A remote farmhouse in Cornwall seems the perfect place for Ash to settle into his recently altered status. Starting a new life there with Sam—the shifter he can’t stay away from—should be easy this far from London where they faced so much danger. So why does adjusting seem impossible? Sam has issues of his own. He has to get used to his human form again after living the last eight years as a wolf. It’s hard when human worries weigh so heavily on his shoulders. Life is much more straightforward from a wolf’s perspective, until Ash needs his human support. Ash’s problem is simple: he’s fearful of shifting fully. How can he believe he won’t hurt Sam when his genes were altered to create a killer? Despite repeated reassurance, his anger and resentment increase. Only one thing is certain: if Ash can’t learn to trust himself soon, he’s in danger of proving himself right.

The Altered 2 - 4.5 stars By Nikyta After the events a few weeks ago that made Ash an altered, the gang moved to an isolated location where they could recover and build a new life. Unfortunately, some of them are settling in faster than others. Ash, for one, isn’t able to come to terms with what he is now and as it gets closer to the full moon, he becomes and more volatile. Thankfully, he has Sam there to help him but Sam has his own issues, like the fact he’d rather be a wolf than a human. The connection they have together is strong but will the two open up enough to let it heal the fears they both have?Okay, okay, that synopsis I wrote isn’t exactly stellar BUT hopefully you’ll read the book and find out for yourself what it’s about!!! Because this series so far is amazing! I’m adoring it and the world that Ms. Jacobs created. This book, though, is based more on the after affects of the first book so it’s not about action or suspense. It’s about building a relationship between Ash and Sam. We see both Sam and Ash develop into the people they can be. At the beginning Ash is scared, confused and very quick to become violent while Sam is still spending most of his days as a wolf. As the story goes on, you learn more and more about their fears, the reasons for why they’re scared. I really loved that because by the end of the story, they’ve developed as characters, no longer afraid but confident and comfortable with themselves.I really, really loved this one but I missed the action from the first book. I also wanted to see more of Sam and Ash after Ash comes to terms with who he is because now I have questions. Does his quick temper still surface around the full moon? Or did that go away once he shifted fully? Are the others still leery around him? Did they discover anything else that makes Ash different than them?In the end, though, this was a fabulous addition to the series. I loved that we got Ash and Sam’s story and that they both developed over the course of it. I liked that Ash gave Sam a reason to be human and Sam gave Ash a reason to be wolf. It was sweet the dynamics between them and I absolutely ADORED their chemistry together. I can’t wait to read Matt’s story and really hoping he gets his own man (and not a woman because isn’t he straight? lol). If you’re looking for something that’s relationship-centric, definitely give this one a go!

Review by Diane By Hearts On Fire Reviews 4.5In 1995, a lab created lycanthropy pathogen was put into the water supply in Great Britain, with varied results, some people were not affected at all, some became full shifter wolves, some partial, some gained the ability to see the altered, but could not shift themselves, while some were not affected at all. Sam is an altered who can fully shift while Ash was never affected. These two characters connected in The Altered story and thankfully, for those of us who enjoyed the first book and these two young men, we get their story now.The story is told from the alternating points of view of Sam and Ash.I hope if you are reading this, you have read the first book, The Altered, as there could be plot spoilers in here! At the time this story starts, Sam is now 25 and has spent 8 years as a wolf, only shifting to human near the end of the first book when Ash’s life is threatened. Ash is 21, and although not affected or not exposed to the first pathogen, was injected with a new version of it when they took out the facility that was holding Jordan. Daniel saw his wolf when he was injected, although he has yet to shift, even though everyone expects he will be like Jordan, Keira and Sam.Well, the author managed to make me cry in the first chapter, so for anyone who has read any of my reviews, you know that gives them points right there!!! Since you are now getting Sam’s point of view, you find out why he stayed in wolf form so long, why he feels guilty for that but why it also feels more normal for him. You also get his point of view of how he feels about Ash and his disappointment when Ash does not look at him when he’s human the way he does when he’s a wolf. Again, this circles back to what I said in my first review, these young people were not born into a shifter world, they were altered into them, so no one taught them how it works for mates, feelings, the differences between the human and the wolf and so on. That was carried through to this story as well.Even when Ash is uncharacteristically aggressive, scaring Daniel, scaring himself, no one picks up on why it is until Keira brings it up – the full moon is only a few days away and perhaps affecting Ash more than them because they’ve all had a few years to adjust. From Ash’s point of view, you get his confusion over his feelings, his body seemingly out of his control with the shift and eventually, the fear that keeps him from shifting. This is a beautiful and heartbreaking story, Ash is such a gentle soul, it is no wonder he was so affected by the change and his worries of what it would mean, to the point of giving him nightmares.Again, I liked the pace the author gave the story, although I had a hard time putting the book down and did manage to read it in one day! I also liked that the story ended in a way that, should the author choose, that is the end of this series, or, it could be continued.Again, I would recommend this for paranormal and fantasy fans since it is a cross between the two, not purely either one. And again, I’ll be looking forward to reading more by this author!

By It's About The Book There will probably be a few spoilers about events in book 1 in this review. You must read book 1 first or you’ll be missing out on a ton of back story. I guess you could read this one as a shifter romance since this book was basically just that. There was little to no tension beyond Ash and his mood swings. Definitely nothing like the first book which had that always watching your back type feeling to it because the bad guys could have been anywhere. And they were out to get them!Altered 2 picks up not long after where book 2 ends. The group of friends escape the city after burning down the lab. They’ve holed up in a house on the beach. Ash is dealing with the confusion and fear of being given the serum and what that means for him. He’s also having a hard time distinguishing between Sam the man and his wolf. He’s developed a strong affection for the wolf but Sam the man obviously wants something more. Ash doesn’t know if he believes in mates and it’s sure as hell the wrong time in his life to fall for a guy. Ash starts lashing out in anger because the full moon is coming but he refuses to shift. He’s terrified of the monster he could become. After all, the government starting making that serum to create the super soldier killing machine. This book had a very different vibe than the last one which was kind of disappointing. I guess they needed some downtime and the baddies will have to hunt them down again. Ash was so stubborn in this one. It made for a pretty angsty read. He was so determined to NOT shift and NOT love Sam even though both were inevitable. Sam was pretty awesome in this book. Very honest and understanding. He put himself out there making him vulnerable to heartbreak since he clearly loves Ash. Communicating in human is different for Sam since he’s stayed in his wolf form for the majority of the last 8 years. This book was pretty much about Ash coming to terms with becoming an Altered and falling in love with Sam.There were a few issues I had with the book. In one part of the book Sam wakes up naked and freezing. Ash also. Then later it explains how they don’t feel cold like humans anymore. Just didn’t add up or at the very least needed some more explanation. Also, Sam’s sister lectures Jordan about being an idiot and not giving Ash a break about being violent when he’s newly Altered so close to the full moon. Then she goes straight to violence when it’s her brother Ash accidentally injures. I get it’s a natural impulse but these things just stuck out as inconsistent to me.I don’t know if there will be anymore books in this series or not. I hope there are but I hope it’s something more than just an angsty shifter romance. I missed the danger and the fight against evil. It just had a very different feel than the first one. Maybe my mind is too twisted but I expected Sam’s secret of why he stayed in wolf form to be darker. It was a valid reason and it worked. If you’ve read the first book you’ll want to read this one too. I was very excited to get my hands Ash and Sam’s story. The anticipation of these two finally getting together meant I had to pick this one up. So not as good as the first book IMO but worth the read.
