About the Author KAREN BENKE is the creator of two popular books on creative writing adventures, Rip the Page! and Leap Write In! (Roost Books)—as well as a poetry collection, Sister (Conflux Press). She handwrites a monthly snail-mail "Museletter," which reaches kids of all ages both nationally and internationally. She has taught with the California Poets in the Schools program for twenty-plus years and regularly leads Inspired Creativity Workshops for kids and adults at Book Passage Bookstore in Corte Madera, California, and in schools and libraries. With her husband, twelve-year-old son, and a cat named Clive, she lives north of the Golden Gate Bridge, where she prefers letters delivered to her physical mailbox, though she can be reached at her virtual one via www.karenbenke.com.

This inspiring book is filled with personal wisdom and prompts that invite: "What's the kindest thing you heard, overheard, saw or observed today?" My perspective shifts to the raked grass outside my window, my neighbor taking care with her garbage cans: my life is a letter of moments. Throughout the book, Benke has sprinkled "notes" that are "passed to us" from writers like Wendy Mass and Gary Snyder. Mass frames special letters because they remind her that they are "living, breathing things." This book brings me back to my father's handwritten notes and stick figures-- it sends me back to myself and my authentic, individual scrawl. Here, right now, is precious.

It is a collection of great tips, trivia and an encyclopedia of information about how to write letters, postcards or notes.In Write Back Soon, Karen Benke encourages the reader to “rip the page and leap write in!” She also includes interesting things such as: Send it in seventeen syllables: write a postcard as an American haiku Send a “to do list”: Write a letter to your grandma, aunt, or best friend and tell them everything you have to do. What you can send through the mail: An invaluable list of things to send, along with a note to include with it. (Some suggestions are interesting, such as a potato with a note “French fries or paper weight?”) Sixty-five opportunities to send more light: How to write encouraging notes for loved ones or random strangers to brighten their day Greetings and goodbyes: in case you don’t know how to start or end a letter Reminders, suggestions, good luck, advice: in case you need to write a note about any of these topics Kinds of correspondence, a list of states and abbreviations, and more!Write Back Soon is a fantastic guide about writing. It encourages people to stop texting (or find other ways to communicate in addition to texting). It teaches everything you need to know, including how to address envelopes. By Maureen Cary More than an homage to the disappearing art of letter writing, WRITE BACK SOON offers practical methods and techniques to help readers compose inspiring and entertaining letters and notes to friends, old and new, and family. Writing has always been a means to unlocking creativity. It's difficult to imagine texting or emailing having the same effect. Ms. Benke also reminds her readers that handwriting, too, is soon to be a lost art. For all of these reasons and more, parents and teachers may want to introduce the book at home or at school. The pleasures that come from receiving and sending notes and letters should not be lost!
