Review Will Miss Hazeltine be able to help the most shy and fearful kitty of them all? -- Parent Talk Parent Talk This delightful book tells a tale of fears overcome but the real pleasure is in the detail as Potter's words and Brigitta Sif's illustrations combine to ensure every re-reading has the potential for new discoveries. -- Absolutely Dulwich Absolutely Dulwich A quirky charm exudes from every spread: the sight of Miss H as yoga teacher is priceless and the forest scenes (with and without cats) have a real magical feel about them. -- Red Reading Hub Red Reading Hub The illustrations are a tremendous treat. The gothic theme includes all the details in Miss Hazeltine's cosy cottage and the woods around it, her pointed hat, her too-large feet, and the huge eyes of all the cats. -- Books for Keeps Books for Keeps A heart-warming book [...] I felt the message was strong -- Juno Juno It is a really funny book and I give it 10 stars. -- Flo (age 6) Anorak ...amusing and beautifully illustrated. -- Your Cat Magazine Your Cat Magazine The strength of this book lies in Sif's absorbing illustrations. Miss Hazeltine is brought to life as a warm, spirited and nimble character, a contrast to the withdrawn, crouching nature of the many scaredy cats in her care [...] This is a worthy story about patience, courage and wholehearted acceptance of the unique character of each individual. Inis Reading Guide This is a magically illustrated picture book with detailed drawings affording plenty of opportunities to talk and share with young readers [...] The language is simple and understated and as a result the message remains clear - that kindness and friendship can triumph! A guide for overcoming fears By Janet Hamilton Summary: As the title suggest, Miss Hazeltine has opened a home for shy and fearful cats, and it’s very popular with pet owners. Their cats have all kinds of issues from a fear of mice to an inability to pounce, but the one that is scared of everything is Crumb. He refuses to participate in Bird Basics, Scary Noises, Meeting New Friends, or any of the other trainings Miss Hazeltine offers. That’s okay with her. She lets him just sit and watch, and he proves to be a good observer. One afternoon, when the other cats are sleeping, she goes out for more milk and doesn’t come back. It’s Crumb who knows just what to do and leads the other cats on a rescue mission. He alone knows what scares Miss Hazeltine and how to help her overcome her fears and find her way back home. Upon their return, the cats change the sign on the house to Miss Hazeltine’s Home for Shy and Pretty Brave If You Ask Us Cats.Pros: Miss Hazeltine’s approach, to allow her cats to proceed at their own pace in overcoming their fears, seems like a very comforting one to cats or children. Kids will enjoy the cartoonish illustrations and relate to the cats’ difficulties.Cons: The cats are a little too bug-eyed to be cute in the classic cat sense.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Pitch Perfect Poignant Read By Customer As a fan of Alicia Potter's work, I was anxious to read her latest picture book offering: Miss Hazeltine's Home for Shy and Fearful Cats. The pacing is perfect, and with humor and heart, the reader follows Crumbs and the other cats as Miss Hazeltine offers gentle encouragement. When Miss Hazeltine goes missing (falling on her way back with buckets of milk for her growing brood) the touching low point--of no lesson having been given on what to do when your human goes missing--is poignant. The end, both visually and textually, is pitch perfect. A wonderful read for scaredy cats and for those who already consider themselves brave.
