Aliens Attack! When science camp buddies Kevin, Warner, Tara, and TJ summon alien life to earth, they quickly find out that not all extraterrestrials come in peace. Can they stop an alien takeover and save the world in time to win the Invention Convention? John Kloepfer, author of the popular Zombie Chasers books, has done it again. Galaxy's Most Wanted is full of sidesplitting descriptions; a fast-paced, silly plot; a cast of diverse and endearing characters; and a slew of creepy-crawly aliens oozing off the page. With out-of-this-world black-and-white illustrations by Nick Edwards throughout, the first book in this new series is going to blast off!
Meet the Characters:
- Kevin: Science genius. Physics, biology, chemistry, you name it, Kevin can do it. He's the brains of the operation, leader of the crew.
- Warner Reed: Kevin's best friend and resident cool dude. He's the guy to see if you've got a 2 a.m. junk food craving—but you'll pay top dollar for his top secret stash.
- Tara Swift: Not only is Tara supersmart and great at building things out of next to nothing, she's also in an all-girl punk band and the best drummer in the universe. (It's true—just ask her.)
- TJ Boyd: Computer problems? He's your man. TJ's a regular computer-programming prodigy. He's not much of a talker, though. Word around the campfire is that he damaged his voice box in a botched robotics experiment.

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—This is a suspenseful science-fiction adventure that will keep readers glued to the pages. The fast-paced story chronicles how Kevin, Warner, TJ, and Tara create a device to communicate with aliens to win the science-camp-invention convention. Excitement abounds when Mim, a friendly purple alien, crash-lands and becomes fast friends with the group after receiving their message. But when intergalactic bounty hunters begin touching down at science camp and hunting down Mim, things take a turn for the worst. Mim isn't really the last of his kind and is hiding on Earth; he's a world-destroying fugitive. Kevin, Warner, TJ, and Tara grow as a team and as friends throughout the story as they work to stop a terrible end for Earth. The accompanying illustrations add to the quirky nature of the story and reluctant readers will gravitate to its style. Libraries with built-in fans of Kloepfer will want to purchase, but it is also a good addition for collections in need of more science fiction or reluctant reader choices.—Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI

Fun and funny sci-fi By Sunny Sewing Honeybee Galaxy's Most Wanted stars four characters (Kevin, Tara, Warner, and TJ) who are staying at a camp for smart kids. The camp focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math. Of the four, Kevin is slightly the main character. In the story, they really want to win a contest, but their nemesis Alexander and his team have created a hovercraft, so they know their invention will have to be something really good. Kevin's group assembles a machine, using an idea found in comic books. The machine can contact alien life, supposedly. And it does! On their very first try, they discover Mim, a cute little purple alien who loves to eat spiders and candy. They can't wait to show off their invention and Mim at the Invention Convention. They're sure to win! Just as an aside, I appreciated how the story wasn't the typical one where no one can find out about the alien. The kids are eager to show him and their invention off. Anyway, when the Invention Convention comes around, where's Mim? Why is he being so dodgy? The cartoonish illustrations are fun and really add to the story. That being said, at times they're significantly different from what is written in the text. I could give a lot of examples, but I'll just give a couple. On page 48 it says the alien (Mim) has "boneless, hairless arms." On the two-page spread, page 49 shows him with furry arms. A telepathy helmet is supposed to have a visor (page 104), but it's shown without it. There are other instances of this, so I'd just hope that in future books they try to match the two better. As someone who doesn't like it when an individual book in a series doesn't have a full story arc, I'd say this one has a good standard story arc with a rising action and conclusion, with the conclusion still being an exciting setup for the next book in the series. That being said, whatever you do, don't read what the next book is about in the back of this book before you're finished (as I unfortunately did). It contains a major spoiler. I wouldn't have seen it coming and feel I missed out a little by looking ahead.

After a trip to see a very popular movie, also with Galaxy in the title, my 8y/o is on a completely all consuming scifi kick. Enter Galaxy's most wanted. The cover art is engaging, and definitely caught his attention. The story line is fun, with lot's of action. Not overly complicated, but it has him rolling with laughter. It's written by John Kloepfer of Zombie Chaser fame, which we already have all of and love.He seriously read it in about two sittings, and promptly started to reread it! That to me is a winner of a book!

It's a very fun, enjoyable read, especially for kids who like science/math/technology and/or are a little bit on the nerdy side. It tells the story of 5 friends who are competing with the rich camp bullies to win the science fair at camp - they decide to build a device from a comic book and accidentally end up summoning a dangerous alien to Earth. There are a lot of great elements; enough gross-out humor to keep kids ages 8-12 entertained, silly jokes, comic-style drawings, and a lot of fun hijinx. It's a little derivative in spots, but it's a kids' book, and I wouldn't subtract a star for that. From a parental standpoint, there are many good things to discuss with your kids: handling bullies, unfair situations, is winning everything, continuing to try even when you despair about the outcome, what do you do when an action to take to mean well turns out to have negative repercussions, and friendship. But then the book turns out to be a cliffhanger. As a parent, I find this extremely annoying, because it means that my kid will be pestering me to buy the next in the series. I like the book and would definitely be more willing to do that if it wasn't essentially forced upon me. I'd be especially loathe to do that if the next book ALSO ended in a cliffhanger. My son has a really difficult time with uncertain events and will be asking me "what do you think happened" until the next book does get written.
