. The book also showed me ways to remove myself from this situation and it worked! I have now set a new dynamic between me and the person I have the codependent relationship with. I am feeling more self secure, more confident and I rarely have negative thoughts or feelings.

Helpful book that addresses codependency well By Ryan C I enjoyed reading this book, and it helped me uncover some things about myself and my relationships that I didn't realize before. So this book provided some good value to me! It basically is an overview on how codependency affects relationships and your personal health in a negative way, and how to break free of it. The book covers how codependent relationships work, how to become aware of it, how to address it, how to stop enabling, and how to fix codependent relationships. Overall it's a helpful book.

Good concept written in screenplay fashion tho needs a bit of a rework since a lady born in 1918 wouldn't be playing with barbies in 1923 since they weren't created until the 1950s. Earns three Santas for originality (stars).

He kicked back in his office chair, propped his feet on the edge of his desk and stared out the window at his view of the Pacific Ocean. Holding the phone to his left ear, he listened to his twin's grumbling with a widening smile on his face."With the twins at the park near the house.""How the mighty have crashed and burned," Connor chortled, shaking his head. Only two years ago, his identical twin, Colton, had been single, driven, a wild man who chased down every extreme adventure their company offered to other risk takers around the world. Then Colton had found out that his ex-wife, Penny, had given birth to twins, a boy and a girl. His world had been thrown into turmoil and he'd been forced to make some real changes and face some hard truths. Though he'd nearly blown the whole thing, Colt had wised up in time to build a new life. Now he had a wife and two kids and was happier than ever before. That didn't mean that Connor wouldn't give him grief at every opportunity, though."Aplaydate" he repeated with a laugh. "Man…""Yeah, yeah," Colt muttered. "Have your laugh and get it over with. Then we can talk about the Ireland plans. You still flying over there to check things out?""That's the idea," Connor said, still chuckling. In the last year, King Extreme Adventures had morphed into King Family Adventures. When Colt had finally realized what was most important in his life, he and Connor had reevaluated their business plan. Extreme adventures were risky and dangerous, and the potential client base very limited. On the other hand, by switching the emphasis of their company to family adventures, they'd opened themselves up to a worldwide audience.Sure, they still ran the extreme adventures for those that wanted it, but since shifting their business focus, the company had grown exponentially."I'll be staying at Ashford Castle and Jefferson's setting me up with a guide to show me around the area.""Amazing," Colt muttered. "We go from offering black diamond ski runs in the Alps to family tours of Ireland.""Things change," Connor reminded him. "You should know that better than anyone.""Not complaining," his twin said, then in a louder voice called out, "Reid, don't throw sand at your sister."Con chuckled. "Riley can take care of herself.""Yeah—there she goes. Sand right back at him." Colt laughed a little. "Penny's at home painting their bedroom.I figured taking the dangerous duo to the park was the easier job. Should've known better."While his brother talked, Connor looked up as their admin, Linda, walked into his office with the mail. She smiled at him, handed the stack of letters over and left the office. Idly, Con picked out a legal-size manila envelope from the rest and threw the others on his desk. Catching the phone between his ear and his shoulder, he ripped open the flap, pulled out the papers and skimmed them. It only took a second for him to say, "What the hell?"Colt paused, then asked, "What's wrong?""You're not going to believe this," Con muttered, straightening in his desk chair, staring at the papers in his hand. The edges of his vision darkened until he was looking at the typeset words as if through a telescope. Despite the legal language designed to make most people feel inadequate to the task of deciphering it, Connor understood enough to know that his world had just taken a major shift."What's going on?"Colt's voice in his ear sounded far away, as though the phone had become a tunnel miles long. Connor's gaze locked on the phrase that had leaped out at him. A heavy band tightened around his chest until drawing a breath seemed a Herculean feat. A ball of ice dropped into the pit of his stomach. He swallowed hard and made himself say the words. "Apparently, I'm a father!"An hour later, Con was standing on the flagstone patio at Colt's cliff-side home in Dana Point. Staring out at the ocean below them, Con hardly noticed the sailboats, the surfers or the waves pounding against the shore with a regular rhythm that sounded like a heartbeat. If he turned his head to the left, he'd be able to see his own house, not a mile farther down the cliff road.Colt's house was modern, with lots of glass and chrome, though Penny had made inroads there, infusing the place with warmth and color over the last couple of years. Con's place was more traditional, though it clung to the face of the cliff as well. But he wasn't thinking about houses, style or the damn sea that relentlessly swept in and out. All he could think was: triplets. He'd outdone his brother by one, though he couldn't really take credit for it, could he? Sure, it had been his sperm, but it wasn't as though he'd been involved any further than that.Hell. He hadn't even known the babies existed until today. Because a woman he'd trusted—a friend—had lied to him. And that was almost harder to believe than the fact that he was suddenly the father of three. He had to get to the bottom of this. Find out everything he could before deciding on a plan of action. But there would be a plan. He was sure of that much, at least. What exactly it would entail was still a mystery.Connor had put the King family lawyers on the case before he left to come to Colt and Penny's house. He was going to be logical. Rational. He wasn't giving in to his instinct to do something. Anything. But it wasn't easy.So far, all he knew was the name of the woman currently suing him for child support. Dina Cortez. Sister of Elena Cortez, wife of Jackie Francis.Jackie.Shaking his head, Con gritted his teeth against a wild rush of anger. Jackie had been Con's best friend all through high school and college. When he got burned in love, Jackie was the one he turned to. She was the one woman in his life he'd always trusted—mainly because she'd never wanted anything from him. In fact, the only time they'd ever argued was second year of college when they'd both fallen for the same girl. A faint smile briefly twisted his mouth as he remembered that rather than discover which of them the woman might go for, they'd both chosen their friendship over the redhead.Three years ago, Con had been Jackie's best man when she married her longtime girlfriend, Elena Cortez. Hell, he'd even taken her to Vegas for a mini bachelorette party before the wedding. He would have bet the King family fortune that Jackie would never lie to him. And yet."So stupid," he muttered, stabbing his fingers through his hair as a cold June wind pushed at him."How were you supposed to know?" Penny King stepped up alongside him and gave his arm a pat.As much as he appreciated the support from his sister-in-law, she simply couldn't understand the level of betrayal he was feeling. He could hardly grasp it. "I should have checked. When Jackie moved to Northern California, I should have kept in touch. Maybe then.""None of this is your fault," Colt said as he walked up beside his wife and stood staring at his twin."My sperm. My babies. My fault." Con shook his head and tightened his grip on the bottle of beer he didn't even want. He knew his family was on his side, but the bottom line here was, he hadn't made a move to keep up with Jackie. He'd merely let her slide out of his life. If he'd done things differently, he wouldn't be in a state of shock today."You know," Colt murmured sagely, "it's easy to see where you made a wrong turn when you look back at the road you're on. Not so easy when you're looking ahead."Frowning, Connor grumbled, "You can spin this any way you want. Fact is, I screwed up."And nothing his family said could change that. Turning his face back into the wind, gaze fixed on the frothing ocean, memories rose up and nearly choked him."Connor, we want to have a baby."He laughed, dropped one arm around Jackie's shoulder and said, "Congratulations! So it's a trip to the sperm bank for you guys! See? I always told you that you 'd need a man eventually."Jackie grinned and shook her head. "Funny guy.""I try. Which one of you's getting pregnant?"She leaned into him and shrugged. "Elena's going to do the heavy lifting. I'm her support system.""You'll be great parents," he assured her and steered her toward the bar in the corner of his living room. Once there, he dug a couple of beers out of the minifridge and opened them. Handing one to Jackie, he tapped the neck of his bottle against hers. Then, frowning a little, he asked, "How does that work, though? What does the kid call you? Are you both Mommy? Mommy One and Mommy Two?""Yeah, I don't know. We 'll figure that out when we get there." Jackie took a sip of her beer and said, "There's a lot to take care of before we get to the kid talking. And part of that is, Elena and I, we wanted to ask you something important.""Okay… " Connor picked up on her sudden nervousness, and it was so unlike Jackie, he was concerned. "What's going on?"Rather than answer right away, she took another sip of beer, chewed at her bottom lip and then blew out a long breath. "See, this is why Elena will carry the baby. I don't think I could give up beer for nine months.""Uh-huh," Connor said with a frown. "Quit stalling. What is it you're trying to say?"They'd spent the day together, catching a movie, going to check out the Porsche Connor was thinking of buying and ending up back at his house for a quick one-on-one game of basketball. She hadn't said a word about any of this. Suddenly, though, she wasn't being herself, and that was starting to worry him."Okay," she repeated, then took a deep breath. Lifting her gaze to his, she said, "The thing is, Elena and I have been talking about this for a long time.""Yeah? Not surprising. You're both all about hearth and home—"She snorted. "Yeah, we 're practically a '50's sitcom. Anyway, you know how you just said we 'd have to head for the sperm bank because, you know, obviously we need a donor, and—" She paused for another sip of beer as if her throat was too dry for her to force the words out. "Okay, I'm just gonna put it out there. We don't want to go with some stranger we picked out of a catalog. We' d like you to be the baby daddy."Surprise slapped at him. For a second or two, he could only stare at his best friend. Jackie's gaze was sure and steady, but there was also a flicker of understanding there, too, as if she knew exactly what he was feeling. Well, hell. He hadn't really thought about who might be the father of the child his friend wanted so badly—he' d assumed that she and Elena would go to a sperm bank and pick out some genius donor. But now that she 'd asked him, Connor realized it made sense. He and Jackie were practically family. Who the hell else would she ask? "Elena wants this, too?""Completely," Jackie assured him, and now that everything was out in the open, she was clearly more relaxed. "Con, there's no pressure on you, okay? Feel free to say no, with no hard feelings between us, I swear. Just…don't say no right away. Think about it, all right? "Connor reached out, grabbed her and pulled her in for a tight hug. She sighed, wrapped her arms around his middle and held on. "I know this is big, Con. Seriously big. And I know it's kind of weird, me asking you for your baby stuff! But—" she tipped her head back and looked at him "—we really want this and we want that…connection to the baby's father, you know? You mean a lot to us. Not just me."He gave her a squeeze. "Yeah, I know. I love you, too.""God, we 're mushy all of a sudden.""Babies'll do that to you, I hear," Con said. Her eyes went misty. "A baby. Hard to imagine me a mom.""No, it's not," he assured her. And seeing that dreamy, wistful look on her face would have decided him even if he hadn't already made the choice. They'd been friends so long, how could he not help her when she needed it? "I'd have a condition, Jack."She sucked in a breath and held it. "What?""I can't just father a kid and walk away. I' ll have to be a part of my child's life."Part-time father, he told himself. All of the fun and little of the hassles."Absolutely, Con. Agreed.""All right then." Connor swung her in a circle and Jackie shrieked with laughter. When he set her on her feet again, he gave her a fast, hard kiss and said, "Let's make a baby."They'd tried. But Jackie told him the insemination hadn't taken. When he'd offered to help them try again, she'd turned him down. Said that she and Elena were moving to Northern California to get a fresh start. Then she'd sort of disappeared from his life. No phone calls. No nothing. He'd allowed it to happen, too, so he couldn't throw all the blame on Jackie for that. "I should have checked," he said again, hating that he hadn't."Yeah, well—" Colt leaned back against the low stone wall separating the patio from a wide swath of manicured lawn "—who would have expected Jackie to lie to you?"That was the hardest part to swallow, Connor admitted silently. He'd always trusted her. Had never doubted what she told him. And all this time, she'd hidden his children from him.Con shook his head and squinted into the wind. His heartbeat raced and the ice in his stomach was colder, deeper somehow than it had been only an hour before. And after all the lies, he couldn't even yell at her. Because she and Elena were dead. He hadn't been able to cut through most of the legalese in the damn letter from the lawyer, but that much he'd caught. Dina Cortez, the babies' guardian, named by the late Jackie and Elena Francis, was the one suing him.How the hell could he mourn his friend when he was so furious with her all he wanted to do was rage at her for what she'd done?"So who's Dina Cortez?" Colt folded his arms over his chest."Elena's sister," Connor told him. "I met her at the wedding. She was Elena's maid of honor and the only one of her family who showed up." He frowned. He still couldn't understand how family didn't support family, no matter what. "Don't remember much about her, really.""Doesn't matter, I guess," Colt mused. "You'll be getting to know her pretty damn well soon enough.""True." And he'd have plenty to say once he met up with Dina Cortez again.

He had been sperm donor for a friend, but was told that the insemination didn't take. His friend moved away and didn't tell him about the babies. The first he knew about it was after the couple had died, and the babies' aunt and guardian asked for financial help.Connor is furious that he'd been lied to, and feels betrayed by one of the few people he trusted. As part of the King family, he has experience with people, especially women, wanting to use him or his money to get what they want. He's certain that Dina has an agenda of her own, and he'll do whatever is necessary to claim his babies.Dina is a successful caterer whose life was turned upside down by her sister's death and becoming guardian of her niece and nephews. She had always been under the impression that their father wasn't interested in them, so Connor's appearance surprised her, as did his determination to take custody of the kids. There are sparks between Dina and Connor from the moment they met. Dina fights them hard because she can see herself falling for him. She doesn't trust men, especially rich ones, because she so often saw her mother constantly changing who she was to meet their expectations. She is afraid that she would do the same thing. Of course, the sparks burst into flame pretty quickly and she and Connor grow closer. As she feared, she falls in love with him, but knows that her love isn't returned.I loved seeing Connor fall for the babies so quickly. Thanks to the multitude of children in the King family, he's not entirely inexperienced and I enjoyed seeing how he surprised Dina with his ability to take care of the kids. Because of who he is, Connor is used to getting what he wants, and he wants the kids. He pushes Dina into moving into his house with the children. Connor also wants Dina. Having her and the kids living with him has given him something he didn't know he was missing, and he wants to make it permanent. Once he has what he wants, he realizes that what he feels is love, but he can't overcome his fear of trusting her. When those fears cause him to act like a complete fool, he nearly loses everything. I loved the conversation with his brother Colt (Double the Trouble) as Colt reminds him of what he went through. Dina also has to let go of her fears and learn to trust as well. The ending was pretty sweet.

Book Reviews 2 out of 5 stars, three months ago Dina’s life completely changed when her sister and sister-in-law died in an unexpected accident leaving her the guardian of her precocious toddler nephews and niece. However, because of her not being able to afford to raise them on the salary she has she decides to get child support from the “sperm donor” (Connor) of the children, which ends up throwing another wrench in her plans when she finds that Connor wants to be a part of their lives no matter the cost. How much is she willing to give up or change about her life for the only family she has left? From the very beginning, I was having a hard time getting over Jamie & Elena's lie about the kids, especially since Connor made it a stipulation about visitation rights for himself and they completely disregarded his wishes. Because of all of that, it made it hard to enjoy this novel, as I'd have like too. So much so, that by about 40% on I just skimmed through the rest of the novel, as I was curious as to how everything would end up between them and I wasn’t enamored with what was happening in the plot. I found that while I sympathized with Connor I didn’t like how he seemed to steamroll over everything to get his way and Dina is way too stubborn for her own good. Together while they might have worked as partners in bed and as parents to the kids, I never thought they had a “wonderful” romance between them more like it was forced on them through circumstance.I can say that while I am not a fan of this novel, I thought it had potential and recommend it to those who are a fan of Ms. Child.Review By: From Me to You ... I’ve read about 35 of her books and I’ve enjoyed every one of them. Just like I love Connor and Dina, Sage, Sam and Sadie, too. As well as Angelica/Abuela’s advice. Love seeing Colton and Penny, Jefferson and Maura again. It’s so obvious how Connor and Dina feel about each other, obvious to everyone except them. I like that in a book but I don’t like soooo much angst that it makes me crazy, which you find in 300 and 400 page books because authors need some way to fill up the pages. This was a really good book. Maureen Child writes great love stories, with some great sex and I never get tired of her. AND she has plenty more books for me to read.
