When a Man Marries by Mary Roberts Rinehart, first published in 1910. When a Man Marries is an easy, fun mystery about a group of socialites who find themselves quarantined in a mansion after a dinner party. Jewelry goes missing, there are secret trysts and mistaken identities...it's wonderful! A young artist, recently divorced by his wife, finds that his aunt is soon to visit. The aunt, who contributes to the family income and who has never seen the wife, knows nothing of the domestic upheaval. How the young man meets the situation is humorously and most entertainingly told. Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie, although her first mystery novel was published 14 years before Christie's. She is considered the source of the phrase "The butler did it", although she did not actually use the phrase. She is considered to have invented the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery writing.

It's a shame she's been sort of forgotten nowadays when she was a best selling author way back at the beginning of the 20th century. The story is a comedy of errors among the privileged class. Society gal Kit McNair tries to do her friend Jim a favor by posing as his wife so his aunt (who holds the purse strings) won't know he's divorced. A small dinner party at Jim's house quickly falls apart when the servants run for the hills after the butler is initially diagnosed with smallpox and the entire house is quarantined. Things are made even more difficult when Jim's actual ex-wife invades the scene and is forced to be cooped up with the now helpless group. (The men don't even know how to shave themselves!)As they attempt to survive the week, and each other, to see if anyone will come down with the disease, there's a minor mystery of some missing jewelry. But we're not here for that, we're in it for the romance. For Jim, who's still in love with his ex, is trying to woo her back, making it look like he's cheating on Kit when he's really not since they're not married. Meanwhile, Kit is developing a soft spot for Tom, one of the other guests, but he thinks she's married to Jim and Tom is livid at Jim's blatant infidelity.Add to the melee demanding Aunt Selina, who doesn't like Kit but expects her to fight for her man (which really _isn't_ her man), a group with cabin fever determined to break OUT of the house, a swarm of reporters and cops determined to keep them IN the house, and the struggle to figure out how to make an omelette and you have a pretty funny book with loveable characters and a quick pace.

A delightful comedy about a bunch of silly rich people who get stuck quarantined in a house with no servants for a week. Complications include a jewel thief, a rich aunt, the main character pretending to be married to the nephew and a jealous ex-wife. A quick read and lots of fun.

The Insanity of God is the personal and lifelong journey of an ordinary couple from rural Kentucky who thought they were going on just your ordinary missionary pilgrimage but discovered it would be anything but. After spending over six hard years doing relief work in Somalia and experiencing life where it looked like God had turned away completely and he was clueless about the tragedies of life, the couple had a crisis of faith and left Africa asking God, "Does the Gospel work anywhere when it is really a hard place?" It sure didn't work in Somalia.

Nik recalls, "God had always been so real to me, to Ruth, and to our boys. But was he enough for the utter weariness of soul I experienced at that time, in that place, under those circumstances?" It is a question that many have asked and one that, if answered, can lead us to a whole new world of faith. How does faith survive, let alone flourish, in a place like the Middle East? How can Ggod truly overcome such evil? How do you maintain hope when all is darkness around you? How can we say "greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world" when it may not be visibly true in that place at that time? How does anyone live an abundant, victorious Christian life in our world's toughest places? Can Christianity even work outside of Western, dressed-up, ordered nations? If so, how?

The Insanity of God tells a story - a remarkable and unique story to be sure, yet at heart a very human story - of the Ripkens' own spiritual and emotional odyssey. The gripping narrative account of a personal pilgrimage into some of the toughest places on Earth, combined with sobering and insightful stories of the remarkable people of faith Nik and Ruth encountered on their journeys, will serve as a powerful course of revelation, growth, and challenge for anyone who wants to know whether God truly is enough.

105 of 110 people found the following review helpful. Intense! By Nikole The Insanity of God by Nik Ripken (with Gregg Lewis) is a soul-searching book that surpasses some missionary books and blogs I have read by its raw delivery.Nik Ripken is a pseudonym. Some of the names in his stories have been made-up to protect those Christians in persecuted countries from discovery by their governments. It's a book that takes us around the world as Nik interviews believers from countries hostile to Christianity. Intermixed in the book is his testimony.Nik grew up a non-believer. He didn't have the traditional church background like his wife, Ruth. He became a believer, dated Ruth, and their marriage began with a commitment to follow Jesus. Nik almost made me cry on page 54 when at Nik and Ruth's wedding, Nik's mom intended to divorce Nik's father. Coming from a committed Christian family, Ruth felt shock.Ruth and Nik's mutual commitment to follow Jesus at all costs took them to the Horn of Africa. The early part of the book speaks about their beginnings and their work in learning a variety of African languages. Nik's focus though became the country of Somalia, and in the early nineties it was war torn. Ruth and Nik were a team and after moving around the Horn of Africa learning to be missionaries, they settled in Nairobi and formed a relief organization of their own.Nik made many trips into Somalia, staying sometimes for days to map out the needs, making local contacts, and researching how their new relief organization could help, but Somali caught Nik unaware. The starvation, the deaths, and the inward fighting left Nik feeling helpless. His Americanized faith did not prepare him for spreading the Gospel in a country that had maybe one or two believers in it. Persecution was common. When Nik's organization air dropped aid supplies to Somalia, villages would flock to it. The next day Muslims would arrive in the village, beat the men and rape the women for simply taking western aid. The Muslims warned the village that if aid was accepted again worse would happen. Nik found this frustrating how evil seemed to have the upper hand. In several areas Nik spoke about what was happening in Somalia as evil. Never have I read a missionary's story that read so intense. The last one I read felt glossed over in what they experienced as if the area was not that dangerous. Nik effectively communicates and describes his experiences in Somalia, Nairobi, China, former Eastern Block countries, and Russia without padding anything. It doesn't feel like he is holding anything back.Nik was in Somalia at the time when the events of "Black Hawk Down" occurred. Nik worked in Somalia for a month at a time, spending the in-between times in Nairobi with his family. Nik struggled to cope with the starvation he witnessed and the frustration of only serving the Somalians physical needs. Many events challenged Nik.A woman in a village tried to force her child on him. He wrote, "I was overwhelmed with the desperation of those mothers. I wondered what I would have done if it was my family that was starving. Would I consider giving away my son if that was the only possible way that he would live? The questions haunted me." (pg. 58).Then, Nik's son, Tim, dies from an asthma caused cardiac arrest. Tim was a teenager. This event triggered Nik's questions. He and Ruth had always wondered just how far they would go for Jesus. Wasn't faith supposed to be easier?Tim's death was the catalyst in Nik's worldwide search for answers. At first, the purpose was to find out how Christians in countries hostile to Christianity survived for purposes of learning how to reach Nik's beloved Somali's. In all actuality, the wound caused by the death of Tim made Nik reach out to believers in other countries. He went to Russia and the Ukraine to interview people who once lived under the Iron Curtain. God showed up supernaturally in every country in ways that could make even the most disbelieving human being question his own atheism. This happened in China and the other countries he visited, too. What struck me was when God spoke to him in an underground church in China. The hard truth Nik spoke would have in this country brought on accusations of being judgemental to these underground churches. Nik wanted to help them financially, but God silenced him literally. Out of the millions of believers, a few hundred were struggling, starving families. God instead asked Nik to relay this message:"If ten million believers in your movement cannot take care of four hundred families, do you have the right to call yourselves the Body of Christ, the Church, or even followers of Jesus?"The shock the underground church displayed melted into conviction. They swore to take care of the four hundred hurting families. The underlying theme in the book got through to me.Most believing Christians in hostile countries embrace persecution as normal, "like the sun rising in the east." Hearing stories of God moving worldwide like in Old and New Testament times reminded me how Americans are soft when it comes to their faith and how we take the Bible for granted. In China, a leader of an underground church is not trusted until they've been to prison at least once. Tales of Muslims encouraged through visions and dreams to seek Jesus and finding Bibles, even in an Islamic book store, was amazing. The Insanity of God woke up my faith.Even though there were times when the change of font was distracting and I felt that the end of the book lacked the punch it had throughout, going on too long towards the end, I gave this book five stars. I've never heard a missionary speak like this in person or in any book or blog I've read. It's always been about support raising or I felt missionaries were holding back in some way, but The Insanity of God made me realize how much I take God for granted. Even though I've witnessed some supernatural answer to prayer, living in America can make you complacent. And why not? Some of our churches are as large as college campuses. We don't worry about being shot, bombed, or imprisoned here. In fact, we try to do things ourselves without inviting God into it or letting Him show us He can handle our situations. This book made me re-think my faith.* Book given by publisher to review.

I am for ever changed. There is no going back once you read this account of God s people. Jesus is really alive in our present world. Reader, beware your heart will be rent for Jesus.

Perhaps "appreciated" is the appropriate word, though to my ears it sounds too weak. Almost "haunted," but not in a creepy way. More in a Holy Spirit pursued-kind-of-way. Certainly the many accounts of faithfulness under the most extreme pressure inspired me and moved me emotionally. But what I appreciate most about this book is the way it serves as a corrective to our American, western-tilted understanding of what a life of following Jesus means and requires. Here is not just a call to faith, but to faith shining forth as faithfulness ... at any cost. If you are like me you'll read it and then talk about it. A lot. But you'll think about it even more, your heart simply unable to get free of a number of the timeless, crystallized statements of truth. Burrs lodged in the heart--heaven-sent irritants that strangely work in a healing sort of way.

This cute story is about a tortoise that decides one day that he is tired of being slow. He takes off his shell, and starts off. Soon he discovers that he misses his shell for all the things it provided him: shelter, shade, and safety. He realizes too that he will never be fast, and when he finally finds his shell again, he gladly climbs back inside. This story is told wonderfully, and in rhyme as well. The words flow well, and are fun to read out loud. The illustrations are Eric Carle's customary well-done collages. The cute story well told and with such fun illustrations makes for a great book.Loggie-log-log-log

A lovely story, fun to read, great illustrations By Sunshine I was so happy to find this book, as I love Eric Carle's illustrations but don't care for his writing in most cases. Thank goodness for Richard Buckley and his entertaining story about the foolish tortoise. The rhyming text is great for the ears, and the images are beautiful.Another thing I like about this book is that it is meatier than most board books-- i.e., more pages and more text on each 2-page spread. Therefore, it will be a story that I read to my son for a few years to come.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This was very enjoyable By Billy Gilman The Foolish Tortoise was a very good book, I love Eric Carle's work. The pictures were marvelous. I won't give away the ending but he leaves his shell to travel to places he could never go before, but he's still not as fast as a horse, so he gets kind of depressed. He also finds trouble and he can't hide in his shell, so he find shelter behind rocks and tree, etc. He gets cold and has no heat. He walks around looking for his shell, does he find it? Get the book to find out.

Besides American and Christian names the book lists many ethnic names: African, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Irish, Italian, etc.I can't comment on the quality and accuracy of all the names, but being East Indian I do have a fair bit of knowledge regarding Indian names. The problems with this book:1. Many of the name meanings are wildly inaccurate.2. Some boys names were incorrectly classified as a girls name and vice-versa.3. Some Arabic names were incorrectly classified as Indian.4. Quality: many Indian names listed in this book are archaic and woefully outdated-- the sort of name that conjures up images of someone in their 80s. The American equivalent would be names like Ebenezer or Nimrod. Those names were popular at some point in the 1880s, but how many parents would give that name to their child today =)The bottom line: there are a wide variety of names to be found here, but if you're going to go with a name you are unfamiliar with be sure to check alternate sources for meanings, source attribution and gender-appropriateness.

They are mostly one word meanings, if there is a meaning at all. Mostly it seems like it wants to take you in a big circle of reference from one name to the next never quite giving you what you are looking for. It wasn't helpful for me. I found "The Babyname Wizard" book A LOT more informative and helpful.

The author collected all names from around the world but did not bother to check their meaning, origin, etc. Many names are associated with ridiculous non-facts or false facts. Many others do not have their origin as stated. We know that for sure about polish names - we come from Poland; but we noticed the same thing with many other names as well. Very weak book. Do not buy it!

A Block Story for Kids

The Journey of Steve The Builder: Book 1

Steve is a creative worker that toiled in one of the many villages in the Overworld. He, just like any other fellow who hunted, researched new areas to help the village expand. But the best thing about Steve was his passion for building. He is an Overworld builder. And he would do nothing all afternoon but create things, while other men preferred hitting each other with shovels. In the middle of one of his creations, Steve meets a strange dog holding a mysterious piece of redstone. Steve tracks the dog down and learns more about this strange material and how to use it. But in the process, he meets a group of strange people who will later on lead him to one of the biggest challenges of his life. Steve will have to take everything he knows about building and learn a few more things to take his craft to the next level. Based on the popular Minecraft videogame, Steve’s adventures will prove to be a test of creativity, patience and bravery. He shall see what it truly means to be an epic builder.

A Handful of Stars, by Cynthia Lord

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Two girls from seemingly different backgrounds bond over a blind dog and blueberries in Lord's latest heartwarmer. Lily lives in Maine, raised by her maternal grandparents, Mémère and Pépère. Her black lab, Lucky, is her strongest connection to her deceased mother. Lucky is slowly going blind and Lily is determined to raise money for an expensive and risky eye surgery to cure him; she paints wooden mason bee houses and sells them in her grandparent's general store. Salma is in Maine for the summer with her family, migrant workers who live and work in the blueberry barrens. Lucky unexpectedly brings the girls together and they immediately bond over their love of dogs, art, and blueberry enchiladas. Salma is creative and artistic, something that Lily both admires and envies. When Salma decides to enter the Blueberry Queen pageant—something no migrant girl has ever done before—Lily's eyes are opened to the microaggressions of some of the townsfolk. There's also the surprising support from Hannah, Lily's former best friend and reigning Blueberry Queen, who offers to loan Salma a gown. Through her friendship with Salma, the protagonist finds a confidence she didn't know she had and she begins to recognize and question her own previously unexamined biases. Despite the slim page count, this middle grade novel's plot evolves organically. Lord's characters reveal themselves slowly within the narrative and the Maine setting is richly described. The bright cover featuring an adorable black lab is pure shelfbait; though readers looking for a animal tale will instead find a story that centers more on family, friendship, and growing pains. VERDICT A thoughtful work that examines cultural bias and will spark discussion.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

Review Praise for A Handful of Stars : * "Salma's artistic creativity and gumption awaken Lily to the power of imagination, the importance of embracing change and knowing when to let go of the past, and the rewards of venturing beyond one's comfort zone." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review * "The treatment of Salma's migrant life is matter-of-fact but direct, and Lily plausibly deals with possibilities of local racism and swells with indignation on behalf of her new friend... Complex Characters and a Satisfyingly Bittersweet Ending in A HANDFUL OF STARS By KidsReads In A HANDFUL OF STARS by Cynthia Lord, 12-year-old Lily (short for Tigerlily) is having kind of a lonely summer. Her best friend Hannah is so obsessed with a boy that she doesn't have any time for the kinds of activities the two of them once enjoyed. Lily's grandma and grandpa are busy running the general store in their small Maine seacoast town, and of course, Lily's never known her father and her mom's been gone since Lily was two. That's why Lily spends so much time with her dog Lucky; he's old and has gone blind, but he's Lily's last remaining connection to her mother, since she bought him when he was just a puppy. Lucky's an older dog now, but Lily's convinced that if she can just make enough money painting bee houses this summer, she can pay for an operation that might return his sight. One summer day, Lucky gets away from Lily and runs right into the fields where migrant workers are harvesting wild blueberries. A girl Lily’s age named Salma helps rein Lucky in, and it turns out that Salma likes painting, too, but her paintings are real works of art, not just stencils like Lily paints. Salma agrees to help Lily raise money for Lucky's operation, and Lily agrees to help Salma compete for the title of Blueberry Queen. Even if each girl thinks the other's dream is a long shot, they support each other --- and that's what friendship is for, right?Lord, whose previous books have dealt with dementia and autism, could be easy to pigeonhole as an author of so-called issues-driven books. It's true that her novels include medical or social issues, in this case the difficulty of establishing relationships and achieving success as the child of a migrant worker family, but the beauty of Lord's writing and the genuine emotion conveyed in her story line elevates the novel beyond merely addressing those issues. In addition to being a captivating and realistic story of friendships old and new, A HANDFUL OF STARS will appeal to readers who love stories about dogs, since the relationship between Lily and Lucky is so affectionate and special. It's also a well-drawn portrait of a place that Lord knows well and is fond of (like Lily, she lives in Maine), and it's a portrait of a family continuing to recover from a grief that is now nearly a decade old. The novel includes a satisfying story arc, as Salma and Lily's friendship grows over the summer and culminates at the annual blueberry festival and pageant. And Lord recognizes and validates the complexity of her characters' situations, refusing to offer an artificially and unrealistically happy ending in favor of one that is both satisfying and bittersweet.Reviewed by Norah Piehl

Powerful Message and Beautiful Story By Young Mensan BookParade A Handful of Stars is a realistic fiction story about two girls from completely different backgrounds who become the unlikeliest of friends. Lily grew up in the small town in Maine, known only as a producer of wild blueberries, living above her grandparent’s store. Salma was a migrant worker, who could never truly call one place home. Even though both lived extremely close, their worlds seemed miles away. They met when Lily’s blind dog Lucky ran into the blueberry fields where Salma was working. Lily and Salma find out they have a lot in common, and soon become “star friends”. But they both have different things they want to achieve. Lily wants to save up enough money for an operation on Lucky’s eyes to help him see again, and Salma wants to win the Blueberry pageant, a prestigious beauty contest. With each other’s help, will they get what they want? Read the book to find out! I loved how this book managed to rope so much information about Maine into a beautiful story. The facts enhanced the story so much, and made it a truly delightful reading experience. I specifically liked how the pageant brought in questions about wild blueberries. I learned the most from that section. I think the readers who would enjoy the book the most are people in the 8-12 range, especially girls. They would relate to Lily, Salma and their friendship the most. It is important to feel the power of their friendship because that’s what makes this story magical. If you cannot relate, the magic is lost.I rated this book five stars because of how beautifully fact and fiction were woven together. I also rated it so high because of the powerful message it contained. A true friend will not care where you come from and how different you are. They will still value you. A true friend will support your dreams, whatever they may be.Reviewed by Anya A, age 10, Washington Metropolitan Mensa

One of my favorite things about this book, is that the childrens' dialog sound real. In many books written by adults the children in the story have amazing vocabulary and intelligence. As I read this book, I kept thinking that sounds just like one of my students.I also can't wait to have an uncomfortable conversation with my students about immigration and racism. Because I find 10 year olds have a different and interesting prospective compared to my peers.

Con una admirable precisión y una singular fuerza evocativa, Gary Jennings ha reconstruido el mundo de los aztecas en los años en que, ante el embate de los conquistadores españoles, sufre una sacudida de la que ya no podrá recuperarse. Description in English: Aztec is the extraordinary story of the last and greatest native civilization of North America. Told in the words of one of the most robust and memorable characters in modern fiction, Mixtli-Dark Cloud, Aztec reveals the very depths of Aztec civilization from the peak and feather-banner splendor of the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan to the arrival of Hernan Cortes and his conquistadores, and their destruction of the Aztec empire. The story of Mixtli is the story of the Aztecs themselves -a compelling, epic tale of heroic dignity and a colossal civilization's rise and fall. Jennings himself spent twelve years in Mexico documenting his historical. Novels.

I didn't want it to end. I have never read a book more than once. I started it again a couple of days back and this time I'm taking my time and I will savor every page.

A captivating historical novel about the conquest of New Spain, written from a native's point of view. Gives a person pride about his or her Mexican heritage. Lots of adventure, sex, violence, fantastic descriptions, engaging characters. My Mexican husband read it in Spanish and I (Irish-American) read it in English 18 years ago and we were both absolutely mesmerized and captivated by this book. 14 years later our teenage son read it and also said it was one of the best books he had ever read, and recently our 18 year old daughter read it and had the same reaction. I ordered two hardcopies so that each of my kids will have one to keep and hand down. The only other book that I have done this with is Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, which gave me the same feeling about my Irish Catholic roots.

If only Maddy sees the mermaid, can it be real? It's Maddy's turn to have a bayou summer. At first she misses life back home in the city, but soon she grows to love everything about her new surroundings -- the glimmering fireflies, the glorious landscape, and something else, deep within the water, that only Maddy sees. Could it be a mermaid? As her grandmother shares wisdom about sayings and signs, Maddy realizes she may be only the sibling to carry on her family's magical legacy. And when a disastrous oil leak threatens the bayou, she knows she may also be the only one who can help. Does she have what it takes to be a hero?A coming-of-age tale rich with folk magic, set in the wake of the Gulf oil spill, Bayou Magic celebrates hope, friendship, and family, and captures the wonder of life in the Deep South.

Bayou Magic, by Jewell Parker Rhodes

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Maddy lives with her family in New Orleans. At almost 10, she is the youngest of five girls, and this summer it will be her turn to stay with her grandmother in the bayou. Apprehensive about the visit—her sisters say Grandmère is a witch, whose house has no electricity or indoor plumbing—Maddy is also excited to discover Bon Temps. Soon, Grandmère teaches Maddy about healing herbs and their family history. When Maddy finds that she can call fireflies and see mermaids, Grandmère tells her the story of Mami Wata, the water spirit who accompanied their slave ancestors from Africa. Maddy soon comes to love the wetlands and the residents of Bon Temps, human and otherwise. So when the Gulf oil spill threatens the town, it is Maddy who must use her magic to save her new home. Some sensitive subject matter may be disturbing to younger readers—Maddy's friend has an alcoholic father who inadvertently hurts him and then later dies in the explosion. Maddy is a brave and hopeful heroine, and the descriptions of the bayou are almost as magical as her legacy. VERDICT Hand this to middle grade readers who enjoy family stories, history, and a dose of fanciful magic.—Laurie Slagenwhite Walters, Brighton District Library, Brighton, MI

Jewell Parker Rhodes spins a coming-of-age tale that's steeped in a perplexing piece of American history with BAYOU MAGIC By KidsReads Following in the tradition of her previous books for children, Jewell Parker Rhodes spins a coming-of-age tale that's steeped in a perplexing piece of American history with BAYOU MAGIC: The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Consistent with her stories, Rhodes often features quiet, unassuming characters who are the least likely to make significant waves in their lives. In BAYOU MAGIC, Rhodes creates 10-year old Madison Isabelle Lavalier Johnson (Maddy) --- the youngest in a family of five worldly-minded sisters, as she prepares to leave New Orleans for the bayou to spend the summer with her Grandmère. Unlike her sisters' disconcerting comments about their grandmother and her strange lifestyle, Maddy has a connection with this unusual woman and she feels like she's living "in a magical cottage deep in the forest."And it is indeed magical as Maddy explores deep into the bayou with a gangly boy named Bear, acquaints herself with the Bayou Bon Temps community, hears Grandmère's firefly stories and, most importantly, sees a mermaid Grandmère calls Mami Wata. In the midst of upbeat moments, Maddy's dreams tell her things aren’t as perfect as they seem. When crude oil starts taking over the waterways after an oilrig explosion, Maddy has to find a way to stop it from destroying Bon Temps.Surrounded with a tight cast of foiled characters, Maddy feels the pressure to get out of her protective shell and face her fears. Two prime foiled examples are Grandmère, whose odd yet encouraging comments have Maddy constantly wondering about life and the environment; and Bear, whose adventuresome spirit keeps Maddy on her toes.Rhodes utilizes other literary tools to keep her narrative fresh and moving. Capturing the unique language of the Louisiana bayou, Rhodes laces her engaging dialogue with a bit of Cajun French. Naturally, Rhodes's plot is replete with the sights, sounds and nuances native to the bayou, and the author uses the setting as a major springboard to discuss environmental and family issues. Bringing all these elements together, Rhodes slowly but deftly builds her storyline by alternating un-hackneyed scene changes within each chapter.Reviewed by Anita Lock

I had never heard of it or the author. My 4th grader found it at the library, and I decided to read it because the African-American girl on the cover piqued my interest. I am a big fan of multiculturalism in literature, though I admit, as an Asian-American, I tend to seek out books by and about Asian-Americans. I can't speak to the authenticity of the African-American experience in this book, but as a reader, I was drawn into the world of the Louisiana bayou along with Maddy, the main character, and I didn't want to leave.Firstly, this book is beautifully written. The writing is very descriptive, even poetic. Metaphors abound.Maddy, the main character, is a city girl from New Orleans who is sent to spend the summer with her grandmother in the Louisiana bayou. She meets a boy named Bear who is self-reliant, independent, and at one with nature. He is a compelling character, and once I met him, I wanted to read more about him.As Maddy is introduced to the bayou, there is a bit of a lesson about environmentalism. As the book progresses, the lesson becomes explicit, a central theme.Faith in things unseen is also an important message. There's a bit of magic realism as Maddy discovers, and struggles to understand, some "gifts" she inherited through her maternal ancestors.About two-thirds of the way through the book, the story takes a very serious turn. Though the events were predictable, having suspected that they would happen did not detract from the book because I was already invested in the characters, and I wanted to see how the story would end.For the parents out there who like to know what to expect, I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that this book doesn't hide the fact that life is complicated. There is a death, and a violent drunk. But both are handled in as gentle a manner as you might expect when narrated from the perspective of a thoughtful 10-year-old girl.

This novella covers two genres, fiction and nonfiction. An elderly man, Tony, with American, German and Australian nationalities, tells his story: how he receives a wedding invitation from a former girlfriend that he hadn’t seen and heard of for decades. This invitation creates emotional upheaval in his life, but also turns his life into a massive challenge. His former girlfriend sends him a photo of herself. She looks beautiful and sexy. He contemplates attending the wedding. But first he has to lose fifty five pounds, that’s twenty five kilograms. That’s how he sees it. He not only wants to attend the wedding, he also wants to make love to his former girlfriend, just once more. At this point the nonfiction part of the story kicks in. Tony tells the reader how he goes about trying to change himself from an old, fat, ugly and sick looking man into a young looking, slim, handsome and healthy man. However, there is one major problem. He doesn’t have a lot of time. The wedding date is his deadline.

Invitation to a Former Girlfriend's Wedding: A novella of life-changing servings, by Fred Schäfer

About the Author Fred Schäfer was born in the south of Germany and left home at the age of nineteen. A few years later he discovered the world of literature. Two of his books, "The Short and Wonderful Life of Henry Hemingway" and "Travelling with Maria", provide insight into the early years of his life. "The Mysterious Man" completes the picture, although not entirely, because "The Mysterious Man" is a novel, not an autobiography. Or is it both? A book in which reality and fiction merge? At the age of thirty six, the author and his family moved to Australia, where they still reside. He worked as an engineer and IT manager. He became a professional speaker and made himself a name as presenter of Think Like A Winner seminars. During those years, he wrote two nonfiction books: "The Solution Within Yourself" and "Success, Money and You". A few years later he published the essence of his seminars in his third nonfiction book, "How to Make Great Things Happen in YOUR LIFE". Fred Schäfer's heart belongs to the world of literature, which to him means fiction. He wrote eight novels, three in German and five in English. His English novels are: "An Almighty Conspiracy", "The Invention of the Big Bang", "The 92-Year-Old Lady Who Made Me Steal a Dead Man's Car", "The Mysterious Man" and "Don't Mention the FBI". "The 92-Year-Old Lady Who Made Me Steal a Dead Man's Car", clearly, is Fred Schäfer's most imaginative literary fiction novel. As the subtitle of the book says, it is a thrilling and seriously funny novel. The author demonstrates his creative power to an almost unimaginable degree. Literary characters from the books of his heroes come alive and attempt something, which would make their authors, if they knew about it, scream in horror or roll over in their graves.

A Quirkily Entertaining Journey By Andrea Parke Invitation to a Former Girlfriend’s Wedding shows, I think, just how good a writer Fred Schafer really is.For one thing, it’s primarily about losing weight - a subject of very little interest to me since I’m a trim and fit sportsperson who works out with weights, swims regularly in the pool and has been known to run for miles along beaches. Losing weight is the last thing I need to worry about.Yet, Mr Schafer kept my interest throughout and did it mainly through the entertaining quality of his writing. The story, such as it is - for it turns out to be more of a breezy self-help manual for overeaters - concerns Tony, a fat, overweight, sick old man who receives an invitation to a former girlfriend’s wedding. After seeing a photo of his former girlfriend (and a surprise is in store here), he decides not only to accept, but to spend 12 months losing weight in hope becoming attractive enough to have a final fling with herThat’s not giving too much away because the story contains a major surprise which you’ll never guess. I will say, however, that its a positive surprise which is well in keeping with the tone of the book. And what’s Clink Eastwood doing in it? You’ll have to find that out for yourself, but again, it’s quite believable and enjoyable. My only beef with this book - small as it is at 14,000 words - was the amount of time spent on how to lose weight and why most people who try to lose weight fail. It’s not until Chapter 21 that we return to Tony’s quest to meet his old girlfriend at her wedding and get on with the plot. But when the plot does resume, its surprising and enjoyable and leaves you with a good feeling.I recommend this book to anyone who needs inspiration to lose weight. Mr Schafer does have a very useful mantra which could help. In fact that mantra can be applied to many other things in life, as he points out.

A Great Story With A Daring Escape From The Overeaters Club By Maggie Fred Schafer’s sprightly novella, Invitation To A Former Girlfriend’s Wedding, is a great read with a very sound moral. It is both fiction and nonfiction. The fictional part is quite humorous. And then there is Tony’s story, but it is mine too and most of the people I know who struggle with overweight. It took me thirty years to learn these lessons, it took Tony a full year, but the reader is in luck because this witty and readable story can be digested in an hour or two. Tony is a fat old guy who wants to look like Clint Eastwood when he shows up at the wedding of his former girlfriend. The only hitch is he is grossly overweight. What to do? First, it is necessary to understand what causes overeating, and this can be reduced to a simple memorable formula... which I won’t give away, of course. Tony learned too that the doctor can help, by adding some motivation. Who wants to take those expensive blood pressure and cholesterol pills that leave you unable to remember your telephone number? That aching back sends the same warning message. I would only add to Tony’s good advice that you need some exercise every day. Sit on a stationary bike as you read the newspaper, or walk a mile. This plus the food advice will strip away the pounds. But if you want to end up like Tony – again, something I can’t give away, it would spoil the story for you – you will have to faithfully follow the advice given in Fred Schafer’s novella, an advice that is not really all that different from what the author wrote in two of his other books which tell you HOW TO GET RICH BY CHANGING YOUR THOUGHT. Great read.

Always something extra By OneOfTheBrontes The reason I enjoy Fred Schäfer's writing so much is that he always manages to combine a great story with something extra, either useful information or some thought-provoking philosophy."Invitation to a Former Girlfriend's Wedding" is no different. It opens with Tony relating a story of how he receives something life changing--an invitation to a former girlfriend's wedding. Later he receives a photograph from her. She is stunning. He has twelve months to lose weight and improve himself before attending the wedding. How he achieves this is quite wonderful, but I won't give any secrets away. The third part of this novella deals with when he attends the wedding and the unexpected consequences of that event. This is a quick read, with images appearing from time to time--some humorous. Although I am a fast reader, I found myself slowing to make the most of what I was reading. That is always a good sign.Mr Schäfer has a fresh and original voice that always delights. I certainly look forward to reading more from this talented author.

PART 6 - GET IN THE BOAT, MEN!Liliane’s Tips for Keeping Track of Your BroodOn a good day, it’s possible for Liliane to lose a cantaloupe in her purse. Thus challenged, she works overtime developing ways to hang on to her possessions, including her child. Here’s what she has to say: I’ve seen parents write their cell phone numbers on a child’s leg with a felt-tip marker . . . effective but crude. Before you resort to that, or perhaps a cattle brand, consider some of the tips I’ve busted my brain dreaming up. My friends—some much ditzier than I—have used them with great success. On your very first day in the parks, teach your kids how to recognize a Disney cast member by pointing out the Disney name tags that they all wear. Instruct your children to find someone with such a name tag if they get separated from you.Same-colored T-shirts for the whole family will help you gather your troops in an easy and fun way. You can opt for just a uniform color or go the extra mile and have the T-shirts printed with a logo such as “The Brown Family’s Assault on the Mouse.” You might also include the date or the year of your visit. Your imagination is the limit. Light-colored T-shirts can even be autographed by the Disney characters.Clothing labels are great, of course. If you don’t sew, buy labels that you can iron on the garment. If you own a cell phone, be sure to include the number on the label. If you do not own a cell phone, put in the phone number of the hotel where you’ll be staying. Another option is a custom-made temporary tattoo with all the pertinent info. They’re cheap, last two weeks, don’t wash off, and solve the problem of having to sew or iron a label on every garment. (They can be purchased online at safetytat.com or tattooswithapurpose.com.)In pet stores you can have name tags printed for a very reasonable price. Theseare great to add to necklaces and bracelets or attach to your child’s shoelaceor belt loop. When you check into the hotel, take a business card of the hotel for each member in your party, especially those old enough to carry wallets and purses.Always agree on a meeting point before you see a parade, fireworks, and nighttime spectacles such as IllumiNations and Fantasmic! Make sure the meeting place is in the park (as opposed to the car or someplace outside the front gate). If you have a digital camera or cell phone camera, you may elect to take a picture of your kids every morning. If they get lost, the picture will show what they look like and what they are wearing. If all the members of your party have cell phones, it’s easy to locate each other.Be aware, however, that the ambient noise in the parks is so loud that you probably won’t hear your cell phone ring. Your best bet is to carry your phone in a front pants pocket and to program the phone to vibrate. If any of your younger kids carry cell phones, secure the phones with a strap. Even better, send text messages.Save key tags and luggage tags for use on items you bring to the parks, including your stroller, diaper bag, and backpack or hip pack.Don’t underestimate the power of the permanent marker, such as a Sharpie. They are great for labeling pretty much anything. Mini-Sharpies are sold as clip-ons and are great for collecting character autographs. The Sharpie will also serve well for writing down the location of your car in the parking lot. (Bob suggests on my son’s forehead.)PART 7 - THE MAGIC KINGDOMLive Entertainment and Parades in the Magic Kingdom: It’ s impossible to take in all the many live entertainment offerings at the Magic Kingdom in a single day. To experience both the attractions and the live entertainment, we recommend that you allocate at least two days to this park. In addition to parades, stage shows, and fireworks, check the daily entertainment schedule (Times Guide) or ask a cast member about concerts in Fantasyland, the Flag Retreat at Town Square, and the appearances of the various bands, singers, and street performers that roam the park daily. WDW live entertainment guru Steve Soares usually posts the Magic Kingdom’s performance schedule about a week in advance at wdwent.com.Following is a short list of daily events with special appeal for families with children:Castle Forecourt StageThe 20-minute Dream-Along with Mickey live show features Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and a peck of princesses and other secondary characters, plus human backup dancers, in a show built around the premise that—quelle horreur!—Donald doesn’t believe in the power of dreams. Crisis is averted through a frenetic whirlwind of song and dance.Merida Meet and Greet at the Fairytale GardenThe garden, formerly the site of Storytime with Belle and the Tangled play and greet, is a small outdoor theater. It received a Scottish Highlands–inspired makeover and is now the home of Merida, the strong-willed heroine from Brave. The new setting has an area in which those waiting to meet Merida can get archery lessons and participate in other activities until it’s their turn to meet Merida. The activity targets the under-5 age group. If you plan on meeting Merida, arrive at least 20–30 minutes early to the staging area. Once the area is at capacity (about 20 children and parents), cast members rope it off. Be forewarned that the entire experiencewill take a whole hour out of your day. The play and greet takes place six to eight times a day; check the daily entertainment schedule (Times Guide) for showtimes.Afternoon ParadeUsually staged at 3 p.m., this parade features floats and marching Disney characters. A new afternoon parade is introduced every year or two. While some of the elements, such as the Disney characters, remain constant, the theme, music, and float design change. Seasonal parades round up the mix. The new Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade includes new floats based on the stories of The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Tangled, and Brave. It features a brand-new original soundtrack with songs from Disney films in addition to a parade theme song.Evening ParadeEvening parade performances vary by season, happening as often as twice a night during the busy times of year, to two or three times a week during the less busy seasons. We rate the evening parade as not to be missed. The Main Street Electrical Parade (MSEP) is the current nightly cavalcade at the Magic Kingdom. Its soundtrack, “Baroque Hoedown,” is a synthesizer-heavy testament to what prog rock might have been with access to modern technology and antidepressants. In our opinion, the Magic Kingdom’s nighttime parade is always the best in Walt Disney World, and the Electrical Parade is the standard against which everything else is judged. Disney is known to swap out parades (MSEP replaced SpectroMagic in 2010) and may do so at any time. If you’re at Disney World while MSEP is running, make a special trip to see it.Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Street PartyStarting at the train station end of Main Street, U.S.A., and working toward the central hub, this short walk incorporates about a dozen guests with a handful of floats, Disney characters, and entertainers. Music is provided by one of Disney’s latest artists, and there’s a good amount of interaction between the entertainers and the crowd.

Not happy so far By Erin Not happy so far.I bought this book to help me wade through all the information needed to plan an upcoming trip to Disney World. Imagine my dismay when attempting to read some relevant information in the book, only to be directed to the authors' website...where I need to subscribe to get the content I purchased the book for. Had I known that, I wouldn't have purchased the book at $17.99. For that price, the book should come with a code for a free subscription to access the material, or should just include the material in the first place.

We actually have the 2013 and 2010 books. If you have an earlier book I recommend you just buy the scheduler if already understand the new fastpass+ system. If you don't understand it this book will help some but the section that explains it isn't all that great and I learned more online at wdinfo, etc.The book series is good don't get me wrong....but if you have a fairly recent one I would just recommend updating your online subscription so you can plan your day out on your mobile phone. BTW a smartphone is almost a must at Disney now. You can't even make reservations at a restaurant without one (well its very difficult without one).

I have to say that compared with our first-ever trip to Disney in 2011, this book made a WORLD of difference in 2013 in terms of getting on every ride we wanted multiple times and just generally informing us of what's out there and what is available to do. This time, however, I'm disappointed slightly by the book. It still gave me the same great detailed information on the parks, including each ride and restaurant, and the basic touring plans to get you from A-Z at the parks. However, I felt that this time there is much more of an emphasis on pushing readers to the website where you have to spend money in addition to the book you've already purchased to get more specific touring plans to meet your needs. Disney is already such a time-consuming vacation to plan. I had hoped this very LONG book would be sufficient in terms of a planning tool. Also, because of the length and complexity of the book, I wish there was a brief checklist somewhere in the book to list out which attractions you want to use FastPass+ for so that you have all of those in one spot when you get the opportunity in advance to book those things. Now I need to keep track in a separate spot with my list and the suggested times to make those reservations. The same thing applies for the advanced dining reservations -- a list of the restaurants that you absolutely MUST have advance dining for would be greatly appreciated. The other thing, and this may be something I didn't realize before, but the touring plans (even the 2-day ones which you would expect to include "everything") don't hit some of the "big" rides. For example, the Animal Kingdom 1-day plan doesn't include the Everest roller coaster, which is a headline attraction. I realize the plan is for "small kids" but the height limitation is only 44", which my 5 year old already far exceeds. Now I need to review list of rides in the touring plans back against the chapter that discussed all the rides to make sure that there wasn't a ride we would like to see that is similarly not included. In addition, for authors who make such a big deal about needing to go back and take naps midday (with which I fully agree having three children ages 5 and under myself), the 1-day Animal Kingdom touring plan for families with small children seems to have no nap built in. Is this intentional - or just an oversight?I hate to nitpick but I think my previously glowing impression of this book from 2013 simply contrasts heavily with what I found this time around. I feel like I should have very few questions after reading this. Unfortunately, some basics like 1) Can I use my wristband for the park tickets if I buy them at a non-Disney vendor (which I still don't seem to understand whether I can or how I make this happen if it's allowed) and 2) Are the 180-day advance reservations doable for the entire week of your stay on the 180th day, or do you have to log on each day that's 180-days out from your desired reservation? For a family who will be spending a lot of time and money on this vacation, small things make a big difference. Unfortunately, I feel like there were some major oversights in this edition.
