Jimmy Clifford is a thirty-year-old movie addict and film memorabilia shop owner. He is also very fed up. He is fed up with his best friend Oswald's stupid, made-up card games, his drug dealer Pluto's novelty drugs are losing their novelty and his anti-depressants don't appear to be working anymore. But when he discovers that the Crypt - a local, independent cinema that he regards as his 'spiritual home' - is to be demolished, he feels compelled to act. Getting together with his friends and a fellow shop owner they decide upon an idea - there will be a 'Save the Crypt' cabaret night (featuring local performers) to highlight the situation and raise money in the process. All Jimmy has to do for his part is get out and find seven acts in two months - not so easy when you're an agoraphobic and you're up against giant egos and a psychotic property developer."Jimmy and his friends remind me of The Big Bang Theory's characters, only working class, slightly less nerdy, and without supersized IQ's ... Movie lovers and really anyone who likes books with offbeat characters would find this an enjoyable read."OnlineBookClub.org"This is a film freak's novel through and through, and the veneration of film shines on every page ... a heartwarming and inspiring read."Self-Publishing Review"Holly Curtis creates a successful story, not only with the plot line, but in writing style as well. The characters of Celluloid all are able to stand alone, each with his or her own distinct voice and characteristics."Red City Review"This is a book with a simple concept, but a lot of heart. And chuckles."The Bookshelf Gargoyle

Wildly entertaining story with hilarious dialogue By Kitty Smith I found this to be a witty story that had me giggling out loud more than a few times. Jimmy is a sympathetic character, an agoraphobe who has retreated to the world of cinema but must now come out of hiding to save that which he loves. After learning that the Crypt is to be sold, demolished, and turned into 34 flats, Jimmy's world collapses. Suddenly he has a purpose, and as the story unfolds you're taken on a wildly entertaining ride as Jimmy enlists the help of a shady film buff named Mr. Granger to save the Crypt. The dialogue here is priceless, whether it's Jimmy and Oswald arguing over a game or Jimmy and Bannister arguing over the best part of "North by Northwest". It's rare I come across a book where the characters' banter is this clever without feeling scripted or forced, but "Celluloid" shines like a beacon when it comes to character interactions. The story is great, a David vs Goliath feel but contemporary and with much hilarity. A great read, one worth revisiting again.

In "Celluloid" by Holly Curtis, Jimmy Clifford is a film enthusiast with a strong moral compass. When you pair a tale of justice with the medium of movies, you can not help but get a strong story of emotion, investment, and nostalgia.Author Holly Curtis handles this tale of one man's personal mission to save his local indie cinema from a condo takeover with ease and precision. Jimmy Clifford is like an older kid, something most common among the coveted 18-49 demographic. He owns a shop chock full of film memorabilia, and is supported by characters such as his best friend and a drug dealer who specializes in the hot drug du-jour.Jimmy is personally affected by the news of a condo to be built in place of his revered "Crypt" - said movie theatre. He takes it upon himself to stage a cabaret night to raise awareness of the situation, and to raise money to stop the takeover. What ensues is a hilarious story of pop culture, a certain coming of age, and a quest to find entertainment to make the cabaret a bonafide hit. It's a rather unique and interesting tale of the little things that can trigger the resolution in a person long thought dormant, and a pleasure to read.Like this review? His addictions is movies; old, new, actually all movies. his every day life is shattered when he discovers that The Crypt, a small Cinema will be closing down. This just will not do. This is his favorite hang-out. So he decides to take action.Jimmy with the help of his friends decide to do a benefit to save the Crypt, they plan on hosting a "Cabaret Night" featuring local talents. All Jimmy has to do is find seven acts, but he only has two months to pull it off.A very original story with quirky and likable characters. Jimmy is flawed, he is agoraphobic, on psychiatric medications and occasional street drugs. Despite his personal (mental health) issues he is still funny and likable. All of his friends have their own "quirks" but they too are likable. It is a challenge for Jinny to step out of his "comfort zone", but he will do what ever it takes to try to save the Crypt. Overall I found Celluloid quite entertaining, with many laugh out loud moments. I recommend to those who love a good comedy.* I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
