When Bill Bannister meets Dr. Sally Smith, love blossoms immediately. Unfortunately there is just the small problem of Lottie Higginbotham, former actress, serial bride, and human fireball, with whom Bill is already involved. The well-meaning interference of Bill’s old friend, Squiffy Tidmouth, once married to Lottie, only complicates matters further, until everything is straightened out in a series of comic encounters at Bill’s ancestral home and everyone lives happily ever after.

By Ot If you are considering this book as your baby steps into the world of Wodehouse, venture elsewhere, young neophyte, this one is not for you. Don't get me wrong, it has all the elements of a Wodehouse romantic comedy, but it's not as strong. Might I suggest Something Fresh (The Collector's Wodehouse) as your place of embarkation? That book, if you are one of the chosen, will knock you off your feet. For those of you who have bested many of Plum's finest, but haven't read Doctor Sally, it's a trifle in length and scope but still contains some of the masters unique creations, such as:"He spoke with a loving warmth which would have excited the respectful envy of the author of the Song of Solomon."Pip PipOtto

By Sandhya Sriraman Sally is one of Wodehouse's typical girls - charmingly attractive, pert, and witty. And not unaware of the hero's charms! The way she asks him to put out his tongue and gives her diagnosis on it, when he is making declarations of his everlasting love for her, is not so rude as charming! Plum can make his characters say the most outrageous things and still get away with them, and you will still end up holding your sides and laughing at them, and loving them.

Some nice moments, but not one of his classics and an irritating lead By Trevor Kettlewell Capably done – Wodehouse on a bad day is better than most people on a good one – but this didn’t give me as much joy as he has in other books.Spoilers.Squiffy is a pleasure, but Bill is just too unpleasant company for most of the time, and his ultimate redemption didn’t make sense – it was important earlier that he couldn’t find satisfaction in work (like the pig farm), and Sally had him bang to rights as an infantile waster, having a tantrum when he couldn’t have what he wanted. The abrupt revelation that he really was a serious worker jarred – much as you can see Wodehouse delighting in the sketch style humour of the gel becoming … ahem … overwhelmed with desire … with the reverse of the classic words that had left her cold (“Oh, Bill, tell me more about bacteria and butter tonnage! Oh!!).Otherwise Bill was charmless and ill-tempered (not in a funny way) and there for too much of the time, and even Sally, who was initially refreshing and without a hint of ill-will, became more smug than self-assured. Moreover Bill hasn’t shown himself vaguely worthy – that she would fall for this grumpy ass reflects poorly on her.Wodehouse, as ever, is all over his narration, and the idea was workable, but the particular interplay of characters for me meant it didn’t soar – and when Wodehouse soars, it doesn’t get much better.
