About the Author Bill Jenkins, aka GoodOldBill, was born in Ottawa in 1932. He attended Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, graduating in 1954 with a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics. At Queen’s he won a poetry prize worth $500 which helped him and three friends through a difficult year financially. He worked on the Avro Arrow project in Toronto and then started a 45 year career in computing, working as technical support, programmer, sales representative, manager, consultant to the Federal Government and computer guy at the local hospital. After retirement, he took real estate courses and sold residential real estate for five years. Bill is married to Claire, a former high school counsellor. Their three children are Bill, a lawyer in Calgary, Bruce, an electrician in Kingston and June, an ESL teacher in Switzerland. June started the project with the “Big Idea” of preparing and publishing stories for students. Bill Sr. has helped out by writing a few stories and by publishing stories written by students and a few friends.

Excellent resource for ESL teaching By JC My personal experience teaching English as a Second Language showed me that it was not always easy finding a good text to read with your students. It was even harder to find a text specially aimed at 10 year old children, with questions and exercises. Usually one would end up collecting Children's stories here and there and improvising a body of texts to use on the classroom. Then, you would have to create your own set of questions and answers to work with your class. There was also the additional challenge of finding something that could teach a little Canadian history along the way in an entertaining style. Then along came Tommy, Dick, Brains and Bobby and created a little detective club. They started solving cases and they had a funny way of naming them: their first mystery was called "The Case of the Ancient American" and they went on solving problems from the letter "A", up until the letter "D".While they were solving their problems and adventures, they were learning a whole bunch of Canadian facts... and so were we!The little detectives went on to solve their case on the Diligent Detectives and finished their first book of adventures. Currently we are waiting for "The Case of the Electrified Envoy", but no one, not even the original author, Bill Jenkins, can know what is awaiting the young investigators at letter "F".Why, you ask?Because it is a competition and you can be the celebrated author of "The case of the F... F..." and no, in case you are wondering, no bad words are allowed. In my personal opinion Bill is a wonderful Canadian, contributing to the immigration effort of this amazing country and making sure that every child who wants to learn English, has an affordable and entertaining text to do so.
