An elderly tramp is found murdered on a roadside, the only clue being a square of cardboard tied to the victim's ragged overcoat with the word 'Three' written upon it. Then, a gentleman - the Chairman of the Imperial Cochineal Company - is shot while waiting in traffic in the back of a taxi. Next to his body is found another square of cardboard, this time inscribed with the word 'Four'. So begins The Silent Murders, a gripping, fast-paced tale of unexpected twists, momentous characters, and pernicious flair ... it must be an A. G. Macdonell crime classic. The Silent Murders was first published in 1929 at the height of crime fiction's popularity. It is one of several crime novels written by A. G. Macdonell under the pseudonym Neil Gordon.

About the Author A. G. Macdonell, (1895-1941) was a journalist and satirical novelist. Without doubt his best-known work was England Their England, but the success of this overshadows his other books, many of which were classics in their own way. The Autobiography of a Cad must surely rank as one of the funniest books ever written and Lords and Masters is a cutting and hard-hitting satire with frightening prescience, foreseeing the Second World War as inevitable. His American trip in 1934 is amusingly related in A Visit to America, but his other non-fiction is also powerful and beautifully written, with his highly-regarded Napoleon and his Marshals providing one of the best accounts of the Napoleonic Wars in one single volume. Macdonell also write crime and crime-thriller novels under the pseudonyms of Neil Gordon and John Cameron. These titles are included in the 16 books to be published by Fonthill in the Complete A. G. Macdonell Series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hard to get into By Leyla Not really sure about this book. Bit if a jumble or very clever, lots of thinking and false trails that seemed obvious but took a while for the main characters to get. With all the running around the story just ended. Nothing more very abruptly done.
