"Meditation For Beginners is a unique book on meditation in the Kindle store. Since there is plenty of options for learning how to meditate on the market, I wanted to make sure this product was unique and brought something new to the table. The two unique parts of this book: #1-Chakra meditation. Most authors are probably too afraid to mention meditation techniques that are outside the norm and make sure it is not too 'out-there.' However, I have been testing chakra meditation for the past few months and noticed some great benefits from it that everyone should at least test out. #2- This book has a more lengthy talk on how meditation can effect mental health issues, but this book goes in greater length. I don't agree on buying all meditation books, but buy this one. This book is actually unique from other books in this market." - David, Sept '15

Since there is plenty of options for learning how to meditate on the market, I wanted to make sure this product was unique and brought something new to the table. The two unique parts of this book that identified are the following:-Chakra meditation. Most authors are probably too afraid to mention meditation techniques that are outside the norm and make sure it is not too 'out-there.' However, I have been testing chakra meditation for the past few months and noticed some great benefits from it that everyone should at least test out.-This book has a more lengthy talk on how meditation can aid in mental health issues, like depression and anxiety. Most other books speak very briefly and throw a few statistics on how meditation can effect mental health issues, but this book goes in greater length.-This isn't unique, but I liked that this book wrote on making meditating a habit as a major key to success with meditating.I did not like that the practical tips are a bit dull. None were any more insightful than what you could find from an online article.I don't agree on buying all meditation books, but buy this one. This book is actually unique from other books in this market.

By Rob Natiuk Even though this book is a short read, it is well-structured and covers the essentials of WHY MEDITATION and HOW TO MEDITATE. The author promises that her book will help "you learn how to meditate easily and quickly for integrating regular mediation into your life." That is as big promise. We know already that learning something new is usually easy to begin but harder to continue and perfect. I'm glad that this book is also motivational in that area.WHAT IS MEDITATION? A place of deep peace in your mind, yet alert. Good to-the-point overall teaching here.DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDITATION. Focused... mindfulness... effortless presence... Buddhist... Vipassana... Loving Kindness... Mantra... Yoga... Third Eye... and others. Good overview.MEDITATION BENEFITS AND BEST PRACTICES. If you tend to lose your motivation for meditation, just review these benefits; there are many of them. When to meditate? Early morning, before bed, short spaces throughout the day. You'll also be briefly introduced to your chakras and meridians. You don't have to know these specifics but knowing a little about them broadens my appreciation for meditation.

By tamanna I'm a high-stress guy, which is probably why I purchased this book.I started using the book on a daily basis about two weeks ago, and it has begun to have a very real effect on the quality of my life. It's a meditation program that really puts you into a state of deep relaxation. I'm strongly recommending this book to those even remotely interested in yoga or meditation.

** Reader Alert ** This book is a Lycan Short Story. As requested by some readers who wanted a little snack before bedtime but can’t seem to manage to put a book down until the end. It has approximately 11,000 words, and I like to think of it as a meet and mate. Hot and spicy with a little humour. Please do not purchase if you’re expecting it to be a novella or if you don’t like hot sex of the Lycan kind. Everyone else, sleep tight and maybe, just maybe let the Lycan have a bite. Maxine was happy in her own little world of sneaking around behind her brothers backs and doing all of those things that a female really shouldn’t. She didn’t want to dress up and parade her assets for men to gawk at that was her sister’s thing. She just wanted to be left alone and to her own devices… And then an Alpha walked into her life and she knew that it would never be the same again. Adult Content.

This was a wonderfully fantastic read, though it was a short novella it had everything necessary for a great story. Lee and Maxine truly were made for each other. I really enjoyed this book it had romance, humor, hot hot hot mating and an HEA.Lee is a strong, sexy Alpha male who came to talk with Maxine's brother and instead found his soul mate. Maxine is a beautiful, strong Alpha female who does not want a mate who will not see her as an equal. What happens when these two meet is a fantastic story and if you want to find out what happens next you will have to pick up this book.I highly recommend this book this author and this series to everyone who loves paranormal romances. You will love it as much as I did. Be sure to pick up a copy of this book you will be very very glad that you did.

Maxine or Max as she likes to be called. I kinda feel for her that everyone in her pack holds her back from doing what makes her happy. Lee has no intention of doing that wants her to be happy and do what she desires as long as it doesnt hurt her in any way. I loved how they met...that was hot and the chase? LOL...man she got one up on him for sure! Her sister was kinda not a very good sister to her. Hopefully she meets her mate and gets schooled! LOL.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A BAT? You mean the baseball thing? No, I mean the only flight-enabled mammal. By Pat Patterson Life ain't easy, when you are a bat.Actually, life ain't no bed a roses for just about anybody, except cats. I'm talkin' housecats, here, not ocelots. Sure, they are apex predators, but they still have fleas. Not like this fat black Manx SugarBelly, who periodically comes by to sit on me.Anyway, if you happen to be a man-size bat, you have to take life as it comes. Fortunately, the people in Riverville are pretty tolerant, and don't seem to mind that a bat is serving them their venti latte. But, the thing is, you see, that this particular bat happens to be Fledermaus Murphy. As in, THE Murphy. As in Murphy's Law, which says it's gonna go wrong in the worst way at the worst time, when you least expect it.Murphy's not the only strange character in Riverville, but except for the humans, everybody fits in really well with each other. The moles, for example, have a great job doing what they do best.If it weren't for the humans...particularly the humans determined that the high school not have mascots or mottos that are insensitive or aggressive. They spend a lot of time worrying about that sort of thing in Riverville, which is pretty pathetic. But Fledermaus Murphy believes it will all work out, in the end.But then, Murphy is an optimist.

Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. 21 of 23 people found the following review helpful. far poorer quality than the usual "Look and Find" books By avid reader! Very cute idea, not very well executed. We have a few of the "Look and Find" (Disney, others) by Publications International and I guess I was thinking this would be similar. It is not. So glad I saw it at our local big box (TrUs) before purchasing on Amazon. Wanted others to be aware in case they had similar expectations...How "minions Seek and Find" differs (disappointingly):- only about 1 cm thick, so far thinner than aforementioned "Look and Find" books;- pictures are significantly smaller overall, and slightly blurred (not crisp and clear -- I looked through half a dozen books in two different local TrUs stores, so this appears to be a rushed, or simply poor print job, not just a bad lot that I ran across);- colors are washed out, not bright; and- There are no pictures showing a child in what to "look" for on each 2-page spread. Instead, the items to be "found" are described in sentences/phrases. This takes away from independent use by children who are not yet reading -- unless they use the book simply to look at the pictures (not the book's intended purpose, but maybe an ok one for some). On the plus side, the pages of "minions" are much thinner, and the binding is much thinner (though both are hardcover books), so "minions - Seek and Find" is far lighter weight than the Pubs. Int'l "Look and Find" books -- making "minions" easier for travel. (It is still an oversized hardcover, though.)

He loves Minions as well as seek and find type books like this one, so I knew it would be a winner. He enjoys looking through the pages to find what is in the list. The only problem is he isn't reading yet, and the list is all text. It would have been nice to have pictures of what to look for on the pages. Still, a cute book for a Minion fan!

Maggy Thorsen, co-owner of the Wisconsin gourmet coffeehouse Uncommon Grounds, is in South Florida at an annual crime-writers' conference. She's attending with her beau, local sheriff Jake Pavlik, who is due to speak as a forensics expert.

But Maggy's pledge to behave solely as a tourist becomes much trickier than she anticipated. The conference's opening night event turns out to be a re-enactment of the Agatha Christie's classic, Murder on the Orient Express. As Maggy and Jake reluctantly set off on the night train into the Everglades to solve the literary crime, they soon find themselves embroiled in a real-life murder mystery as creepy and baffling as any work of fiction.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Best Maggy Thorsen Yet. By Mystery Fan I thought that Murder on the Orient Expresso is the best Maggy Thorsen book yet. The title alone is great! Gourmet coffee shop owner Maggy and significant other, Sheriff Jake Pavlik, aren't in their usual Wisconsin locale this time. Maggy accompanies Jake to a mystery writers conference in South Florida, where mayhem takes place on a Murder Mystery train ride into the Everglades. Great story, interesting supporting characters, lots of info on pythons in the Everglades, and lots of Maggy's wonderful sense of humor. Can't wait for the next one.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not her best By book & bird lover I have read and loved all her books. This one didn't measure up to her others. It was an ok read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Maggy and Sandra are the crema By D.A.Sarac Murder on the Orient Espresso is not only a great title, but also an engaging train ride through the Florida Everglades. This eighth book in the Maggy Thorsen series is entertaining, funny, and a cleverly put together puzzle. I’ve read the entire series and from the first days of Uncommon Grounds, through Bean There, Done That, and after Triple Shot, Maggy and friends have been pure fun.In book eight, Maggy and the oh-so-delicious Jake are off to the Everglades for a Crime Writers’ Conference with attendees playing the Agatha Christie roles. With perfectly believable ingenuity, Maggy again must solve her way out of a murder. Even with humorous dialogue, the far richer comedy of character aspect rounds out each story as you try to sort through the clues.Sandra Balzo creates a realistic sense of place and the narrow confines of the cars create an atmosphere of rising tension, bubbling jealousy, increasing hunger, and flooding swamp waters. And inside is a murderer playing the part of a murderer.I had a couple of laugh-out-loud moments in my quiet little library space and thought I should explain to another patron that pythons, feet, and cake knives were indeed a funny thing. I enjoyed this mystery so much that for a moment I felt bad about having such fun over a murder. But the characters were so stimulating and amusing that I just pretended I had an espresso martini, nodded to the bemused library visitor, and went on reading.

She has a job that she loved, even though she was not used to her abilities, okay she sort of liked not loved. But it is in law, her field. She had her apartment, that she needed a room mate to help pay for and would soon have to leave. Okay so she lived in the City that she loved and yes, she was happy. Maybe at best she was living, skimming by but was content. When all of that goes down the drain, so she runs to her home town for the holidays until she can get a handle on things. What she got was more than she had bargained for.Owen, had to take some time off work to help his father, Lucas with the diner. He never thought that being here would bring back the one thing he loved more than anything and yeah the one person that broke him in his past. She never knew he even existed, would she remember him?I loved this book because it was a full circle type of read that not only got your blood pumping when the sparks flew between Owen and Emily( not a spoiler you just know it will happen), but when they tackled the hard subjects that will make you worry you bottom lip and make you heart beat faster, you know this is simply amazing. The characters in this book will bring you back to a time when maybe you were invisible or wanted to be. It will make you think about the "what of's" from you past. This might make you smile or cringe but in the end it will warm your heart knowing that you Veronica got you and brought you into her world of love, pain and regret. A world where Owen faced the one girl he never had the courage to talk to. A world where Emily has to face her inner self and ask the hard questions. A world where growing up is the key to everyone's happiness. You know the real world, with a dash of an HEA to make this book perfection!

Enticed by Entice By amy j Amy J reviews.....Entice (Hearts of Stone #2) by Veronica Larsen4.5Entice is a sexy, humorous, second-chance love story."I've never been tasted like this before. This man knows what he's doing. He knows how much pressure to put where, he knows how to weave over all the sensitive spots. When to be rough, when to pull back. He puts his whole head into it."Are you Enticed yet? You should be. First off THAT COVER! I love it. Something so simple but so perfect to the story. Sure it's eye catching but once you read the story it will become one of you faves.I went into this story blind so there wouldn't be any expectations and so my review would be an organic reaction. Entice could definitely be read as a stand alone BUT if you have time...you really should read book 1 Entangle. The main characters of book 2 Entice, Owen and Emily, will resonate with readers and they will both have a special place in your heart after enduring their journey with them. Reading book 1 will pull the reader in even more to the story of these two sisters.Have you ever been in that place , you know, the one where you "know better", you should be "settled", when your an official "adult"? You find yourself in your adult role and it... sucks ? Not only did Emily finish law school she landed the ultimate grown up job, an attorney. Life is perfect or it should be. She should have been set right? We enter the story witnessing the ultimate Duct Tape moment . I found myself asking "did she really just say that out loud?" Oh yeah she did. I loved it , I wanted to be her... for a moment. Things downward spiral from there quickly- as they should right? I mean, the adult lesson of repercussions a/k/a responsibilities crashing down upon us when not dealt with blah blah blah. Emily finds out slowly but surely what happens when these adult expectations and responsibilities are ignored and finds herself going to "visit" her sister in her home town.Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwennnn I love you! GAHHHH that back story is just too much, I wish I could have hugged him. Is he bitter? Maybe a little , or is that the proverbial jail surrounding his heart to protect him? So here we have two characters protecting themselves from what? We find out as the story progresses however Emily uses her past approach which she finds out the hard way it is the wrong path. She finds herself ENTICED by ALL the wrong answers.Emily is one of the most realistic characters I've read. She could be ANY ONE OF US at any age. How far does she have to drift, will she stop drifting? Will she see the possible happiness that is straight in front of her? Can she do what it takes?4.5 stars

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved Emily fiercely & Owen made my heart (and other places) throb. SO GOOD! – 4.5 stars – By Heather / Obsessed With Myshelf Emily is an unabashed heroine who says what she thinks, even when she doesn’t mean to. She is hilarious. She’s sort of out of control and a bit ridiculous, but I loved it. She’s an attorney [enter, bias] and she’s pretty sure she’s pretending to be an adult [oh, hi. is this an autobiography? I don’t remember signing a release, but….]. She’s forced to meet with a client while her boss, the Real Attorney, is running late. And her brain and mouth decide not to work together and she actually SAYS what she means to THINK. And f@#k if I didn’t laugh out loud and choke on my drink. It’s actually sort of surprising that something like that hasn’t happened to me yet.So, she loses her job. Loses her apartment. and loses all sense of what the hell she’s supposed to be doing with her life. Being an adult is supposed to be awesome, but everyone forgets to tell you what to do when you GET THERE. Instead, people focus on: ‘go to school’, ‘get a job’, ‘be just like everyone else, but be unique’. LIFE IS HARD.She sort of moves back in with her sister, even though her sister doesn’t really know that she’s moved in. She’ll tell her if she needs to. And then she runs into Owen. Beautiful, wonderfully sweet, adorable, heart-stopping, Owen.Owen may have been a little thing back in high school, but he’s allllll man now. Holy Jesus, he’s hot. Very, very hot. This book delves into a deeper connection than just sex and it’s mostly about Emily floundering around while Owen stands there being the incredibly solid rock of a man that he is. He’s an anchor that she can grab onto, but she doesn’t know how to do that without letting go of the flimsy raft she’s floating on.Owen’s not without his own issues in life, and I was actually surprised when I found out a few things about him. However, none of that information turns you off. If you’re looking for a steadfast book boyfriend who isn’t going to mess with your emotions, then you need to jump on Owen. Hard. and against the walls. and on the counter. *shudders*This is a seriously fantastic book. I loved Emily fiercely & Owen made my heart (and other places) throb. SO GOOD! – 4.5 stars –[I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review]

Mary Poppins Comes Back, by Dr. P. L. Travers

Review "When Mary Poppins is about, her young charges can never tell where the real world merges into make-believe. Neither can the reader, and that is one of the hallmarks of good fantasy."--The New York Times

About the Author

P. L. Travers (1899-1996) was a drama critic, travel essayist, reviewer, lecturer, and the creator of Mary Poppins. Ms. Travers wrote several other books for adults and children, but it is for the character of Mary Poppins that she is best remembered.

MARY SHEPARD (1910-2000) was the daughter of Ernest Shepard, illustrator of the Winnie the Pooh books and The Wind in the Willows. She illustrated P. L. Travers's Mary Poppins books for more than fifty years.

The Kite  It was one of those mornings when everything looks very neat and bright and shiny, as though the world had been tidied up overnight.            In Cherry-Tree Lane the houses blinked as their blinds went up, and the thin shadows of the cherry-trees fell in dark stripes across the sunlight. But there was no sound anywhere, except for the tingling of the Ice Cream Man’s bell as he wheeled his cart up and down.  “stop me and buy one” said the placard in front of the cart. And presently a Sweep came round the corner of the Lane and held up his black sweepy hand.            The Ice Cream Man went tingling up to him.            “Penny one,” said the Sweep. And he stood leaning on his bundle of brushes as he licked out the Ice Cream with the tip of his tongue. When it was all gone he gently wrapped the cone in his handkerchief and put it in his pocket.            “Don’t you eat cones?” said the Ice Cream Man, very surprised.            “No. I collect them!” said the Sweep. And he picked up his brushes and went in through Admiral Boom’s front gate because there was no Tradesman’s Entrance.            The Ice Cream Man wheeled his cart up the Lane again and tingled, and the stripes of shadow and sunlight fell on him as he went.            “Never knew it so quiet before!” he murmured, gazing from right to left, and looking out for customers.            At that very moment a loud voice sounded from Number Seventeen. The Ice Cream Man cycled hurriedly up to the gate, hoping for an order.            “I won’t stand it! I simply will not stand any more!” shouted Mr. Banks, striding angrily from the front door to the foot of the stairs and back again.            “What is it?” said Mrs. Banks anxiously, hurrying out of the dining-room. “And what is that you are kicking up and down the hall?”            Mr. Banks lunged out with his foot and something black flew half-way up the stairs.            “My hat!” he said between his teeth. “My Best Bowler Hat!”            He ran up the stairs and kicked it down again. It spun for a moment on the tiles and fell at Mrs. Banks’ feet.            “Is anything wrong with it?” said Mrs. Banks, nervously. But to herself she wondered whether there was not something wrong with Mr. Banks.            “Look and see!” he roared at her.            Trembling, Mrs. Banks stooped and picked up the hat. It was covered with large, shiny, sticky patches and she noticed it had a peculiar smell.            She sniffed at the brim.            “It smells like boot-polish,” she said.            “It is boot-polish,” retorted Mr. Banks. “Robertson Ay has brushed my hat with the boot-brush—in fact, he has polished it.”            Mrs. Banks’ mouth fell with horror.            “I don’t know what’s come over this house,” Mr. Banks went on. “Nothing ever goes right—hasn’t for ages! Shaving water too hot, breakfast coffee too cold. And now—this!”            He snatched his hat from Mrs. Banks and caught up his bag.            “I am going!” he said. “And I don’t know that I shall ever come back. I shall probably take a long sea-voyage.”            Then he clapped the hat on his head, banged the front door behind him and went through the gate so quickly that he knocked over the Ice Cream Man, who had been listening to the conversation with interest.            “It’s your own fault!” he said crossly. “You’d no right to be there!” And he went striding off towards the City, his polished hat shining like a jewel in the sun.            The Ice Cream Man got up carefully and, finding there were no bones broken, he sat down on the kerb, and made it up to himself by eating a large Ice Cream. . . .            “Oh, dear!” said Mrs. Banks as she heard the gate slam. “It is quite true. Nothing does go right nowadays. First one thing and then another. Ever since Mary Poppins left without a Word of Warning everything has gone wrong.”            She sat down at the foot of the stairs and took out her handkerchief and cried into it.            And as she cried, she thought of all that had happened since that day when Mary Poppins had so suddenly and so strangely disappeared.            “Here one night and gone the next—most upsetting!” said Mrs. Banks gulping.            Nurse Green had arrived soon after and had left at the end of a week because Michael had spat at her. She was followed by Nurse Brown who went out for a walk one day and never came back. And it was not until later that they discovered that all the silver spoons had gone with her.            And after Nurse Brown came Miss Quigley, the Governess, who had to be asked to leave because she played scales for three hours every morning before breakfast and Mr. Banks did not care for music.            “And then,” sobbed Mrs. Banks to her handkerchief, “there was Jane’s attack of measles, and the bath-room geyser bursting and the Cherry-Trees ruined by frost and——”            “If you please, m’m——!” Mrs. Banks looked up to find Mrs. Brill, the cook, at her side.            “The kitchen flue’s on fire!” said Mrs. Brill gloomily.           “Oh, dear. What next?” cried Mrs. Banks. “You must tell Robertson Ay to put it out. Where is he?”            “Asleep, m’m, in the broom-cupboard. And when that boy’s asleep, nothing’ll wake him—not if it’s an Earthquake, or a regiment of Tom-toms,” said Mrs. Brill, as she followed Mrs. Banks down the kitchen stairs.            Between them they managed to put out the fire but that was not the end of Mrs. Banks’ troubles.            She had no sooner finished luncheon than a crash, followed by a loud thud, was heard from upstairs.            “What is it now?” Mrs. Banks rushed out to see what had happened.            “Oh, my leg, my leg!” cried Ellen, the housemaid.            She sat on the stairs, surrounded by broken china, groaning loudly.            “What is the matter with it?” said Mrs. Banks sharply.            “Broken!” said Ellen dismally, leaning against the banisters.            “Nonsense, Ellen! You’ve sprained your ankle, that’s all!” bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"           But Ellen only groaned again.            “My leg is broken! What will I do?” she wailed, over and over again.         ...

The chapter called "Bad Tuesday" involves a magical compass that transports the characters all over the world. The original work used the author's vision of what the people would be like, and had used some pretty offensive stereotypes of the time. But the altered version completely changed the story, not only using animals instead of people, but changing even the storyline. Would have liked to be able to see the original work also, or at least been warned that the newer version was altered to that extent.

I'm so glad to see they have finally arrived in hardcover with the original covers. No, this is not the sugary Disney movie--but this, the original story, will take your breath away with its magic and wonder. Give it a try. I think if you take these stories for what they are you will appreciate the wit and the adventure.

41 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Mary Poppins Pops In For Parties in the Park By Lynn Bulmahn When adults forget their childhood pals, daydreamers make foolish wishes and the wind blows unusually strong, it always leads to something quite out of the ordinary -- that is, whenever Mary Poppins is around. In this, the final Mary Poppins book that P.L. Travers gave us before her death at age 90, we share the five Banks' childrens' adventures. Besides Jane and Michael, who were in the classic Disney movie, there are also toddler twins John and Barbara and infant Annabel.A big departure from the Disney flick is Mary Poppins herself. Here, she is not the smiling, syrupy sweet nanny that young Julie Andrews portrayed; rather, the book's title character is strict, stern, often sarcastic and very taken with herself. Her strong personality makes her a unique storybook character and readers will find this Mary Poppins more of an enigma. Which, frankly, makes for better stories.Everything in this book is G-rated but not preachy. Travers gives her young readers many fascinating, but never frightening, fantasy situations. Or are they real? Jane and Michael can never quite tell. The lines between what's real and what's not always blur around Mary Poppins. This book is a series of unrelated chapters, self-contained stories, all dealing with the same main characters. Nothing is ever as it seems in the nursery of No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane -- or in the nearby park.On a hot summer's day, Mary Poppins tells the children a tale of a hobo who was an angel in disguise, shedding his rags and growing wings as he flies away. In another chapter, Michael, upset that he's caught a cold, finds that some days when everything seems to be going all right, it's actually going all wrong. He's taught a valuable lesson on a planet full of cats.Later in the book, the children find messages on falling leaves. And witness a delightful, but not frightening, Halloween shadow dance in the park. The nanny's magical cousin, Mr. Mo, is introduced. Jane finds the little toy figures she's created and destroyed do have lives of their own. Around Mary Poppins, adults -- including favorites such as Admiral Boom, Miss Lark and her two dogs Andrew and Willoughby, the Bird Woman and Bert -- are caught off balance. Zookeepers, policemen and taxi drivers react to a flurry of frenzied events. Characters pop out of storybooks, out of Jane's mind, and off ceramic bookends. Lions and unicorns and even Indian chiefs prance through the park.We are taken to worlds that exist between the blades of grass in the lawn, and up in the sky, to where felines and children disappear. There are traffic snarls, wedding breakfasts and birthday parties. And through it all, stalks Mary Poppins, with not a hair out of place. In very short order, characters get what they deserve, if not what they expect, and things are set right. How does she do it? No one knows. Mary Poppins, you see, never, ever explains. But, she always entertains. Have some fun in the park with this magical nanny.

Leverage is one of my favourite TV shows - I love the chemistry that exists between the characters, with each one bringing a different skill to the party, and this is exactly what Urban Outlaws does. Yes, suspension of disbelief will be an essential requirement when reading this book, and the cynical among you should just p*** off right now and go hunt for your inner child before picking this book up. Seriously, if books like this had been around when I was a kid I may never have left my home except to go reluctantly to school. This is one of those books that you will have to prise from kids' hands to stop them reading (although shame on you for even contemplating such a heinous act). I certainly refused to do anything until I had finished it, and read it from cover to cover in a single sitting. However, it is a fairly quick read as almost every chapter is full of great action sequences, peril for our team of heroes and great uses of high tech gadgets, so readers will find themselves flying through the story at a frenetic and almost heart-bursting pace. This is a book for every kind of kid - the sporty ones will love Slink, the free-runner; the tech geeks will love Jack, Charlie and Obi; the couch potatoes will love Obi and the action junkies will love all of them; there are great male characters and great female characters, with even Wren, the youngest and newest member of the team, having her moment (although I really hope she will get more of a chance to shine in future books). Hell, I'm over 40 and I really, really wanted to be one of the team so I can only imagine how excited younger readers will get at the thought of having adventures like these.

By Hotcha The first in a dynamite new series where five ordinary kids play Robin Hood, steal from the rich and help the citizens of a London suburb shantytown. Jack Fenton, at fifteen, is the leader of the group and a whiz on the computer as well as a chubby kid nicknamed Obi. Slink is a master at climbing buildings using only his hands, and Charlie is a whiz at inventing anything they needed. All of these kids escaped from a children's home to form a family, but ended up over their heads when they discovered a evil man's plan to cause global World War II if not stopped!Mr. Black intrigues you from the very first page and endears you from this band of misfits. It is a Must READ, and can't wait to read book 2!I won this book in exchange for a review.

Many people wonder why women who are verbally, emotionally, physically and sexually abused by their partners are still hanging onto the relationship. These women can end up in a hospital fighting for their lives. They can get their children taken away due to exposing them to an abusive male. They can lose all of their relationships, money and dignity in this relationship, but still they come back to their abuser. Not only do these women bounce back from the abuse to rekindle the romance with their abusive partners, but they try to protect their abusers from being punished for all of the things that they have done. The situation is a no-brainer for the outsiders who are looking in. But it isn’t so clear to the two people who are in the toxic relationships to see why they keep feeling overwhelming connectedness towards a partner who treats them like pond scum at least part of the time. There is a good reason for this strange relationship between an abuser and an abused victim, and this ebook will seek to explain it in layman’s terms. The concept that these relationships are eventually based on is something called Trauma Bonding. It binds the person doing the abusing with the person that is receiving the abuse in a deeply entrenched manner. Neither of them can seem to break the bonds of this toxic relationship and move on with their lives. Trauma bonding occurs when an abuser uses intense fear, intimidation, manipulation, overly romantic gestures, mind-control and crazy-making tactics in order to entrap the other person in the relationship. The more confused and disoriented the victim becomes, the more control and pressure is exerted by the abusive party... Download now to read more!

Septimus Harding is leading a contented life as the warden of Hiram's Hospital, an almshouse in the diocese of Barchester, when a young reformer challenges the way that the charity is run. In the ensuing legal battle between the diocese and the reformers, Mr Harding is besieged by both sides until his position becomes intolerable. The story is told with the usual humour we expect from Anthony Trollope. This is the first of the Barchester Chronicles but can be read as a stand alone novel.

The Warden, by Anthony Trollope

From Publishers Weekly This first novel in Trollope's classic Chronicles of Barsetshire series pits reformer John Bold against Septimus Harding, the precentor of Barchester Cathedral and warden of Hiram's Hospital, an almshouse supported by a bequest to the local diocese. As Bold works to expose the fact that more of the charity's income goes to Harding than to its bedesmen, he begins to take a romantic interest in Harding's youngest daughter, Eleanor. In this audio edition, narrator David Shaw-Parker delivers a winning performance that keeps listeners engaged throughout. With a deep, accented voice Shaw-Parker brings this 19th-century novel to life. His timing and tone are spot-on and he creates distinct voices for the book's many characters. (Apr.)

Review "Trollope will remain one of the most trustworthy . . . of the writers who have helped the heart of man to know itself." --Henry James

From the Publisher The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, lesser-known literature. Newly type-set and produced on high-quality paper in trade paperback format, the Broadview Literary Texts series is a delight to handle as well as to read.

Each volume includes a full introduction, chronology, bibliography, and explanatory notes along with a variety of documents from the period, giving readers a rich sense of the world from which the work emerged.

Higgins I first read Anthony Trollope's book "The Warden" in 1995 at the age of 54; three years later I had finished all forty-seven Trollope novels, his autobiography, and most of his short stories. "The Warden" provides a necessary introduction to the Barsetshire Novels, which, in turn, provide a marvelous introduction to rural Victorian society, and its religious, political, and social underpinnings. However, "The Warden" is a small literary masterpiece of its own, even though the more popular "Barchester Towers" tends to obscure it. "The Warden" moves slowly, of course, but so did Victorian England; soon the reader is enveloped in a rich world of brilliantly created characters: in the moral dilemma of a charming and innocent man, Reverend Septimus Harding, who is probably the most beloved of all Trollope's characters; in the connivings of Archdeacon Grantly, who will become a significant force in the later Barsetshire novels; in Eleanor, an example of the perfect Victorian woman, a type that appears in many of Trollope's subsequent novels; and in the sanctimonious meddling of John Bold, whose crusade for fairness throws the town into turmoil. In modern terminology, "The Warden" is a "good read" for those readers with patience, a love of 19th century England, and an appreciation of literary style. Trollope's sentences have a truly musical cadence. "The Warden" was Trollope's fourth novel and his first truly successful one. It provides a strong introduction to the other five novels of the Barsetshire series, where the reader will meet a group of fascinating characters, including the Mrs. Proudie (one of Trollope's finest creations), the Reverend Obadiah Slope, and the Grantly family. The reader will soon find that Trollope's well-developed characters soon become "friends," and that the small cathedral town of Barchester becomes a very familiar and fascinating world in itself. It is a wonderful trip through these six novels. (I read all six in about three weeks.) But one must begin with "The Warden." Brew a cup of tea, toast a scone on a quiet evening, and begin the wonderful voyage through Trollope's charming Barchester. When you have finished the six novels, you may, like me, want to commence reading the Palliser series (another six novels) and follow Plantagenet and Glencora Palliser through their triumphs and travails! However, that remains another story.

45 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Classic of victorian fiction, slightly dated by modern standards By TS This is the first of Anthony Trollope's "Chronicles of Barsetshire" novels, and his first popularly successful novel. The basic plot is that the Warden, Mr. Harding, has 1) a sinecure church position that pays him 800 pounds a year; 2) a reform-minded friend who's trying to abolish church sinecures; 3) a daughter who wants to marry the reform-minded friend; and 4) an existing son-in-law of an Archdeacon who takes defending the Rights of the Church very, very seriously. If you like Jane Austen novels there's a good chance you'll like this, as the basic plots -- church livings, the marriage prospects of 19th-centry british gentry -- are fairly similar. Trollope's prose here is fairly light and clear, and if not quite as sharply witty as Austen's, no one else's prose is either. Trollope does spill a great deal of ink on lengthy asides to the reader, some of which paint interesting pictures of contemporary British culture and some of which modern readers may find *amazingly* skippable.Overall, this one's a lightly pleasant example of precisely the sort of intelligent, Victorian parlor romance it's trying to be. If you like this, the next volume in sequence is Barchester Towers; it's a bit more comically satirical, somewhere in between this and P.G. Wodehouse, but almost certainly something you'll enjoy if you liked this one.

The Reverend Harding is the warden of a small home providing quarters for 12 retired, indigent workers. The facility is provided for by a trust set up by its founder over two hundred years ago. Income off the land provides revenue for the maintenance of the home and a living for the warden.. The warden has traditionally been the benefactor of this income which has increased over the years. The Rev. Harding is a gentle, honest man who has never given thought to his 800 pound annual revenue until a young reformer files suit, claiming the intent of the will is being violated. Harding thinks about the matter and is inclined to resign. The Bishop and Archdeacon argue that he is entitled to the income. This book certainly would be a good one for a book club read and discussion. The reformer, the lawyers, the church hierarchy and Reverend Harding all have their views on the matter. Author Trollope does not really pass final judgment on his characters; none of them are cast in black and white terms. In fact Trollope makes the unusual move of bringing a criticism of both the press and Charles Dickens into the novel. The press makes strident value judgments about issues without bothering itself with all the facts or considering the effect their articles will have on the people involved; Charles Dickens treats people as being all good or all bad. Indeed, I found myself arguing with myself for several days after reading The Warden. What should the Rev. Harding done? Was the issue shrouded in shades of gray, or was it clear cut one way or the other? Many critics consider this to be one of Trollope's lesser works, yet to me it is a very interesting, valuable presentation of an ethical dilemma. And for readers who are reluctant to pick up Victorian novels because of their common 700+ page lengths, this is a little gem at less than 300 pages. Criticism? Well I did a bit of eye-rolling during some of the melodramatic passages. All and all, though, this is an excellent read. From an historical standpoint there was considerable attention being paid to clergy income during this period in England. Trollope's tale was very timely in this regard. One final note. There are many outstanding Victorian novels that I would give a five star rating to. This book doesn't quite fit into that hall of fame so I have given it just 4 stars, which shouldn't be interpreted as a slight to Mr. Trollope or The Warden.

MASTERPIECE, by Thomas Hoving

From Library Journal Imagine the excitement in the art world when an old British noble is about to auction off the family's famed Velasquez, a portrait of the artist's naked mistress. Private collectors and museums vie to own it, with Washington's National Gallery and New York's Metropolitan emerging as the strongest contenders. That the two principals are vying for the Met's top job and also happen to become lovers are titillating complications. Hoving, former Met director and current editor of Connoisseur ,pulls together politics, crime, and commerce as the greed of profiteers and the lust of collectors ripen into artful scams. On occasion, imagination outstrips technique. The main characters hover at the edge of credibility. The heroine, like Wonder Woman, whips into a new persona. A courtly dwarf uses electronic powers to pry out every secret. The hero is fabulously wealthy, capable, romantic, and also an undercover agent. But these are forgivable flaws in this lavish and exuberant romp through the gilt-edged world of patrons and proteges. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Art Intrigue at the Highest Level By L. Young After hundreds of years hidden away by an aristocratic English family, Velasquez's painting of his mistress is suddenly put up for auction. A bevy of art collectors and museum directors vie to win this beauty. At the top of the list of those competing are Olivia Cartwright the acting director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Andrew Foster the director of Washington DC's National Gallery. The painting is being offered at a staggering price which will set an all time record. Who will win her? Alas, no one in this novel is who he actually appears to be. Machinations are rife. So is romance. Is the painting even genuine. This is a delightful intrigue for those interested in art. Along the way interesting tidbits are sprinkled of museum gossip and art history.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An good old fashioned story By Sunny Day I just this year (2013) read Thomas Hoving's Masterpiece. It is full or turns and twists with a lot of information about what goes on behind the scenes in museums' masterpiece acquisitions. While I found the beginning of the book a little confusing with the introduction of too many characters all at once, it soon became easy to follow. In the long run the plot may be forgettable but the many details about museums and artwork verification will long be remembered.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Diverting Romp Through the Art World By Book Lover I have read and loved most of Thomas Hoving's nonfiction work, False Impressions, Making the Mummies Dance, etc. and loved it, but I was hesitant to try out his fiction. Now I'm glad I did. Sometimes over the top but almost always a diverting romp through the New York art scene that I love so much!
