Exciting! The overall mystery was good. Ms. Swan does a good job of hiding the true poisoner and slowly revealing the truth. The characters are refreshingly modern (not as stiff and boring as other P&P redux) but they do have a bit of a caricature feel to them (Mr. Collins is TOO stupid, Anne is TOO browbeaten and timid)This book would have been quite good if it weren't for the addition of the forensic toxicologist. Ms. Swan slips a few too many modern characteristics and terms into her books but they're usually easy to overlook. This one was so snort-worthy obvious that it took me right out of the story. While she tries to camouflage him as an 1805 gentleman science enthusiast, he's running around with a laboratory and tests to extract poisons from tea. I'm sure the science was getting its start at this historical period, but Mr. Darcy collecting samples of all the tea things was pretty far-fetched.Elizabeth and Darcy continue to sneak around, hide the truth from each other, get mad, flounce off and then get all hot and bothered for each other, just to begin the cycle all over again.

Anxious to see her friend, Charlotte, but not so much her unctuous cousin, Charlotte's new spouse, Elizabeth is pleasantly surprised to find that Darcy is visiting his aunt nearby. Lady Catherine, the ultimate, all-controlling shrew, who apparently has made multiple enemies with her unkind, overbearing ways is now in danger and her life appears to be at stake. Unfortunately, the list of suspects is nearly limitless in the surrounding area so Darcy and Elizabeth are back to work to clear a friend's reputation and find the guilty party. They uncautiously weed their way through the most obvious of candidates, stepping on toes including one another's. Lady Catherine has planned Darcy's betrothal to her daughter, Anne from the cradle, whose tender heart longs for another, while her mother threatens Elizabeth's family when she notices Darcy's growing attentiveness to her. What will Elizabeth say if Darcy overcomes his reticence long enough to pop the question. Even though she suspects her feelings for him have grown, can she endanger Jane's marital opportunities again to forward her own? The mystery is nicely interwoven as the readers grow to empathise with the characters and keep rooting for Darcy and Elizabeth to solve the current mystery while overcoming the odds to attaining their HEA. For everyone who complains that each novel in the series seems a bit short and unresolved, we were kindly educated by the author from the beginning how the series was formatted. Each story has a main focal mystery that is solved, leaving the outcome of Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship til the finale. I am committed to finishing the series as most readers will be. This is a well written sweet, romantic mystery for regency and Austen fans. Bravo Ms. Swan; bring on the final act!
