Estonia may be at peace but Conrad Wolff, now a master of the Sword Brothers, seethes with anger against a wrong committed against him and his friends. The aftermath will lead to Livonia and Estonia being dragged into international politics as the Papacy intervenes in the affairs of the Sword Brothers and Livonia. Meanwhile a frustrating war continues against the pagan Lithuanians in the south, a conflict that puts a severe strain on the resources of the Sword Brothers. But it is in the north where a crisis suddenly develops, resulting in Conrad and his order facing annihilation in the freezing wastes. Against this dire backdrop Conrad is forced to make a decision that will have major ramifications for both him and the Sword Brothers. And in the aftermath of that decision a giant of the crusader kingdom in the Baltic leaves the stage. ‘Master of Mayhem’ is the fourth volume of the Crusader Chronicles and continues the story of Conrad Wolff and the Baltic Crusade in the first half of the thirteenth century. Maps of Livonia in the thirteenth century, the Lithuanian kingdoms and the tribal lands of Estonia can be found on the maps page of my website: www.peterdarman.com

Again, for those who have read the previous instalments, it is mostly “more of the same”, with a few additional and new twists. One is that you see through the deeds and enrichment of the merchants of Riga the beginning of the emergence of what will become the powerful Hanseatic League. Another is that the Kurs from Kurland will prove to be remarkably effective enemies for the Sword Brothers and Crusaders, and a match for them, as you will when reading the book.A third twist is the consequence of Suzi’s rise in the world. He is not only a Master and castellan of a fortress in Estonia that it holds for his Order. He is also the Marshal of Estonia and commander of the Army of the Wolf which includes thousands of well-equipped Baltic warriors around their chieftains. These will only accept to serve under his orders and will be baptised thanks to him. They also make up one of the most effective components of the Crusader armies, alongside the contingents of the Sword Brothers themselves. Because of his titles and his past exploits, Conrad Wolff (Suzi) has become a power in the land and a major warlord. You will see him exercising this influence in a couple of instances throughout the book where he essentially saves the sum of things and makes everything possible thanks to his initiative. Another twist is that Suzi and his army, and the Crusader forces more generally, do not carry everything before them this time. In fact they suffer defeats and are lucky to get away with their lives and avoid complete destruction from two sets of ferocious enemies. As usual, the author has been generally faithful to what little historical record (all written by the German side) there is. Many of his leading characters are therefore historical, starting with the Bishops Albert of Riga and his brother Herman, although the evil and cowardly archdeacon Stefan and nephew of the ageing Bishop Albert is fictional. He does tend to depict the Sword Brothers as mostly “nice”, despite their often shady background and involvement as mercenaries in the endemic conflicts between warlords in Germany and the atrocities and massacres that were committed. It is therefore a bit hard to believe that the Sword Brothers would, without exception, behave impeccably while the “nasty Danes” and their own German mercenaries would lay waste to the north of Estonia and pillage.Again, I very much enjoyed the Oeselians – a small kingdom on an island just opposite the golf of Riga and made of unrepentant pagan Vikings. They are rather flamboyant, as their attack of a Danish fleet will no doubt show you. They are also the epitome of Viking raiders and “traditional” Viking values, with reckless bravery being one of the main ones. However, their wise and thoughtful King Sigurd manages to control them and brings the best out of them, at least in military terms.Another very enjoyable read which I will rate a solid and well-deserved four stars. Note however that the small print makes this slightly over 300 pages-book longer (and also a bit harder) to read than could have been the case otherwise.

Noesner Master of Mayhem is the latest in the great series that Peter Darman has crafted, a master at historical fiction. I felt this fourth book in the series did not contain enough of the exciting battle scenes that I have come to expect from Darman. Still, this book will not disappoint readers of the series. I eagerly await the next book in the series.

Crusader Battles In the Baltic By James Dainis This novel takes place in the early part of the 13th century in the Baltic countries of Estonia and Lithuania. Conrad Wolfe is a master of the Sword Brothers, a group of crusaders who have taken vows of chastity and poverty and who fight to spread Christianity among the heathen countries. In this novel they join forces with the Lithuanians to help defeat the Kurs, a clan of superior fighting men who want to conquer all of Lithuania. Conrad and the army are hampered by incompetent leaders as they face a superior foe. This is a theme that runs throughout the book as other ill conceived battles are planned against well led armies of non Christians. Conrad has to take part in these battles even though he is more concerned about a Danish outpost north of Estonia that he fears the king of Denmark will use as a stepping stone for a full scale invasion of Estonia. This is a well written novel with lots of battle action and stratagems. The characters are well drawn and fleshed out as are the descriptions of the Baltic countries at the various times of year. It is a bit of an irritant that although Conrad does everything unselfishly for the betterment of the local villagers and settlers, he is viewed with disdain by officials who seek only wealth and betterment for themselves. He does triumph as one would expect but one can see that the antagonists are still out to see him undone. That, of course, leads to interest in the next book in the series which I shall have to read to see if Conrad can finally win out over the dark forces in the Christian community itself.
