In this beautiful book full of colorful, full page illustrations that look like a soft, watercolor with minimal details like a white birch tree and and animal or two a bedtime story takes on a whole new feel.The sentence on the page asks you to rub an owls head, tap the sky beside the tree, blink your eyes, and more. This is a wonderful, gentle, loving way to put a child to sleep and I believe children and parents will look forward to reading this nightly.It's as if you are saying goodbye to the world around you for the night followed by a black page that just says Shhhhhh and the last, a start to a whole new, glorious day.What we love:The illustrations. Nice subdued, minimal, whimsical, adorable. There are no stimulating pictures to wake tired minds up.The instructions provide easy listening skills that make for subtle interactions so your little one feels they are contributing to the storytelling.Dream like passages and illustrations ease the mind into rest mode with the gradual change from daytime to nighttime.We believe this will quickly become a family tradition that you and your little one will enjoy before bed.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Magical! By J.Prather I think if I could purchase only one bedtime story for my toddler or preschooler it would be Touch The Brightest Star. This is a sweet, relaxing, feel good introduction to the night time world that will make any young reader feel ready for bed, and probably their parents as well! This book features many of the same sort of interactive elements that were present in Tap the Magic Tree, however this time, the palette is softer, the movements are broader and more comforting, and the overall feel is one of muted charm.Kids will get to wave good-bye to the sun and fill the sky with stars. They will pat the head of a deer, and trace the big and little dippers with their fingers. Who can resist the instruction to rub an owl on his head? The command to breathe deeply and "Nod your head if you feel sleepy" intro a totally black two page spread accompanied by a simple line of text: "Shhhh." The book ends with the promise that "When you open your eyes again....the magic of the day begins."This book will find its best audience at bedtime, however I look forward to trying it out for a toddler bedtime themed story time. The simple text, and the smooth read aloud flow only add to the magic, and I feel that anytime you see a book that invites a reader to swipe the page to fill it with stars and touch the fireflies to light the sky, the book world has scored a victory over those interactive apps. Touch The Brightest Star is not only an enthusiastic recommend, it also joins my list of best picture books of the year.

Each rhyming two page spread progressively takes the reader from sunset to sunrise. Readers are encouraged to participate physically with the book. In the beginning, you are asked to "wave good-bye" to the sun. Fireflies show up to be pressed and light up the sky. Create a breeze by blowing and pat a deer that is wandering by. Touch the sky and a star appears. Find the brightest star and make a wish. Trace the Big and Little Dippers with your finger and rub an owl's head before sending them off to bed. Now close your eyes because you are getting sleepy too.Touch the Brightest Star is a great way to cap the day with a toddler. The interactivity of the book will be a big hit. Just be prepared to do everything in order and don't you dare skip a step. Your toddler will call you on the carpet. The illustrations are beautiful and will lead to discussions about animals and the stars. Information in the back matter will further illuminate those discussions.This book is an excellent companion to Matheson's Tap the Magic Tree. I will warn you that you may need to buy two copies because one of them will be loved to pieces.
