Mary Poppins, by Dr. P. L. Travers

Review "When Mary Poppins is about, her young charges can never tell where the real world merges into make-believe. Neither can the reader, and that is one of the hallmarks of good fantasy."--The New York Times

About the Author

P. L. Travers (1899-1996) was a drama critic, travel essayist, reviewer, lecturer, and the creator of Mary Poppins. Ms. Travers wrote several other books for adults and children, but it is for the character of Mary Poppins that she is best remembered.

Pickering I knew from the movie Saving Mr. Banks that a personality overhaul was given to Mary Poppins when Disney adapted this book into a film. She's all sweetness and light in the film, considerably more hard edged in the book. She's rather vain on page as well. I suppose I'd be vain too if I could fit furniture into a suitcase and fly by umbrella. I learned from Wikipedia that the reason so much that happens in the movie is not in the book is because there are 8 Mary Poppins books and the movie is based on events taken from the first four, plus some stuff added by Disney. I can't say that I loved this classic that spawned the much more charming big screen version. I'm giving 3 stars rather than 2 because without the books, starting with this one, there is no movie.

Travers, the Banks family hires a nanny whose name is Mary Poppins, to watch over their crazy children, Jane, Michael and their newborn siblings, John and Barbara. Mary Poppins leads these children on many adventures. One day, on Mary’s time off she visits Bert, the matchmaker, who makes matches and draws artwork with chalk. They jump in a painting together. Jane, Michael and Mary go to see Mary’s uncle, Mr. Wiggs. Whenever his birthday falls on a Friday, he will float in the air if he laughs. The children also learn not to judge things by how they look when they help Andrew, a dog who is not very happy. Mary tells the story of the Red Cow, a cow who danced for a week. Mary and the children also purchase gingerbread from a very odd and very old lady. John and Barbara talk to the wind, the sun, and a starling and try to remember the language that they speak, but when they turn one they forget it. Jane and Michael even go to the zoo at night on Mary’s birthday. They go Christmas shopping and see a star, which came down from the sky to buy Christmas presents for her sisters. Throughout the book the rambunctious children, Jane and Michael, learn to behave because of Mary Poppins. Whatever the adventure, Mary Poppins is sure to make you laugh. Mary Poppins is a fantastic novel filled with joy. I really enjoyed Mary Poppins. Each chapter is very funny and will make you laugh. P.L. Travers describes everything so thoroughly; you can picture it in your head. The characters she writes about are very interesting and enjoyable. They will make you want to read the book again and again. Mary Poppins is a good book that will fill you with glee!

The children that live there are Jane, Michael, John, and Barbara. Their parents never seemed to find a good nanny for them, at least not until Mary Poppins came! One rather windy day, she descended from the sky using her umbrella and the wind to travel to their house. She performs many magical things, from changing the flavor of medicine to traveling around the world with a compass. The children also get to meet some of her odd friends, like Ms. Corry, the old lady who eats herself, her very happy uncle who floats around on the ceiling, and Maia, the energetic star. A lot of strange things happen too. For example, talking to wild animals that are friendly, having birthday parties at the zoo, and translating a dog’s language to his owner. They have a wonderful adventure together, and I hope that you can be part of it too!I liked this novel because it is very magical and a lot of weird things happen. I am very glad that the children made that other nanny leave, because if they didn’t, Mary Poppins never would’ve come! I also liked how Mary Poppins is so full of herself, and always needs a mirror in sight. It was a really great adventure and I really enjoyed reading it.By MH

By This Kid Reviews Books Synopsis- Platypus Detective Rick Zengo doesn’t know what to think of the new addition to the detective squad. Or that she’s now partnered with HIS partner! But when Frank Pandini JR, candidate for mayor of Kalamazoo City, almost gets hit by a flying squirrel, Zengo gets assigned to be a second eye for Pandini. But something nutty is going on in Kalamazoo City, and it looks like the Platypus Police Squad will need all hands on deck to crack this case! What I Thought- Mr. Krosoczka has written another fun kids’ book, starring our favorite crime-stopping platypi. It’s awesome how he writes what could be an intense, middle-grade/young-adult story into a graphic-novel-like early chapterbook/middle-grade for kids. The book is completely appropriate for younger readers. Boomerangs are the weapon of choice for the police force, and a night club is known for its root beer floats. The characters’ personalities are spot-on, and they create a sense of normality for the reader to connect with (if you can call an animal-driven city “normal”). I like Mr. Krosoczka’s black-and-white illustrations. They make the story that much more fun to read! I really like this book series!*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

We read together, taking turns with each paragraph, and she was engaged in the story, and even wanted to draw pictures about it when we were through. It's the perfect length, and I was very pleased with the language-it wasn't too easy, providing a few challenges, but it wasn't, by contrast, too hard for her. It is an adorable story, told in a lively, bright voice and it carries with it a nicely constructed lesson about trying your best, even if you don't win in the end. All around well done.

I quickly became engaged in this book because I related to Amanda in a number of ways and found its descriptions of freshman life in the dorms and the social scene in college and fraternities, in particular, to be an accurate portrayal of the experiences I had as a college freshman. Amanda is a very likable character because of her good heart, her loyalty, and her smarts. I related to her insecurities, her love life frustrations, her anxiety about doing well in school, as well as her need to work out tensions through exercise. The story was interesting and the characters were well-developed; I could definitely picture the various characters in my mind and felt that I had a good understanding of them. The writing style is what I call "comfortable," which means that I forget I am reading and can just relax into the story. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the Being Me series.

Putting you in the life of a college girl and the experiences she goes through and the emotions and traumas involved with those experiences. The relationships she has with her roommate, suite mate, old friends, new friends, new loves, ex boyfriends, sisters, brother in-law, parents and even just acquaintances has you so engrossed that you are wanting to cry, scream, laugh and love right along with Amanda. She is a character that will pull you in and hold you tight and make you want to continue on her life journey with her. Get ready to be pulled into a great novel that will leave you wanting the next book to come out yesterday!

Brought back so many memories of navigating that first semester of college. From the beginning, you are swept into Amanda's college experience and the friendships she develops. You feel her joy, her pain, her confusion and root for her until the end. It is one of those books you can't put down and never want to end. I'm so looking forward to reading the next book in the Being Me series.

Eloise Foley, known to her friends as Weezie, has been through the divorce from hell. Her ex-husband Tal (aka Talmadge Evans III) was awarded their house in Savannah's historic district, the house that Weezie had spent years painstakingly restoring to its original splendor. Weezie was awarded the two-bedroom carriage house on the same property. Each was sure the other would sell. But Tal has taken up residence in the main house with his new girlfriend Caroline DeSantos (who never seems to perspire or have a hair out of place during the wilting Savannah summer), Weezie is running her antiques business out back, and neither will budge. She's also got a few loony relatives and a hunky former boyfriend to contend with, and if that's not enough, dirty deals aplenty wherever she turns.

In this town, where everybody knows everybody's business, something's got to give, and something does....

Beginning with a brave (or is it brave-faced?) heroine who tarts up very effectively and wrapping up several subplots with snorting good justice all around, this book kept me turning its pages long after bedtime.I hope Mary Kay Andrews isn't all written out after this book, because she blew tons of great lines and a lot of knowledge about Southern antiques. She introduces some interesting ideas about artifacts in Southern furnishings and shares just enough information about how reproductions, like certain women, can be tarted up to look almost authentic. It's enough to make a girl want to clutch her pocketbook real protectively the next time an Empire table seems to call her name!Avoid this book, please, if you are easily offended, because you will find plenty of bait here. There's at least a couple of scarlet women, a "non-traditional" couple that is pretty much closeted, some less-than-totally-serious engagement with an older woman's alcoholism, and some send-ups of stereotypes that will send their marks whining for rebuttal.I don't care. And if you are looking for a thoroughly entertaining romp outside the ordinary lives of most of us, neither should you. You'll enjoy the characters, their stories (including the big mystery at the book's center), and the writer's delicious descriptions and one-liners.

By rebelmomof2 This book had me hooked from page one to the last page ~~ it's witty, quick and brash and at the same time, it is bittersweet. It's a wonderful Southern lit book ~~ and it's one of my favorites. This is the first time I have ever heard of Mary Kay Andrews and I am hooked.Weezie Foley lands in the midst of a murder-scandal accidentally while looking for a bathroom at an estate sale ~~ and how she gets out of it is a hilarious tale in itself. Then revelations about family members, ex-husband, new boyfriend and friends spice up the entire book with their tales ~~ this book keeps you on its toes and never lets up till the last page is turned! If you like mystery with a good dash of romance ~~ this book is for you. Not only is it fun ~~ it is hilarious in some places ~~ these Southerners have a great sarcasm and it shows. Nothing seems to stop them except extreme humidity ~~ and an icy gin and tonic can cure that. So grab that bottle of suntan lotion and head for the lake or the nearest shade and enjoy! Don't forget your iced tea ~~ this book will leave you with a hankering for a drink!4-25-03

26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. The Picker, The Chef, and The Junior League By sweetmolly Edgar Best Novel nominee, Mary Kay Andrews (aka Kathy Hogan Trocheck) delivers the goods in this lighthearted novel of tidy murder, great cooking, and the down and dirty side of the antique business. Not only is "Savannah Blues" living breathing, Savannah, it's a given this story could happen nowhere else. Our heroine, Weezie, wins the prize for most unusual occupation; she is a picker, a trade only known in the antique business. She "finds" items from kitsch to Empire sideboards and sells them to antique dealers. She hits the flea markets, yard and estate sales, and even does a little dumpster diving in the course of a business day. Weezie is a bad-luck divorcee. In the settlement she got the carriage house in the back yard and one-half of the closed garden while her ex got the lovingly restored (by Weezie) historic townhouse. To make her misery complete, the ex has installed the "other woman," the beauteous Susan, in the townhouse and even gave her Weezie's slot in the garage for her jazzy sports car.Weezie is illegally "previewing" an estate sale at a run down plantation in the dead of night, opens a closet and out falls the body of her rival Susan. Weezie is the prime suspect, and her friends rally round: Uncle James, an in-the-closet gay lawyer who was formerly a priest, best friend BeBe (pronounced Bay Bay); Daniel, master chef and incipient lover; and Merijoy, rich, social, dedicated Preservationist and jaw-droppingly efficient young mother.Even the smallest characters are quirky and unexpected. Weezie's highly proper mother starts her day with half-and-half (iced tea and Four Roses). Andrews' dialogue is dead-on Savannah-speak, and I kept thinking the characters from "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" were going to join the fun at any moment. Weezie has to be the most nonchalant murder suspect in the annals of crime. She assumes (I presume) justice will prevail and goes about her business, obtaining an unusual antique cupboard and shooting herself in the foot in the romance department. This is a romp and a character study; so much so that long stretches go by when no one even thinks about the murder mystery. Andrews pours on too much in the last quarter solving the murder and righting the wrongs to the point the reader is confused. I felt like I had been called in from recess to study for the final. All in all a delightful book. Andrews and Savannah can take a well-deserved curtsy.-sweetmolly-... Reviewer

Wodehouse triumphant, back with another quintessential comedy!

Edmund Biffen Christopher is set to receive his Godfather's legacy-if he manages to avoid being arrested. Lord Tilbury wants Biffen to fall foul of the law so that he will receive the legacy himself, and enlists his henchman to hasten Biffen's fall. Only Wodehouse could conjure a happy ending where everyone gets exactly what's coming to them. When Will ends up in possession of the key to a train car containing priceless treasures, he becomes the target of sinister figures from his past. In order to survive, Will must join a traveling circus, enlisting the aid of Mr. Dorian, the ringmaster and leader of the troupe, and Maren, a girl his age who is an expert escape artist. With villains fast on their heels, can Will and Maren reach Will’s father and save The Boundless before someone winds up dead? “Canadian railway history, fantasy, a flutter of romance—and a thoughtful examination of social injustice—collide in this entertaining swashbuckler from the author of Printz Honor–winning Airborne” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Children’s Book of the Month, April 2014: Mirroring a slice of actual railway history, the Boundless is a train of epic proportion, an eccentric visionary’s dream made real by the sweat and lives of many. The book's protagonist, Will Everett, is a young man who yearns for adventure, finding it first when he participates in securing the final spike of the Boundless’ tracks and years later on her inaugural voyage. By the time the train leaves the station, Will’s family has literally gone from rags to riches, and he finds himself responsible for keeping a special boxcar’s treasures safe from thieves who will stop at nothing—even murder. Along with his friend Maren, an escape artist with the traveling circus onboard, Will realizes untapped bravery, loyalty, and friendship that help him face a multitude of dangers. The Boundless successfully mixes history, folklore, and imagination into a sweeping adventure story that is a delight to read.---Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—All aboard for an exciting tale of steam-powered automatons, a bloodthirsty sasquatch, colorful circuses, and magical paintings. Aspiring artist Will Everett knows he's not cut out to follow in the footsteps of his railroad manager father, but his pampered life leaves little opportunity for adventure. Then he boards The Boundless, the world's largest and most luxurious train. After acquiring the key to the railway owner's funeral car, Will is running for his life, pursued by deadly enemies who will do anything to possess the car's valuable contents. He is rescued by Mr. Dorian, ringmaster of the famed Zircus Dante, and an escape artist called The Miraculous Maren. These two performers, however, have their own secret agenda for helping Will. As The Boundless thunders toward its destination, Will must decide who to trust, if anyone. Along the way, Will is on the adventure of a lifetime. With its imaginative plot, cast of colorful, well-rounded characters, and nonstop action, Oppel's latest is a delight to read from the first page right through the satisfying conclusion. Take note: This book will be popular!—Alissa J. Bach, Oxford Public Library, MI

From Booklist *Starred Review* Will’s quiet life changes when he travels westward and takes part in the golden-spike ceremony completing the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885. True, he’s nearly killed by an avalanche and a sasquatch, but he also meets Maren, the young circus performer he can’t forget. Three years later, Will joins his father for the inaugural journey of the Boundless, a mammoth train hauling 947 cars and 6,495 passengers across the continent. Along the way, Will learns that two groups plan to steal priceless treasures (including the golden spike) from a vaultlike mausoleum car. Hunted by a villainous gang, Will must rely on his wits, his courage, and his friends, including Maren and her circus community. Best known for his Printz Honor Book, Airborn (2004), and the Silverwing series, Oppel offers a grand adventure story that is firmly rooted in Canadian history but which is never limited by mere recorded facts. This vividly imagined, present-tense narrative features a series of heart-stopping action scenes involving dozens of memorable characters, many of them introduced in the 1885 segment and revealing themselves more fully aboard the Boundless. An epic journey novel with a distinctive setting, a powerful sense of adventure, and just a whiff of steampunk. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Oppel’s Silverwings trilogy has sold over a million copies worldwide and Airborn received a Printz Honor. Expect hoards of passengers aboard The Boundless. Grades 4-7. --Carolyn Phelan

Great adventure, but not for eight-year-olds By Lynn The publisher's target audience is on the young side--as a middle school librarian, I'd say The Boundless is appropriate for well-adjusted, grounded-in-reality, middle schoolers, not eight-year-olds. It has themes of fairness, independence and courage, all of which I encourage in children. There have been reviews that say the book had sex in it. Not that I remember. There's blushing and bare shoulders, both of which are appropriate for middle school students. Did I miss something? I recall the main characters don't have anything more going on than a crush---again appropriate for middle school children. There was a review that mentioned the word fecking. Fecking is considered a mild swear word in Ireland. It's a minced oath, much like dang or heck. Yes, it is a minced oath for "the f-word," but this provides parents a good opportunity to have a meaningful discussion with their middle school child about *their* family values--what is appropriate for them to say---and the difference between what you read and what you say or do.Now--looking at the book for children aged 11-13----- by the time kids get into middle school, many use words like hell---even if their parents don't know about it. And even if they don't use the words themselves, books that do not use appropriately authentic language are largely left unread. Children can spot phony a mile away. "Golly, Gee Willikers!" (Just to show how language evolves, gee was a minced oath at one time)But once again, in my opinion the publisher set the target audience too young. The book is a well written middle school book, incorporating Canadian history and folklore into a train adventure that both boys and girls can enjoy.

Stade Because my son was learning through exploring facets of Stellaluna I found Silverwing. We both enjoyed reading Silverwing because of it's innovation and action. Then, I checked out Boundless. Why do adults that aim their writing at children INSIST on using foul language? In this book Mr. Oppel even introduces the "f-word" even though he spells it f e c k i n g using many instances of h e l l, not as the place. Also he introduces sex and prostitution. All in a children's book. Where are the editors? Does no other responsible adult read these books with kids in mind? Or is teaching these things to kids OK?

Belle I was a little skeptical when I picked up this book about whether I would like it, yet after three or so pages I was hooked. I could not put the book down.Boundless is the story of a young man whose father goes from rags to riches after saving a railroad baron from certain death in an avalanche. After the baron's death, the father continues the baron's dream of building the world's longest train and that is where our story truly begins. The Boundless, the world's longest train car procession, is making its maiden voyage across Canada (sea to sea as the book puts it). Will, our young man, has just quarreled with his father after telling him he wishes to go to art school and not become a business man. In the midst of the first stop, Will witnesses a murder for the key to the funeral car (for the train carries the body of a railroad baron in a funeral car, which is rumored to be loaded with gold, jewels and other riches, much like a pharaoh's tomb). What follows is an elaborate plot involving circus folk, an evil brakeman who is out to kill Will and anyone else standing in his way of those riches and a constant struggle of Will's conscience as to his purpose in life. I could not put the book down and finished it in a day.Everyone loves a good train robbery story as evidence by its ever presence in movies and books as well as folklore and this book is no exception. The plot is expertly woven, the characters splendidly detailed, you hate the bad people and cheer for the good ones. The story never bogs down in its 336 pages. This is a wonderful tale for all audiences, though I do think younger children under the audience range of 8 might find it scary since there is some violence. All in all a terrific read.

I used to be just like you. Yeah, YOU. I went to work, hung out with my friends, partied on the weekends that extended to the week days. I played video games, watched horror movies, and hated my neighbor. Until the zombies came. Suddenly these things don't seem so bad. Hi, my name is Mike and I kill zombies. Check out our story as my friends and I hit the road in the pursuit of blood, guts, and survival in the post apocalyptic world of Civil War zombie reenactors, hookers out for revenge, and pigs who just don't hear the word 'no.' Things get pretty weird.

By shohanan This is an amazing, out of the box, apocalyptical story, told from the first person with such ferocity that you would think the author was there. There are so many nuances that both allow and force the story to evolve as you read. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a little twist in their zombie stories with a well thought out plot and story. I cannot wait until the next one is released!!!

One Family, by George Shannon

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—This deceptively simple concept book celebrates family and community, while also offering young readers a chance to practice counting. Each spread features an increasing number of people who form a family. From babies in buggies to white-haired elders holding hands, families stretch across generations and races. Young listeners will recognize familiar activities such as strolling through the zoo, doing laundry, or baking cookies. The brief text mentions objects to be counted, and children can practice again with a spread that features all the items from 1 to 10. A final view of the city streets brings together many of the people featured in earlier pages to celebrate "One is one and everyone./ One earth. One world./ One family." Gomez's rich colors and clean design make the book a good choice for small group sharing, but she also includes many details to be appreciated in solo rereadings. Even the fly leaves are carefully designed. In the front, individual portraits of people and animals gaze ahead as they hang on the wall. In the back, the characters lean from their frames to converse with one another, while some of the pets escape entirely. VERDICT Thoughtful text and great design make this counting book a top choice for most libraries.—Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University Library, Mankato

Review *"A playful counting book also acts as a celebration of family and human diversity . . . A visually striking, engaging picture book that sends the message that everyone counts." - "Kirkus Reviews," STARRED REVIEWThe breadth of diversity on display is refreshing: families include multigenerational homes, interracial marriage, neighboring households, children who identically resemble their parents and those who don't.--Booklist

By finder jan What a lovely counting book - which is really a book showing some of the many diverse configurations that can make up a family. My kids loved the illustrations. Together we tried to think of families we knew that were similar to the ones depicted.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Counting but not counting By intrepid _librarian Interesting book that is a counting book with no numerals. Strange that it seems to work but the main focus is on the collection of varied people who make up the one family: various ages - intergenerational, people of color, etc. Children reading this book will count the items in the pictures which mostly adhere to the number being discussed, but sometimes not. ALlogether an interesting book for reasons that have nothing to do with counting.

In this magisterial novel's first volume, which runs up to the 1950s, we meet prehistoric monkeys who spread a peculiar virus, a Native American shaman whose sexual explorations mutate into occult visions, and early English settlers who live as loving same-sex couples only to fall victim to the forces of bigotry. George Washington and Alexander Hamilton revel in unexpected intimacies, and John Wilkes Booth's motives for assassinating Lincoln are thoroughly revised. In the twentieth century, a religious sect tries to exterminate homosexuals, and the AIDS virus begins to spread. Against all this, Kramer sets the tender story of a middle-class family trying to get along in the darkest of times.

Review Breathtakingly well-written. And how could one not keep reading, no matter how endless, a book with a line such as 'You don't just drop a penis like Tibby's into the narrative and let it go'? (Kirkus (starred review))Kramer is a singular force, furious because he cares. He honestly confronts hard, unspoken truths and goes somewhere with them, which is a rare thing. (T Fleischmann Publishers Weekly (boxed, signature review))Larry Kramer is one of America's most valuable troublemakers. I hope he never lowers his voice. (Susan Sontag)Larry Kramer has been a prophet of psychic health and catastrophe among us a prophet unmatched for the accuracy of his omens and the reliability of his anathemas and remedies. (The American Academy of Arts and Letters)Larry Kramer's magnum opus (Elissa Schappel Vanity Fair)A work of sustained passion . . . Formidable. --(Dwight Garner The New York Times)

24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. April/May 2015 “…you don’t use the word like with that kind of book By Adam D. Dunn I don't understand how so many people can read this book and write a one-line review. The book is so long, and says so much, surely you felt something more??At one point I wrote: I'm 64% done with The American People: This is the time of the wade. Wade through, wade on, stop for a breath, go faster to get to the end sooner, go slower or stop, the wading through.Andrew Holleran, in an interview with Kramer in The Advocate, April/May 2015 “…you don’t use the word like with that kind of book. Stunned is the word. It was a roller coaster of a book. There were times when I was laughing out loud, there were times when I was putting the book down, there were times when I was, “yes yes yes,” there were times when I said, “Oh this is crazy.””I really agree with all this. There's a five-star review of this book on Amazon where the reviewer says he slogged through it, and that's the kind of book this is. It's not going to be easy. Fa**ots also wasn't easy and I remember slogging through that too, reminding myself that if you put one foot in front of the next eventually you will finish and I felt that often reading this. Holleran also mentions the short chapter lengths which help you get through the book and I found that too. It would say "2 minutes left in this chapter" on my Kindle and I'd think "I can do two minutes." You put enough of those together and you'll get back to an interesting part, or a coherent part, again. It's difficult to rate this book being that it's really only half a book, I need to see what's going to happen before I can fully decide. Many people have complained the book needs an editor, but it has had one. The book is 4000 pages long. You are getting 800 in part one and say another 800 in part two, that's 2400 pages cut. Kramer says after part two is published he plans to self-publish the remaining 2400 pages. I can't see anyone on earth reading that. There were times reading this book I lost sleep, times I was mad, times I put the book down, times I learned things and times I didn't. Fa**ots had some humor to make the medicine go down and this book needs a lot more of that. Kramer writes in the same satirical tone for this book but it's not a satire, it's a history and it doesn't always work. The names of people, Masturbatov for example, the letters written and answered to people that don't exist, chapter titles like “IANTHE ADAMS STRODE REPLIES TO DAME LADY HERMIA BLEDD-WRENCH’S INQUIRY”, these things don't help. Plus there's a couple points in the narrative that are so over-the-top crazy I don't even know what to say. The Rabbi who saves boy's foreskins to fertilize his garden then eats his sons 10 year-old foreskin out of a jar of formaldehyde while he burns down the house. What does one say to that? Again, this is not a book you can just say you like or not.Going through some quotes now, I felt the book often lost focus, and found the following statement at the beginning of the book:“I, Laurence David Kramer, in my country of death, write this history of the plague, and of The American People before and during this time of plague, and of our people who have died from this plague, and of who and what caused this plague.”Kramer much later says:“I cannot seem to let go of every grain of detail, for each at some moment seems so important that I must scoop it up and slither it into my own voluminous vomit-out. The world must know everything!”Well underline everything and put some butter on it. It's hard to say what is relevant in the book and what isn't as we don't know where the book is going, we've only got the first half. I would say the sections on the gayness of past American presidents is the weakest, this may tie in later to a homophobic culture suppressing the disease, the "underlying condition", but this book itself doesn't tie it in to anything. It seems to be put there simply because Tony Kushner refused to mention Lincoln's gayness in the movie he wrote, Kramer even mentions Kuchner by name in this book.I would agree, as Kramer says:“There are a lot of reasons why we continue to die in droves that have nothing to do with actual physical disease.”There is no evidence though that AIDS started in America, in fact there is evidence it didn't. The concept that the disease had evolved and has been around in some form longer than anyone thinks is interesting. The idea that the disease evolved and that people's actions helped it is I think the point of the book, but it's really not explored fully or well. So many side tangents to wade through it's often hard to see the forest for the trees.“Everyone has been infecting everyone else since the Garden of Eden. Of course we are all connected! Alas, it is up to us to figure out how and who. And few of us really want to sort all that out.”Kramer often himself acknowledges the impossibility of the scope of the book and the many side-steps he's taking:“Who is a**-feeding you all this manure? This is not history!”“OK, back to the proverbial grindstone in attempting to sort out who’s who and what’s what and who did what and when and why are we here today, if we are here today, if we are anywhere today. I must be of firmer faith that eventually we shall get ourselves somewhere!”“Where are your notes that would speed the narration of this horrid tragedy along while you keep clip-clopping around without a plan of action? At this rate we shall never get to The Underlying Condition!”While at the same time talking to and answering himself:“You continue to raise excellent questions, my dear old friend, Fred.”Kramer calls the book non-fiction but then makes up sources where they don't otherwise exist. I've often thought there should be a book on bathhouses in America, the Everhard in NYC was open more than 100 years, there has to be a story there! So when Kramer references the book “Norbert and Noreen Curlue, A Handbook to America’s Most Welcoming Bathhouses, 1990” I looked it up, doesn't exist. Some of the other references to Yale I looked up and they do exist, so how can you keep any of it straight? Also the book has many pseudonyms and it's almost impossible to keep them going in your mind as well. The book says “I Read in the Monument that Senator Vurd had 112 men fired for being homosexual.” So I Google Vurd, don't find him, and assume Vurd is a pseudonym for McCarthy. But then later the book says, “This was in 1949, not far from McCarthy and Vurd and Sam Sport and that gang.” Did I miss Vurd on my first search, is he made up, is he a combination of McCarthy and someone else, who knows.Add to this confusion Kramer's own agenda and hyperbole:“Henry Ford would destroy any place on earth as long as there was a Jew still living in it. The world will never know or believe this, that Henry Ford hates Jews even more than Hitler does.”More than Hitler. It becomes clear that this non-fiction history is not going to be easy, or like any that have come before. All this being said I liked how gay the book was, a line that I liked:“I notice that when I think about his pe*is my own pe*is feels warmer, as if it wants to meet a friend.”There's something here. The idea that AIDS evolved and was around earlier than we suspect. The concept of homophobia through the ages and how that relates to the spread of AIDS when it does eventually come out. The history of the study of disease in the United States, specifically sexually-transmitted diseases. There's also a lot of factors working against it, the view from Kramer's sometimes opaque lens and the fact that we only have half a story. I can't really form a final opinion until I see the rest.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It is not an easy read, not for a summer on the beach By Greg Rothman This is an important book. It's hard to say what kind of a book it is and it may require it's own genre. It's called a novel. It could not be called a history. Perhaps semi-historical fantasia is correct. It is not an easy read, not for a summer on the beach. It requires focus. It is at turns horrific, and at others hilarious. It is profound and heartfelt. And also disgusting and excremental. It is passionate and shows love for many of its characters. They say history is written by the victors, which the gays (nor the Jews) never were. So Kramer is filling in those huge missing pieces in his way. One often does not know what to believe is true, or partially true, or not true at all. I think every reader will come to their own conclusions about this, right or wrong but surely not indifferent. When asked in an interview "how can you be absolutely certain George Washington was gay", Kramer replied "How can you be absolutely certain he was not gay". So this is where we are left.I will say that I had a hard time finding my rhythm until about 75 pages in. But once you get beyond the midpoint or so, things begin to come together in a way that pushes you forward. I never thought I would say this about a book 775 pages in length, but it really did wrap up rather quickly toward the end. I am one who will be one of the first to read volume 2.I do understand the negative reviews. I would not expect everyone to "like" this book. It's long and difficult and requires a reader with an attention span. But regardless of like ability, the importance of the book stands out. I'm not sure how anyone would feel otherwise.
