I had purchased just the book for her at a thrift store, and when she found out that it actually had originally come in a set, she brought me her money and had me order it.She loves playing school with her American Girl dolls. She loves all of the cute accessories, especially the alphabet strip.

They received this book for Christmas and were immediately off transforming a cardboard box into a school and fashioning 'desks' out of old jewelry boxes and popsicle sticks. I highly recommend them.

During August, 2011, Ernie, Ellyn, Gregg, and Catharine Found are hit by heartbreak and tragedy. Seventeen-year old Caroline Found, aka Line, doesn t survive a moped accident. Twelve days later Ellyn Found loses her battle with cancer. They are not the only ones mourning. Caroline was a much beloved student at her high school and the captain of a volleyball team set to win its second state title. Missing both their team leader and the encouragement of their team mom, Ellyn Found, they can barely survive practice. Thoughts of another state championship feel entirely impossible. Is it possible for good to emerge from bad? This is a deep look into a raw, heartbreaking story of loss. From losing Caroline and Ellyn, to an unforgettable state tournament, Live Like Line explores the full powers of community, family, team, love, faith, friendship, and life. All of us have, or someday will, deal with grief, it is never easy. For many it can seem insurmountable, but as well-known author Jim Harrison once wrote, It only gradually occurred to me that our wounds are far less unique than our cures. This quote captures precisely what author Bill Hoeft comes to believe and discover. He reaches out to the Found family to research, study, explore, interview, and discovers a whole community.

Live Like Line, Love Like Ellyn, by Bill Hoeft

Review It is difficult to comprehend how heartbreaking the story of the Found family is a loving mother, Ellyn, diagnosed with a terminal cancer, a beautiful teen-age daughter, Caroline, killed in a freakish moped accident both buried within a fortnight. That the father, Ernie, somehow managed to courageously rise above this devastating calamity, to carry on with grace, and that the town and Caroline s school and volleyball team came together to cherish the memory of the two women, is the story of unbounded love. That there is a victory in sports, as well, is but a glorious bonus. Nothing can cure the sadness, nothing can undo the horror, but what Bill Hoeft's book tells us is that even the worst tragedy can uplift us if we care enough and are unafraid to bare our hearts. --Frank Deford, Senior Contributing Writer Sports Illustrated, NPR commentator, correspondent on HBOs Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, & best-selling authorA powerful, heartbreaking, triumphant story, told with honesty and conviction. A stirring testament to the strength and courage of a Family, to the enduring bonds of Community, and to the eternal, transcendent, healing power of Love --Dan Knight, Steinway Artist, Pianist, ComposerNot all have the good fortune to know a Caroline a rare and great spirit who instinctively knows how to feed the pulse and soul of everyone she encounters. Bill Hoeft shares this rare story of grit through grief which transforms a family, a team, and a town to embrace a new legacy, to LIVE LIKE LINE. --Geoffrey Lauer, Executive Director, Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa

I'm not a book critic - but I know what I like and what I don't By Marsha Grady Having known the Found family personally, I was one of those who was a little leery of a book about Caroline and Ellyn. Theirs is a story that still breaks my heart, but I know that their family and Bill want to share inspiration with others - and I think this book does that. I'm not a book critic - but I know what I like and what I don't. I appreciate how Bill's sensitivity and love for the family shines through. It's a story with lessons for all ages.

Cotton The books in this series are great to read. I enjoyed them. They give a peek into a life style that most of us will only ever read about. I do have a couple of things that are wrong about this series. Whoever did the proof reading did a very poor job and the books are way to short. 130+ pages hardly make a book. All three books could be combined into one decent length book and if money was the reason for dividing them into three books, a couple of dollars could be added to the cost of buying the complete story in one book. The story line is a very pleasant and quick read and I did enjoy the books but would have liked them all in one book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful series By Kindle Customer I loved the Amish Tours series. I was happy when book 3 came out so I could see what happened to that nasty deacon who kept interfering with a poor widow who was trying to provide for her family. I was glad that things worked out with her and John and wish there was another book to follow. I couldn't wait to get to the end, but sorry when it ended. I would like to know if Caleb decided to go out into the world or stay with his faith. Anyone who decides to get this book will not be disappointed.

Since book one and two made me really get behind the female lead and want her to win in her struggle to keep her farm against the opposition of the evil Deacon Byler, I was excited to read book 3! I'm cheering for the lady and falling in love with the hero! Take that you evil deacon! Rachel Stoltzfus is a really good author!

At the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation's leaders, fifteen-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain: the boys' exploits and eventual imprisonment helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. Interweaving his own narrative with the recollections of Knud himself, here is Phillip Hoose's inspiring story of these young war heroes.

The Boys Who Challenged Hitler: Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club (Bccb Blue Ribbon Nonfiction Book Award (Awards)), by Phillip Hoose

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—In April 1940, occupying German forces made Denmark a "protectorate" of the Third Reich. The Danish government accepted the occupation, but a small group of teen boys, angry at their nation's cowardice, formed the secret Churchill Club to resist the Germans and conducted a six-month spree of sabotage and destruction. Incorporating lengthy first-person reminiscences of one of the group's leaders, Knud Pedersen, Hoose describes how the club recruited members, exploited their youth and innocent looks to deceive their parents and the Germans, appropriated weapons, and carried out guerilla-style attacks from their bicycles. Although the boys were eventually arrested and imprisoned, their exploits made them national heroes, shamed many adults, and fueled Danish resistance. After the war, Winston Churchill honored their efforts. The book is well organized, effectively integrating Pedersen's vivid descriptions of his group's motives, determination, and sometimes foolhardy bravery within the larger narrative, which includes information about Denmark, the war, and the boys' families and lives. Sidebars, detailed maps, and period photos supplement the text. Often reading like a thriller, this title puts a human face on the often-overlooked Danish Resistance and complements titles such as Michael Burgan's Refusing to Crumble: The Danish Resistance in World War II (Compass Pt., 2010) and Ellen Levine's Darkness over Denmark: The Danish Resistance and the Rescue of the Jews (Holiday House, 2000). VERDICT A captivating work that will appeal to many readers.—Mary Mueller, Rolla Public Schools, MO

Their government thought to protect their people by allowing Germany to take over. It did prevent loss of life, and the Danish people were able to live their lives more-or-less normally. In neighboring Norway, it was a different story. The Norwegians resisted, tooth and nail. Not every Dane was happy with their government's decision, and that's where this relatively unknown story comes in. Knud and Jens Pedersen, mere schoolboys, got some friends together and began actively sabotaging their German occupiers. When they were finally found, arrested, and imprisoned, the movement grew and spread. This book is the story of "The Churchill Club," those schoolboys who set off a movement in their nation. The story is told in both the third-person, with supporting historical research, and in first-person by Knud himself, as well as a few others. There are also photographs and illustrations.Possible objectionable material: Many, if not all, of the boys smoke. They are imprisoned and poorly treated. They set things on fire. General hooliganism, but for a purpose.Who might like it: Anyone interested in WWII history, especially those parts that are not as well-known. Girls are minor characters in the book, but do have a presence. The book is aimed at ages 12-18.Thanks to NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy.

My grandfather was from Nibe as well as my grandmother. On my father's side I am German. I was born in 1933 and too young to be aware of the surrender of the Danes to the occupation of Denmark. My family was silent in the years that followed, so when I chose to read this book, I was shocked to learn of the Danish attitude regarding the Nazis.I have great admiration for the young men and women with the courage it took to stand up to their countrymen and try to make a difference. It is this kind of heroism that makes me proud of my heritage.I found this book to be very enlightening and an easy read.

Danish Resistance to the Nazis By Ms. Yingling In this wonderful piece of narrative nonfiction, Hoose brings us the experience of Knud Pedersen in his own words. As a Dane, the teenaged Pedersen was perturbed that his government had caved so easily to the Nazis demands, agreeing to cooperate with the Nazi soldiers in exchange for relative safety. While Norway was fighting the Nazis, it took a while before opposition to the Nazis took hold in Denmark, and that opposition was started by a group of teenagers headed by Pedersen. At first, the boys contented themselves with painting graffiti and doing small amounts of damage to Nazi property, but soon escalated to major acts of arson as well as stealing weapons and accumulating quite an arsenal. When the Danish people saw that not everyone was acquiescing to Nazi demands, the Resistance was able to take off. The Churchill Club, as the group called itself, continued to bedevil the Nazis, although the boys found it difficult to think about actually killing the soldiers. Eventually, the group was found out and arrested, and spent a lot of time in various jails. By this point, however, the Resistance was going full force. Luckily for the boys, they were tried by Danish officials and, in part because of their age, were not sentenced to death. Many readers want to know all there is to know about World War II, and this is an absorbing read that hits close to home. Read it with Jablonski's graphic novel series about the French Resistance (Resistance, Defiance, Victory), Preus' Norwegian Resistance novel, Shadow on the Mountain, or the Couloumbis' War Games, which centers on the Greek Resistance.Based on intensive interviews with Knudsen, as well as Knudsen's amazing archive of photographs and research, this well-researched book tells a riveting tale of people who stood up for what they believed, even though they were very young. I have always been interested in the various resistance groups, especially since most of them utilized my primary source of transportation-- the bicycle! This was a great length, had amazing primary source information, and was extremely interesting. I am so glad that Hoose followed up on a forgotten e mail with Pedersen, because this was a fantastic book.

By NatashaMay Great premises and I’m interested to read the rest of the 12 signs but Pisces was a bit annoying. They kept saying that she was in danger but she kept walking around by herself and getting in trouble. I almost felt like the author herself is Pisces so she probably made Pisces more to her taste than to incorporate actual Pisces traits. My mom is a Pisces, my grandfather was Pisces and a couple of my friends are Pisces and I still couldn’t relate to this character. I also wish the story had more depth to it. It was a basic love story with a couple of twists that weren’t that surprising or suspenseful. Hope the next book is better.

Aries are stubborn By MMurphy I'm an Aries so I was interested in seeing what the author would do with this particular character, and I think she did a great job of weaving the Aries traits into the hero of this novel. To say Aries was a flawed human being would be an understatement. During the course of this book the character grew a lot. I also enjoyed the way the author dealt with Aries medical issues. Great research made it very interesting.

Mainly the biggest twist is one I wont mention so I dont ruin it for others. Just WOW!The rest of this story was just as amazing as Pisces! I love this authors writing and way of telling her stories. She just jumps right in and grabs you. Love all the action and adventure.

The digital illustrations are charming and humorous. The story is a play on the Oscars – Sock Monkey is nominated for an “Oswald” award for best supporting toy. Sock Monkey has to take a bath to get ready – and he is afraid of baths. His stuffed animal friends help him get clean and he is off to the awards. Will Sock Monkey win? You will be surprised at the answer! This is a fun book and great for children who do not like to take baths.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Getting Cleaned Up By tvtv3 In SOCK MONKEY TAKES A BATH, Sock Monkey has been nominated for a prestigious Oswald Award for his acting. However, in order to attend the ceremony he has to do something he has never done in his entire life: take a bath. It's a fun little book that many children will enjoy as they, too, are often not pleased to take baths. A welcome addition to the "Sock Monkey" series.

By Dad of Divas While I have yet to see the Inside Out movie, this was a great retelling of the movie from the perspectives of the characters. I loved seeing the differences between the characters and so did my girls. It was so unique to see how you see the world in different ways based on what emotion is seeing the situation. This is a great book for kids, as they will be able to better understand their own emotions!*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. This is a gorgeous hard-cover book my kids like looking at By Meredith This is a gorgeous hard-cover book my kids like looking at. It's a bit above their age range, but would be the perfect gift for a school-age child working to sort out all the emotions they are dealing with!

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. then Disgust, then Fear By Ash I would give it three and a half stars.to four.I assume it tells the whole movie story but just paraphrasing. The whole book is about the five emotions first-person point of views of the story. It goes from Joy's point of view of the story, then Disgust, then Fear, then Anger, and then Sadness. Although the concept was original, It was not necessary to have all the emotions point of views. I can understand Joy's and Sadness's retelling because they are the main characters of the plot. But, the other three were just retelling of the same story (Of them without Joy and Sadness) only with some small changes. It became extremely boring but I read through them. To make it more boring it was all in paraphrase and not a feeling of individual stories. Plus, the book was too long and stretch everything except the main characters stories.I wish it went from Joy and Sadness to short few pages of the other three or had them all together and use third person omniscient.

Dead Silence (A Valkyrie Novel - Book 5) (The Valkyrie Series), by T.G. Ayer

About the Author I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves – it works wonderfully… My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain crosseyed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Shocking End to an Epic Journey By Paranormal Trance Reviews The Valkyrie journey with T.G. Ayer has sadly come to an end. Hours have been spent going on journeys to new lands, developing relationships with fictional characters,  and enjoying great writing. Most of the Valkyrie series is an epic adventure. As this is the final installment in the series it takes on a dystopian vibe in preparation for the battle of Ragnarok. There is more action than adventure. There is a lot of emotional angst to overcome as Bryn has not only laid her best friend to rest, but her first boyfriend as well. I truly felt the cloud of darkness that swept away Bryn on this emotional passage. Loki became enemy number one in my book as he caused vast amounts of demise with no qualms over the pain he pushed on everyone. The ending caught me by total surprise.  It's hard to describe it without giving anything away. In a sense it is more of a short literary twist than plot twist. Venturing through mountains of journeys with fictional characters the norm has become to expect the unexpected and never the prediction.  This final installment is going throw people for a loop. Grab your copy today to find out what all of the hype is about. Want to start this journey?  The first book is free on amazon. A 5 star read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. If you are of Nordic decent or just love stories about Odin and Thor you have to read these 5 books. By Jacqueline Perry WOW. I love her books. I have all 5 of the Valkyrie Novels and love everyone. No spoiler alert, but if I was that kind of person. Well anything I could tell you about the story would only make you want to read these books for yourself. They are filled with the Nordic gods and their legends. I wish these books were on the recommended reading list in school as they would make learning, at least about the myths of the Nordic people, so much more pleasant.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An exciting conclusion By Kindle Customer While this portion of the story comes to a conclusion, I look forward to a more adult setting for further adventures. I do want to point out that the editing could have used some improvement; there were a lot of grammatical errors. However, the mythology was great and I still recommend this series.

Born a humble girl in what is now Albania, Agnes Bojaxhiu lived a charitable life. She pledged herself to a religious order at the age of 18 and chose the name Sister Teresa, after the patron saint of missionaries. While teaching in India, where famine and violence had devastated the poor, Teresa shed her habit and walked the streets of Calcutta tending to the needs of the destitute. Her charity work soon expanded internationally, and her name remains synonymous with compassion and devotion to the poor.

Mother Teresa stared out the window of the train as it made its way from the crowded city of Calcutta, India, to the mountain resort town of Darjeeling in September 1946.

The Indian countryside was very beautiful. But the train ride took many hours. With lots of twists and turns and zigzags to get up the mountain, the train moved slowly. That was okay, though. It gave Mother Teresa plenty of time to think.

Mother Teresa was traveling from St. Mary’s School for girls to her annual retreat in Darjeeling. A retreat is a good place to get away from the noise and distractions of everyday life, and to spend quiet time in prayer and reflection. It was the perfect time to think about God and to get energized for the coming school year.

I would certainly hope the authors verify the facts that they present. Mother Teresa was not born in what is now Albania. She was born in Skopje, which is now the Republic of Macedonia. It gives me little confidence in the other books in this series.

My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

“A great storyteller.”―Paulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist

Malba Tahan is the creation of a celebrated Brazilian mathematician looking for a way to bring some of the mysteries and pleasures of mathematics to a wider public. The adventures of Beremiz Samir, The Man Who Counted, take the reader on a journey in which, time and again, Samir summons his extraordinary mathematical powers to settle disputes, give wise advice, overcome dangerous enemies, and win for himself fame, fortune, and rich rewards. We learn of previous mathematicians and come to admire Samir’s wisdom and patience. In the grace of Tahan’s telling, these stories hold unusual delights for the reader. 34 illustrations

Amazon.com Review Here's a delightful little book that combines the joys of mathematical recreation with some fine storytelling. It follows the Arabian adventures of a man with remarkable mathematical skills, which he uses to settle conflict and give wise advice. The tales of his travels involve the solving of mathematical puzzles and sharing insights from the minds of some of history's great mathematicians. In reading it, you can almost smell the spices and feel the desert wind. You just don't find this kind of atmosphere in books about mathematics.

From Library Journal Puzzle books can be tedious (unless you like that sort of thing), but not this one. First published in Brazil in 1949 by the mathematician Julio de Melo e Sousa (Tahan is the imaginary Arab author he claimed to have translated), it is a series of delightful "Arabian nights"-style tales, with each story built around a classic mathematical puzzle. The puzzles fit into the stories so naturally that they are a necessary part of the fantasy. The hero is a Persian mathematician and mystic named Beremiz who uses his powers of calculation like a magic wand to amaze and entertain people, settle disputes, find justice and, finally, win the heart of a beautiful princess. Reading the stories is as much fun as trying to solve the puzzles. For adults and children.- Amy Brunvand, Fort Lewis Coll. Lib., Durango, Col.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “I love The Man Who Counted. The book transports you into a magical world of Bedouins, viziers, sheiks, princes, and kings, rich in references to Islamic traditions and locations in the Middle East. The math is gentle, accessible, and drives the stories.” (Alex Bellos, author of The Grapes of Math)

By slandau@deltanet.com I've read The Man Who Counted some 30/35 years ago in its original Brazilian edition. My book has desappeared long ago, but I've never forgotten its content. Last year, while vacationing in Rio, I was browsing through a book store and came across with a new edition of Tahan's book, also in the Portuguese language. Coming back home, I checked on Amazon.com and was delighted to learn that an English version of the Man Who Counted was available. I ordered a copy and gave it to my 9 year old son, who loved the book, as much as I did when I was about his age. Malba Tahan presents practical mathematical problems and curiosities by telling the story of Beremiz Samir, a man who lived in the ancient Arabia, and who had an incredible ability for counting and calculating. Beremiz was a simple and humble man that utilized his mathematical skills with remarkable fairness and common sense. Traveling from his hometown of Samarra to the ancient Baghdad, Beremiz, on his way, helps merchands, family members and friends to settle their personal disputes about money, properties, etc... Beremiz's mathematical wisdom spreads rapidly through the region, and soon he is invited to the Royal Palace to give advise to sheiks and to the King himself. The arithmrtic and calculations in The Man Who Counted are based in real problems ecountered by Beremiz and the people he meets on his way. Along with the mathematical curiosities, Tahan also teaches valuable lessons of life, all presented in a narrative which makes you read this book as a novel, and go back to parts of it once you're done. This book is specially recommended for young people. With its collection of curious practical problems, and great storytelling, The Man Who Counted will probably stir the attention even of those kids that "hate" math. The ones who appreciate math will definitely love this book and, very likely, will never forget it.

Opens your heart and mind to the beauty of mathematics By Young Kim I first read this book in the original Portuguese many years ago, when I was still in grade school. Imagine my surprise when I found a copy in English! This is a truly marvelous book. It recounts the life of a humble, but wise sheep herder in ancient Arabia who through the power and beauty of mathematics and logic lives the greatest adventures. It tackles in beautiful form some basic principles of mathematics, and teaches the reader the power of logical thinking. A book for all ages, highly recommended.

I am so wrapped up in the beauty and intricity of mathematics that I forget that I really "hate" doing math!! This book not only gives fun puzzles to solve, but also forces you to see the wonder of mathematics. I would say more, but I don't want to bore you.. all I can say is that it's enchanting, wonderful, and you will never, ever regret buying it nor will you ever look at math the same way again.
