Doing Time on Planet Earth is a character-driven dark comedy/off-beat mystery that’s filled with snarky satire, dry wit, and absurd situations as three very different individuals find their lives intertwining in the strangest of ways.
Unable to find work, romantically challenged, and with only her “net buds,” the anonymous members of her TV series fan discussion boards to turn to, Caddy is ready to call it quits. She has the gun her father gave her for protection, but there’s one small problem: she has no idea how to use it.
Fiske, a private investigator who changed his identity from Hispanic to Londoner, complete with a fake British accent, notices Caddy’s nervousness on the subway and confronts her as she’s attempting to end her life.
Hope, an identity thief and embezzler who collects Loony Tunes action figures, is one of Caddy’s net buds, a fellow obsessed fan of the wildly popular TV show Spywitch. She’s also the subject of Fiske’s current investigation.

The internet is fostering the practice of anonymity as identity. A young woman, trapped between being a round peg in a round familial hole, and a round peg in the square hole of New York City, stands poised to commit suicide as a way of conclusively establishing her identity. This well-written adventure starts off with a bang that doesn’t happen, and traces the protagonist’s subsequent search for identity through the ever-changing identities of friends and strangers, all of whom are exactly what they seem, and equally something else. The epicenter of action is Bryant Park in Manhattan, whence the adventures of Candace/Caddy and her old—and dangerously new—friends emanate and expand, reaching into downtown Brooklyn and back, and New Yorkers will relish the details and even identify a few unnamed landmarks in the action. Caddy’s search for an identity that would delegitimize her suicide attempt involves her in a serio-comic adventure in which hope and faith present themselves to her in various guises, in which Anglophile Hispanic private investigators trip over their own tongue but are surprisingly effective despite that, and in which blood is not only thicker than water, but thicker than a $1 million stack of bills. Caddy negotiates her way through an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a New York City subway map as she tries to use the mystery in which she is embroiled as scaffolding for a new self-image that will enable more than mere survival in the most multi-faceted city in the world. The book is much better-written than is this review, and a lot more fun to read. Highly recommended for those who are New Yorkers, those who wish they were, and those looking for a good book that is hard to put down.

Christine said if someone liked her Livejournals posts, you'd like the book, that's super true. This book contains many love letters: to NYC for sure, to LJ, to online boards, also to long swishy coats with enough nods back to early to mid aughts television. But it isn't dated by any means.I liked the feel of the book, as noir is most definitely her paintbrush, I'd say. She captures that well, and I can almost picture the visuals in black and white. The characters were likeable, and I wanted to continue reading to discover how it all turns out. And there is enough doubt in the character to make her interesting without being formulaic, mid 20s NYC woman. There was a nice selection of cultures, as one would expect in NYC, but never verges into cliché. It's lightly, but well done. There are also tender commentary on 9/11, as seen through the eyes of both the author and the characters. I thought that particularly well done.

It gave the flavor of a “Film Noire” story and I was not disappointed. The fact the story takes place in Brooklyn adds a very hip (and for me - familiar) beat. From the first page the reader is thrust onto a dark street where our Caddy is unwittingly being followed by a stranger who finds HER suspicious! They are both about to play out a life threatening, yet very humorous drama, in the Gowanus Canal! The story starts here and doesn’t stop building - adding more layers of intriguing, frightening yet heartfelt characters until a wonderful twist at the end which one would never have guessed. The modern day nuances of identity theft, cell phones, and computers coupled with secrets, blackmail, threats of murder and strange old ladies is a great page turning romp. At the end even the bad guys have their reasons for being bad. Well written and great story. I totally see this as a film.
