By Splashes Into Books A great mystery thriller with robust, well developed characters, hidden motivations, action packed and set in beautiful locations. The plot is well woven, with plenty of clues, red herrings, discoveries and suspense, keeping the reader engaged throughout - and the ending is just something else - WOW! This is a great story, well written, riveting and one I have no hesitation in highly recommending!Asmir and Dante are off on an adventure holiday, travelling on bus number 8, around New Zealand. Asmir has arranged it all in an attempt to cheer up Dante who has had a bad year with his Uni results, his Uncle and breaking up with his girlfriend.The participants in the adventure holiday are a motley crew, mainly teenagers, seeking an action packed month journeying to some of the most scenic and rugged areas of New Zealand and having opportunities to explore caves, rivers and themselves whilst doing so. When one of their group dies whilst they’re black water rafting through glow worm caves, Dante sees something which makes him believe this was murder and not an accident - but he can’t prove it and it was only a fleeting glimpse so he tells Asmir but the two decide to keep quiet but keep their eyes open for any evidence, just in case. As the journey continues, the two friends try to stay aware to potential danger, trying to identify the killer and prevent any further deaths. However by doing so they could also be endangering their own lives. What could possibly link members of the disparate group? What is the killer’s motivation? By Liz Barnsley Really enjoyed this tense, claustrophobic and very readable tale from Joel Arcanjo - I can't imagine actually, anything worse than being stuck on a bus with a lot of strangers even if they were all lovely people - in the case of the "Number 8" bus of the title, where things are just a little strange, it would be my worst nightmare...It's a cleverly constructed novel of the type that I really devour - the set up is perfect and as we start to head into the main plot it becomes very addictive. I'm certainly not going to give anything away, but it is very atmospheric with a terrific flow to it throughout.Our characters are well drawn and emotionally connectable - I was especially fond of Dante who is simply trying to get his life back on track and ends up in an untenable situation.Overall then a great read - it was fast for me because I did not want to put it down until I found out the resolution. Just think all those people together in a small space, with one person in charge of safety. (Don't even get me started on airplanes!)And I've always pretty much hated to holiday with a bus being the only way of getting around. So The Number 8 is pretty much the essence of what i consider being the seventh circle of hell. The 8 refers to the number of the bus friends Dante and Asmir gets on for a tour of New Zealand. They are pretty much stuck in transportation hell with some horrible people on the bus with them. Dante and Asmir start to fear for their safety and sanity when something turns the trip into a terrifying ordeal. (No glowing reports on www.tripadvisor.com, I take it?)You can't help but get mesmerized by the whole story, as it's so easy to imagine things like these happening to normal people.I loved it.
