Evil tree. Bad Apple? Twenty years ago, all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost--a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave. Stripped of their magical powers, the villains now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world. Mal learns from her mother, Maleficent, that the key to true darkness, the Dragon's Eye, is located inside her scepter in the forbidden fortress on the far side of the island. The eye is cursed, and whoever retrieves it will be knocked into a deep sleep for a thousand years. But Mal has a plan to capture it. She'll just need a little help from her "friends." In their quest for the Dragon's Eye, these four kids begin to realize that just because you come from an evil family tree, being good ain't so bad.

Isle of the Lost, The: A Descendants Novel (Descendants, The), by Melissa de la Cruz

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—All the evil villains of Disney movie fame have been exiled to the Isle of the Lost. A huge dome covers the island, keeping them from using any magic. They are relegated to eating scraps and wearing castoffs of the good citizens of Auradon, ruled by King Beast and Queen Belle. The children of Maleficient, Jabar, Evil Queen, and Cruella De Vil (respectively Mal, Jay, Evie, and Carlos) don't know any other life away from the island. Every aspect of their existence is focused on becoming more evil, and finding nefarious ways to entertain themselves. When Carlos invents a device that is meant to provide them with more cable channels, he inadvertently opens a hole in the dome, allowing a tiny bit of magic to reactivate Maleficient's scepter, the Dragon's Eye. The four go off on a quest to find the staff, each for their own selfish reasons. All the while, though, the descendants of the most evil villains to ever walk the earth are starting to (gasp!) show signs of caring for each other. And over on Auradon, Prince Ben, son of Beast and Belle, is having visions of a beautiful blue-haired girl he's never met, even though he's betrothed to Princess Audrey, daughter of Aurora. Clichéd characters and a predictable plot probably won't deter young readers from finishing this fun little romp through practically every Disney movie ever made. VERDICT Billed as a prequel to a Disney Channel movie, there's a built-in fan base for this story. Disney lovers and fairy-tale fans alike will need to get their hands on this book.—Mandy Laferriere, Fowler Middle School, Frisco, TX

When I heard that Melissa was writing the prequel to Descendants, a Disney Channel Original Movie coming out in spring 2015, I knew I had to get my hands on this. I loved reading all the references, though it can get a bit busy. The characters are by far some of the best, and the majority of the first half of the book is introducing them and getting the readers invested in all these "villains." While some may feel this is perfect for younger kids, I had a ball reading it and can't wait to see what's in store next, maybe a little more romance, a little more plotting and of course all those villains! A TV series, in addition to the movie, would be cool since there is so much plot and world that could be built. Melissa did a great job in getting readers interested and wanting more.Head over to the HEA Blog to see what Melissa has to say about Descendants and what she's working on next!

It was so much fun seeing all of our favorite Disney villains, their children, and even some of our favorite Disney heroes/heroines. These poor kids have to live in the infamous shadow of their parents and they have to deal with their craziness. I could totally see each villain behaving like they did in this book if they had children. Mal, Jay, Carlos, and Evie were excellent characters that I can see young readers connecting to. It was interesting seeing them being raised to be evil and like their parents, yet having them feel like that may not be who they’re meant to be. You also get to see a lot of the “sidekicks” in this book, like the dwarfs, goblins, Flounder, Cinderella’s mice, etc. They’ve got problems of their own, too, you know. What Didn’t Work for Me: The only thing that really bugged me was that the whole “adventure” aspect wasn’t as strong as I was hoping. I thought it would be the main focus of the book, but it focuses more on introducing readers to the characters, seeing them come together, and helping readers visualize this island where these villains have lived on over the years. Not that there was anything necessarily wrong with that, because I loved seeing all the characters and how Melissa pictured them nowadays, but the synopsis had me thinking the book would have more action and adventure.Recommended for fans of: Any Disney movie/story, really. If you’re a Disney fan, you’ll love this book!Final Verdict: I would definitely recommend this book to any and all Disney fans and fans of retellings. I can tell this is going to be an amazing series and I love that it was also made into a Disney Channel Original Movie, with some of my favorite Disney Channel actors. Yes, I watch Disney Channel shows/movies with my kids (and even without them sometimes) and I’m not ashamed to admit that I like them. The Descendants was such a cute and fun read. I really loved it!
