[Read by Jonathan Cecil]In the bar-parlor of the Angler's Rest, a bucolic English pub, Mr. Mulliner tells his amazing tales, holding the assembled company of pints of stout and whiskies and splash in the palm of his expressive hand. Here you can discover what happened to the man who gave up smoking, share a frisson when the butler delivers something squishy on a silver salver (""Your serpent, Sir,"" said the voice of Simmons), and experience the dreadful unpleasantness at Bludleigh Court. Throughout, the Mulliner clan remains resourcefully in command in the most outlandish situations.

Review "It's dangerous to use the word genius to describe a writer, but I'll risk it with him" John Humphrys "For as long as I'm immersed in a P.G. Wodehouse book, it's possible to keep the real world at bay and live in a far, far nicer, funnier one where happy endings are the order of the day" Marian Keyes "Wodehouse always lifts your spirits, no matter how high they happen to be already" Lynne Truss "The incomparable and timeless genius - perfect for readers of all ages, shapes and sizes!" Kate Mosse "Not only the funniest English novelist who ever wrote but one of our finest stylists" Susan Hill
About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.
While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.Jonathan Cecil (1939 2011) was a vastly experienced actor, appearing at Shakespeare s Globe as well as in such West End productions as "The Importance of Being Earnest", "The Seagull", and "The Bed before Yesterday". He toured in "The Incomparable Max", "Twelfth Night", and "An Ideal Husband", while among his considerable television and film appearances were "The Rector s Wife", "Just William", "Murder Most Horrid", and "As You Like It".

Mr. Mulliner is a font of humor and great advice to the silly young male aristocrats of the early twentieth century. The humore is somehow never dated, and it will make the reader laugh out loud just as heartily now as it did when it was written. Mr. Mulliner is a character whose insights should never be missed!

Each short story is a hilarious anecdote about his nephews, nieces, cousins, uncles, etc etc and despite the shear volume of stories they never cease to feel fresh and funny.I am a huge fan of Wodehouse and though most people were introduced to Wodehouse via Jeeves and Bertie Wooster my first experience was Mr Mulliner. The Mulliner short stories truly are Wodehouse at his peak, and were written during the hey day of his popularity. I say this as someone who has read almost every story Wodehouse has written from the Picadilly Jim to Sunset at Blandings. The prose is excellent, the hyperbole magnificent. The stories told by Mr Mulliner concerning his various relatives are fast paced, witty, bright, and they never feel contrived or forced. In addition Wodehouse and his prose manage to evoke emotions, surprise, and amazement in a way not even the excellent Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie can replicate on screen. In fact despite the quality of the various screen adaptations of Wodehouse's work nothing can compare to Wodehouse's words. This particular collection contains my all time favorite short story "The Unpleasentness at Bludleigh Court". This is a tale of two sensitive poetic souls and the unholy influence of of the sportsmen at Bludleigh court. Summarized in the poetic lines "When life is dark and all is black, how sweet it is to pot a yak". In this story Wodehouse manages to satirize and parody both the poets of his day and the aristocratic sportsmen and country gentry.Even if you do not take the time to read every Mulliner short story you should definately jump in and read at least a few of the wonderful short stories as told by Mr Mulliner.

First Class Delight By Richard Liedholm The first thing to know is that this is Wodehouse: so if you have even read one of his books you already know about his beautiful use of language and the wonderful dialogue that he creates for all his characters. I suppose there are some that might sneer and say that if you have read one Wodehouse you have read them all. Well, yes, that's true in its way: he focused on comedy, the upper class, and a host of young lovers getting in and out of the wackiest situations. But as you go deeper and deeper into his library you will learn what amazing inventiveness the man had. And that brings us to Mr. Mulliner Speaking...This wonderful collection really soars for me. Many of the stories seemed like mini novels, so dense is the plot he created. As much as I enjoyed Meet Mr. Mulliner, which includes one of Wodehouse's major masterpieces: Honeysuckle Cottage, this second collection goes even further to make you laugh. And laugh I did! I won't delve on any single story here or give away any plot details; I just think that this collection is a delight from beginning to end, and it deserves the widest audience it can get. Don't let this one slip by. Give it a chance and I think you will find you were happy you did.
