A collection of fantasy and sci-fi stories from author and blogger Carla Billinghurst. “Carla is one of my favourite as-yet-undiscovered writers.” Nike Sulway (Rupetta, The Bone Flute) Sometimes dark, sometimes tragic and sometimes just hilarious, she brings you stories about our uneasy relationship with nature, about star-crossed lovers a long way from Earth and about the endless absurdities of life as a human. “My favourite and beloved piece is Counting... it's short, beautiful and it made me cry.” Sandra Hogan (WriteBusiness.com) In a universe where the absurd slider control has been moved almost to maximum, Milton wants to live life as a penguin, the Zombie Apocalypse comes to Australia…and Transylvania…and to Cinderella’s night at the ball. “By far the best Halloween story I've read. Brilliant stuff.” Jane Rawson (A Wrong Turn at the Office of Unmade Lists) And when it all gets too much, there is always The Emergency Cat. “Just the right mix of absurdity, gore and humour. And a cat. Mostly the Cat.” – Damien Miller

Buy 'Halibut, Herring and You' By Judith I was very happy to receive a free copy of Halibut, Herring and You for review. I enjoyed it so much I am buying copies as well for family and friends who like sci fi/short stories/fantasy/quirkiness.Carla Billinghurst’s stories are full of surprises, full of fun, full of clever twists and tweaks. They bear what I consider the hallmark of good writing: they haunt the mind and the mind’s eye. Long after you’ve finished reading them they pop into your thoughts. For instance, days after I’d finished the book, I suddenly understood the significance of the plural in the title ‘Lilies’.I’m big on picking favourites, and my top 3 from this collection are ‘Fire’, ‘Counting’ and ‘The End of the Line’. The characterisation in ‘Fire’ is particularly impressive, and I like the mixture of menace and fun. ‘Counting’ is short and deceptively simple – it uses no names, yet we care about the protagonists. It is sad and sweet, and warns us to be sensitive to the impact our words have on others.‘The End of the Line’ reminds me of a sculpture in the Shepparton Art Museum. It is called The Four Horsemen of the 21st Century Apocalypse (http://www.cv.vic.gov.au/stories/creative-life/craft-where-is-it/shepparton-art-gallery/). Both Penny Byrne’s sculpture and Carla’s story give a chilling foretaste of what our world may soon become.Carla’s writing is fresh, and I love the way she invites us to create our own backstories for the worlds she shows us such tantalising glimpses of. Even more, I love the way the worlds she creates shine a light on our own world.I highly recommend Halibut, Herring and You. Do yourself a favour and buy a copy today.

Ward Although I normally dislike stories about zombies, I love to watch authors meet the challenge of writing a good short story and I like to read about Australia, so I gave this book by Australian author Carla Billinghurst a try. I was certainly not disappointed. Many of the stories have a science fiction bent, and all were creative and quirky enough that they kept my interest. Some are also great social commentary and most are very funny besides. The title story, Halibut, Herring and You, set the tone for the whole book. It laid out a farcical situation in a serious fashion without explaination or apology. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it spread and develop before me.I also especially enjoyed the story entitled Fire. It was entertaining and funny and yet creatively made its points about life and families and the people who populate them without making them overtly. The Emergency Cat reads like a traditional fairy tale - from an alternate universe. This book is one that inspires furter rumination on the plots and the points, well after the reading is done.I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Reading Deals in return for an honest review, which I would always be giving anyway. If you like to have your imagination stirred and your thought stimulated while still being thoroughly entertained, buy this book.

This collection is a grab-bag of interest and amazement. It is cheeky and irreverent, grotesque, offbeat and full of interesting "what if?"s. Carla writes with humour and a keen eye for the quirks of human nature. Humour is tempered with true feeling, with sublime and aching love in pieces such as "Counting", through to the crashing despair of broken dreams in "Lilies"."Fire", "Halibut" and The Emergency Cat were my personal favourites, but the whole book is packed full, as it should be, of Fire and Surprises ;-)
