Max Jennings is in a bad mood. It’s not anything you did; it’s just that secrets from her past make it her natural state of being. But she’s not going to talk about it or share her feelings, so don’t bother asking.

Max’s bad mood means that very few people actually truly understand her or know that her secret dream is to be a pastry chef. When a rare opportunity to work for world-famous Avis Phillips presents itself, Max jumps at the chance. Avis and her staff aren’t stingy with the tough love, so Max spends every spare minute practicing her craft. As she bakes brownies and custards, cookies and galettes, she builds an unlikely friendship with a man she once loathed and finds herself falling into something she’s spent the last six years avoiding. Will she let her painful past stand in the way, or will she muster the strength to forgive herself and realize her full potential?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Lovely, Romantic, Sweet tale By iiiireader Instead of the simple romance that I expected, reading “Sweet Girl” by Rachel Hollis was more of a real life adventure with romance thrown in. I didn't realize that it was part of a series (“Party Girl” was the first book and one that I will be reading very soon.)You don't need to have read the first book, but based on how well written “Sweet Girl” is done, I highly recommend reading both of the books – that way you will know more about the characters.First of all, the book is very funny. It is told a little tongue-in-cheek and I found myself smiling and laughing my way through it. However, it also deals with very serious issues and it does so in a very responsible way. There is nothing glib about the way these characters feel about things that matter. But just like I find in my life, laughing about little things helps one cope with the hard to imagine and live with serious things. The story is about Max Jennings, a 24 year old bartender who has had a lifelong dream of opening a bakery shop. Unfortunately, Max also has had a lifelong illness which has made this dream a little difficult to achieve. In addition, she had some life events which derailed her and she has not been able to right herself and get on with plans for her life.Max is roommates and best friends with Landon and Miko, who are partners in an event planning business. Landon was the primary character in this first book in this series and is now dating Max' step-brother Brody. These women are there for Max as she struggles to get herself together.Through an unusual twist of fate, Max is given the opportunity to learn pastry making from one of the world's most renowned pastry chefs. She grabs the chance and a lot of the most fun part of the story involves her work in this kitchen.Bennett Taylor (Taylor to his friends) is someone who simply rubs Max the wrong way. She purposely calls him Bennett to show him she is not his friend. Taylor has other ideas and offers his assistance to her as she struggles to get her pastry work refined outside of work.I really loved reading the book. It isn't often that I walk away from a book knowing that there wasn't a thing I would have changed if I had written it. This is one of the exceptional books where I felt everything was covered exactly as it should have been. All I can hope is that there will be more books in the series – maybe starting with Miko and Liam. I recommend the book to anyone who loves an excellent romantic comedy. It is a book for all ages as, while it deals with serious subjects, it is free from overt sexual situations.I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

You won't be disappointed By Carrie J This was my first Rachel Hollis book and I almost didn't read it.I downloaded it on Netgalley but then got cold feet the more I thought about it. I was worried it would be too sweet for me. I deleted it.But then I started following Rachel's website TheChicSite.com. Surely, if I liked this website I would like her writing. But what if this is a case of a fan that should leave writing to professionals? Finally, I decided on a whim this weekend to re-download it. I had read a review that intrigued me. This review stated that Sweet Girl was not a romance or new adult but woman's literature, pure and simple. So I sat down and decided to give it a try.Let me first say that Rachel is an amazing writer and I can't believe this is only her second book (I don't really count the novella). How could she not have been a writer her whole life??? For the first time in a long time I found myself slowing down and really absorbing the words on the page. I needed that. I've been reading too fast lately and not really feeling the words. Rachel definitely has a way with words. The characters were so three dimensional that I could appreciate their uniqueness and relate to them. The main character, Max, wants to be a pastry chef but is stuck in job as a bartender. On a side note, it was obvious that Rachel knows quite a bit about both professions (or at least did her homework) and was able to create realistic situations. Max is perpetually in a bad mood and doesn't open up to those around her. This means nobody in Max's life knows her secret dream.I can understand know why one reviewer was so adamant that this is woman's literature. Sweet Girl is about growing up and facing your problems. It's about learning who you are. It's about rising to the challenge. There is a dash of romance but this is mostly about Max's story, as it should be.***ARC provided by Lake Union Publishing via Netgalley***

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. negative and closed off person that I didn't like her as a character at first By Lauren H. (Obsessive Book Nerd) To start, I have to say that I had a hard time connecting to Max for the first several chapters. She was such a tough, negative and closed off person that I didn't like her as a character at first. She was frustrating with how rude and negative she could be. But I really liked the other characters from Party Girl, so I knew I needed to keep reading.I also really enjoyed the baking and foodie part of the story, so it was easy to continue reading. I also want to know, the love story part of Sweet Girl was a lot more prominent then in Party Girl, even though it wasn't the main focus. It was obvious that Max was hiding something from her past, but we don't find out what, until close to the end. By that point, I decided I did like Max and that I couldn't stop reading. This book turned into one of those up until 2 am books because I couldn't stop reading until I finished the book.To read more reviews like this one, check out my site, www.ObsessiveBookNerd.com

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. from an era when writing was the dominant media By Brian L Mitchell I hadn't read O.Henry since high school and came across a couple of his books at a sale. Sixes and Sevens is a group of unrelated short stories written from around 1904 through 1907, they are easy reads and very entertaining. I believe writing back in those days was much more an art form than what we produce today, possibly because it was such a dominant media back then people cared more and demanded more. Take time to look back at these early 20th century works and you'll see as I have, the only constant in our world are the people in it, despite all our technological innovation, we haven't changed at all

An Epic Novel Based on the Biblical story of Daniel

Based on the Biblical story of Daniel, A MAN MUCH LOVED is the third installment of the bestselling historical novel, THE CHOSEN, by Shlomo Kalo, one of the most prolific writers in Israel and a nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

At the start of A MAN MUCH LOVED, Nebuchadnezzar’s army, after a long siege, takes Jerusalem again, this time destroying the Temple and much of the city. Daniel later learns his family has been killed, as well. He retains his powers as advisor in Babylon, bringing dream reading and counselling to Nebuchadnezzar himself. After Nebuchadnezzar dies, however, his weak son takes the throne and the situation deteriorates. Among the many trials he faces, Daniel passes a test in the den of lions.

In a dramatic climax, the visions Daniel sees are explained to him. One of the prophecies of a new day for Jerusalem comes to pass, and his and his people's exile draws near to its end.

THE CHOSEN: A Man Much Loved: Historical Fiction (The Chosen Trilogy Book 3), by Shlomo Kalo

Review "...I received a book as a present. It was Shlomo Kalo's 'The Chosen'. I read this master-piece just as slowly as I could, hoping I would never finish it. The book which is based on the Biblical book of Daniel deals with love: A love of a human being to another human being, of a man to a woman and mainly, with the love of God who is Love". Yimna Galore, Maariv newspaper, Israel. "It is indeed an epic-like novel filled with drama and passion. Mr. Kalo weaves together the political, personal and spiritual with great skill." G. Glijansky, HarperCollins, US "A very impressive novel, both in terms of the writing and the subject-matter." Juliette Mitchell, Penguin UK. "...well written and extremely engaging." K. Shumate, Harvest House, US.

From the Back Cover An extraordinary novel with its vivid descriptions, unique linguistic style and unconventional approach to its theme - the theme of love. Based on the Biblical story of Daniel, it is a living epic, full of drama and fascination, with characters, relationships, places and events - transcending definition and transcending time.

Can love between man and women be so noble, so uplifting and down to the depth of souls? You will have to go through it to realize the magnitude of this possibility.Highly recommended.

My conclusions about The Chosen series By Joseph Katz My conclusion after reading all the book, is that except for it being so fascinating and inspiring, you can learn from it what is a true friendship, true love, and what you need in order to cope the difficulties of life, and overcome them.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful read. Inspiring and uplifting. By Amit Levy How on earth..? How on earth do you go into the lions den and come out alive? How do you walk out of a furnace, unharmed? How in God's name, our elder brother Daniel, did you manage to stay calm, peaceful and full of joy, in the midst of severe trials, a menacing uncertain future? Well, he says, a secret it is not.Reading this extraordinary book, the reader feels he is right there, with prophet Daniel and his close and saintly companions. Yet it doesn't feel like ancient history. As the preface says: "touches on the present" "foretells the future".And indeed, to a reader from a land (Israel) continuously threatened by fanatic enemies and a planet resembling a madhouse, this book is uplifting and encouraging. It shows the spirit of prophet Daniel, his heart, which is peaceful, loving and full of joy, in the midst of chaos.Did you know the author was nominated for the Nobel literature prize? Didn't surprise me.The complete book is quite long, yet feels too short. It revolves around a prophet, yet - no theology, no religion, no philosophy. How refreshing!Highly recommended.

36 of 41 people found the following review helpful. and every time you have a lull it the torment and think well maybe things will be better now, read it again By Providence I received an AVR of “Say Goodbye to Crazy” partly due to my personal experience with “crazy”. After reading in full, I can say with confidence, the only thing I would change about this book is the publication date. What a difference this book could have made for my husband and I 15 years ago. Instead we navigated the crazy waters with the, well intended, but ultimately impotent guidance of friends and family who had no idea what we were up against. While even the most amicable divorces are emotionally charged and have some degree of animosity… If you find that your situation has become toxic and abusive, read this book and when you finish read it again, and every time you have a lull in the torment and think well maybe things will be better now, read it again. Thank you Dr. Palmatier for your no holds barred contribution to a subject few are willing to take on....women can be the abuser.

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Yes it happens to some awesome guys. After icing down some bruises and saying ... By Jared Sanchez So I made a mistake of shacking up with Crazy. Yes it happens to some awesome guys. After icing down some bruises and saying some affirmations in the mirror. I pulled the trigger and bought this book.A few things you should know:1.This book is written primarily for the new partner of a guy out of an abusive relationship. Ignore those references, and still read this even if you haven't left crazy.. I moved out and this gave me a definitive direction to go.2.This isn't a magic fix or a total win. But when you've hit bottom there's nowhere to go but up and forward. The concepts are a bit brutal. And you really have to redefine what a win is.3. Supplement this book with a professional counselor or some sort of support system. The book goes over questions to ask your prospective therapist. Or talk to someone you trust.I would recommend this book and share it with family members and friends. It's a very valuable tool.

Dealing with Crazy in a more strategic way per suggestions in this book are (mostly) working like a charm. We finally said "NO" to Crazy!! Big thank you to the authors.

What could be better? Please, Ms. Castle, hurry and write the rest. I'm impatient already! :)--There is kissing, but no graphic sexual content--There is "cursing," but nothing offensive to a clean reader.--Some violence--Grammatical errors are prevalent (missing words, misplaced commas, etc), which will drive you crazy if you are a perfectionist. But the story and characters are so good, I can easily overlook this.

The only bone I have to pick is that it isn't the last book! The next one is supposed to come out sometime early 2016. Wonderful allegory that retells the story of God's love and forgiveness through his son. Though the words "God" and "Jesus" aren't used. Good writing, great fantasy with all the quirky characters including some beasts and creatures, and well rounded characters. No sexual content or swearing. There is romance and there is violence. Epic story of good versus evil. I give it five stars, loved it, and can recommend for ages teens and up (and any fantasy love, you do not have to be a Christian to enjoy this book!) While I am waiting for book five, I see the author has written a few "stories" about the White Road, so....

I love how she shows so well that God has a plan for our life and we continually mess up but he never stops loving us and no matter what we do He is right there waiting for us to turn back to Him. Also the factor that when we mess up He is able to make something good happen out of it. Only God can take something we thought we ruined and make something beautiful from it. I couldn't put it down, from the moment I started to the turn of the last page I was completely intrigued.

Lyme disease can cause puzzling symptoms in children, including pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal upsets, learning disabilities, behavioral issues and psychiatric problems. The illness can be hard to diagnose, however, and Lyme-related controversies in the medical world complicate the picture. Parents seeking help for their suffering children often don't know where to turn. .When Your Child Has Lyme Disease: A Parent's Survival Guide is filled with information parents need to know about Lyme, as well as practical strategies based on the authors' personal and professional experiences. It offers guidance on finding the right medical care, coping with treatment, developing effective boundaries with others who don't understand what your family is going through, advocating for your child's educational needs and managing day-to-day family life. .Connecticut psychotherapist Sandra K. Berenbaum has counseled Lyme patients and their families for over 20 years. Co-author Dorothy Kupcha Leland, is a parent and national activist who writes the blog Touched by Lyme.  Foreword by Richard Horowitz MD, author of Why Can't I Get Better? When Your Child Has Lyme Disease: A Parent's Survival Guide, by Sandra K Berenbaum, Dorothy Kupcha Leland

Review "I wish I'd had this smart, fearless, insightful handbook on my own journey through the Lyme thicket.  From negotiating with schools to handling doctors and relatives to tending a sick child's physical and psychic pain, Sandra K. Berenbaum and Dorothy Kupcha Leland have covered it all in When Your Child Has Lyme Disease: A Parent's Survival Guide. The best advice ever -your copy of this book will end up dog-eared with highlights and margin notes, and you'll carry it everywhere."Pamela WeintraubAuthor, Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic"An invaluable resource.... This remarkable book is both a practical guide and emotional touchstone....If you have a child with Lyme, no matter where you and your family are on this journey, this guide can help." John McCormick, The Huffington Post "The book opens with the authors' experiences with Lyme Disease: a mother seeking a diagnosis and a therapist stricken with Bell's Palsy, a well-known Lyme calling card. The chapters continue to blend the authors' different perspectives, weaving a narrative applicable to anyone touched by the disease. While personal, the book contains myriad facts and a top-down view of the disease and its current impact in the US. Because of professional dogmatism, poor detection, and even financial interests, Lyme Disease remains an ailment confined to the shadows, making sufferers (especially parents) reliant on social support as much as medical protocol. In this way, the title complements the growing online communities of afflicted and affected people. Sections tackle everything from diet and exercise to mitigating the disease's impact on a child's social well-being. It effectively straddles the de facto faith in mainstream medicine and the often more personal and intuitive insights of alternative medicine." US Review of Books "A Roadmap for mothers and fathers, giving practical strategies for parenting a child with Lyme." Dr. Richard Horowitz.

About the Author For over 20 years, Sandra Berenbaum's psychotherapy practice has focused exclusively on Lyme disease patients and their families. She has developed responsive psychotherapy, an approach geared to the specific needs of families coping with tick-borne illness. Her presentations at both national and regional conferences have helped educate practitioners about how to work with patients who have Lyme disease. Dorothy Kupcha Leland has a professional background in journalism, politics and book publishing. After her daughter became seriously disabled by Lyme disease in 2005, she became active with the national advocacy group LymeDisease.org. She now serves as its vice-president and writes the blog "Touched by Lyme."

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Useful for parents By Eliza Graham Finally!! A guide to help parents of children with Lyme disease! This book walks you through what it’s like to have a child with Lyme. It touches on just about every problem that might arise, from issues with your school district to ones with your extended family members. This book is co-authored by a psychotherapist who works with families affected by Lyme, and part of her job is going to school meetings to advocate for the sick child. I didn’t even know that was a thing! I have a whole notepad full of information from this book. Very useful.

I've been a single parent of a child who has been suffering for over 4 years. We have seen countless specialists and doctors and have only recently come to find that my daughter has been suffering from Lyme Disease. It has taken over her life and mine and has taken every minute of my time and every ounce of my strength to work through this. I wish I had read this book years ago. I'd recommend this to any parent struggling through this horrible disease with their child.

The only book of its kind By Robert Bransfield This is the only book if its kind and is a very comprehensive and accurate resource for parents who have children with Lyme and associated tick-borne diseases. These infections in children need much greater attention and parents need a broad base of information in order to make informed decisions. I thank the authors for making such a contribution!Robert Bransfield MD, DLFAPA

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. reviewed by redz world reviews By Tina Brunelle (Redz) Dev’s Wolf by author Angelique Voisen is the eight book in the Wolves of New Haven series. This is my first time reading this series. I did not feel lost. I did feel this book was a bit short though. I wished I knew more about the pack, and more about the dynamics of it. So perhaps if you start with the first book, you won’t have that feeling that I do.I also feel this story is very rushed. There is a ton of things inside this short story. MM, Werewolf is my favorite genre. I love the concepts in this book. I like that Toby is not a pretty boy, he is flawed. He thinks he is overweight, and he doubts his own value. Lucky though this shy nerdy guy has a true love that thinks he is just amazing.Dev I really felt the information about him was dumped on me rather than shown. It was like here is his back ground, now let’s go forward now. Again perhaps reading the series from the start helps this, but if this is truly Dev’s love story then I feel it really should be his and more fleshed out than this story was.The chemistry is amazing between Toby and Dev. There is a lot of story in this short book, and if it had been longer I really would have loved it more. As it is it is a good story with sizzling chemistry. I would like to explore more in this world. Hopefully some of the holes will be filled in as we go along. Four twinkling Stars

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Writing By Barb Pond I have read this entire series and I have enjoyed each and every one of these books. But in my opinion I like this one the very best. Each one has to do with two wolves finding their soul mate and this one isn't any different. This one is about Dev and Toby relationship and all about how they meet and a few things that provoke the jealousy monster. I love the feeling that this book really brought forth different emotions in me.I hope this isn't the last one of this the last book I read from this author.. While reading her books, there is always a smile on my face because I know that even though her characters go through some tough things, no one gives up on the hope of finding their true love.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dev's Wolf By Christy Duke I'm a big fan of this author's world in the 'Wolves of New Haven' series, and especially of the submissive, slightly chubby, unmated characters who all seem to believe that if they stick to this new diet, then they too will find their hunk of a mate. *grins* Why shouldn't Toby believe it? He's seen it happen. Heck, his close friend Sal just mated with one of the notorious Walker brothers. And Toby sure likes eyeing Dev Walker.Toby is stunned when Dev asks him out, but then he believes it to be a joke when Dev stands him up. Furiously Toby goes to Sal and Kal's apartment, only to have Kal let Toby and Sal know that the Walker brothers’ mother, Nancy, is in town. The same woman who abused and neglected them their whole lives. But Kal can't believe it's her, because he and Van found information proving she overdosed years ago. A little fact they didn't bother to tell their baby brother. The brother who took Nancy leaving the hardest. With Toby, Sal, Van, Kal, and Reed riding to help Dev, it doesn't take them long to vanquish their old enemy. And, since Dev got injured pretty badly, it's up to Toby and his wolf to accept the mating and bring their man and wolf back from the brink. It was exciting, I tell you.I had a lot of fun with this installment as I adored Toby and his attitude. Dev was a typical dominant, sexy wolf, who got hit over the head by the amazingness of his mate! A sweet, sexy, fun read.NOTE: This book was provided by Evernight Publishing for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews

These books are perfect for farm families, with little boys and girls who can relate to the farming world. Even if your children do not live on a farm, the author gives a very good and realistic glimpse into the world of 'country living'. The illustrations are detailed and bright, keeping my children's attention. The story lines are always entertaining and we have loved every Tractor Mac addition to our book collection. We've even taken our Tractor Mac infatuation a step further and bought my son a Tractor Mac hat, which he absolutely loves and wears every day. Great job Billy Steers! Keep them coming! There's a family in Illinois who are big fans!

Set in Thomas McGuane's accustomed Big Sky country, with its mesmeric powers, these stories attest to the generous compass of his fellow feeling, as well as to his unique way with words and the comic genius that has inspired comparison with Twain and Gogol. The ties of family make for uncomfortable binds: A devoted son is horrified to discover his mother's antics before she slipped into dementia. A father's outdoor skills are no match for an ominous change in the weather. But complications arise equally in the absence of blood, as when lifelong friends on a fishing trip finally confront their deep dislike for each other. Or when a gifted traveling cattle breeder succumbs to the lure of a stranger's offer of easy money. McGuane is as witty and large-hearted as we have ever known him-a jubilant, thunderous confirmation of his status as a modern master.

In the hardwood forest, a shallow swamp immersed the trunks and roots of the trees near the lake. Owen and Ben hunted turtles among the waterweeds and pale aquatic flowers. The turtles sunned themselves on low branches hanging over the water, in shafts of light spotted with dancing dragonflies. Ever alert, the creatures tumbled into the swamp at the first sound, as though wiped from the branches by an unseen hand. The wild surroundings made Ben exuberant. He bent saplings to watch them recoil or shinnied up trees, and he returned home carrying things that interested him—strands of waterweed, bleached muskrat skulls, or the jack-in-the-pulpits he brought to his mother to fend off her irritation at having to wash another load of muddy clothes. Once, Owen caught two of the less-vigilant turtles, the size of fifty-cent pieces, with poignant little feet constantly trying to get somewhere that only they knew. Owen loved their tiny perfection, the flexible undersides of their shells, the ridges down their topside that he could detect with his thumbnail. Their necks were striped yellow, and they stretched them upward in their striving. Owen made a false bottom for his lunch box with ventilation holes so that he could always have them with him, despite the rule against taking pets to school or on the school bus. He fed them flies from a bottle cap. Only Ben knew where they were.

One afternoon, Owen came back from the swamp to find the flashing beacon of the town’s fire truck illuminating the faces of curious neighbors outside his house. He ran up the short length of his driveway in time to see his mother addressing a small crowd as she stood beside two firemen in obsolete leather helmets with brass eagles fixed to their fronts. She looked slightly disheveled in a housedress and golf-club windbreaker, and she spoke in the lofty voice she used when she had been drinking, the one meant to fend off all questions: “Let he who has never had a kitchen grease fire cast the first stone!” She laughed. “Blame the television. Watching The Guiding Light. Mea culpa. A soufflé.” Owen felt the complete bafflement of the neighborhood as he listened. Then her tone flattened. “Look, the fire’s gone. Good night, one and all.”

Owen’s father’s car nosed up to the group. His father jumped out, tie loosened, radiating authority. He pushed straight through to the firefighters without glancing at his wife. “Handled?” The shorter of the two nodded quickly. His father spoke to the neighbors: “Looks like not much. I’ll get the details, I’m sure.” Most had wandered off toward their own homes by then, the  Kershaws among the last to go. Owen’s father turned to his wife, who was staring listlessly at the ground, placed his broad hand on the small of her back, and moved her through the front door, which he closed behind him, leaving Owen alone in the yard.

When Owen went in, his parents were sitting at opposite sides of the kitchen table, the Free Press spread out in front of them. The brown plastic Philco murmured a Van Patrick interview with Birdie Tebbetts: it was the seventh-inning stretch in the Indians game. Owen’s father motioned to him to have a seat, which he did while trying to get the drift of the interview. His mother didn’t look up, except to access the flip lid on her silver ashtray. She held a Parliament between her thumb and middle finger, delicately tapping the ash free with her forefinger. His father flicked the ash from his Old Gold with his thumbnail at the butt of the cigarette and made no particular effort to see that it landed in the heavy glass ashtray by his wrist. Commenting on what he had just read, his father said, “Let’s blow ’em up before they blow us up!”

“Who’s this?” his mother said, but got no answer. Instead, she turned to Owen. “Your father and I are going to take a break from each other.”

            “Oh, yeah?”

“We thought you’d want to know.”

            “Sure.”

His father lifted his head to glance at Owen, then returned to the paper. Owen knew better than to say a single word, unless it was about the weather. He wanted his parents to be distracted, so that he could fit in more baseball and get any kind of haircut he liked, but he worried about things falling apart entirely. He was unable to picture what might lie beyond that. School, of course, out there like a black cloud.

His mother said, “Ma said she’d take me in.”

At this, his father raised his head from the paper. “For God’s sake, Alice, no one is ‘taking you in.’ You’re not homeless.”

“Why don’t you go someplace, and I’ll stay here? Maybe someone will take you in.”

“I’ll tell you why: I’ve got a business to run.” His business, which dispatched plumbers and electricians to emergencies, was called Don’t Get Mad, Get Egan and made the sort of living known as decent. With tradesmen on retainer, he worked from an office, a hole-in-the-wall above a florist’s shop. An answering service gave the impression that it was a bigger operation than it was.

            “Ma will think you’ve failed.”

“Well, you tell Ma I haven’t failed.”

            “No, you tell her, sport.”

“I’m not calling your mother to tell her that I haven’t failed. That doesn’t make sense. Owen, where have you been? You look like you’ve been in the swamp.”

            “I’ve been in the swamp.”

“Would you like to add anything to that?”

            “No.”

His mother stubbed out her cigarette and said, “I think you owe your father a more complete answer, young man.”

“It’s nothing more than a little old swamp,” Owen said. “Mind turning that up? It’s the top of the eighth.”

Nobody was going anywhere except back to the newspaper.

Jones III A fellow Amazon reviewer introduced me to Thomas McGuane, in a Nebraska bookstore of all places, by placing Gallatin Canyon (Vintage Contemporaries) in my hands, which I read and reviewed a couple of years ago. I was suitably impressed, so when this offering popped up on my Vine listing, I had to say: Yes. And now I am even more impressed. Like fine wine and women, McGuane is improving with age."Crow Fair" is the title to one of the 17 short stories in this book. Though all the stories seem to be set in Montana, that seems to be the only common link. McGaune's range is both wide and deep, in terms of character types as well as their experiences. There are astronomers, used car dealers, old cowboys, con artists, drug dealers, orthodontists, bankers, out-back guides, prisoners and dementia patients. There are numerous depictions of dysfunctional families. There are tragic outcomes, and others that are near misses. McGaune stories are not for skimming. A whole decade can meaningfully pass in a single paragraph; a key turn in the plot conveyed in a single sentence. For several years I have been enthralled by the short stories of the Canadian author Alice Munro, who just won the Nobel Prize. McGuane's stories in this collection are all of such caliber. I could not find a single "clunker."The following are a few passages I marked from different stories: "As a tradesman...I had clearly fallen below the social class to which my father thought I should belong. He believed that the fine education he'd paid for should have led me to greater abstraction, but while it's true that the farther you get from an actual product the better your chances for economic success..." "They had acquired their land from my wife's grandfather and, with it, a belief in family values that did not stand up to scrutiny, since most ranches these days were the scene of bitter inheritance battles." "They were unironic enthusiasts for all the mass pleasures the culture offered: television, NASCAR, cruises, Disney World, sports, celebrity gossip and local politics. Szabo often wished that he could be as well-adjusted as Melinda's family, but he would have had to be medicated to pursue her list of pleasures."And several stories are definitely "edgy." Consider going to an isolated river campsite to fish, with a guide you begin to realize is crazy and unstable...and armed. Or dealing with your once prim-and-proper mother who has dementia, and is in the nursing home, and hear her relates rather graphically an affair of her youth. One brother claims she might be making it all up. The other retorts that with dementia, you can't make it up!Thomas McGuane is a master story teller. Included in several stories are insights into the human conditions that resonated with some of my own experiences and that I have rarely seen addressed in print. Like Munro, he has many other collections of stories in print - this book listed 15 others, so I am certain that I'll be reading more tales, from the Great North, in the American West. 6-stars.

Beautiful work of literary fiction By knittingmom Crow Fair by Thomas McGuane is a work of beautifully written literary works of short fiction, each story is set in Big Sky country, and yet while family and friendships appears to be the central theme, each story, there are seventeen in all, are quite different and yet all the stories draw the reader into the messed up lives of the characters, yet their flaws make them even more human and readily accessible to the reader. It is not often I read a collection of short stories I care to share with others, in hopes they too will pick up the collection, but Crow Fair is one of the exceptions. McGuane sense of humanity, tragedy, and wit make for an exceptional collection of short stories that fully engage the reader and often times make the reader pause and reflect. Several of the short stories stayed with me and I caught myself thinking of them long after I had finished the book. I look forward to reading more works my McGuane; he is truly a master of literary prose.

By Blue in Washington These 17 short stories are definitely up to author McGuane's high standards for clear writing, finely tuned observation of human behavior and unexpected interactions. In the latter category, many of these pieces are surprisingly, shockingly, hilariously chockful of what-the-f....? moments that you might not see coming (I didn't in most of them). It had me wondering at the author's subtle and graceful manner in flinging elegant hand grenades.McGuane has set most, if not all, of his stories in Montana, but geography is not a major factor here. It's mostly about people behaving predictably or unpredictably--mis-communicating badly or being clueless as to what is happening around them. Somehow, most of this happens without much drama, but almost always with some kind amusement for the reader.I really loved these stories and recommend them to others.
