From the Booker-shortlisted author acclaimed as having "no literary precedent" (Independent) comes a gently absurd examination of the systems that trap and frustrate us daily. Fans of dry humor will enjoy this tale of mishap and folly, told from the point of view of a bus driver who's been charged to maintain a precise distance between himself and other buses--a directive that leads him to ignore the very passengers he's meant to serve.
Witty, allegorical, and intelligent, this is a novel for all those who have ever run for a bus, only to have it pull away as they reach its doors. Showcasing all of Mills' strengths, it is the perfect reintroduction for American readers to an incomparable talent.

Review
“It's finally happened: Britain's most famous bus-driving novelist has given us a novel about buses. All your questions will be answered: why do you wait for ages only for three to come at once? Who are those men who hang around bus stops muttering into handsets? And why do buses suddenly terminate halfway into your journey? . . . There is a perfect match between Mills' subject and his peculiar obsessions . . . Brilliant.” ―Independent
“Once you've read this excellent, funny, intelligent book, it will make you look in a more kindly way on that harried driver as he zooms away into the night.” ―Daily Telegraph
“Mills' deadpan humor about the surreal workings of the transport authority has a distinct ring of truth. This novel should be required reading for those in charge of our chaotic public transport system.” ―Daily Mail
“A subtle meditation on what it means to try to impose order in a fundamentally chaotic world . . . I suspect Mills has much more to say about power, officialdom, and even buses than he has done here. However, his reticence has always given readers space to think, and his deadpan celebration of chaos is even heart-warming.” ―The Guardian

This is a thin version of Catch-22. Mills lets us have more fun than the driver or the passengers. Our protagonist is a veteran of the driver corps. He and his driver friends run up against the bureaucracy on a daily basis. Of course, the London bus bureaucracy (like bureaucracies everywhere) loves requiring that things be done in a certain way for the excellent reason that they have always been done that way. While not laugh-out-loud funny, Maintenance of Way will keep a smile on your face for the duration of this all-to-short book. If you like British humour, you will get a kick out of this one. I have ordered two more books by Mills because of this one.

Read it if you want to smile ironically By AmandaNicole.Books The Maintenance of Headway by Magnus Millshttp://www.bloomsbury.com/author/magnus-millsSynopsis: Let's follow a bus driver who in charge of keeping a particular distance in between buses, or maintain headway. The daily objective of bus drivers along with their mishaps and complications can be quite distracting. If bus drivers have so much to focus on, what happens to the passengers?Review: Oh the world of bus drivers! Who knew it could be so complicated and political. The characters are pretty funny in a way you'll probably find yourself smirking the entire book. Our main character is just quite the character and I love the story told through his voice. The seriousness and complexity of public transportation is hinted at on a satirical way. It can all be very dramatic actually. Our author is actually a bus driver himself and that's where the wonderful insight comes from.At the same time I think if the reader really thinks, this book is a lot deeper than face value. It might make you question a lot, societal norms, work politics, even our purpose in life. This was a really short book and it's great for reading during times you only have the opportunity to squeeze it in, like perhaps on the bus or train to work? It'll keep you thinking long after you've finished it and despite the lack of anything huge or super dramatic going on, it's not even close to boring. It's interesting. The writing style was fun and the plot was equally great. This book gets a 4/5⭐ for readability. I think if you have a few minutes to spare, no matter what genre you enjoy, you should go check it out.The Maintenance of Headway by Magnus Mills. Bloomsbury USA (May 19, 2015). 160 pages. Such as the way that the world works when we are not paying close attention. Mr. Mills takes what would seem to be a mundane activity and turns it into a compelling look at the hidden mechanics that keeps our lives moving. While the novel is short and there is not a large amount of character development, the discussion of how the buses are supposed to run - not too late, not too early - demonstrates that there is more to bus driving than just sitting behind the wheel. The humor of the bus drivers as they sit around the break table shows how they take all of the perceived interference by those in management in stride. This is not an expose' of the bus driving occupation. It is, however, an enjoyable and quick read that thoroughly entertains.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for free through Good Reads' "First Reads" program.
