Gilhooly This is book 4 in the Magical Animal Friends series where two girls, Lily and Jess, have a series of encounters in Friendship Forest with magical talking animals. These books are modeled after the popular Rainbow Fairies books, their predecessors by the same author. Children do not need to read the books in order, but could pick the books because they like the cover animal, as each book emphasizes a few tips about the feature animal. My 7 yo enjoys reading these series as well, but she has other books that are her favorites. My 9 yo reads at an 8th grade level and reads these books in ~20 mins, my 7 yo reads more at 3rd grade level and usually reads them over the course of two evenings at bedtime.Parent Rundown:+ It is not necessary to read the books in order to enjoy this book about cats.+ This is a beginning chapter book designed for budding readers, but can be enjoyed by children through mid-elementary grades.+ There is usually no potty humor, see minor note below.+ Books contain magic and fantasy as well as an evil witch, Grizelda. My 9yo comments that Grizelda never really does anything which eventually makes for anticlimactic reading.+ Plot summary: This is the fourth book featuring the no-good Gremlin-like Boggitts that work for the witch Grizelda, and in this exciting round, the girls discover a series of secret underground tunnels in Friendship Forest. The Boggitts plan to collapse some support pillars in the underground tunnels. This book brings the Boggitts' problem to a close when the girls find a home in a stinky swamp for the Boggitts.+ Grizelda makes a finale appearance where the Boggitts quit working for her, and she is too lazy to do any direct evil-doing herself.+ **In this book, the Boggitts engage in some bad behavior referenced in one sentence on pg.60: they smell bad, one picked his nose, and one is "scratching herself" for whatever that's worth.+ It's a cute enough resolution to books 1 - 3 in this series.+ Book contains a sketched illustration mapping Friendship Forest in front, a puzzle page of a very simple dot-to-dot and a cat-care guide page in the back.+ Expect the content to be a tad vapid, as the Rainbow Fairies certainly were, but these books are a step up from the Rainbow Fairies, and they encourage children to read more when they need a mental break from school work.
