From School Library Journal Gr 6–8—Holczer writes about the common theme of loss, but creates quite an uncommon character who must deal with the sudden death of her mother, and moving in with a grandmother she has never met. Grace's mother leads them on a nomadic life of moving from one place to another, always searching for just the right home, until her untimely death. Grace must then find a way to get to know and forgive her grandmother who has always been a stranger in her life. She soon discovers that her mother has left her one more treasure hunt. The clues take her deep inside her family's past and unlock memories that finally give her the stability and roots she has always been craving. Holczer expertly crafts the characters and dialogue to create a story readers will identify with, and thoroughly enjoy. The undercurrent theme of loss is balanced well with humor and an authentic protagonist. More than simply a book about grief and the death of a parent, Grace's story is about the search for identity. An essential purchase for middle-grade collections.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

Lovely Writing Paired With Excellent Story-Telling By Willow THE SECRET HUM OF A DAISY features Grace, a girl who is mourning the loss of her mother and how to navigate her sorrow, what to hold onto, and what to let go. There are many details to love about this story: fragile, yet strong Grace and the quirky, endearing characters who surround her; the endowed, almost sacred origami cranes, junk-art birds, daisies; the recurring Robert Frost poetry references; and some of the most lovely, poetic phrases that I've ever read in prose. But nothing in this story is gratuitous. Every lovely line helps advance the story, reveal character, and/or establish setting...or more to culminate in a deeply satisfying reading experience. In all, Tracy Holczer has woven together a thoughtful, touching story that only seems effortless as a reader. I have no doubt that it was written with great skill and effort and is an excellent example of the rich effect that lyrical writing can have on a novel.

The Secret Hum of a Daisy: An Absolute Must Read By Tina Says Tracy Holczer's The Secret Hum of a Daisy is the type of novel I devour, then want to begin all over again. This book is so much more than just the story that Holczer has written. It is an absolutely beautiful book, full of wisdom and sadness, and hope. Grace is twelve years old when her mother dies in an accident. It has always been just the two of them against the world. Grace's father died before she was born, and although she knows she has a grandmother out there somewhere, she has never met her. Grace's mom and grandma didn't see eye to eye on things when Grace's mom was pregnant with her, and she left town, never returning. The two move often, not really allowing themselves to settle in any one town. But now that her mom has passed away, Grace is being sent to live with her grandmother, a woman that she is sure she is not supposed to like. Her grandmother's life feels far from the one she was accustomed to living with her mom.Grace continues to want to live in the Before....before the accident, not the After. Her grief is still new, and as she tries to mourn the loss of her mother, she is also adjusting to a new school and her grandmother, who doesn't seem nearly as horrible as she anticipated.Grace learns a lot about life and about love and about moving on. Holczer's novel is so beautifully written. There is an important message within this story, and although I just finished reading this myself, would love to start over again so I can enjoy the wisdom that is imparted in its pages. This is a novel I will be recommending to everyone from my middle grade readers to my adult friends. I'm hoping The Secret Hum of a Daisy is on everyone's mind come Newbery time.

By delicateflower152 That statement - from the ARC - aptly summarizes the lesson several characters in "The Secret Hum of a Daisy" will learn. Tracy Holczer has given readers a novel that is heartbreaking; beautiful; and finally, joyous.Grace, a twelve-year old girl, is the daughter of an itinerant artist - a young woman who creates and sells birds made from "found" objects. Anna's sudden death tears Grace's life and her world into pieces. Her description of what she feels tells all one needs to know about the devastating impact of her mother's death - "... I was certain ... they'd find stuff missing ... some deep down place that knew how to love and smile and feel as light as feathers on sunshiney days. That part was clean gone ..." Tracy Holczer has done an outstanding job of describing the emotions and raw pain that a child feels when facing life after the death of a parent. She has accomplished this using simple phrasing and vivid imagery without creating maudlin or hysterical characters.Grace goes to live with only living relative, her grandmother Miranda, a woman she had been led to believe forced Anna to leave when her teen pregnancy was known. As the Grace come to terms with her situation and learns more about Miranda, Grace says "...It was an effort to squeeze her back down to the right size and shape..." "...The person I'd made Grandma up to be, someone hard and cruel, just didn't match this woman ..."Miranda, too, is haunted by her past actions and must come to terms with the consequences of those actions. At one point, Grace tells her "...You owe Mama things you can't give me..." To which Miranda replies "I know I do ..." Miranda tends the grounds daily in the public park she designed and in which a fountain Anna designed stands as the centerpiece. Grace's friend Jo tells her "...You can tell how much she loves this place ..." While Miranda was unable to show her love to Anna when Anna was present, she now performs, in tending the park, acts of daily contrition.Other characters impact Grace's life and the overall story told through "The Secret Hum of a Daisy". Tracy Holczer has created a protagonist and supporting players having the depth of character and the real emotions necessary to touch the reader deeply. Each individual learns to forgive and to move forward; each plays an integral role in the lessons to be learned and the road lives will take.Tracy Holczer has given readers a novel that will engage them from the first page. "The Secret Hum of a Daisy" is a book that was impossible to put aside; I lost track of time as I read this book. This is a novel parents can feel comfortable giving to children in the targeted age group. There is no profanity, violence, or physical impropriety; the story emphasizes positive values and relationships. "The Secret Hum of a Daisy" is a book to read and treasure. It explores the impact of anger on relationships; of the need for forgiveness; and of the healing power of love. Although the target audience is age ten and older, this is a book for anyone who enjoys a well-written, beautiful novel.
