By LT Being a fan of Peretti and Dekker for years now, I am always on the lookout for Faith-based fiction that pushes beyond traditional genres into the realm of mystery, suspense and the supernatural. From the first page of Crossing into the Mystic I felt myself drawn into Grace McKenna’s sometimes dark world of “Subtle vision” and I was hooked! The first book left me fretting over the plight of our heroine so when the opportunity arose; I practically jumped at the chance to be one of the first to read Edging into the Underground. Having waited almost a year for the next book in the series, I am pleased to say that D.L. Koontz does not disappoint with the sequel! I found Edging Through the Underground as much of an absorbing and fast paced read as its predecessor. I was pulled even deeper into Grace’s world of ghosts, angels and demons. Some of my questions were answered, a few more presented themselves along the way and I find myself salivating for the next in the series! Great Job D.L Koontz! Edging Through the Underground is everything you want in a good book: page turning suspense, a brave and stubborn heroine and a plot line that leaves you guessing until the end then wanting more! Do yourself a favor: snuggle up with this book on a cold night but make sure all the lights are on!L. Thornhill Crane author of Come to Me Like Rain and Tied to the Draw

I've been anxiously awaiting the continuation of Grace's story and was thrilled to get my hands on Edging Through the Darkness. As in the first book of the series, Crossing Into the Mystic, DL Koontz takes us into the past, the present, and the unknown with lush description and elegant prose. I occasionally found myself re-reading paragraphs just to relish the beauty of the words. I couldn't do that often, though, because each chapter had me anxiously turning the pages to see what would happen next. I never give spoilers in my reviews, but I will say that the twist at the end had me slamming the book closed in shock! Then I had to go back and re-read several key passages, wondering how I'd missed it. Then I had to go on a search to find out how long I would have to wait for the third book. Read this series. You will not be disappointed.

With both William and Clay gone, Grace finds herself facing a growing evilness in the mansion she inherited from her stepfather. As she seeks to help souls with her “subtle vision,” she finds herself deeper in mysteries surrounding her house and in danger from evil spirits that still wander the earth.DL Koontz takes a controversial subject and expertly weaves a tale of suspense. Her telling of a “ghost” story while infusing the story with faith and truth is expertly done. Edging through the Darkness is an engaging and gripping read. This book will leave you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the third book.

Making Money, by Terry Pratchett

From Publishers Weekly Reprieved confidence trickster Moist von Lipwig, who reorganized the Ankh-Morpork Post Office in 2004's Going Postal, turns his attention to the Royal Mint in this splendid Discworld adventure. It seems that the aristocratic families who run the mint are running it into the ground, and benevolent despot Lord Vetinari thinks Moist can do better. Despite his fondness for money, Moist doesn't want the job, but since he has recently become the guardian of the mint's majority shareholder (an elderly terrier) and snubbing Vetinari's offer would activate an Assassins Guild contract, he reluctantly accepts. Pratchett throws in a mad scientist with a working economic model, disappearing gold reserves and an army of golems, once more using the Disc as an educational and entertaining mirror of human squabbles and flaws (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Moist von Lipwig, the savior of the Ankh-Morpork post office, has gotten settled into a routine. He's filling out forms, signing things, will probably get to be head of the Merchants Association next year, and he hasn't designed a stamp in months. He's so bored, in fact, that he's taken to climbing the walls of the post office and breaking into his own office. Lord Vetinari, always brilliant in his ruthlessness, recognizes an opportunity when he sees one, and offers Moist the job of running the royal mint. Moist tries to refuse, pretending that he's satisfied with the stable life, but he can't deny the urge for adventure and intrigue for long. The mint is, in the finest Ankh-Morpork tradition, a strange and oddly old-fashioned place, with bizarre traditions so ingrained the long-term employees can't imagine doing them any other way. Moist is the perfect innovator, with his wildly creative solutions to problems, for changing the way the entire city thinks about money. In the transition from the gold standard and old money, Pratchett brings up all the details that make Ankh-Morpork one of the most satisfying contemporary fantasy cities and continues in his trend of beautifully crafted, wickedly cutting satire on the underpinnings of modern human society. Making Money is smart, funny, and a thoroughly entertaining read. Schroeder, Regina

A Bit Below Pratchett's Usual 5-Star Effort By ealovitt I'm a huge Discworld fan and enjoyed "Making Money," which is a continuation of "Going Postal," but I couldn't quite shake the feeling that Terry Pratchett wrote this latest installment on automatic, or else got a golem to write it for him. All of the right characters are included---some like Death in cameo roles, and others like Lord Vetinari, almost too visible (a little of Ankh-Morpork's Patrician goes a long way). It's got all of the right standing, falling, and knocking-people-down-with-ladders jokes, plus Punes, or plays on words. But for a Discworld novel, "Making Money" lacks Pratchett's usual shoot-from-the-hip-and-mouth-and-other-body-parts originality. Maybe Moist von Lipwig, former Postmaster General and current trouble-shooter at the Royal Mint, is too slight a character to have the weight of two Discworld novels resting on his shoulders. Maybe his antics at the Mint are too similar to his antics at the Post Office.Or maybe it's because I can't stand his girlfriend, Adora Belle---Gladys the Golem has a nicer personality. Heck, the villain, Cosmo Lavish has a nicer personality, which is another one of this book's problems. We don't have a villain we can really hate. I spent the last half of the novel worrying about whether Cosmo's thumb would fall off, not whether he would succeed in replacing the Patrician at Ankh-Morpork's grubby helm.I'll still grab Pratchett's next fantasy off of the shelf as soon as it appears, but the Moist von Lipwig books are definitely not up to his Night Watch-, Witch-, or Death-standard of Discworld novels.

Money for nothing and your clacks for free By Lonya It seems, after reading Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel "Making Money", that money does make the world go `round, even if that world is flat and balanced on the backs of four elephants standing on the back of a giant turtle. In "Making Money", Terry Pratchett and his `hero' Moist von Lipwig do for and to the monetary system exactly what they did for and to the post office in "Going Postal". The result is the same - - - - a Buster Keaton-like romp through the strange and wonderful world of Discworld. It is impossible to detail the plot of this book without giving away spoilers so I think it best just to say that Lord Vetinari has determined that Ankh-Morpork's monetary system is in dire straits and in need of improvement. Vetinari picks, in his inimitable way, Moist von Lipwig to lead the way. In essence, Moist is set-up by Vetinari to become Ankh-Morpork's Alan Greenspan. Unlike Greenspan, however, Moist must deal with a cast of characters that have no idea as to what Moist is up to or trying to achieve. (Well, maybe that isn't so unlike Greenspan!)."Making Money" feature a cast of old but mostly new characters. As to established characters, Vetinari is featured and his is as delightfully Machiavellian as ever. There are cameo appearances by DEATH, the Watch, and CMOT Dibbler. However, new or newer characters play the largest roles. Moist's second appearance is terrific. Pratchett does a very nice job turning him into what I hope is a regular role. Moist's girlfriend the chain-smoking Adore Belle Dearheart makes her presence felt. Mr. Bent, the oh-so serious bank manager plays straight man to Moist's light-hearted con-man character. Bent is tied to the old ways - where money must be based on gold and nothing but gold. There is something very William Jennings Bryan-like about Bent and his straight-laced approach is the perfect foil for Moist's extraordinarily flexible approach to monetary issues. Moist's antagonists are the Lavish family, Cosmo Lavish and his rather large sister Pucci (of whom Pratchett says in a great line, "she had no idea how to handle people and she tried to make self-esteem do the work of self-respect, but the girl could flounce better than a fat turkey on a trampoline".) They make good foils for Moist and Vetinari. As always the plot has many twists and turns and one-liners fly almost as fast as the slings and arrows of the Assassins' Guild. Pratchett has a great way with humor and manages to combine that humor with a good deal of insight into how `things' work in the real world. His look at the monetary system in "Making Money" can now stand with Pratchett's look at rock music Soul Music, religion Small Gods, the post office Going Postal, and movies Moving Pictures as some very funny looks at our world through the prism of Discworld."Making Money" was a fun book for me to read. It was typical Pratchett (high praise) and I think most Pratchett fans will enjoy it. I certainly did. L. Fleisig

DeWitt The Post Office is an easy target for a gifted satirist like Pratchett; macroeconomics are much harder. Pratchett manages to bring it all off, but overall "Making Money" ranks in the middle third of Pratchett's writing.Moist Von Lipwig, confidence man, trickster and Ankh Morpork's Postmaster, is bored. And when he is bored, he will take terrible chances. In many ways, it's how he feels alive. The tyrant of Ankh Morpork, the Patrician, Lord Vetinari, recognizes all this and manipulates people and circumstances so the Moist is made the head of the city's largest bank, with a goal of monetary reform. Well, not the actual chairman; the actual head of the bank is a small dog with a taste for toffee.Moist must cope with the old family shareholders - the completely dysfunctional Lavish clan - as well as entrenched staff, his checkered past coming back to haunt him and missing gold bullion. Moist copes better than Pratchett does. As a novel, "Making Money" is more episodic than was "Going Postal," and the conclusion is weaker. "Money" has its moments, and you will laugh out loud more than once. But as a story, it's just not as strong as, say, Pratchett's last half dozen. In particular, Pratchett doesn't pull all of the plot threads together with his usual skill. And it must be unbelievably difficult to make economics amusing. Moist's instructions from Lord Vetinari are to get the suspicious citizens of Ankh Morpork to accept paper currency, to free the City from the gold standard. On one level, it is nearly impossible to make it funny; on another, it is nearly impossible to satirize because its satirizes itself too effectively. Pratchett gets a nod just for making the attempt. The "dismal science," to use Carlyle's phrase, could use some humor. But even a below-average Pratchett novel is a treat, and "Money" is a delight. It's just not outstanding.

By Vicki No one can imagine what it is like to face the daunting and unknown journey of what it feels like to be told you have cancer, and not know all the obstacles you will face. Each person's journey is unique, but Deb Childs shares her story in a way that anyone facing a similar battle can glean knowledge and compassion from......she puts a face on a subject most want to ignore. She makes us remember that cancer is about the many people it takes from us....and the tragedy of how the disease has become a big business that is cold and lacking in humanity and dignity. Deb brings the subject back to where it belongs.......the story of a man, the love of her life....William. Thank you for sharing.

Perfect for fans of R. J. Palacio and Gordon Korman, this is the hilarious and heartwarming sequel to Elvis and the Underdogs from author Jenny Lee, former writer on the popular Disney Channel show Shake It Up.

It's been months since Benji's former safety dog, Elvis, was whisked away by the Secret Service, but Benji still misses him terribly. Luckily, because Elvis is now the president's dog, there are plenty of pictures and videos of him online.

While watching the footage of the president's speech on the White House lawn, Benji and his friends Alexander and Taisy see Elvis thumping his tail repeatedly. Is he trying to tell Benji something? The kids realize it's actually a code! And Elvis needs their help.

And so begins another madcap adventure in which these underdog best friends will have to find a way to travel to DC, find out the truth behind Elvis's distress signals, and uncover state secrets without getting caught . . . or they may have to say good-bye to Elvis for good.

Elvis and the Underdogs: Secrets, Secret Service, and Room Service, by Jenny Lee

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—It has been months since Benji Barnsworth watched the Secret Service drive away with Elvis, the 200-pound Newfoundland therapy dog originally intended for the president, but who was delivered to Benji by mistake. Ripley, his new therapy dog, is fine, but he doesn't talk. Benji misses Elvis, so he and friends Taisy and Alexander keep tabs on Elvis online. Benji notices that Elvis looks a bit strange during one presidential speech, and he realizes that Elvis is sending a coded message with his tail—he needs help. The group of friends must get to Washington, DC, and rescue Elvis. It's easy enough to suspend disbelief and embrace a talking dog. The idea of two erroneously-delivered therapy dogs is a stretch, but when one recipient is the President of the United States, credulity strains. Benji's winning voice and his madcap antics charmed in the first installment, but the sequel doesn't hold up as well and feels overly long. While it is unlikely that many middle-grade readers will be familiar with White House protocol and security measures, some may have a hard time buying the ease with which Benji and his pals not only get to DC, but gain access to the White House. The narrator is a sweet and earnest character, if a bit self-aware. The adults are little more than clueless props, while the action is over-the-top slapstick.—Brenda Kahn, Tenakill Middle School, Closter, NJ

From Booklist The buoyancy and belly laughs of Elvis and the Underdogs (2013) continue, as Benji and best buddies Alexander and Taisy contrive a trip to D.C. for a reunion with Elvis, a 200-pound talking (to Benji) Newfoundland currently living in the White House as First Dog. Once again Lee presents a diverse and vivid cast headlined by a physically frail motormouth and replete with characters who are capable of keeping up with him—led by his mother, a legendary baker who, as Benji notes with massive understatement, “can be a little melodramatic.” Ultimately, her delectable sweets earn an invitation to the White House kitchens, capped by a visit from the president himself. Larger-than-life emotions and rapid banter kick up an already headlong plot featuring a midnight rendezvous, a desperate scheme to prevent Elvis from being given to the prime minister of Japan, a wildly messy kitchen catastrophe, and a heartwarming, if highly improbable, closing twist. The author goes a little heavy on comforting slogans and life advice, but this rich, funny tale bears up easily under the load. Illustrations not seen. Grades 4-6. --John Peters

Although I didn't love this book as much as the first one, I still highly recommend it for all of those parents out there who have children, like mine, who are sensitive souls and don't like reading books with violence, death, sad, scary or mean stories and characters. I enjoyed reading this story out loud to my 10 year old son as much as he loved to hear it, and that is a rarity indeed!

By Melanie Jackson I got the first book for my daughter (who is 8) and I read it aloud on a car trip we took. It was so much fun that we HAD to get the second book as soon as we finished the first one. We were not disappointed in the least! We just finished reading this book and we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! It is fun to read, has fun twists in the plot and is very funny, even for adults! We LOVE ELVIS and the underdogs! My daughter wants the author to write another book so we can go on more adventures with Elvis, Benji and the underdogs!

Its a fast-paced story that doesn't just have the reader on the edge of their chair, but falling off of it quite often in laughter. Where certain parts are not for the faint of heart, the book offers a spectrum of romance to lust to bring the characters back into reality.Throughout this adventure, its mind boggling to remember this story is based in fact. It's like an episode of Law and Order: SVU. You can't believe things like this happen, but they do.A good read I didn't want to put down.

Claire's Story, 1910 (Secrets of the Manor), by Adele Whitby

About the Author Adele Whitby wishes she lived in a grand manor home with hidden rooms and tucked-away nooks and crannies, but instead she lives in the next best thing—a condo in Florida with her husband and their two dogs, Molly and Mack. When she’s not busy writing, you can usually find her reading and relaxing on the beach under a big umbrella. She loves getting lost in a good story, especially one set in a faraway place and time.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Claire’s Story, 1910 Come now, my dear Claire,” Cousin Colette said. “You must be exhausted from your journey. I’m sure you would appreciate some quiet time to rest in your new room.” I nodded my head in agreement, but to be honest, I didn’t feel a bit tired—not one bit! I was far too jumpy and jangly with anticipation, and what I really wanted to do was explore every inch of Rousseau Manor’s grand house and grounds. I wanted to spend hours getting to know my cousins Henri and Colette Rousseau, who would be my guardians from now on. Most of all, I wanted to do everything I could to make this unfamiliar place feel like home—and to make these strangers feel like family. The best way to do that, it seemed, was to do exactly what my new guardians asked of me. That’s why I didn’t resist when Cousin Colette and Cousin Henri led me past the receiving line of servants and through the entrance of Rousseau Manor. But I did turn my head around to peek behind me one more time. The girl near the end of the line was still standing there, watching me—Camille, she was called—and as soon as our eyes met, she smiled. I smiled back as I waved at her over my shoulder. We were almost the exact same height, which made me think Camille was nearly twelve years old, like me. She was the very first person my age I’d met since I had arrived in Paris. There was something about her—a spark of kindness, I think, or maybe it was the friendly way her face crinkled up when she smiled—that made me wish we could be friends. But Camille was a servant here, and I had no idea when I’d see her again. “This way, Claire.” Cousin Colette’s voice interrupted my thoughts. I hurried to catch up, pausing for only a minute to marvel at the grand entryway of Rousseau Manor, where gold trim made the walls and ceiling gleam. I wished I could’ve stopped to stare at everything—Rousseau Manor was even grander than I had imagined it would be. “Wait,” I said suddenly. “Where are my trunks?” “Ah, of course,” Cousin Colette replied. “After you’ve rested, I’ll have the footmen bring them up. We will hire a lady’s maid for you in due course, but Henri and I thought you should have a say in whom we choose. So until then our head housemaid, Bernadette, will attend to you. I’ll see to it that she unpacks your trunk and organizes your belongings while we dine.” “No!” I said suddenly. I didn’t want to be disagreeable, but . . . Cousin Colette looked at me in surprise. I took a deep breath and tried again. “If it’s not too much inconvenience, I’d like to unpack myself—as soon as possible.” “Yes, of course, my dear,” Cousin Colette said. “Whatever you desire.” She stepped over to the butler for a brief word and then returned to my side. “We’ve chosen a room on the second floor of the East Wing for you,” she said as we climbed the spiral staircase. “I hope that you’ll find the room suitable. With the eastern exposure, you’ll have a lovely view of the sunrise each morning. Of course, you may not be an early riser, but I can assure you the curtains are velvet and very thick; they’ll be sure to block out the light. And if there is anything about the decor you’d like to change, you need only say the word. . . .” Cousin Colette’s voice trailed off as she reached out to open the door. I caught a quick glimpse of a canopy bed with billowing white curtains, blue velvet drapes, and a plush rug to match, but I didn’t need to see my new room to express my gratitude. “It’s perfect,” I said. “Thank you.” A relieved smile washed over Cousin Colette’s face, and for the first time I wondered if she felt as nervous as I did. She squeezed my hand as the footmen arrived, bearing my trunks. “Where would you like them, Mademoiselle Claire?” the taller one asked. “Oh, anywhere is fine,” I said. “Perhaps by the window?” It had a deep window seat that was crowded with velvet pillows; I could already tell that I would spend many happy hours there, basking in the morning sun as I read my favorite books. “You mustn’t worry about the unpacking,” Cousin Henri said. “The entire staff here is at your service and will be more than happy to assist you in any way they can.” “Thank you,” I repeated. Perhaps I should’ve told them that unpacking as quickly as possible was all part of my plan to make Rousseau Manor feel like home. But I didn’t quite know how to say it, so we stood together in an uncomfortable silence, the way strangers might stand together on the platform as they await the next train. Suddenly, Cousin Colette leaned forward to embrace me. “We are so glad you have come to Rousseau Manor,” she whispered near my ear, “though we wish it had happened under different circumstances.” Tears pricked at my eyes then, but I tried to blink them away. There would be no melancholy or weepy moments for me. No, I would be happy and cheerful and a joy to have at Rousseau Manor. That was the vow I had made on the voyage from America. After all, that’s what Mother and Father would’ve wanted me to do. But were those tears shining in Cousin Colette’s eyes as well? I knew what it looked like when adults were trying not to cry in front of me. I’d seen it quite a bit in the last few weeks. “We’ll send Bernadette in later on to help you dress for dinner,” she finished. Cousin Henri smiled winningly at me before he escorted Cousin Colette from the room. And then I was all alone for perhaps the first time since the accident that had killed my parents and left me an orphan. Since that terrible night, everyone had been so tremendously kind to me . . . and the people of Rousseau Manor were no exception. I went straight to my trunk and unlatched the strong brass buckles. I didn’t even notice how anxious I was until I eased open the lid, waiting to see if the precious contents had survived the rough crossing overseas. My hands were trembling a bit as I unwrapped the bundles—the big one first. I opened the sturdy case and breathed a sigh of relief to discover that Father’s beautiful violin was in perfect condition, looking just as it had the very last time he had played for me. The polished wood gleamed in a beam of sunlight as I lightly rested my fingers on the taut strings. After I unpacked the bow, perhaps I could play a little. If I closed my eyes, it might even feel as if Father was playing for me once more. I reached for the second bundle, which was much smaller and lighter. Inside the silk handkerchief, I found them: Mother’s favorite pair of gloves and a small cameo brooch that she always wore pinned to the front of her dress. I slipped my hands into the gloves, knowing that hers were the last hands to wear them. They even smelled like her delicate perfume. A wide smile filled my face; anywhere would feel like home with these special reminders of Mother and Father by my side. I reached into the trunk for Father’s bow and found something surprising instead: A letter. I don’t remember any letters in here when the maids helped me pack my trunk, I thought as a confused frown spread across my face. But sure enough, my name was written on the front in perfect, elegant script. I opened the envelope and began to read. Dear Claire, As I write this letter on the eve of your departure, there is much hope swirling through my heart: that you will have a pleasant journey; that you will find France to be as wonderful and welcoming as I have during my visits; that you will feel quite at home the moment you arrive at Rousseau Manor; and, most of all, that the grief you feel for your parents will be replaced by only the sweetest memories of them. You know, of course, that your mother was a dear friend, and her untimely passing is a great injustice that no one who loved her should have to bear. And yet I have found that your presence here at Vandermeer Manor has done wonders to soothe my grief. It is a testament to your character, Claire, that even in the face of such tragedy, you are compassionate and kind. More than once I have observed you at play with Kate and little Alfie and thought about how proud your parents would be of your strength and resiliency. Knowing this, I am confident that you will find a warm welcome at Rousseau Manor and soon feel very much at home there. I met Henri and Colette many years ago and found them to be a charming couple with generous, giving hearts. And when you find yourself on American shores once more, I do hope you will visit us here at Vandermeer Manor. We will always have a room ready for you, and I look forward to seeing your sweet face at my table once more. With my fondest regards, Mrs. Katherine Vandermeer I read the letter twice more before I finally returned it to its envelope. It was just like dear, sweet Mrs. Vandermeer, Kate and Alfie’s great-grandmother, to write something so kind and heartening, then slip it into my trunk so that I should discover it right when I might need some reassurance! Reading her words made me wish, for the briefest moment, that I was still at Vandermeer Manor, listening to Kate practice her reading or helping Alfie arrange his toy soldiers. A wave of homesickness washed over me as I sat beside my trunk, all alone in a strange land. A sudden knock at the door interrupted my thoughts. “Come in,” I said, scrambling to my feet as I hurried to take off Mother’s gloves. I’d thought it would be Cousin Colette, or perhaps a housemaid to help me unpack, but instead it was the girl I’d met in the receiving line. Camille. “Pardon the interruption, Mademoiselle Claire,” she said right away, ducking into a curtsy as she balanced a heavy tray, “but we thought that you might be in need of some refreshments.” “What’s this?” I cried as I hurried across the room. The tray was so laden with treats that I marveled at Camille’s ability to carry it, let alone curtsy without spilling a single thing. There were slices of crusty bread and a wedge of creamy cheese; a basket filled to the brim with cookies; a platter of pastries; a bowl of chocolate-covered strawberries; and a tall glass of milk. There was even a vase with a large, fragrant white flower. “How beautiful!” I gasped as I leaned down to sniff it. I didn’t remember the name of the flower, but its scent reminded me of Mother. She’d grown flowers like this in one of our gardens. “Where did you get this?” I asked Camille, hardly daring to hope that other flowers like this one might grow somewhere on the grounds of Rousseau Manor. “It comes from the flower garden,” she told me. “Tomorrow, if you’d like, I would be happy to give you a tour of the house and grounds.” “Would you really?” I asked in excitement. “That would be wonderful. Thank you!” “It would be my pleasure, Mademoiselle Claire. I will come to your room after breakfast.” “Please, you really must call me Claire,” I told her. Camille looked a bit worried. “Are you—are you sure?” she asked. “It seems so informal . . . disrespectful, almost. . . .” “Nonsense!” I replied. Then, impulsively, I gestured toward the window seat. “Come. You must join me. I can’t eat all of this by myself!” Camille glanced over her shoulder. “I should get back,” she said. But when Camille looked at me again, something in her face changed. “But perhaps I can spare a few minutes.” I closed the lid of my trunk so that it became a table for us. “What should I try first?” I asked. Camille looked at the tray thoughtfully. “Well, these are my favorites,” she said, pointing at a puffed-up ball of pastry with a thin glaze of chocolate on top. “They’re called profiteroles, and they’re filled with custard.” “Mmm,” I said as I reached for one and took a bite. “Delicious!” Camille smiled so proudly that I wondered if she had made them. I was about to ask when she suddenly said, “A violin!” “It belonged to my father,” I explained. A look of understanding flashed through Camille’s eyes. “What a special thing to have,” she said as she squeezed my hand. “My papa died when I was five years old, and Mama let me keep one of his red handkerchiefs. I still have it.” She knows, I thought as I smiled gratefully at Camille. She knows what this feels like. “Do you play?” she continued. “Oh, no,” I said, shaking my head. “Well, a little, I suppose. But badly—very badly. I only wish I had inherited my father’s musical gifts!” Camille giggled. “I feel the same way about my mother’s culinary skills,” she confided. “She’s a genius in the kitchen, but I’m a laughingstock, an absolute disaster!” She turned away briefly to glance at the clock hanging on the wall. “I really must go, I’m afraid,” she said as she rose. “I need to watch Baby Sophie while her mother prepares the servants’ meal.” I rose with her. “Thank you for the visit and the refreshments,” I replied, though what I wanted to say was, I do wish you could stay! After Camille took her leave, my new room seemed so much quieter and lonesome. Perhaps I should’ve insisted that she stay, I thought. But of course I would never do such a thing—not when she had responsibilities to attend to. It would be unfair to put her in such a position. There’s no reason I can’t start exploring the gardens myself, I decided. I put on my favorite hat, the one with embroidered cherries scattered around the brim, and reached for my smart spring coat. Just before I left my room, I decided to take Father’s violin with me. He always loved to play outdoors on a bright spring day or a warm summer evening. Perhaps I would grow to love it too. I made my way downstairs and out the grand double doors, wondering if I’d see Cousin Colette or Cousin Henri and need to explain why I was wandering about with a violin case tucked under my arm. The only people I saw, though, were a few housemaids, who looked at me curiously before ducking into deep curtsies. I smiled broadly at them as I tried to remember their names. I’d met so many new people that everything was a blur! Outside, I followed a stone path around the back of the house, where the gardens stretched out like a beautiful patchwork quilt. A tall hedge lined the path, which twisted and turned across the property. I followed it until I came to a lovely little garden that was positively bursting with flowers in bloom, including the ones that Mother used to grow! How I wished I could remember the name of those flowers. There was a white marble bench in the middle of the garden, so I sat on it while I removed Father’s violin from the case and added a little extra rosin to the bow. Then, after carefully positioning my chin on the leather chin rest, I began to play his favorite song from memory. But the notes sounded all wrong! It was no secret that I was a poor excuse for a musician, especially compared to Father; I stopped playing after a screechy note that was off-tempo besides. The last thing I wanted to do was butcher Father’s favorite song. Then I tried my hand at a simpler tune. It wasn’t anything special, but I played it passably well. I closed my eyes as I imagined what he would say if he could hear my playing: “Better. Better! I can tell you’ve been practicing!” Even though we both knew that I hadn’t been—not as much as I should’ve, anyway. The memory brought a smile to my face, but it lasted only a moment before it faded. I had the strangest sense . . . a creeping feeling that started at the base of my head before crawling down my spine. It felt like someone was watching me. I opened my eyes. “Who’s there?” I called out loudly. Half the battle in facing one’s fears was to face them head-on, or at least, that’s what Mother always used to tell me. So I was pleasantly surprised by how steady my voice sounded. I listened carefully but heard no reply. I had no choice but to conclude that I was alone in the little garden: completely, totally, and utterly alone. Yet the feeling persisted; if anything, it grew stronger, until I was as certain as I could be that no matter what my eyes told me, I was not by myself after all. I didn’t dare hope that I might be feeling the presence of my dear father visiting me from the world beyond. I would be twelve years old in a few months, and everyone knew that twelve was way too grown-up to believe in specters and haunts from beyond the grave. Even though I would’ve given anything—anything—for one more afternoon with my parents. I took a deep breath and nestled Father’s violin under my chin once more. Then, taking extra care to hold the bow just so and to place my fingers firmly against the strings, I again attempted to play Father’s favorite song . . . just in case.

They last longer than toys and research has shown that reading to infants greatly helps development. I usually go for a Dr. Seuss set, but as the father of this particular baby is a sometimes musician, I thought these books particularly appropriate. I included two other books in the set:Baby Loves to Rock Baby Loves to Rock!Baby Loves to Boogie Baby Loves to Boogie!Together these three books make a great set for someone who wants a more goofy approach to reading to their kids.

By Jenn It can be hard to find kids' books to enjoy as an adult, since so many are poorly written these days... but we have several Wednesday Kirwin books (Baby Loves To Rock, Baby Loves To Boogie and Baby Loves To Party) and they are just as cleverly worded as they are adorably illustrated. This book is an excellent follow-up to my baby's original favorite, Baby Loves To Rock (which she has adored since she was 3 months old!)

Teeth is a wicked, politically incorrect satire about stout, horse-faced Miriam Potts and her balding obese, thirty-something son Hans. In 1979, this pair of self-righteous bigots flees from ethnically challenged Camden, New Jersey to tiny, time-warped, segregationist Gumball, Georgia in search of the kind of peace and contentment they are convinced only the Old South can offer two deserving, God fearing Episcopalians. Bent on establishing an orthodontic practice and basking in the gentile Southern way of life, instead they manage to incite a war among the KKK, the black Presbyterian and white Fundamentalist church congregations, a moonshining Sheriff, a corporate raiding party headed by a Jewish Napoleon, and the US Treasury Department.

Reed Moran "Last night I read the novella, "Teeth," by Jack Brebbia.I am a writer and a teacher of creative writing, and it's been years since I've read a project with so much depth, biting satire and truly eccentric, smashingly original character work. Jack's novel reads like a modern mixture of Faulknerian Southern Gothic, with the manic insanity and wry world view of a Carl Hiaasen.Gobble this one up and keep it on your shelf for the inevitable hankering for a re-read!!"

Evil tree. Bad Apple? Twenty years ago, all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost--a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave. Stripped of their magical powers, the villains now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world. Mal learns from her mother, Maleficent, that the key to true darkness, the Dragon's Eye, is located inside her scepter in the forbidden fortress on the far side of the island. The eye is cursed, and whoever retrieves it will be knocked into a deep sleep for a thousand years. But Mal has a plan to capture it. She'll just need a little help from her "friends." In their quest for the Dragon's Eye, these four kids begin to realize that just because you come from an evil family tree, being good ain't so bad.

Isle of the Lost, The: A Descendants Novel (Descendants, The), by Melissa de la Cruz

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—All the evil villains of Disney movie fame have been exiled to the Isle of the Lost. A huge dome covers the island, keeping them from using any magic. They are relegated to eating scraps and wearing castoffs of the good citizens of Auradon, ruled by King Beast and Queen Belle. The children of Maleficient, Jabar, Evil Queen, and Cruella De Vil (respectively Mal, Jay, Evie, and Carlos) don't know any other life away from the island. Every aspect of their existence is focused on becoming more evil, and finding nefarious ways to entertain themselves. When Carlos invents a device that is meant to provide them with more cable channels, he inadvertently opens a hole in the dome, allowing a tiny bit of magic to reactivate Maleficient's scepter, the Dragon's Eye. The four go off on a quest to find the staff, each for their own selfish reasons. All the while, though, the descendants of the most evil villains to ever walk the earth are starting to (gasp!) show signs of caring for each other. And over on Auradon, Prince Ben, son of Beast and Belle, is having visions of a beautiful blue-haired girl he's never met, even though he's betrothed to Princess Audrey, daughter of Aurora. Clichéd characters and a predictable plot probably won't deter young readers from finishing this fun little romp through practically every Disney movie ever made. VERDICT Billed as a prequel to a Disney Channel movie, there's a built-in fan base for this story. Disney lovers and fairy-tale fans alike will need to get their hands on this book.—Mandy Laferriere, Fowler Middle School, Frisco, TX

When I heard that Melissa was writing the prequel to Descendants, a Disney Channel Original Movie coming out in spring 2015, I knew I had to get my hands on this. I loved reading all the references, though it can get a bit busy. The characters are by far some of the best, and the majority of the first half of the book is introducing them and getting the readers invested in all these "villains." While some may feel this is perfect for younger kids, I had a ball reading it and can't wait to see what's in store next, maybe a little more romance, a little more plotting and of course all those villains! A TV series, in addition to the movie, would be cool since there is so much plot and world that could be built. Melissa did a great job in getting readers interested and wanting more.Head over to the HEA Blog to see what Melissa has to say about Descendants and what she's working on next!

25 of 30 people found the following review helpful. I loved every minute of this adorable and fun book! By Vi the Vi3tBabe What I Loved: The characters were easily the best part of this book. It was so much fun seeing all of our favorite Disney villains, their children, and even some of our favorite Disney heroes/heroines. These poor kids have to live in the infamous shadow of their parents and they have to deal with their craziness. I could totally see each villain behaving like they did in this book if they had children. Mal, Jay, Carlos, and Evie were excellent characters that I can see young readers connecting to. It was interesting seeing them being raised to be evil and like their parents, yet having them feel like that may not be who they’re meant to be. You also get to see a lot of the “sidekicks” in this book, like the dwarfs, goblins, Flounder, Cinderella’s mice, etc. They’ve got problems of their own, too, you know. What Didn’t Work for Me: The only thing that really bugged me was that the whole “adventure” aspect wasn’t as strong as I was hoping. I thought it would be the main focus of the book, but it focuses more on introducing readers to the characters, seeing them come together, and helping readers visualize this island where these villains have lived on over the years. Not that there was anything necessarily wrong with that, because I loved seeing all the characters and how Melissa pictured them nowadays, but the synopsis had me thinking the book would have more action and adventure.Recommended for fans of: Any Disney movie/story, really. If you’re a Disney fan, you’ll love this book!Final Verdict: I would definitely recommend this book to any and all Disney fans and fans of retellings. I can tell this is going to be an amazing series and I love that it was also made into a Disney Channel Original Movie, with some of my favorite Disney Channel actors. Yes, I watch Disney Channel shows/movies with my kids (and even without them sometimes) and I’m not ashamed to admit that I like them. The Descendants was such a cute and fun read. I really loved it!

By jwgeist Bought this partly for my 2 boys (3 and 5 years old) as a new bedtime story, and mostly for me as a long time Royals fan. It is a terrific book, and an amazing retelling of the Wildcard Game from the Royals incredible 2014 Playoff run. The illustrations are terrific and funny, and the book itself has some great tongue-in-cheek moments for adults, while keeping a terrific poetic flow through the story. It gave me chills as it developed through and described the different moments of the Wildcard game. I'll probably ask my kids to let me read this to them more often than they'll ask me to read it! Would be a great buy for any Royals fan, with or without kids.

I was fortunate enough to attend that Wild Card game, and I got goosebumps reading through the book and remembering that incredible night. Both the rhyming story and the pictures are really cute and I've already read it to my kids several times - and we just got it this morning! Our baby was with us that night, and although she won't remember the game, I love that I'll be able to read her this story and tell her that she was there.

The 2014 AL Wild Card game is one of those sometimes. This poetic retelling of that perfect night has everything a Royals fan could want and more. The illustrations are incredible and the moment by moment game recap in verse will bring back those once in a lifetime feelings of vicarious victory. Buy this book. Buy 10 of these books. Never forget what it feels like to win.
