This book is perfect for me to introduce how to read books to my 1st graders. I love how it even talks about using voices for different characters, stopping to ask questions and predict, and using your voice for scary or exciting moments. The illustrations add themselves perfectly to the story. I can't wait to read this to my new class!

Ms. Messner has written a sweet book that will be perfect for bedtimes and classrooms everywhere. I like how the book has a story within a story within a story (“The Princess, The Dragon, and The Robot” (the story the characters read)). I like that the MCs are a kid and a dog – not 2 kids. The illustrations are amazing. They capture the spirit of the book perfectly.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Great introduction to the world of reading By Helpful Advice ‘How to Read a Story’, written by Kate Messner and beautifully and humorously illustrated by Mark Siegel, is a beautiful book that speaks about the importance of reading, but even more of the fact how enjoyable world of books is when we dive in it completely – the result is creation of a book that could be read numerously together with own children or in school.At the beginning of the story, a young reader will be introduced to the main character – a boy who is about to begin reading the book. Messner and Siegel are about to help him and every kid around with the helpful tips easy to follow how to read (and fully enjoy) a story.1st step: Find a Story – it’s not easy to pick one, but pick the one you like (as long as it’s not too scary)2nd step: Find a Reading Buddy – it’s great to read in company and reading buddy could be anyone, including the family dog3rd step: Find a Cozy Reading Spot – whichever place pleases you and your reading buddy, it’s going to be ok (as long as it’s not too cold or hot)4th step: Look at the Book's Cover – a book cover could be a great start to guess what particular book might be about5th step: Open the book (and start reading)…There are 10 steps overall, though I do not want to spoil the joy of the book first discovery with your children. Still, the great thing is that when the young reader will get to the 10th step, the story can start again, with another book and the first step, over and over again enjoying.‘How to Read a Story’ is another book from Kate Messner I fully enjoyed and though it’s difficult to compare, I would say this is her best work so far. With her simple yet profound story, the author managed to emphasize the importance and beauty of reading from the very youth, especially given that usually the knowledge of letters is associated with the knowledge how to read – that is not the case, making many parents wonder why their kids do not read or do not like to read.Therefore this book can be a great starting point for learning how to read when children are still reading the children books. I particularly liked the part when author is saying it’s ok to read again the book we loved and that is completely normal to have some books children not like - in that case would the best to choose another book, not forcing the children to read what they do not like.When it comes to the artwork, Mark Siegel skillfully turned the story into the great pictures, making child to see exactly the scenes Messner pictured with her words, while adding a welcome drop of humor in the process.Overall, Kate Messner and Mark Siegel created a great piece for children, a picture book for which is not difficult to assume that will quickly become a favorite book of many children, librarians and teachers, so I can heartily recommend it as a great introduction to the world of reading.
