"This book provides a practical, doable, and-most importantly-effective approach for helping struggling kids do better." -Dr. Christine Carter, Author of Raising Happiness and The Sweet Spot  Parenting is a wonderful and challenging job, and managing negative behavior is one of the most difficult parts. Many parents find themselves running out of ideas when it comes to helping their kids develop maturity and self-control, and this is where Better Behavior becomes invaluable.      This book is not just about behavior, though, it's also about strengthening relationships. With equal focus on behavioral guidance and emotional attunement, Better Behavior holds the unique position of blending aspects of positive parenting with behavior modification techniques to help parents hold authority while also creating emotional connection. This balanced approach is the recipe for creating lasting behavioral change. It also promotes mutual respect and a desire for cooperation between parents and kids, which prevents many negative behaviors from occurring in the first place.      Written by Noah Kempler, a successful child and family psychotherapist, published author, and parent educator, Better Behavior provides a complete set of strategies and advice to help both parents and kids develop the skills needed to get along well. Key concepts include:

  • Helping kids develop the 5 core skills that create emotional and behavioral maturity: Understanding Feelings, Communication, Flexibility, Respect, and Problem-Solving.
  • Helping parents practice (and balance) the two arms of parenting: Empathy and Authority.
  • Using Empathy to create connected, cooperative and strong family relationships.
  • Balancing Empathy with clear, effective and consistent Authority to help eliminate negative behavior.
  • Understanding how critical factors such as: temperament (both parent and child), parenting skills, couple-care and self-care impact family life.
  • Illuminating behind-the-scenes family dynamics such as: structure, communication, boundaries, and family roles that together contribute to both parents' and kids' behavior patterns.
  • Helping boost self-esteem, self-confidence and resilience for kids.
The principles in this book have proven effective in helping children with a wide range of issues, including: oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, anxiety, social skills, low empathy, impulsivity, negative mood/attitude, sibling conflict, low self-esteem, and more. Presented in an engaging and easy to use format, Better Behavior comes complete with real-life examples and practical tips for creating harmonious family and social relationships. All types of families, with kids of all ages, have benefited from these ideas-and you can too. Get started making family life better now.

Review "This is a clearly written book that will help parents improve both their relationships with their children, and their children's behavior. I highly recommend it, especially for parents of younger kids who want to become more proactive than reactive, and are in the process of building stronger family and social relationships. "  -Richard Goldwasser M.D. Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist, Mill Valley, CA"This book is a powerful tool for parents of all types of children. Kempler provides specific steps and strategies to tackle challenging behaviors in a clear, concise, and easy-to-read format. The content is relevant to managing parenting challenges, large and small, and paves the way to deeper bonds between parent and child."  -Leigh Burkey, OTR/L, Co-founder/director Ready Set GO Therapy, Inc."This book provides a brilliant integration of evidence-based parenting strategies with a practical explanation of the role of emotions, temperament, and attachment in building positive family relationships."-Barbara Easterlin, Ph.D., Assistant Clinical Professor, UC Berkeley Department of Psychology "In over fifteen years of working in education I have read dozens of books written about the development and behavior of kids. This is the most accessible book that I have read on the subject. It is perfect for anyone who wants to better understand and connect with children."  -Thaddeus Reichley, Head of Lower School, Mark Day School  "This book is long overdue. If children came with an instruction manual they might have asked Noah to write it."  -Allen Berger, Ph.D., Clinical Director of the California Institute of Gestalt Experiential Therapy and author of Love Secrets--Revealed and other books

The chapter on the temperament profile alone is enough to make the reams of pages from all the other books, over all of the years, have been worthwhile..to finally land here. Noah has a very easy way about his presentation, the way he communicates. Like he is just sitting in your living room having a conversation with you. I find this book super accessible, very do-able (finally some actual action steps 1-2-3), and very respectful of the intricacies of parenting and of all of our personal experiences. I really feel like Noah loves what he does and it seems like the experience of what he is preaching is ingrained in him to such a level that it is effortlessly passed on to those of us lucky enough to be holding his book. I hope this book gets out there into the hands of every parent and educator who is struggling or knows someone who is. It would be a different world out there if children were treated with the quality of respect this book suggests, and if parents felt they had the tools to bridge the gap. Excellent read. Worth it!

It breaks down so many of the challenges into easy to understand components and gives clear parenting paths to help resolve issues. I really loved the insightfulness and pragmatic nature of this book. As a parent of three kids I really connected with this book and would recommend it to any parents, grand parents, or even professionals that work with kids. Really beautifully written!

As a parent of three children (ages 9 through 13), I found this book incredibly helpful. Noah Kempler's discussion of the various temperament profiles that children possess and the parenting styles best suited to each profile was illuminating. He offered practical, effective solutions to the varied needs of our children. The book was also well-designed with the table of contents and summaries at the end of each chapter making it very easy to find the information most relevant to you. Our family relationships have definitely improved because of this book.

HE COFFEE CABIN by Steven R. Pawley Is it possible to fall in love in one evening with a complete stranger? Ian Parker is about to find out. Ian is the proprietor of a successful local coffee house, in a suburb of Detroit. He wasn't expecting to fall head over heels in love with the beautiful, petite blonde that graced his presence, the weekend before Christmas, but he did. And how! When Nixie Davenport drove up to The Coffee Cabin on a Friday night, in a stolen car, she had no idea what kind of evening she was in for. The Coffee Cabin picks up where Alley Girl left off, only now Dalen Reese is part owner of The Coffee Cabin, along with his best friend, Ian. The evening is full of comedy, thanks to a revolving cast of characters that include waitresses Hemma and Sharona, and Ian’s nephew Tommy. With a group of regular customers and an evening filled with holiday spirit, Nixie finds herself in an atmosphere that keeps her drinking coffee well into the night. Chemistry burns and sparks fly between Ian and Nixie as the night winds down and the sun begins to rise. But the budding romance comes to an abrupt halt when the unexpected happens. Did Ian fall in love too quickly? Has Nixie’s mysterious past come back to haunt her? Will the two love birds ever see each other again? Can the strength of their new love hold their relationship together or will Ian watch Nixie walk out the door of The Coffee Cabin and out of his life for good?

Actually, I can count the number of books that I have read, just for the pleasure of reading, on one hand. This book, and Alley Girl were written by my long time friend Steve Pawley. I will admit that I purchased Alley Girl to support his passion of writing, and will say that I have not yet read it. (Sorry Steve!) I read The Coffee Cabin because I may have been lured or even tricked into reading it by the author himself. He told me that he included a funny story of ours (that we still laugh about today) into this book. Well, his tricked worked, I am now looking forward to reading Alley Girl and future books that he will add to The McCatty Chronicles. Thank you for reintroducing the pleasure of reading a book, getting me involved into a story and actually have me looking forward to reading more.

I was held by the book from beginning to the end in fact I read the book in two days because I couldn't put it down. I usually don't read a lot of fiction but Pawley"s writing style and ability to hold you in the moment as if you where really apart of the story he's telling will leave you craving more. This truly is the best book I've read since Ally Girl and I'm a very avid reader being disabled. I give this book 5 stars a must read for anyone.

The Rome Express (Xist Classics), by Arthur Griffiths

Review "A mysterious murder on a flying express train, a wily Italian, a charming woman caught in the meshes of circumstantial evidence, a chivalrous Englishman, and a police force with a keen nose for the wrong clue, are the ingredients from which Major Griffiths has concocted a clever, up-to-date detective story. The book is bright and spirited, with rapid action, and consistent development which brings the story to a logical and dramatic ending."

About the Author Major Arthur Griffiths (1838-1908) was born at an Indian garrison post, a descendent of a long line of military men. After serving as a Second Lieutenant during the Crimean War his regiment was posted to Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also served for a period at Gibraltar before retiring from the military to join the civil service where he held the post of Inspector of Prisons. He wrote numerous books including "Mysteries of Police and Crime", "The Chronicles of Newgate", "The Passenger from Calais", and "The Rome Express."

Charming sleeping car murder mystery of 1907 By Patto This little book was written in an era when train travel was truly luxurious for the well to do. And class lines were distinctly drawn. As the beautiful countess in the book says, "I do not allow my maid to wear colors."The countess is a central figure. We can't be sure if she's involved in the murder – or as innocent as her luminous eyes proclaim. There is no delay in presenting the reader with a body. By page two, a man is found stabbed and beaten in his sleeping car on the Rome Express. Most of the plot concerns the investigation.Since the train is passing through France when the murder takes place, the Paris police are involved. There's a definite feeling that French justice is bound by fewer rules than English justice, and the passengers are terrified to be at the mercy of these peremptory policemen. It's fun to observe the French Chief of Detectives, an emotional little man, interrogating the various passengers and getting alternately hoodwinked and cranked up.If the book has a hero, it's General Collingham, a tall imposing man with both a romantic streak and sharp powers of observation. The author too was a military man, and he imbues this middle-aged soldier with many likable qualities.Arthur Griffiths is not an especially brilliant writer, but he does a good job of describing a pivotal scene in the grisly Paris Morgue, which at that period was actually a tourist attraction! This is not my favorite vintage mystery, but I enjoyed it. The Resurrected Press edition is well produced and enhanced by a brief but informative introduction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not bad at all By Emma It's rather like reading a Hercule Poirot adventure, and I only rate something 5 stars when it is perfect. I enjoyed reading The Rome Express a great deal. I had no problems with dated language or usage, and the only issue I found was the author's belittling of the French detectives. I will look favorably on Arthur Griffiths' work when looking for reading material in the future.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Mildly Amusing Piece Of Period Fluff By propertius A formulaic murder mystery that its only charm is in the anachronistic phrases and expressions. The plot is vary predictable and the characters are totally one dimensional. However, if you want to get an impression of how the Victorian public viewed its heroes, then it is worth the time spent on it. If you like happy endings then so much the better but rest assured this is just pulp fiction and of only passing interest.

The Giddy Death of the Gays & the Strange Demise of Straights, by Redfern Jon Barrett

Review 'An oddball and one-of-a-kind romantic comedy' - Lambda Literary 'Love conquers all, especially such trivial things as monogamy and sexual orientation, in this polyamorous romance...a sprightlier comedy of modern manners.' - Kirkus Reviews 'An engaging and thought-provoking read. It's a story about breaking free of restrictions -- relationship conventions, geographical place, traditional gender identity.' - Out in Print 'Redfern Jon Barrett's second novel is a fantastic ride through the lives of these Swansea residents.' - GLBT Roundtable of the American Library Association 'It takes real skill to make this reader identify with a straight woman, a straight man, a drag queen, a lesbian, and their fluctuating identities, all sometimes within a single chapter. Most importantly, it made me examine my own identities and question the strictures that I have built around them.'  - MyGayToronto.com

Queer life in all its forms By Mike Mantin 'The Giddy Death of the Gays and the Strange Demise of Straights' is about queer life in a drab town, and features within its pages a violent homophobic attack, a white pride rally and a torched nightclub. But it's a testament to Redfern Jon Barrett's vibrant writing that the overall message is one of love, hope and happiness. The novel introduces several young characters each with their own perspectives on getting by, ranging from stressed-out postgrads to a manic queer perfume counter assistant whose boredom and frustration get relieved first on unwitting customers, then through his own life adventures. They make friends, fall in love and fall out, and these bonds tangle up and strangle any conventional definition of what a relationship 'really' is. At the heart of these is a deep, non-sexual relationship between two heterosexual men, and Barrett's writing devotes as much seriousness and passion to this bond as any other in the book.Witty and readable, 'Giddy Death' has something genuinely new to say and drives it through the mouths of its wonderful characters. Maybe sometimes the world around you can seem grim, but it's all about the people you're with.

Barrett manages to cram so much in: great story-lines, social commentary, complex characters and some interesting and thought-provoking ideas about the nature of love, relationships and sexual identity. There are some beautifully expressed moments of self-discovery which I found particularly moving, and I'm certain any reader who has found themselves at odds with mainstream conventions of gender, sexuality and relationships will be equally touched. I thoroughly recommend reading it!

Giddy Death is funny and vibrant, and despite its dark wit still manages to be hopeful and charming. The story follows a handful of disparate twenty-somethings living in a fading small town populated with drunks and racists, as they figure out how their relationships do (or should) work. The path they strike out on diverges from the expected, a quickly-changing situation moving from same-sex platonic love to a polyamorous trio. The strength of the characters carries you through the ups and downs, and I left them feeling quite uplifted.

Young, sharp-tongued Paula Masters, used to her cell phones, cherry lattes and designer jeans, suddenly finds herself thrust back in time to 1848 and the Oregon Trail. In modern life, she rebels against the curfews and restrictions of her day, seeing them as unfair hardships. But now in this alien world with its buffalo stampedes, wild Indians, and deadly pestilence, she is about to find out what real hardships are. To get home, she must set aside her Rude Girl persona and learn how to survive. On the trek, Paula meets young Daniel Langdon, hunter and part-time scout, and an infatuation quickly becomes a great passion. She realizes this is the love of her life and to get home she will have to leave him behind. With so few reviews, even though they were all five star reviews, I figured that every author has at least 5 friends willing to help garner sales for a friend's book. My initial assessment couldn't have been more wrong. This may well be the best time travel/historical novel I've ever read. From beginning to end, it kept me mesmerized. The ending was a twist I never foresaw, and immensely satisfying. Rarely do I find a male author who can write from a female point of view, and hit it dead on target. I'm sorry I could only give this book 5 stars.I'm also devastated that this is the only book available by Tom Reppert. Mr. Reppert, if you're reading this, I hope you're hard at work writing your next novel. I'll be the first in line to buy it. *Note* For those who find some spelling and punctuation errors distracting, I hope you will just let them go and not let it stop you from enjoying the fascinating journey you'll take while reading this book. Snarking over some editing errors is simply trite, when the story is this compelling. Bowing at your feet, Mr. Reppert. This was the best read of the year!

She is someone you want to follow and root for, especially with the desperate situation she finds herself in. The historical detail puts you right there in the past and the scenes set during the present are spot on in capturing the life of a too pampered teen.Though the main character is a sixteen year old girl, this novel, I would say, is not just for teens but for adults as well. I found it as good and engaging a read as I have had in years and would recommend it for anyone from high school age to adults. I will be reading it again.

Now after finishing it I realize at first it needed to be juvenile because it was about a 16 year old in the 2000's. Paula Masters is a regular teen in this time with her only concerns being all the social media, cell phones & being the leader of the "bad girls" in high school. Little does she know the fate which awaits her.She is throw back in time & finds herself as Libby, the daughter of Julia & Henry Quarles along with five siblings. At the beginning she thinks it's a punishment thought up by her Mother for all of her misbehavior & trouble making in school. Maybe she's in a "tough love" situation. As time goes on there are several things that happen that dispute this theory & Libby, aka Paula, is faced with difficulties she hasn't even imagined before. As I read this book I thought of different ways I would end it were I writing it. Believe me, I didn't even come close.I have read many time travel books & I have to rate this as number #1 on my list. It's a book that after you finish you want to start it all over again because it was so good. I hope Tom Reppert will write more because I would buy them without hesitation. Also, I recommend another book similar to this one entitled "Wagons To The Past" by Jean Hackensmith. Unfortunately it isn't in Kindle yet but it is very, very good.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the old west & with the special twist of time travel woven in.

This one is especially readable and extremely well organized. It doesn't bog down in details about theory, but there is enough explanation to make it interesting. The activities suggested for couples aren't burdensome, and make perfect sense. I'm going to recommend it to all my clients and to colleagues who have expressed interest in Imago relationship counseling. If your relationship is in trouble, the guidance in this book should really help.

The book is well-written, easy to understand, thorough, and offers complete direction to make your relationships better. One of the unique features I liked about this book is the ability I had to skip around between all the chapters. This allowed me to easily review what I had learned. It also allows me the freedom to use the chapters with the clients I am working with. This book is just so easy to read and follow. I highly recommend it. Dr. Sharon Myer

By popular demand, the 100th Who Was...? subject is Steve Irwin!Steve Irwin did not have a typical childhood. Born in Melbourne, Australia, on February 22, 1962, he was raised on the wildlife park his parents owned. He cared for the animals and especially loved reptiles--he got a python for his sixth birthday! At nine years old, Steve was already helping his father wrestle small crocodiles. He became a crocodile trapper after graduating high school, catching the creatures before dangerous poachers could. Steve met his wife, Terri, at his family's park, and instead of a honeymoon, the pair filmed a wildlife documentary that led to the creation of the well-known series The Crocodile Hunter. Tragically, Steve was killed on September 4, 2006 while filming a documentary when a stingray attacked, piercing his heart. He was forty-four years old. However, his life's work obviously still strikes a chord with kids who voted him the winner of the 100th Who Was...? title.

This particular book was the 100th title created in this series. The 10 year old reports: "it was a good book all around and I learned a lot about crocodiles, and how Steve Irwin spent his life". The order was easy, came within a few days and was an excellent reading level for a 10 year old. Highly recommended.

Best PDF Ebook Things Grak Hates, by Peter J Story

Grak hates things. Lots of things. And with a peculiar intensity, too.

Grak's contempt is so strong, in fact, that it often leaves his fellow tribesmen bewildered. And when attempting to describe his personality, they find themselves in need of words with greater nuance. "Neurotic" is typically used. "Sociopath" and "narcissist" are also common terms. The most popular descriptor, however, is "pathological."

Grak, on the other hand, sees his situation in a rather different light. He finds his behavior "necessary" and "selfless," or even "benevolent" when his mood is just so. Most often, though, he simply attributes his nature to "being human."

But of all the things Grak despises, his antipathy for olives takes precedence. In his efforts to be rid of this nuisance, he gets his first taste of power and ignites a series of events with troubling consequences. Unwilling to give up his newfound influence, he sets about honing his only true talent: manipulation. But as his grip tightens, Grak's naively selfish exterior crumbles to reveal a dark and malicious evil....

In his debut work, author Peter J. Story brews a robust psychological satire infused with dry humor and a pinch of emotion. Set just prior to recorded history, Things Grak Hates chronicles the life of a bizarre nomad and his descent toward evil. Along the way, this unconventional and introspective allegory explores a variety of complex issues. Among them: power, politics, religion, redemption, the dissemination of ideas, and human nature itself.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Descent into Darkness By PJG "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Lord ActonLeaving behind all discussions with regard to intent, the Platonic concept of philosopher kings, or benevolent dictators, what remains are the all-too-unfortunate (and numerous) individuals whose characters are an unsavory amalgam of weakness of will, questionable morals, shaky ethics, narcissistic tendencies (i.e. "the ends always justify my means"), greed - or all of the above.Tragically, we know how events can transpire when the more "shaky" members of society grab some power with their acquisitive little hands. The course of human civilization abounds with a veritable legion of individuals who have taken power and corrupted it to serve their own ends; ranging from politicians (pick up any newspaper on any given day and you will be regaled and disgusted with their shenanigans), minor officials, and petty dictators, all the way up to a person who, through cold, canny acumen, manipulation, mendacity and intimidation, take over entire countries, committing crimes and evils against humanity that are almost impossible for an evolved individual to fathom. These themes are the structure around which Peter J. Story's novel is built. And, it should come as no surprise that we are not going to spend the next 300+ pages hearing about how kind and benevolent Grak is. So, make no mistake about it, by the end of this novel, I can tell you unequivocally:I hate Grak. No, not the novel. Just Grak. And so should you. If not, I hope you live in a galaxy far, far away. The novel has a rather innocuous beginning. We are introduced to Grak and the tribe of which he is a very unimportant member. This is a primitive society with a simple regard for each other. They follow the deer herds through the seasons and forage for the rest of their food (nuts, berries, etc.). They are industrious, content and happy.Well, except for Grak. Grak is never industrious and he is seldom content and happy. He harbors petty resentments against most of the tribe because they seem to be able to do - well, everything - better than he. No matter the job, his results (in hunting, carpentry, sewing, etc.) are mediocre at best. He is a paranoid little gnome of a man who thinks everyone in the tribe - except for his friend Doran - looks down on him and makes fun of him behind his back.Grak's trajectory to dictatorship begins, as many such journeys, very small and rather humorously. His trigger? He does not like olives. Actually he hates them, not only because of the taste, but also because of the way they make his mouth pucker - which provokes some good-natured ribbing from his fellow tribe members, and which he definitely does not receive in a good-natured way. Since olives are a major food source for the tribe, it is difficult for him to avoid them. To rub salt into the wound, the tribe loves the very name, "olive", and so begins a tradition of naming their daughters Olive.Olives the food source, and females named Olive, are everywhere. What begins as a series of seemingly innocent lies (lying is an unknown concept in the tribe) told in order to avoid the hated food, is so surprisingly successful, it gets Grak's reptilian little brain clicking as he reflects upon his gratifying and effortless success (Grak is all about obtaining things with the least amount of effort). Inevitably, he begins to explore how to expand his methods, attacking and eliminating other things he hates (which becomes an ever-expanding list) and how to get what he wants (which is also an ever-expanding list).Up to this point, we are a little uncomfortable, but still laughing at this rather pathetic little guy who has no skills, and is smelly, awkward, boastful, and intensely hungry for approval. Someone who longs to possess a sense of importance and rank within the tribe. He wants their approval, their love, but, most importantly, their recognition and acknowledgment that he is special. It is in how Grak strategizes to attain his desires, and how those desires evolve into an insatiable appetite for obeyance and adulation, that Mr. Story weaves his disturbing tale.During the course of the novel we discover that, contrary to our initial impression, Grak does indeed possess an entire arsenal of innate talents. He is a master of deceitfulness, manipulation, intimidation, fear-mongering and quick-wittedness, combined with a complete lack of empathy, and a disturbingly cold-blooded, merciless approach when it comes to levying retribution for violations of his long lists of rules. All of this is as easy to him as breathing, and he comes to enjoy his ability to manipulate and persecute the tribe. For him, it's not only rewarding, it's fun.Mr. Story does an excellent job of developing Grak's mental pathology and escalating violent behavior as he gains more and more control over the tribe. We can easily equate Grak's dark, disturbing trajectory with other human monsters in our history, the endless rationalization for actions taken..."I wouldn't have to do these things if they didn't make it necessary"..."If they would only listen"..."If only they would stop questioning my authority and realize that I know what's best for them". As their behavior escalates, so does their paranoia, and they project their own dark tendencies upon the personalities of those with whom they surround themselves. Everyone becomes a foe, an enemy, someone not be trusted - because they themselves are not to be trusted. Liars and manipulators always assume that everyone else must be lying and manipulating as well. This is Mr. Story's first novel and the writing is generally tight and well-constructed. As I said, he absolutely nails the mental pathology of someone with narcissistic personality disorder and what can happen when such individuals are allowed free, unrestricted rein over others. We usually assume that a dictator's rise to power - be it over tribes, districts, cities, states, countries - are the result of some sudden coup. As Mr. Story reminds us, this not always the case. Instead, such takeovers can begin very small. These monstrous manipulators are like spiders spinning webs. The web oh-so-gradually becomes bigger and bigger, one small, sticky thread at a time. At first, just a few people are ensnared or enthralled...then more...then more. Until, everyone is caught in some way - either as a victim...or as an active enabler. However, as much as I appreciate Mr. Story's impressively successful portrayal of a cruel despot in the making, I found it was a book I more appreciated on a clinical, intellectual level than I actually enjoyed reading as a novel. Although Grak's behavior and hold over the tribe becomes increasingly dangerous; as much as he literally destroys the balance and harmony of the group, replacing it with fear and violence, it is difficult to appreciate how truly chilling these events are. This is partly because of the rather shallow, cartoony nature of the portrayals and events. I believe I read somewhere a suggestion that this would make a good graphic novel and I would agree. I think Mr. Story's tale would be well-served in that format. Perhaps this would be an interesting adaptation project he could pursue. The other weakness in the novel is that we spend almost the entire time riding around in Grak's head. We see others and experience events only through his eyes and how he perceives them. This is a problem. Narcissists have no empathy for others. Other people aren't really people to them, they are merely human tools that only have relevance in how they impact the narcissist. A narcissist feels about people like you "feel" about your refrigerator. It has importance to you, but you don't think about it at all unless it gives you trouble or it doesn't hold everything you want or makes too much noise. It's just something you use, something that serves your purpose. And that's it. If it gives you trouble and doesn't live up to your requirements, what happens? You become exasperated with it...and maybe you just get rid of it.Such is the perception of the narcissist.Because Mr. Story never personalizes the other tribe members so that we can perceive their reactions (pain, fear, confusion) to Grak from their viewpoint, because Grak feels no remorse at all for the pain and violence he wreaks upon the tribe members, because he has no empathy for others, because they are not really "real" to him, because of all these things, they never become real to us. Throughout the book, we never get to really know any of the tribe members. Sure, we know "of" them and we know some facts "about" them and some of the group dynamics, but again, only through Grak's perception - which is, of course, extremely narrow and limited in scope. As the book proceeds, it becomes more and more claustrophobic to be sitting in Grak's twisted little brain and it would have been nice to get a better, more personal sense of what the tribe is going through and how they are reacting to all the horrific events and disintegration of the group society. However, I will say that this viewpoint is very interesting and gripping when Grak eventually starts "drinking his own Kool-Aid" so to speak, and we get to experience firsthand his mental breakdown.I don't know whether or not this was the effect Mr. Story intended. Perhaps it was. Perhaps he wanted us only to experience the cold, calculating detachment of a fledgling bloody dictator and how they treat others as nothing more than game board pieces - moving them around to suit the will, and amusement, of the game player. If so, he was successful. But for me, the result is a little one-dimensional. I would have appreciated more depth and insight into someone besides Grak. The confined viewpoint made the book feel long to me. I think cutting about 75 pages of repetitious beatings and comedic gags - or replacing them with narratives that would have brought the other characters to life - would have maintained a better tension in the overall arc of Grak's reign. All in all, this is a good, solid first novel. Mr. Story writes well; he has very interesting ideas, easy, intelligent prose, and knows how to build and tell a story. I very much look forward to what he writes next.3.5 STARS

In many cases, we’ll take horrible acts almost in stride and simply chalk those acts up to the difficulties faced by the perpetrator. This seems to be the case with Grak. This neurotic nomad obviously had a rough go of things as a child. He didn’t really have any desirable skills, and even his best attempts (at building, crafting, etc.) were maligned and mocked. He experienced great loss, was the brunt of bullying, and dealt with tragedy. Thus, his community takes his rather awful nature in stride for a long time.Of course, everyone has a breaking point. Some arrive at that point sooner than others, but eventually, Grak does push everyone too far. However, the author poses a very intriguing dilemma. Obviously, a victim deserves care, comfort and sympathy. But when does sympathy give way to tolerance of awful behavior? When do we hold a victim culpable for their own actions?I don’t assume to know the answers here, but it’s certainly a topic worth exploring further – and Peter J Story does so quite well in this book. It was quite intriguing to see Grak’s gradual decline, and it was more interesting still to see how his descent was (in some ways) sped along by the well-meaning actions of those around him.I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I guess because it’s the sort of book that makes you think. The author introduced a number of interesting concepts – specifically those mentioned in the synopsis (power, politics, religion, redemption, etc.) – and they’re all woven together to create a very thought-provoking plot.I particularly liked the thread following the Doran character. To me, this thread seems to show how religion is often misused and abused by those in power. While that isn’t exactly an original concept, the way it starts in this story is interesting. Doran’s simple experience with something he can’t explain is questioned and dissected by those around him. Naturally, people turn to speculation, and this ultimately creates an explosion of art and culture (at least as much of an explosion as this simple tribe can muster). The author doesn’t directly talk about religion, and he doesn’t actually indicate his feelings for or against religion; however, he makes some very interesting points. I think that people throughout history have had experiences that cannot be explained or proved or validated. Others often jump to debunk or dismiss those experiences simply because they cannot be explained. If nothing else, the author brings that approach into question – and I think it’s a question worth asking.Full disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Richard Liveth Yet: A Historical Novel Set in the Present Day, by Joanne R Larner

About the Author Joanne Rosalie Larner had wanted to write a novel since she was a teenager and had started several but never completed any...until now. Her inspiration was the last Plantagenet King, Richard III. She became interested in him after seeing the documentary 'The King in the Car Park' on Channel 4 in February 2013. She eagerly read more, joined the Richard III Society and the rest, as they say (in this case, literally) is history.

By Liza-Jane Not the usual reading for me, I have to say I approached this tale with some trepidation. Thankfully my concerns were quickly dispelled as I was drawn into a world where fantastical things happen but are all perfectly believable. To explain King Richard appearing in the twenty-first century and not only coping, but positively embracing what he finds, sounds very outlandish indeed. It is anything but. The author cleverly weaves her way through the obvious obstacles of time-travel, taking the reader on a truly memorable journey of the impossible. The friendship between Rose and Richard evolves nicely as the book progresses - and always within believable parameters. The pair behave quite normally too, discussing, agreeing, discovering, laughing, disagreeing and even falling out over matters. Richard's curiosity about the very different world he now inhabits allows the reader to see our lives quite clearly through the eyes of another. The author has taken time and trouble here, showing our world with all its benefits and flaws. I especially love how Richard embraces the internet yet still chooses to drink beer with his breakfast. Though I am delighted to see him developing a taste for tea!The author has taken great care with Richard's character, showing him as genuine and caring, intelligent and compassionate but with enough faults and depth to allow us to see a real man.Clearly intended as a light-hearted look at the impossible, this tale ticks many boxes. it is warm and amusing, informative but relaxed yet still poignant and at times, quite sad.I would heartily recommend this tale as a refreshing change from the 'norm' in historical fiction and sincerely hope the author decides to write a sequel!

A lovely book that is also surprisingly educational By Rachel W I really enjoyed this book (and yes, it was a little bit of a guilty pleasure too being an avid Ricardian).Although time travel stories, in regards to historical characters, including Richard III, have been done before, this actually uses the situation to enable the reader to learn a lot about the life of Richard, touching upon some of the controversies of that time and adding plausible ideas of what may have happened, based on what is known of Richard's character from his time as Lord of the North and other actions recorded in contemporary sources. Also, although it covers the 'what is a car' or Richard's love of the marvelous invention, "the zipper", it does this in a way that adds interest to the story, without it becoming tedious. Can you imagine if you described every reaction a person transported in time had to modern life and its strangeness? It would take a book just to get the character through the first day.It is clear that a lot of research and care went into the story line, and the reason for the dilemma that the characters find themselves in keeps you guessing until the end. The story is also down to earth and quite intimate. The author has written about what she knows, and what she loves which just adds to its authenticity. So if you want a relaxing, enjoyable read, that will give you an overview of the history and character of Richard, a little romance, and also a touch of the paranormal, then I suggest this as a great read for you.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. at least make it good. This is not By anonymous1 If you are going to do time - travel, a now over-used trope for historical romances, at least make it good. This is not. There was nothing here to make me suspend my disbelief. Better done and more entertaining was: The Court of the Midnight King: A Dream of Richard III , by Freda Warrington , also available on Kindle. Having said that, with time and experience Ms. Larner may be able to re-do this book, fleshing out characters and adding elements that engage the reader better. If she ever does I look forward to re-reading this book.

One barn fire might be an accident, the Lancaster County Amish community believes. But two barns burning just weeks apart is suspicious. Sarah Beiler wants to protect her family, even though they don't like Matthew, her new boyfriend. Book 1 in Amish author, Lydia Byler's, series"Lancaster Burning."The Amish community of Lancaster is being terrorized by barn fires. David and Malinda Beiler's barn was the first to go. The clues are sparse, but Levi, the Beilers' oldest son, happened to be awake in the middle of the night and spotted a white vehicle driving past the house with its lights off. Sarah, David and Malinda's daughter, observes her parents' agony. Not only is she afraid, and wishing she could protect her parents, she's entranced by the flirtatious Matthew Stoltzfus. He's dating her friend, Rose, but when he tenderly bandages Sarah's hand after she burned it at the barn raising, she wonders who he's really interested in.When a second Amish barn burns for suspicious reasons, the Amish grow more restless. "We're too quiet too much of the time," a group of Amish men tell David Beiler, their minister. Seriously considering police protection, the increasingly tense community questions their traditional nonresistant approach to violence. Sarah now finds herself at odds with her mother over her choice of boyfriends and uncertain about how to respond to the attention of Lee, a newcomer to Lancaster. Not only that, she wonders if her dad is a wise enough leader as her community reels from within and without. Everyone is on edge as the losses mount and suspicions undo the usual steadiness of these people.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. I actually quit reading the book at one point after the burning of the first barn. However, I decided to give it another try, but found even more details of tragedy farther along in the story. Since I prefer books with happy outcomes, I did not enjoy the vivid portrayal of sorrow and grief in the story. I read this on my Kindle and was amazed when I got to the last page and was left hanging as to what happened. At first I thought I had skipped over the ending by accident. Not one I would recommend unless I had the second book in the series available to read immediately afterward.

A Joy to Read, Invaluable to Contemplate By Nameless Since I first read "Running Around (and Such)" by Linda Byler, I have come to measure all other books in the genre [Amish fiction/Amish romance] by her wise, thoughtful, and intriguing prose and dialogue. With each new novel, I find myself drawn deeper into her characters' worlds, and truly appreciate having found an author who writes with such honest and clean clarity.Byler's most recent series, "Lancaster Burning," may mislead readers who might skim or simply read the title of the first book, "Fire in the Night" into believing it's merely a suspense thriller with a hint of romance. However, both the book and the series title refer to much more than one might believe. The characters Byler writes of are nearly uniformly given depth, flaws, and realism; and, the story is a beautiful one in which immersing oneself is quite easy. Though typically not a fan of the suspense genre, and despite a number of tragic occurrences in this novel, I am already eagerly anticipating the next novel in the "Lancaster Burning" series.

I like the suspense factor and how the author built it up. Also, I know that some don't like how much time the author spends describing everything, but that's something I enjoy, especially knowing the author's authenticity of the information she presents. The author's Amish background adds a different flavor to her writing which I like. To me, it brings the story more to life.I found Fire in the Night suspenseful, romantic, funny, & sad. All of that makes a formula for a great story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
