In this practical, eye-opening and action-oriented book, Nina Garcia explains how to use connection to raise well-behaved kids and strengthen your parent-child relationship. You’ll learn: • How to diffuse and prevent tantrums and outbursts • How to better communicate with your child • Practical advice on structuring your day around routines • The secret to starting your day off right with your child • How to parent calmly and not lose your temper • And so much more… Maybe you’re fed up with your child’s outbursts and wonder how many tantrums are too many. Or you want to address his behavior with empathy and patience rather than through punishment. Perhaps you want to lessen fighting as well as equip your child with the skills to prevent arguments in the first place. You’ve tried time-outs. Counting to three before they’re really in trouble. Maybe you’ve lost your temper. Except nothing is working, at least in the long run. You continue to butt heads—and you’re exhausted with having to deal with yet another day of disciplining. And here’s why: we’ve got this discipline thing all wrong. We assume discipline is about punishment, or we assume it’s what we need to take away from them to curb misbehavior. We mistakenly believe that the main purpose of discipline is to stop tantrums and outbursts at all costs, as quickly as possible. Let’s get to the real definition of discipline: discipline is teaching our kids. Because isn’t that what parenting really is? Your job is to arm them with the skills they need and would serve them well in the future so they grow into kind adults who can regulate emotions or empathize with others. They’ll be adults who treat others with respect and don’t expect the world to bow down to their wishes. The kind of person you’d want your child to eventually grow up to be. With each outburst comes the opportunity to help them develop these skills. They learn more about their feelings and appropriate ways to express them. A child who can articulate “mad” can identify that emotion and use techniques to convey frustration. So that next time, there won’t be a tantrum to get their point across but rather a more mature discussion or a different way to control their temper. And the best way to discipline is through connection. As ironic as it sounds, we need to connect with our kids when they’re acting up. The times when they’re most unpleasant are when they need us the most. Connection works to prevent outbursts as well as better handle them when they inevitably happen. This doesn’t mean you’ll be permissive. You still need to enforce limits and set boundaries. You won’t let your child continue to jump on the couch or color on the walls when he’s not allowed to. But you focus on what you want your child to learn from the incident rather than only making sure he doesn’t do it again. Because yes, it’s important your child stops coloring the walls. But it’s equally important for him to develop the skills to communicate and make better decisions. You don’t accept the behavior, but you are there to guide him through it. This book provides you with the tools you need to handle conflict as you see fit. What worked one day may not work the next. And what worked for your first child may be ineffective with your second. You don’t have to get it ”just right.” Parenting with Purpose is for parents who want to raise their children using intention and mindfulness. Best Parenting Book for Living Happily with a Toddler or Preschooler By MKS I read a LOT of parenting books and it’s not often that I find a book that I agree with completely. The author advocates a very gentle, respectful parenting philosophy and writes with an understanding, friendly tone. She speaks with wisdom about the best way to respond to your child in various situations, but also understands that as parents we don’t always act the way we intend in the heat of the moment. I also love that she is able to take into account individual differences between children. This book presents a ton of useful, actionable advice for preventing tantrums, dealing with meltdowns, and handling the aftermath effectively. My favorite parenting book which focuses on a similar connection-based parenting style is Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids by Laura Markham. Parenting with Purpose shares a number of similar suggestions, but specifically targets the advice towards mothers of young kids. Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids speaks generally about kids up to adolescence (through the preteen years), which means that the advice is not always directly applicable to a parent with a barely-rational toddler or short-tempered preschooler. Parenting with Purpose provides excellent advice for younger kids, especially between the ages of 2 and 6, based on a similar foundation of respect and understanding.Another area in which this book stands out is in the handling of incidences between siblings. The mother of 3 close-in-age kids, including twins, the author has plenty of experience overseeing disputes and preventing incidences of violence. Many parenting books give advice specifically for dealing with one child while neglecting the fact that many families need advice on situations involving multiple children. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has 2 or more kids in the toddler/preschool/kindergarten age range. (I have one of each.)Overall, this book is a quick, easy read, packed full of useful advice for parenting young children. Not only is there a lot of actionable suggestions for making day-to-day life run smoother, but the overarching philosophy of respect and kindness will motivate you to improve your relationship with your child long term.

I'm ashamed to admit, I lose my temper way too often than I should. There are times when I feel lost trying to navigate the responsibility of raising two decent humans. Nina's book felt like she was talking directly to me. I loved her suggestions of connecting, and empathizing with your child rather than using brute force or punishment methods like time-outs. Her approach is loving, direct, and sensible. There were so many relevant and helpful tips...including a list of 20 "actionable" items you can follow to help you become a better parent. I am so excited to implement some of these methods with my kids...Thank you Nina for sharing your wealth of experience and knowledge!!! Highly recommend this book to all parents or those thinking of becoming a parent!

Challenges parents to think "why" on many levels By Amazon Customer Nina is thoughtful, does her research, says something NEW about parenting, and keeps it real and practical in "Parenting with Purpose". While this book ends with 20 actionable items parents can start doing, this book isn't just a how-to. It gets to the heart of parenting. Two things, among many, that I learned from this book are (1) how to label my kids' emotions so that they can navigate this scary world of many emotions and (2) label the behavior, not the child. This truly is a great parenting book that motivated me to enact real change in my parenting style. I really do see my kids responding to me more positively. In turn, I feel better at the end of the day.
