But underneath it all, God is faithful. He pursues us—“The Hound of Heaven” as English poet Francis Thompson called him.Jennifer Rodewald’s debut novel, Blue Columbine, has a lot of life’s mess in it, but even more Hound. Childhood friends, torn apart by families that moved in different directions, now find themselves, over a decade later, back together. But things have changed. Jamie Carson sees glimpses of the protective and playful Andy, but the grown-up lawyer, Andrew Harris is buried beneath a terrifying addiction—one he’s not willing to recognize. Jamie struggles with the balance of friendship and letting go, of offering encouragement but letting God transform. Andy struggles . . . period. That is, until the Hound catches up.Delicate. Humorous. And plumbing the depths of God’s redeeming power. Blue Columbine definitely fulfills Rodewald’s mission statement, “Words that edify. Jennifer Rodewald deals with hard issues in her debut novel, and does it with beautiful writing and memorable characters. I identified with the characters in Blue Columbine because, like Andy, my brother also has a problem with alcohol as well as drugs. Like Jaime, those around him are often hurt by his poor choices and the effects of altering substances. Jennifer Rodewald reminded me that God deals in life-changing redemption when we give our lives over to His hands. Even in all the mess of life, there is hope.

From the very beginning, I was rooting for him and shipping for him and Jamie the whole time. This book does not disappoint. Instead, it takes you through the emotional upheaval of loving someone with a problem you can't solve - and let's you witness the glory of the One who can. Highly recommend Blue Columbine, especially for those who have been through or are in the midst of the pain of addiction and need to see the hope that is available.
