Review "When Mary Poppins is about, her young charges can never tell where the real world merges into make-believe. Neither can the reader, and that is one of the hallmarks of good fantasy."--The New York Times

Pickering I knew from the movie Saving Mr. Banks that a personality overhaul was given to Mary Poppins when Disney adapted this book into a film. She's all sweetness and light in the film, considerably more hard edged in the book. She's rather vain on page as well. I suppose I'd be vain too if I could fit furniture into a suitcase and fly by umbrella. I learned from Wikipedia that the reason so much that happens in the movie is not in the book is because there are 8 Mary Poppins books and the movie is based on events taken from the first four, plus some stuff added by Disney. I can't say that I loved this classic that spawned the much more charming big screen version. I'm giving 3 stars rather than 2 because without the books, starting with this one, there is no movie.

Travers, the Banks family hires a nanny whose name is Mary Poppins, to watch over their crazy children, Jane, Michael and their newborn siblings, John and Barbara. Mary Poppins leads these children on many adventures. One day, on Mary’s time off she visits Bert, the matchmaker, who makes matches and draws artwork with chalk. They jump in a painting together. Jane, Michael and Mary go to see Mary’s uncle, Mr. Wiggs. Whenever his birthday falls on a Friday, he will float in the air if he laughs. The children also learn not to judge things by how they look when they help Andrew, a dog who is not very happy. Mary tells the story of the Red Cow, a cow who danced for a week. Mary and the children also purchase gingerbread from a very odd and very old lady. John and Barbara talk to the wind, the sun, and a starling and try to remember the language that they speak, but when they turn one they forget it. Jane and Michael even go to the zoo at night on Mary’s birthday. They go Christmas shopping and see a star, which came down from the sky to buy Christmas presents for her sisters. Throughout the book the rambunctious children, Jane and Michael, learn to behave because of Mary Poppins. Whatever the adventure, Mary Poppins is sure to make you laugh. Mary Poppins is a fantastic novel filled with joy. I really enjoyed Mary Poppins. Each chapter is very funny and will make you laugh. P.L. Travers describes everything so thoroughly; you can picture it in your head. The characters she writes about are very interesting and enjoyable. They will make you want to read the book again and again. Mary Poppins is a good book that will fill you with glee!

The children that live there are Jane, Michael, John, and Barbara. Their parents never seemed to find a good nanny for them, at least not until Mary Poppins came! One rather windy day, she descended from the sky using her umbrella and the wind to travel to their house. She performs many magical things, from changing the flavor of medicine to traveling around the world with a compass. The children also get to meet some of her odd friends, like Ms. Corry, the old lady who eats herself, her very happy uncle who floats around on the ceiling, and Maia, the energetic star. A lot of strange things happen too. For example, talking to wild animals that are friendly, having birthday parties at the zoo, and translating a dog’s language to his owner. They have a wonderful adventure together, and I hope that you can be part of it too!I liked this novel because it is very magical and a lot of weird things happen. I am very glad that the children made that other nanny leave, because if they didn’t, Mary Poppins never would’ve come! I also liked how Mary Poppins is so full of herself, and always needs a mirror in sight. It was a really great adventure and I really enjoyed reading it.By MH
