A Clear Solution is a hilarious look at what happens when you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time – complete with homicidal bank managers. All that lab technician Daniel Dreghorn wants is a better job, more money, a new flat – oh, and perhaps to meet a few more girls. It’s not much to ask of life, is it? All his dreams are answered with one visit to a faulty cash machine, but is it too good to be true? Yes, Daniel, it is… Daniel’s life goes from bad to mad as a series of deaths are attributed to him and some very shady characters start to believe he is more than he seems. As Daniel’s colleagues at the university become suspicious of his actions, madcap Professor Farquharson sees him as a way of achieving a long-held desire… Can Daniel avoid being drawn into his boss’s crazy schemes? Can he avoid the attentions of a bent copper? Are Dr Bernini’s doughnuts all they seem to be?

By The Kindle Book Review This book is the meandering tale of Daniel Dreghorn, a lab technician at a University chemistry department, who stumbles into some bizarre situations courtesy of his job and those around him. From babbling professors, dim-witted detectives and sultry students, there's a fair mix of characters in Daniel's life, few of which he is particularly enamoured with.A Clear Solution starts out in interesting enough fashion, with Daniel succumbing to the feminine wiles of an attractive young student and compromising his academic integrity in the process. Once word gets out that he can be 'bought' in this way it doesn't take long before others come seeking his help. Soon things get out of hand and Daniel is in way over his head. The promise of the early chapters soon fades, however, and the story fails to really get going, by about halfway through the book it's beyond unclear where the author is going. The randomness of events and eccentricity of characters doesn't help to streamline the plot and whole story arcs are ignored or unfinished. The book becomes increasingly difficult to follow and there isn't really any sign of a reward for doing so.Unfortunately if the middle third of the book is underwhelming, it only goes downhill from there. The 'second act' culminates in a scene where almost all of the available characters descend on one location, most with no real reason to be there, leading to huge confusion as to who is saying or doing what. I'm sure an effort was made to highlight the confusion felt by the protagonist, but it has the unfortunate side effect of confusing the reader more so.There are some funny moments throughout the book, but they feel a little contrived at times. Whole plot lines feel like they have only been inserted in order to reach a concluding comic scene. Often it's not worth the set up. It's also hard to believe the sex appeal of Daniel who is at best an idiot, at worst a misanthrope. Yet two attractive young students throw themselves at him, as well as countless middle-aged wives. It's rare that a book descends so steeply into oblivion, what was a solid 5* book at the starts slid to 4* by the bloated middle and eventually reached 3* status by its conclusion. It's hard to write a comic farce but check out my review of Remy's Dilemma to see how it can work.MJ Meads (The Kindle Book Review)“The Kindle Book Review received a free copy of this book for an independent, fair, and honest review. Daniel Dreghorn is a chemistry lab technician at Coatdyke University, Scotland. Meant only as a temporary job he's already been there five years.Daniel is ear marked by student Susan Bradshaw as someone who could help her "pass" her exams after he is easily persuaded to give her the correct answer to her practical experiment. Susan's father is a manager at Barnaby's Bank and provides Daniel with large sums of money to get copies of the exam papers.Whilst trying to get the papers, Daniel is discovered by Dr Bernini, who assumes Daniel has discovered information on his dodgy donuts. Bernini's then keen to keep Daniel on side. Meanwhile Professor Smart wants a chat with Daniel. In this comedy of errors everyone has a hidden agenda and they all think Daniel can help them as he totters from one disastrous scene to another. I must mention Sadie who works in the canteen, she had a wonderful Scottish accent.Comedy is a very hard genre to get across to the reader, I could see this working well as a TV show, it ticks many boxes of a classic British sit-com.
