Joy first meets the unfortunately named "Sunny Girl" at Dr. Gorgeous's office, after agreeing to take her sight unseen. The rebound relationship gets off to a rocky start as neither one is particularly impressed with the other, and as newly christened Cher demonstrates her lack of riding-in-the-car manners and ability to jump the fence without batting an eye, Joy starts to wonder what she's gotten herself into. What follows is the laugh out loud story of Joy and Cher, of a frighteningly clever dog without a social grace to her name and an owner who tries to keep up. It's also the story of a single woman struggling to survive after being "downsized" (don't you hate that term?), coping with premature grandmotherhood and strained relations with her daughter, and enduring the cat claws of corporate politics. There's pain but also personal growth and romance along the way. Throughout it all Cher is her constant companion, a demanding and often diabolical one to be sure but one always willing to lend an ear at the end of a bad day. It's well written and totally captivating, a wonderful read.

Tender, Sweet, & Moving By Sahara Bowser-Author Really, Cher is absolutely enjoyable. It is a fun story that takes readers inside the relationship of a woman and her dog--but not just any dog. Cher is a doggie-diva with an attitude who knows how to yank her owner's chain. She is an adorable little sweetheart who will capture your heart. A really enjoyable tale.

The book's main characters are Joy Bradford, a self-described "rotund single mom whose drug of choice is chocolate," and Cher, the stray dog Joy adopts at the behest of Dr. Gorgeous, her veterinarian. Cher, who according to Joy has quite the diva complex, sees her owner through the ups and downs of her life and career, or as Joy puts it, "from spinsterhood to grandchild to marriage." Along the way, at various times, Cher is a source of frustration, anger, comfort and friendship for Joy, serving as everything from confessor to confidant to competitor for the affections of Eddie, the man in Joy's life. The easy conversational tone that author Julian Coleman gives Joy immediately drew me into the narrative and allowed me to sympathize with her as she struggled to overcome obstacles ranging from being downsized at work to being temporarily estranged from her daughter, Zane. I found myself rooting for both Joy and Cher. Together, they make an unbeatable, if not always compatible, pair. You don't have to be a lover of dogs to enjoy this book. You just have to be a lover of good writing.
