From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Twin brother and sister Nick and Tesla Holt find themselves involved in a dual mystery: the disappearance of their parents who are abroad (supposedly) and the sabotage of their favorite comic book hero. To distract themselves from solving the first "grown-up mystery," the twins and their friends dive into action to save the job of a line producer who happens to be Demarco's aunt. With the help of movie aficionado Silas, and aspiring stuntman Demarco, the friends help to solve the mystery and weirdness on the set of The Stupefying Metalman. There's a smorgasbord of characters: Uncle Newt, Elisha and Monique (Demarco's sisters), Aunt Zoe, Mr and Mrs. Holt, all of the characters on the set of the movie, among others. All of these figures, many with shallow development, provide for a slow and confusing read. Thankfully, the main characters provide some balance and, refreshingly, all of the female protagonists, including Aunt Zoe, avoid negative gender stereotypes, proving themselves to be critical thinkers and leaders. Fans of cinematography and action movies will enjoy this series installment, which includes step-by-step instructions for creating movie props. VERDICT Readers who like the "Nick and Tesla" series, detailed mysteries, and learning how to make movie paraphernalia will enjoy this offering.—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

Combine it with a story to inspire creativity and you've got a winner. The siblings, Tesla and Nick have a good, strong relationship with the harassment you'd expect if you have a sibling along with love. Their friends have personality quirks. There are points where the characterizations seem a little 2 dimensional. There is humor though the entire book, some of it very base, that would have strongly appealed to my daughter when she was in that reading range. There is also a good feeling of looking behind the scenes of making a movie. Not the drama of the characters, but in the details and explanations. The mystery is laid out in a way that has clues available to follow. The projects combined with the story are things that could inspire kids to try making their own mini-movies- which is definitely a good thing. I do wish that it had described story boards but that's a personal preference because it helps with making up stories. The projects focus was effects and filming. It was easy to read, and it's a series that I have recommended to people in the past and will recommend again.

The newest installment of the series,"Nick and Tesla's Special Effects Spectacular"(book #5) continues this exciting blend of science and mystery. There are detailed drawings and directions for a number of gadgets that are created in the story. These projects range from a Super-Stable Camera-Steady Rig to a Superheroic Grappling Hook and Wrist Launcher...An easy recipe for Horrifyingly Horrible Alien Zomboid Makeup is also included. The dialogue between my daughter's favorite characters (DeMarco and his sisters Elisha and Monique) had her laughing out loud. She especially loves how fearful DeMarco is of Elisha. It is their Aunt Zoe who invites them with their mother (Ms. Davison) and friends (Nick,Tesla and Silas) to tour the set of a film that she is producing. They are thrilled to see their hero, Cash Ashkinos as he makes his first non "B movie." There is plenty of on-set drama and intrigue as more characters are introduced and the tension escalates. This book was a special treat for my daughter and I, who are more artistically than scientifically inclined. We found a good amount of "behind the scenes" information (including both proper terminology and insider slang) surrounding the process of making a feature film. The end of the story has a fun, campy feel, like a Scooby-Doo mystery...

Loved the strong sibling relationship By SBCincinnati This Nick and Tesla's book is a mixed bag. There are things I really like about the book and others that I do not. The story is very suited for its intended audience of 6th-8th graders.Pros:1. Siblings, Nick and Tesla, work together as a team. They honestly seem to like each other and appreciate the other's gift and talents. Sure, they tease each other occasionally and at times get annoyed, but most of the time they get along well.2. The instructions to build your own inventions that go along with what Nick and Tesla are building throughout the story. The advance copy of the book I received did not have all the projects included, but the instructions for the homemade steadicam and zombie make-up were pretty stinking cool. For the most part, minimal adult help is required(put sometimes necessary) for these projects.3. The authors seemed to have a thorough knowledge of life on a movie set, which added much to the value of the story.Cons:1. Writing style at times is slow and clunky. I could barely resist the urge to start circling all the "to be" verbs, which really slow down the pace of the writing (To be verbs include: am, is, was, were, have been).2. Nick and Tesla's parents apparently were kidnapped in a previous book. The siblings mention this on rare occasions. Seems like too big of an issue to be treated so minimally.3. All the kids in the book show little respect for authority or the adults in their lives. Probably typical for this age, but have I an issue with the consistency in which disrespect/disregard reared its ugly head. (The kids weren't nasty to adults, they just ignored their instructions.)
