Henry V was a man whose charm and military genius - and concern for his subjects - made him one of the most popular kings in English history. Set in the lusty and tumultuous fifteenth century, this superb novel traces the brilliant career of the all-conquering victor of Agincourt. Among the last of the great medieval rulers and the first of the ardent nation builders, Henry V is seen from several perspectives: his queen; his beautiful Welsh mistress, Morgan; his court jester, the fool; a comrade-in-arms; and his own point of view as both boy and man. They illuminate the many sides of Henry V's personality - the devil-may-care prince portrayed by Shakespeare, the bold hero of Agincourt, the husband of Katharine of Valois, and the warrior-peacemaker who welded England, Wales, and France into a single kingdom. Martha Rofheart goes behind the textbook facade of history and tells the story of the real Henry, a man of fierce pride and strong passions, to discover how ‘Fortune Made His Sword’. She describes how Henry won and lost the beautiful Morgan ab Owen and how he later found brief happiness in the arms of his young French Queen. ‘Fortune Made His Sword’ is a thrilling historical tale of adventure, endeavour and intrigue. It was originally published as ‘Cry “God for Harry”’. Praise for Martha Rofheart: ‘A tale of drinking, wenching, hunting and fighting’ Evening News ‘Cause for celebration!’ Los Angeles Times Martha Rofheart grew up in the Portland neighbourhood of Louisville, surrounded by a large Upper Middle Class extended family, which was spread out along Portland Avenue and nearby streets. Growing up she had several poems published in Louisville newspapers and magazines, and at age 10, she won a national one-act play contest. After moving to New York City, Martha became a model and actress. Martha made her Broadway debut in 1942, and was a well-known protégé. Soon after her son was born in 1957, she chose to be a full-time mother and, eventually, a writer. After Fortune Made His Sword, Martha Rofheart wrote five novels and many of her novels were translated into German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Serbian. Review "A book one hates to put down...the people live." -Granville Hicks, New York Times Book Review"Martha Rofheart has used her historical knowledge and her creative imagination to give us a splendid full-scale portrait of a mighty man." -Gilbert Highet, The Book of the Month Club News, Feb. 1971"One of the year's best historical novels." -Boston Herald Traveler"Marvelous feeling and flavor...remarkable...a marvelous story." -Providence Journal"Dazzling...a sort of literary son et lumiere".  -Mollie Panter-Downes

From the Inside Flap Fortune made his sword is spellbinding reading, and the picture Martha Rofheart paints of the hero-king, Henry V, is totally hypnotic in it's appeal. The book brings Henry magically to life in a multifaceted novel filled with turmoil, violence and romance, and it marks the debut of a major new talent in the arena of historical fiction.      This is an entertaining and skillful recreation of the life and times of a man whose charm and military genius -- and concern for his subjects -- made him one of the most popular kings in English history. The story brings to life not only the man, but one of the most fantastic periods in the fifteenth century.     Among the last of the great medieval rulers and the first of the ardent nation builders, Henry V is seen from several perspectives: his queen; his beautiful Welsh mistress, Morgan; his court jester, the fool; a comrade-in-arms; and his own point of view as both boy and man.     As actors in this immense drama, they illuminate the many sides of Henry V's personality -- the devil-may-care prince portrayed by Shakespeare, the bold hero of Agincourt, the husband of Katherine of Valois,  and the warrior-peacemaker who welded England, Wales and France into a single kingdom.     FORTUNE MADE HIS SWORD will prove a compelling reading experience for everyone who enjoys a good story told with felicity and a fine regard for historical accuracy.

About the Author Writing is a second career for Martha Rofheart. She spent her earlier years in the theater, playing with such stars as the Lunts and Helen hays. Familiarity with Shakespearean roles, in particular the Chronicle plays, led her to the writing of this novel.     Miss Rofheart was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but much of her background is Welsh. The legend and history of Wales which appear in this novel were learned first at her grandfather's knee. This is her first novel.

A fine and entertaining historical novel By strega2 I first picked this book up at a library sale, and was rewarded with one of the most exciting and well-written historical novels I've yet read. Rofheart tells the story of the young Henry V, and makes the story of his brief but remarkable life a tale that pulls you in from the first page. And there is an added treat for the legions of fans of Anya Setion's "Katherine": her character is given a major place in this novel, vivid, warm and very real, from her marriage to John of Gaunt to her death. A first-rate biographical novel, and a must for fans of English historical fiction.

Lyons Just when I feared I had read "all" the truly good historical fiction writers, I find a new treasure trove: Martha RofheartIn my opinion, her style rivals that of Llewellen, Penman, etc certainly for quality and re-reading. It may seem a bit drier, but I think that has more to do with changes in the genre since the '70s. (when it was written)As for this book, I loved it. Rofheart's depiction of Henry V and his life and loves brought him to life for me, as Sharon Kay Penman did for Richard III, Edward IV, and others. It is told from 5 different points of view at different times in Henry's life: Himself at boyhood, His first love Morgan ap Owen of his teens, Up to his last days.Wonderful story, to be savored rather than gobbled :)

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Henry V Brought To Life By Miranda Good I recently read Ian Mortimer's excellent biography "The Fears of Henry IV" and became fascinated by the story of that "usurper king," so it made sense to continue on with the story of his son, Henry V, champion of Agincourt. Rofheart's offering, although fiction rather than straight biography, richly fills the bill. Told by separate narrators - Henry himself, his Welsh mistress, his father's fool, a knight-at-arms and his young French queen - the story unfolds semi-chronologically and succeeds in describing Henry and his medieval world from differing viewpoints. The writing here is literate and unforced; the dialogue rings true; the historical background is essentially accurate; and the author richly brings these people to life. For lovers of historical fiction, there aren't many better than this one.

Being a good parent is one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding, jobs a person can have in his or her lifetime. Being the parent of a teen is an especially daunting phase of the journey. As parents begin to notice the significant changes that come with adolescence (physical changes brought about by puberty, the constant angst and moodiness, and of course the classic eye-rolling and the I-know-it-all attitude), they wonder just what happened to their happy, sweet, and affectionate young boy or girl. Parents sit by amazed—and often lost and unprepared—as they witness their child morph and mutate into a full-blown pubescent display of emotions. The Angst of Adolescence: How to Parent Your Teen and Live to Laugh About It, written in a conversational, informative, humorous and relatable style, promises to deliver trustworthy resource for parents of teens who are searching for answers and guidance about how to maneuver their way through this tricky developmental period. Dr. Sara Villanueva, a prominent psychologist specializing in the adolescent years, shares relevant research findings so that parents can be informed of the facts as opposed to making assumptions based on ubiquitous but questionable sources. Most of all it will provide parents of teenagers with perspective in the midst of angst so they can come away with the sense that:

  • They are not alone in their experience of raising teens; many, many people have gone through it and we can all relate to and learn from one another.
  • Most of what your teen is feeling and expressing is normal and falls within the expected range of behavior for adolescent development.
  • Despite the challenges involved in parenting teens, we should take time to focus on the positive things in life and live with our child through the tough adolescent years so that we emerge on the other side with friendship and a deeper bond.
  • As a psychologist and mother of four, the author shares both research-based and first-hand advice on how to navigate the teen years and live to laugh about it.

The Angst of Adolescence: How to Parent Your Teen and Live to Laugh About It, by Sara Villanueva

Review “Villanueva, a developmental psychologist, uses an informal, conversational style in this helpful parenting book, sharing anecdotes from her own experiences as a mother of four who is currently raising two teens, as well as up-to-date information on brain development. Villanueva reminds readers that risky behaviors by teens reflect the fact that their brains are not yet fully developed. She also warns against ‘drawing a line in the sand” as teens are likely to respond to ‘forbidden fruits’ with rebellion. With its encouraging tone, Villanueva’s friendly primer will help parents learn to appreciate, enjoy, and accept their teens as they are, while patiently negotiating the challenges and changes inherent in adolescence.” – Publishers Weekly“With humor and great warmth, Sara Villanueva tackles issues that can seem unsettling or bewildering to most parents. Her voice is reassuring, and by the end of the book you know you're not only up for the challenge of parenting a teen, but that you're not in it alone.” – Ami Albernaz, Boston Globe contributor“While reading The Angst of Adolescence, I loved Sara’s conversational voice, assurance, examples, information, and humor. I can't imagine any parent of a teen who wouldn't enjoy and profit from this mix of professional with personal insight.” – Carl Pickhardt, PhD, author of the blog and book, Surviving Your Child's Adolescence“Sara Villanueva does a masterful job of balancing the sound advice of an experienced parent with the scientific literature of adolescent development and parenting. She strikes a tone that is both authoritative and completely conversational. I feel better equipped to tackle my son’s upcoming transition into adolescence and wish this kind of parenting instruction manual were available sooner.” – Russell Frohardt, professor of Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience, St. Edward’s University“Sara Villanueva brings to light what so many parents of teens are feeling. By providing humorous anecdotes mixed with sound, research-based advice, all delivered in a relaxed and relatable style, she informs and reassures parents of the wonderful world of adolescence and how they can learn to laugh about it.” – Vicki Hoefle, author of The Straight Talk on Parenting and the best-selling Duct Tape Parenting“The Angst of Adolescence will help every parent understand how to go through this difficult stage without losing their mind. According to Sara Villanueva, you could even have some fun along the way!” – Jennifer Kerzil, PhD, associate professor of psychology, Universite´ Catholique de l’Ouest, Angers, France“Such a remarkable and much needed book! Dr. Villanueva’s voice and personal stories, combined with her professional expertise, set the tone and made me laugh out loud! As a Dean of Students at a liberal arts university, and as a parent of a 16-year-old, the wisdom shared in this book is ‘just in time’ and speaks to the tumultuous times of transition that our teens experience and that we, as parents, encounter too. Her insight is smart, authentic, and extremely hopeful!” – Lisa L. Kirkpatrick, PhD, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students, St. Edward's University"Dr. Villanueva has captured the real Angst of Adolescence, as experienced by teens AND their parents. Blending her knowledge as both a developmental psychologist and a mother of teens, she gives parents valuable information about caring for and raising teens while also caring for ourselves as our kids grow up, move on and begin their adult lives." – Stacey Borasky, Ed. D, MSW, Associate Professor and Chair, Dept. of Social Work, Sociology and Criminology, St. Edward’s University"Ease your angst of raising adolescents with this contemporary, honest, hilarious and research based 'manual' for not only surviving, but thriving as parents of adolescents. By john ingram I was fortunate enough to read an advance copy of Dr. Villanueva's new book, The Angst of Adolescence, and it was love at first chapter! I was immediately stricken by how Dr. V seemed to have a window not only into my soul, but the souls of both of the relationships between me and my daughters. I only wish I had had her book and invaluable insights when I was actually going through all the angst my teenagers were dealing with and the angst I felt trying to navigate them, and myself, through those often choppy waters! While reading this gem of a book, I laughed a lot, cried a little, and more than anything, just found comfort that I was not alone in the way I was feeling - that WE were not alone in the way we were all feeling - and dealing with going through the angst of adolescence. If you have a teen or a younger child who will be there soon enough, READ THIS BOOK! If not, get it for someone you know and love who does. They will thank you for it!

I wanted to read it cover to cover in one sitting! This book is engaging, funny, and educational all at once. It's incredibly fluid and easy to read and makes enjoying the content effortless. There is so much of value here! Even though Villanueva is a trained psychologist, she is also an experienced mom, and that is what sets this book apart from others in its genre. It speaks undeniable truths and resonates with parents of tweens or teens. I see so much of my own experiences as a mother in these pages and I so appreciate the validation in Villanueva's narratives. The book is also great at working in the psychology stuff without being clinical or preachy. This is a fabulous book!

Essential Reading for Parents of Teens By Peter Beck As the father of a newly minted teenager, this is the best book I have seen on how to successfully navigate the turbulent and rewarding years ahead. It provides a wealth of practical advice, is written in a style accessible to non-psychologists, and is supported throughout by scholarly research, giving me greater confidence in the trustworthiness of her conclusions than other books in this genre.

An essential for the postmodern library, this collection is like nothing else you’ve read—a trio of short novels that tackles stardom, science fiction, movies, love affairs, twins, French people, writing colonies, parenting, missionaries, murder, and holograms. Martian Dawn was hailed by avant-garde writer Harry Mathews as “an ultra-cool comedy of the future.” Are We Done Here? zips the reader from the New York demimonde to the rain forest and back again. And On My Way to See You is a French murder mystery in which the carpet keeps getting pulled—and you keep liking it. As cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum says, author Michael Friedman “takes fiction seriously by not taking it seriously.” Brilliant and hugely entertaining, Martian Dawn and Other Novels is destined for a cult following.

Martian Dawn and Other Novels, by Michael Friedman

From Publishers Weekly A Richard obviously based on Gere and a Julia obviously based on Roberts are called back to work reshooting—on Mars—the botched ending to a science fiction movie, Martian Dawn. Julia, in an earlier life an exotic dancer at the Baby Doll lounge in Phoenix, has just finished work on Cat Fight at the OK Corral, the story of "supermodels on the loose in Manhattan." Richard, a devout Buddhist, has been following his dharma (and his spiritual teacher, Rinpoche) around the country, bedding women on the side. Meanwhile, two of the sequestered inhabitants of a self-contained biosphere experiment in the Arizona desert are sneaking out at night for pizza, while Russian and American astronauts, two women and two men, orbit overhead flirting with each other. And elsewhere in the comically off-kilter universe of this larky debut novel from poet Friedman (Species), a man in a bar is obsessed by Monstro, a pet baby whale who has been freed into the Atlantic. Friedman (by day a commercial law attorney in Denver) skewers Hollywood pomposity, environmental idealism, spiritual empowerment—and the surprising banality of a human outpost on Mars—with prose that's a marvel of economy, sardonic without excess sarcasm and rife with deadpan humor. Slight but sly, this is a scrumptious literary trifle. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    Review

“On every page there is something funny, sad, weird, or some combination thereof, conjured by Friedman’s deadpan tone, pile-up of cliche and detail, and the placement of quotidian characters into absurd situations (or vice versa).” —The L Magazine

“Friedman’s urbane silliness and élan hark back to the glittering twilight of high camp—without seeming to hark back. Hats off to Little A for reissuing Martian Dawn and Other Novels. I didn’t know anyone could still make it look so easy to have so much fun on the page.” —Lorin Stein, editor-in-chief of The Paris Review

“Michael Friedman has one of the best sensibilities in contemporary lit. Martian Dawn possesses the impeccable construction, low gravity, and shimmering surface of something written with a magic wand.” —Dennis Cooper

“Michael Friedman’s novels are analytical, fun to read, and profoundly nourishing. He takes fiction seriously by not taking it seriously.” —Wayne Koestenbaum

“Reading Martian Dawn is like watching an ultra-cool comedy of the future where familiar movie types develop into idyllic interplanetary characters in order to make yet more movies. It’s as though Star Trek, Pretty Woman, and There’s Something About Mary had been sublimated in an unlikely fusion that is both comforting and hilarious.” —Harry Mathews

“Michael Friedman’s metrosexuals are direct descendants of characters in Ronald Firbank and Ivy Compton-Burnett. Their wisecracking rises consistently to the level of poetry.” —John Ashbery

    About the Author

Finding Meaning In Society and Out of It--With a Martian Twist By Kevin Killian I've written so much about Michael Friedman's work that some people will think me a hired hack, but as much as I'd like to be able to boast I've had a check from Friedman, I'm out here on my own every bit as lonely as Irene Cara in FAME. In the meantime Friedman's MARTIAN DAWN arrives with a resplendent, evocative Neutra-inspired cover by the painter Duncan Hannah), who previously did the drawings for ARTS AND LETTERS, Friedman's 1996 book of linked prose poems). Hannah picks right up on Friedman's inspired vision of Mars not as the haunted red planet but as instead an alternative vacation spot like Palm Desert or maybe, Scottsdale. His novel is a sort of travelogue, in which sophisticated earthlings find spiritual renewal by visiting a warmer place where they can dry themselves out, so naturally it has affinities with A NEST OF NINNIES, the novel Ashbery and Schuyler wrote in the 1960s about suburban Long Island.MARTIAN DAWN, however, has a vaguely futuristic feel to it, as it deals with persons and institutions known to us in the present day--such as Naropa, the Buddhist poetry seminary of Boulder, Colorado--and Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, here left floundering in the wake of their huge success with PRETTY WOMAN and not really knowing how to follow it up properly in a Hollywood increasingly without borders. Have any of you seen the Pauly Shore-Kylie Minogue vehicle BIODOME (1996), in which she plays a Teutonic scientist sequestered in a Mojave biodome with a pair of goofy American stoners played by Shore and Stephen Baldwin? Friedman liberally shakes and stirs BIO-DOME's flimsy plot until it shimmers into a confetti of brightly colored nouns, adjectives and verbs. It isn't all chuckles and Ronald Firbank hijinks however. Last night we watched EUROPA 51, Roberto Rossellini's exploration of postwar malaise, with Ingrid Bergman as a vapid socialite who, once she loses her son, panics and loses her place in the world until she finds a path towards sainthood. It's no accident that the various couples in MARTIAN DAWN have similarly lost the plot, and found themselves instead at a spiritual crossroad. "It's like MOBY DICK meets THE APARTMENT," says an aspiring screenwriter, trying to pitch a script about "Monstro," the whale. The Rinpoche (the worldly Tibetan monk to whom the Richard Gere character has apprenticed himself) has his own moment of realization, as he relaxes with a whiskey sour in the Ritz-Carlton of Mars. "He remembered Blackie Friedlander telling him about how scientists believed that life as we know it had begun eons ago when a large chunk of Mars broke off and became a meteor that struck Earth, introducing Martian microorganisms: the first life on Earth. In a sense, Blackie had explained, we are all Martians." Strange comfort, isn't it, and yet we need something to gain sustenance from. Friedman turns Shelley on his head, makes a lovely world from an old teardrop. "Above the transparent dome of the pavilion the stars were pinholes in carbon paper."

By Arch Llewellyn Martian Dawn broke into my personal Top Five "Poet's Novels" about here:"Rinpoche was a great Tibetan Buddhist teacher. He lived in a 4,000-square-foot ranch-style house with an indoor basketball half-court in East Boulder along the thirteenth fairway of the Flatirons Golf Course."The book's charms are all here in miniature--the studied flatness; the social commentary posing as value-neutral information; and the economy of a cartoonist's line that leaves the shading in of irony to you. When poets take to novels, I usually brace for flowery prose and a soggy plot. Friedman though adopts a style clean as ether and characters no deeper than the branded products they carry to throw attention on the geometry of their anomie. Interchangeable couples get run through a plot of mix `n' match relationships that suggest, with dry humor and a light touch, that whether it's in Buddhist meditation centers on Mars or at the bar of the Yale Club, the mind is a terrible Ritz-Carlton to waste.

Gates There are so many things I could say about this book, but should I reach the heights of elegance achieved only by Shakespeare, Hawthorne himself, or Faulkner, I could not overcome the horrible, terrible misconceptions most people have formed after having this beautiful novel foisted upon them in high school. Instead, I'll share a few observations and some tips for reading.First, this is a complicated story. It's not about evil Puritans and hero Hester, although you will read this point of view in the cheat note summaries on the internet. It's not about feminism, really, nor is it about religion in any technical sense. The only comparison that really fits is that of love story, or love triangle, or maybe love square. (I told you it is complicated.) In all of literature, there are very few writers who have penned characters so incredibly real and well-rounded. When you finish the novel, you KNOW these people. Certainly there is some minor societal commentary, but the real story here is about these people. Now, I'm assuming that many people looking at this page have been told they must read this book for high school English. As a former teacher of said subject, I have some pointers.(1) Make sure you read the book for yourself. Chances are (in our current educational system) your teacher is going to have a flat interpretation of this book, likely gleaned from some ready-made teaching packet. (If you have another kind of teacher, consider yourself lucky.) You can have some very interesting class discussions if you actually read the material and challenge some of the majority opinions about the novel. Be a rebel. Have some fun in English.(2) Read *The Custom House* introduction, but wait until after you've finished the book. It's only good in that it explains Hawthorne's view of his own book (difficult and painful) and reveals his struggle to write it. The writing style, however, is decidedly un-Hawthorne and more difficult to read than the rest of the book. If you read it first, you will be unfairly biased against the novel.(3)Read it SLOWLY, if at all possible. The storyline is complex and should be read with care. I would also recommend underlining and taking notes, if your copy of the book allows it. You will develop a truly deep appreciation of the work.(4) Finally, avoid the Demi Moore 1995 adaptation AT ALL COSTS. Words cannot describe how awful it is. And if your hope is to find something to help you on the test, the only real similarities are the character's names and the red patch on Hester's dress. If you must see a film version, find the PBS miniseries with John Heard and Meg Foster (made in the 1970s). It does the best job that a film possibly could with this material.

It was one of the first books I downloaded when I got my kindle 2. The character portrayals are superb. It analyses the thoughts, motivations, strengths and weaknesses of the four major characters in the story - Hester Prynn, the vengeful doctor, the hapless minister and Hester's vivacious and elf-like daughter Pearl. The description of the little girl and how she copes with being ostracized with her mother by a rigid puritanical society, is especially moving. While there are some descriptions of nature that are quite vivid, most of the text goes into developing these four characters and is a fascinating psychological study, though at times it's little slow.Overall, a well-crafted story and a good read. The book though is hard to navigate on the kindle because it has no active table of contents. I therefore would not purchase this version at regular price. Luckily, it's free!

However, unlike many reviewers here, I have a much different view of the story. As some people have said before, Hawthorne's book takes a good deal of concentration, effort, and strength to understand. Not only to understand, but to finish. The story can drag sometimes, it is true, and Hawthorne's style of writing occasionally leaves something to be desired (I don't think I've ever seen that many commas, 15 letter words, or page long paragraphs before), but we simply must look past these minor issues. Overall, the plot is highly creative and intense, despite the writing.\Ok, ok, I agree that the first chapter, "The Custom-House", was pretty bad. In fact, it was so bad and boring that I drifted off to sleep several times while reading it! The first chapter has little relevancy with the story, so, unless you have to, I would suggest skipping that part of the text. The rest is exceptionally good, and the quality of the plot cannot be overlooked. My advice is to just lay off the first chapter; that way you'll be able to enjoy the rest of the book without difficulty. The story itself deals with sin and adultery, a subject that isn't very popular right now. Hawthorne does an excellent job of telling us about this, but he leaves the reader with many questions floating around in his mind at the conclusion. At the end of the story you're not 100% sure if Hawthorne was condemning the Puritan society, or if he was commending it. He leaves that for the reader to figure out, which is a thing authors seldom do. That's a major reason I believe this work is so unique and timeless. The story involves a women named Hester Prynne, living in the New World in the late 17th century. She has committed adultery with someone unknown, and, since the Puritan society considered the Bible to be their ultimate source of law, the punishment was quite severe for such an act. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet "A" (for adultery) on her attire at all times, as a sign to everyone that she has sinned deeply. And so she must carry out the rest of her life this way. That's the major gist of the plot, although there's much more. I won't give it anyway, though, you'll have to read the book to find out.Let's face it: at some time or another we all are going to probably have to read this book, voluntarily or involuntarily. Shouldn't we try to make the best of it? Read it for its enjoyment, anything else would be missing the point.

Wow DW, this journey is the most convoluted to date; I mean you have taken me on some extreme rides, but I think this one is the wildest yet!I remembered after finishing Unfinished Melody, book 1, that I was more fascinated with the dynamic plot, and who would end up with whom, more so than any love and/or connection to the characters themselves. Those feelings remained true to form as I completed PH. At times Marni would show such strength and resolve; then other times I felt like she allowed Melody and Ben to use her like a door mat. Ben, well he just frustrated the hell out of me. He never struck me as a grieving widower, as his behavior towards Marni was so selfish and self serving at times; for most of the story, I didn't think that he deserved her. Now with Noah, I must admit that I felt that many of his reactions and responses were realistic and understandable. I mean really, standing in his shoes, I don't know that I could have tolerated many of the events that transpired either. What was also true to form is the indelible mark of DW's style; the clever double entendre of carefully chosen songs for the chapter titles, the POV from each character so beautifully illustrated, and the push and pull of emotions, in this tug of war of love. I honestly didn't know how this one was going to end up or how I even wanted it to conclude, but like you DW, I am a sucker for romance in the end. I still have to admit, that in the end, I'm still was not crazy about neither Ben or Noah, but I was so glad to see Marni happy, as she had suffered and sacrificed enough. Throughout her journey, I kept asking myself what would I have done in Marni's situation, which was hard to say; but one thing I would have loved to have seen was how Melody's parents reacted to the chain of events. OMG! DW, you are a sheer talent, and I look forward of more to come!

DW has sucked me into another book and made me cry and laugh, along with the characters. The writing is very detailed, as always—you feel as if you are at the scene she is describing. Whether she's describing the inside of a house or the food they are eating. The story was told in 3 POV's—Marni's, Ben's, & Noah's. This book was so emotional, I was crying and screaming along with Marni whether in tears or anger! The book picked up right where “Unfinished Melody” left off. You see flashbacks from the past to where they were now. As I read more about their past, it just made me dislike Melody and Ben more and more.Marni, being the selfless person she is, always doing what's right for everyone else, but never what's good for Marni. Melody & Ben took advantage of that and just walked all over her. They used her to get what they wanted and then pushed her aside when they were done. Kind of like a toy. After Melody died, Ben, being the selfish person that he was, still took advantage of her kindness and generosity. Never once did he think about Marni's happiness, Ben just wanted her to stay in the comfortable arrangement they created for raising Ali. Whereas, Noah just wanted Marni to move on with their life, get married and have a family of their own. I honestly don't think I could have put up with the circumstances that Noah was under, his girlfriend/fiancée living with and raising another man's child? His feelings of being left out and being the third wheel were completed validated.I finished this book in 1 day, (although it took me forever to write this review) I couldn't put the book down. At one point, I really and truly didn't know how it was going to end and I didn't want it to either. Of course I won't spoil it for you, but you're definitely going to need a lot of “ME TIME” to read this. I did it in one sitting (6 hours) with no phones, TV, or people to bother me either. READ ON!!

By misty lee hebert this book is a unique and startling tale and I admired the bravery and endurance displayed by the family throughout the events. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down, and each chapter was interesting as the ‘entity’ evolved. I don’t want to spoil the story but it does leave you with some very interesting questions. The identity of the ghostly being is open to interpretation, and I like the fact that the family did not try impose their views upon the reader. This story was made all the more interesting by the fact the author is a Demonologist. He is open and honest, and I was shocked by the escalation of events that are very interesting. I admit parts of this story frightened me and truly make you think. All in all a great story, which I would highly recommend to anyone, interested in the paranormal.

The Dwelling embellished upon Joy's book from a different point of view and shares events that happened personally to Jereme or he witnessed as the paranormal investigator. This book entails the emotional struggle Jereme experienced as he stood beside the family during their chilling ordeal. I was impressed by the author's sincere honesty regarding the situation and by his bravery for not turning his back on the family. Great read!! This story belongs on the silver screen. Where's James Wan??

By Suzanne Martin I have always been a fan of Monique Stubbs Hall, a woman who is the epitome of Ladihood!!! As I have adopted teenage sisters from Ethiopia, I have tried to teach them "The Art of Being A Lady," so when I read this easy-to-read pocket purse book, I was thrilled! You know, children never listen to their mother, so when they read this, it reinforces everything I have tried to teach them in the short 4-1/2 years I have been their mother. Thank you, Monique, for writing this book which embodies everything I believe about being a "lady."

Pentecost This should be on the required reading list for every mother or "mom" out there. If we had more young ladies and moms going through this material together, we'd have more empowered ladies in our society (and fewer "hoochies). The author's writing style is entertaining and informative. While it may be a quick initial read, the material beckons you to return for further reading and digestion. It is the kind of book that is designed to be read out loud, together with a teen or pre-teen - and mom won't look like a square reading it.

By Noelle I like the color/illustrations of these books (they have several out there- including Octonauts and the Adelie Penguins, Octonauts and the Whitetip Shark among others) but I'm not a big fan of how skinny and flimsy the books are. I am afraid my two and a half year old son will rip it since he usually wants to be the one holding the book. If you are getting these for an older kid, then they should be fine and the books do match up well with the shows which is nice. But for a younger child, they may end up getting ruined. The price is low enough though so you can always get a replacement if needed which is what we'll do if the time comes.

This is good because this is an episode that my son and daughter are very familiar with and have watched multiple times. So as my 7 year old reads it to my 3 year old, she has confidence to read a story she is familiar with and he is familiar enough with the story to not get lost.We have purchased two Octonauts books so far, and my kids absolutely love them. I supsect we will be getting more.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The pictures are large and fun to see By Amazon Customer The pictures are large and fun to see. The books contain some interesting facts about the whale shark and the last page contains some more detailed information about whale sharks (in lieu of the "creature report" for fans of the show). The story tracks the show pretty closely and this has been a frequently requested book from my toddler.

By Teresa R I was skeptical at first with the concept of the storybox book and with such a simple book...but my little one (under 1) LOVESSSS it. He loves dogs, but on top of that, the graduating length of pages with little tabs make it so easy for him to turn the pages to look at the pictures. He gravitates toward it when he sees it on his bookshelf! Not only that, but it is helping my toddler (2.5) learn to count objects. While he can say his numbers, he is learning what they mean and he enjoys counting the different animals.

Featuring a series of multi-cultural babies you'll find this is a cool book to share with your child before taking his/her evening bath. Not only will this get the child in the mood but it provides the opportunity to practice turning pages and lifting the flaps which will enhance the youngster's dexterity. The full page illustrations are also very appealing to small children.

I bought this book specifically because it doesn't say "no" on every page like some Karen Katz flipbooks - I was a little disappointed to find that one page does say the word "no," as I don't want the first word my daughter hears when she opens the flap to be "no." But this is a minor problem, since some of her other books have that word on literally every page.
